Daniel Miller

GARDNER -- Daniel Evans Miller, 29, Gardner, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in Douglas County.
Mr. Miller worked for Penny's Concrete in Shawnee the past six years, and he owned and operated Hydro Seeding Solutions lawn seeding service for residential customers. He earlier had been a police officer with the Olathe Police Department. He also served in the Navy Reserves.

He was born Aug. 2, 1973, in Gardner to Richard E. and Sharon Mosher Miller. He graduated from Gardner-Edgerton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from The University of Kansas.

Mr. Miller attended Heartland Community Church in Overland Park.

Survivors include his fiance, Tara Flory, Lawrence; his father, Richard E. Miller, Victor, Idaho; a sister, Trudy Vaupel, Salina; and a grandmother, Margery Miller, Chicago.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. today at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gardner-Edgerton High School and sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th, Lawrence, 66044-3402.

Margaret Poutre

Washington -- Margaret Poutre, 86, Washington, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at a Washington hospital.
She was born May 4, 1916, in Greenleaf, to Edmond and Neva Remington Poutre.

Miss Poutre attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Contributions may be made to the Margaret Poutre Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of Ward Funeral Home in Washington.

Nancy Feldman

Nancy Lee Johnson Feldman, 65, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Topeka.
Mrs. Feldman was a patient representative and reimbursement representative for the Cotton-O'Neil Clinic. She earlier had worked for Dr. Louis Cohen from 1981 to 1994 before he merged with the Cotton-O'Neil Clinic.

She was born Dec. 1, 1937, in Wichita, to Ralph and Lorraine Mason Johnson. She attended Wichita schools and graduated from Kansas State University in 1959. She moved to Topeka in 1967.

Mrs. Feldman was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She married Hervey Feldman on Feb. 14, 1959. They divorced.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Feldman, Bethesda, Md.; a sister, Martha Baxter, Wichita; a brother, Daniel Johnson, Seaford, Del.; and a grandson.

Mrs. Feldman was cremated. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the KSU Foundation Pet Trust, in memory of Nancy Feldman, 102 Trotter, Manhattan, 66506.

Paul Mlynek

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Central Church of Christ in Topeka for Paul Joseph Mlynek, 63, formerly of Topeka. He died Jan. 1, 2003, at a Boston hospital.
Mr. Mlynek was a journeyman electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 226.

He was born Dec. 3, 1939, in Topeka, the son of Ernest and Francis Sender Mlynek. He graduated from Highland Park High School. He had lived in Massachusetts for the past 15 years.

Mr. Mlynek was a member of the Braintree, Mass., Rifle and Pistol Club and the Hyde Park, Mass., Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Mlynek, in Massachusetts; two daughters, Mary L. Pierce, Topeka, and Paula R. Liles, Berryton; a son, Brad J. Mlynek, Tecumseh; stepdaughters, Debra Kelly, Stella Coote and Susan Conlon, all in Massachusetts; three brothers, James Mlynek, David Mlynek and Theodore Mlynek, all of Topeka; a sister, Madonna Powers, Satellite Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, 66604.

Annette Nelson-Clark

Annette Nelson-Clark, 63, Topeka, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at her home near Hoyt.
Mrs. Clark retired from management at the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 29 years of service. She also was a co-owner and cashier of the C&C Auction Service and a co-owner and accountant of the Clark Tire Service. She also was a distributor of Rose Marie Skin Care for 13 years.

She was born Oct. 20, 1939, in Salina, to Chester A. Nelson and Opal Haynes-Nelson. She graduated from Salina Central High School and had lived near Hoyt since 1993.

Mrs. Nelson-Clark was a member of a bowling team and fast-pitch softball team in Salina. She was a volunteer with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers and a member of the Salina Gospel Voice. She also was a member of St. John's Baptist Church in Salina and the Gay Paree Womens Club.

She married Robert "Bob" Clark Jr. on Aug. 8, 1988, in Salina. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Tevin Townsend, Minneapolis, and Tyrence "T.D." Townsend, Castlerock, Colo.; three daughters, Torrey Hughley, Salina, Tammy Clark, Kansas City, Mo., and Debra Allen, Merden Hall, Miss.; and 16 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Baptist Church in Salina. Inurnment is pending. Mrs. Nelson-Clark will lie in state at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Baptist Church, 315 S. Chicago, Salina, 67401.

Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Topeka is in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite Clark

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Parker-Price Mortuary for Marguerite R. Clark, 79, Auburn. She died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at a Topeka hospice.
Ms. Clark was a supervisor for the Kansas Motor Vehicle Department.

She was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Maple Hill, to Clarence M. and Elizabeth Busch-Wood Clark. She moved to Auburn in 1976.

Ms. Clark was a member of the ladies auxiliary to Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Dove, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Clark was preceded in death by two daughters, Carol M. James, in 1993, and Sheila A. Bare, in 2001, and a grandson, Lance K. James, in 1995.

Inurnment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606-2800.

Juan Perez

Juan "Joe" Jose Perez, 47, Topeka, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
Mr. Perez had worked for the Kansas Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired and was a rehabilitation specialist working with assistive technology for those who are blind.

He was born Jan. 18, 1955, in Brownsville, Texas, to Luis and Francisca Cruz Perez. He graduated from the Kansas State School for the Blind in 1974 and from Garden City Community College in 1976. He earned a bachelor's degree in history at Fort Hays State University in 1984.

Mr. Perez was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and the Topeka "Gofors" Beep Baseball Team.

He married Carolyn Sue Johnson on Feb. 14, 1987, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Michelle Sue Perez, Topeka; two sons, Christopher J. Perez, Rossville, and Nickalaus J. Perez, Topeka; three sisters, Mary L. Velasquez, Grantville, Janie M. Griswold, Scott City, and Rosie Balderrama, Grantville; a brother, Luis Perez Jr., Scott City; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Perez will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made either to Hope Lodge, 1201 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Mo.; Otterbein United Methodist Church, 2815 S.W. 8th, Topeka, 66606; or to Topeka "Gofors" Beep Baseball and sent in care of the funeral home.

Chauncey Phelps

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church for Chauncey Keith Phelps, 45, Topeka. He died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at his home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be to Phyllis Phelps, 1157 S.W. Lane, Topeka, 66604.

Henry Platt

Henry R. Platt, 87, Topeka, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Platt was an engineer for the city of Topeka Engineering Department until he retired.

He was born March 8, 1915, in Junction City, to Irving M. and Emma Smith Platt. He graduated from Junction City High School and attended Washburn University and the University of Arizona.

Mr. Platt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He married Genevieve Penner on Sept. 29, 1945, in Whitewater. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, John R. Platt, Wellington, Fla.; a daughter, Jana Harris, Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel. Inurnment will be in Mount Hope Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.

Paul Shackelford

Paul David Shackelford, 55, Topeka, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
Mr. Shackelford owned A-1 City Cab Co. in Lawrence, and he was a maintenance mechanic for FMC in Lawrence. He also was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was born Dec. 7, 1947, in Middletown, Ohio, to Lloyd and Doris Ellen Ryan Shackelford.

He married Janet S. Reynolds Willis on Feb. 2, 2000, in Miami, Okla. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, David Shackelford, Vandalia, Ohio; a daughter, Nicky Shackelford, Vandalia; two stepsons, David Willis Jr. and Jonathan Willis, both of Lawrence; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Willis, Lawrence; three brothers, Lloyd Shackelford, Lawrence, Billy Trinkel, Kansas City, Kan., and Steve Trinkel, LaCygne; a sister, Kathy Fotovich, Riverside, Mo.; his stepfather, John Jensen, Kansas City, Kan.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary Chapel. Mr. Shackelford will lie in state at the mortuary after 3 p.m. today, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Cremation will follow the services. Burial of cremains will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Post Fund at Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, 2100 S.W. Gage Blvd., Topeka, 66622.

Beatrice Gilner

GARNETT -- Beatrice "Bea" Theresa Gilner, 89, Garnett, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at a Merriam hospital.

Mrs. Gilner had been a dealer for Stanley Home Products since 1954.

She was born Sept. 10, 1911, in Greeley, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Wolken Lickteig.

Mrs. Gilner was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Greeley, the Altar Society at the church, Third Order of the Carmelites, and she was past chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She also was a member of the Pottawatomie Grange and the Daughters of Isabel.

She married James Presley Gilner Jr. on Nov. 8, 1937, in Tenafly, N.J. He preceded her in death Jan. 11, 1994.

Survivors include five sons, Frank Gilner, New Hampton, N.Y., Bob Gilner, Overland Park, Bernie Gilner, Paola, Andrew Thomas Gilner, Tonganoxie, and Jimmie Gilner, Harrisburg, Pa.; four daughters, Betty Wellman, Meriden, Carolyn O'Dell, Greeley, Mary "Kakie" Honn, LaCygne, and Terry Jasper, Bush City; four brothers, Domina Gilner, Defiance, Iowa, Father Bernard Lickteig, Scipio, Francis Gilner, Shawnee, and Father Fergus Lickteig, Leavenworth; a sister, Betty Gellhaus, Greeley; 35 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Greeley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Gilner will lie in state after 9 a.m.

Thursday at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. A rosary recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church in Greeley will be followed by visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's School in Greeley and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Lester Hayes

BURLINGTON -- Lester E. Hayes, 77, Burlington, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at a Burlington nursing home.

Mr. Hayes farmed south of Burlington for many years. He earlier had worked for Santa Fe Railway, and he served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

He was born April 12, 1923, in Ottumwa, the son of Earl and Ruth Helen Armstrong Hayes. He moved with his family to Newton as an infant and then to Burlington when he was 13 years old. He moved to Burlington from the farm in July 1999.

Mr. Hayes was a member of the First Christian Church in Burlington, a 50-year member of Congdon-Kepler post No. 38 of the American Legion at Burlington and Aerie No. 3577 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He married Betty Jane Sidorfsky on Aug. 16, 1941, in Burlington. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Richard Hayes, Rose Hill, Steve Hayes, Hutchinson, and George Hayes, Burlington; a daughter, Barbara Hover, Topeka; a stepbrother, Steve Albers, Wichita; a stepsister, Connie Smith, Chicago; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Merle Hayes, and an infant grandson, Steven Ray Hayes II.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Mr. Hayes will lie in state at the funeral home today, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of the funeral home.

Dorothy Bryan

CENTRALIA -- Dorothy Elizabeth Bryan, 81, Centralia, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at an Onaga hospital.

Mrs. Bryan and her husband farmed near Centralia for several years, and she had taught school at the Number 10 Country School for two years. She also worked at the Centralia Cafe from 1960 to 1984. She was a cook at the Centralia School in 1975, and she worked for Bauman Catering for a short time.

She was born July 4, 1919, at Humphreys, Mo., the daughter of William Riley and Louise Katherine Searing Wright. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1937 and earned a normal training certificate for teaching. She moved from the farm to Centralia in 1959.

Mrs. Bryan was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Centralia and the women's fellowship at the church. She was a former member of the Rebecca's, the Thimble Club and the Home Demonstration Unit, all in Centralia.

She married Walter Bryan on May 1, 1940, in Centralia. He preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1994. Mrs. Bryan also was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Vance, Onaga, and Sharon Johnson, Centralia; a brother, Harold Wright, Salina; three sisters, Marie Savago, Seneca, Alma Snodgrass, Garden City, and Evelyn Bailey, Holton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Centralia. Burial will be in the Centralia Cemetery. Mrs. Bryan will lie in state Thursday and until service time Friday at Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home in Centralia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational United Church if Christ or to the American Lung Association and sent in care of the funeral home.

E.K. Cadwalader

LENEXA -- Memorial services were Jan. 5 at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village for E.K. "Cad" Cadwalader, 82, Lenexa. He died Jan. 1, 2001, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

Mr. Cadwalader was associated with the Equitable Life Assurance Co. for many years. He served for four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II and then with the Air Force Reserve for many years before he retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was born Dec. 20, 1918, at Bucyrus. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at The University of Kansas, where he also earned six athletic letters in baseball and football.

Mr. Cadwalader was a member of Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village and the Abdallah Shrine Temple in Overland Park.

He married Betty Burch in 1941. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, John Cadwalader, Overland Park; a daughter, Linda Gulbrandson, Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters, Ann Guy, Bella Vista, Ark., and Mary Phelan, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

Burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery was private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, sent in care of the Abdallah Shrine Temple, 5300 Metcalf, Overland Park, 66202.

Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel in Kansas City, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
