Duster William Daniels
1922 - 2001

Services for Duster W. Daniels, 79, Bonner Springs, are May 18 at the Pentecostal Tabernacle, Kansas City, Kan. Burial will be in the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Leavenworth.

Mr. Daniels died Monday, May 14, at the Medical Lodge, north of Kansas City, Kan.

He was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Swain, Arkansas. He was a machine operator for Inland Cold Storage, retiring in 1959. He was a charter member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle, Kansas City, Kan., and an Army veteran of WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Daniels, Bonner Springs; two sons, Dewayne Daniels, Kansas City, Kan., and James Daniels, Easton, Kan.; four daughters, Vivian Reeves, Bonner Springs, Alice Gowin and Patricia Davidson, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Junita Hanners, Burlington; three sisters, Frankie Smith, Jasper, Ark., Marie Owens, Sarcoxie, Mo., and Bobby G. Hall, Springdale, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Vernon E. Stephens
1920 - 2001

Services for Vernon Stephens, 80, Bonner Springs, are May 17, at the First Christian Church, Bonner Springs. Burial will be in Hillsdale Cemetery, Hillsdale, Kan.

Mr. Stephens died Monday, April 14, at the Villa St. Francis Nursing Home, Olathe.

He was born Aug. 7, 1920, in Hillsdale, Kan. He retired from King Radio in Olathe in 1985, where he worked as a quality control inspector. He was a former vice president of the Edwardsville State Bank and manager at several credit unions in the Bonner Springs and Kansas City areas. He was a member of the Topeka Masonic Lodge No. 17, the Scottish Rite of Northeast Kan., the Abdallah Shrine Temple of Overland Park where he was a former president, Eastern Star No. 302, Bonner Springs, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3191 of the Hall of Fame, Bonner Springs, where he was a former president, and a member of the First Christian Church of Bonner Springs, where he was a minister. He was previously married to Ruth Dicke Stephens Vochatzer.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret D. Stephens, Bonner Springs; three daughters, LeAnne DeTar-Newbert, Bonner Springs, Denise Claypool, Osawatomie, Kan., and Terry Allen, Westwood, Kan.; three sons, Tom DeTar, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Jim DeTar, Raytown, Mo., and Mike DeTar, Tulsa, Okla.; Three sisters, Mildred Blackburn, Drexel, Mo., Muriel Mische, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Velma Seuferling, Cameron, Mo.; three brothers, Gerald Stephens, Los Gatos, Cal., Charles Stephens, Bartlesville, Okla., and Don Stephens, Independence, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

Othal O. Wiley
1901-2001
Eva Wiley
1905-2001

Memorial services for Othal O. Wiley, 100, and Eva Graham Wiley, 95, both of Yuma, Ariz., were Tuesday, May 8, at First United Methodist Church, Yuma. A second memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Reno Church, Tonganoxie. Inurnment will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Wiley died May 3 in Yuma. Mrs. Wiley died March 11 in Somerton, Ariz.

Othal Wiley was born Feb. 24, 1901, near Linwood, the son of Lemuel and Anna (Hilner) Wiley. He grew up and attended school in Leavenworth.

He farmed near Reno for many years, and served on the Reno Township Board and Leavenworth County Conservation Board. He was a member of Reno Methodist Church.

Eva Graham was born March 24, 1905, near McLouth, the daughter of Robert and Nannie (Osborn) Graham. She graduated from Tonganoxie High School and earned a teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College.

She taught at Smith School, northeast of Tonganoxie, for two years.

She was a member of Reno Methodist Church, Reno Ladies Aid, Busy Bee Club and Kent HomeMakers EHU. She served on Leavenworth County EHU Extension Council and as a justice of the peace for Reno Township.

From 1962 to 1969, she worked at the Kansas University Student Housing Department. In Yuma, she volunteered at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center and received an honorary citation for her work. She also helped with the Council on Aging.

The couple married Nov. 2, 1924.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Kaiser, Topeka, and June Hagenbuch, Lawrence; a son, Emil F. Wiley, Lawrence; Othal Wiley's brother, Walter Wiley, Tonganoxie; Othal Wiley's sister, Elizabeth Hammons, Tonganoxie; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

The family will meet friends following the services in Tonganoxie.

The family suggests memorials to Tonganoxie Historical Society for the Reno Church, Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, American Diabetes Assn. or American Heart Assn., and they may be sent in care of Quisenberry Funeral Home, P.O. Box 993, Tonganoxie 66086.

Norman B. Hjersted
1922-2001

Memorial services for Norman Bernard Hjersted, 78, rural Linwood, were Saturday, May 5, at his home. Burial was Sunday, May 6, on his farm.

Mr. Hjersted died Saturday, April 28 at his family farm.

He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Chicago, the son of Bernard and Gladys (Wright) Hjersted. He attended schools in Omaha and Falls City, Neb., and earned a degree in chemical engineering in 1944 from Rice University, Houston.

Mr. Hjersted served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and then farmed in Rulo, Neb., before moving to Kansas City to start the Conservation Chemical Company. He later founded Midland Resources Inc. in Lawrence, and was a member of American Water Works Assn. and American Association of Chemical Engineers.

He developed the first U.S. patent for liquid ferric sulfate, a water treatment chemical now used worldwide for purifying drinking water and wastewater.

He was also a member of Shining Heart Sufi Community for more than 30 years and was a lifelong Unitarian, recently attending Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship.

He married Joyce George. They later divorced. He married Maryam Carol Graham on June 19, 1981, near Taos, N.M. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Timothy Norman, of the home, and Lawrence Norman, Lakeland, Fla.; two daughters, Karen Diane Marker, Lakeland, Fla., and Ingrid Marie Hjersted, Boston; and three grandchildren.

A son, Jason Daniel, died in 1984.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., Shining Heart Sufi Community or Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence.
