Obituary: Richard P. Stiefel, 90, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2004 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

He was born November 17, 1913 at Carey, OH, the son of Joseph Stiefel and Ester Mae Hill Stiefel. He grew up Upper Sandusky, OH, where he attended the local schools and was a 1933 graduate of the Upper Sandusky High School.

After graduation, he joined the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC) working first as a truck driver and later being promoted up through the ranks.

He was united in marriage to Helen Mae Carlisle on July 3, 1937 at Covington, VA. She preceded him in death on April 7, 1991.

In 1941, Mr. Stiefel started working for the DuPont Company, Charlestown, IN and worked as a party chief, laying out roads, sewers, underground lines and buildings. While working for DuPont, he was sent to Hansford, WA as the area engineer for the for the Atomic Bomb plant on the Manhattan Project. In 1957, he was transferred to Topeka as the division engineer for the cellophane plant at Tecumseh. In 1958, Rev. Stiefel became the pastor at the Terra Heights Baptist Church, Topeka, a position he held until his retirement in 1979. He had been a resident of Manhattan since 1999.

He was a charter member of the White Lakes Optimist Club, Topeka and held memberships in the Upper Sandusky Masonic Lodge, the Moose Lodge at Marysville, KS, Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S., Manhattan, the Retired Ministers Association, Retired Certified Kansas Appraisers and the Sportsman’s Club. His special interests included ballroom dancing and coin collecting.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra K. Cummings, Topeka; two sisters and a brother, Ruth Naomi Stiefel Heffelfinger, Martha Elizabeth Crawford Barth and Glen Elwood Crawford, all of Upper Sandusky, OH; one grandson, Pvt. First Class Randall Bret Cummings, Pensacola, FA; and his companion, Maxine Dutcher, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Woodrow Stiefel; and two sisters, Doris Mae Savidge and Helen Crawford.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2004 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial, with Masonic committal services, will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Berryton, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Manhattan or the Family Service and Guidance Center, Topeka and left in care of the funeral home.

The family of Rev. Stiefel will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2004 at the funeral home.

Obituary: G. Louise McAdams, 92, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, February 25, 2006 in the Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center/Lyle House, Manhattan.

She was born December 18, 1913 at Medicine Lodge, KS, the daughter of H. U. Magnison and Lena Baier Magnison. She grew up in Medicine Lodge, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Medicine Lodge High School.

She was united in marriage to Verl E. “Mac” McAdams on June 30, 1935 at Medicine Lodge. He preceded her in death on January 13, 1991.

Mrs. McAdams was a homemaker and, following her husband’s County Extension Agent career, had lived in Medicine Lodge, Great Bend and Abilene before moving to Manhattan in 1952.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Methodist Church Dinner Club, AARP, RSVP, Riley County Seniors Service Center and the FCE Extension Unit. She was a volunteer leader with 4-H, did volunteer work at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community and spent countless hours coordinating receptions and other occasions at the First United Methodist Church. The kitchen facilities at the church are named in her honor.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. McAdams was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John and Pete Magnison; a sister Opal Spencer; and a granddaughter, Angela Marie Medley.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Postier, and her husband, Galen and Janet Medley, and her husband, Loren, all of Topeka, KS; a sister, Jo Ann Stolp, Medicine Lodge; five grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 3, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Revs. Jim Reed, Moon-Hee Chung and Russell Stolp officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church or Homecare & Hospice and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

The family of Mrs. McAdams will receive friends for an hour preceding the service in Fellowship Hall of the church.

Obituary: Lowell Wayne Friesen, 79, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, February 24, 2006 in the Stormont-Vail Medical Center, Topeka.

He was born November 5, 1926 in Westmoreland, KS, the son of Leonard Friesen and Molly Geist Friesen. He grew up in Westmoreland and attended the local schools.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Dolores A. Kindt on December 5, 1968 at Las Vegas, NV. She survives of the home.

Mr. Friesen spent many years in the Los Angeles, CA area working as an over-the-road truck driver and as a mechanic. He had been a Manhattan resident since 1974 and was a life member of Lee Pierson V.F. W. Post No. 1786, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Friesen is survived by a step son, George Sutterlin, and his wife, Mary, Manhattan; a brother, LaVerne Friesen, Westmoreland; and four grandchildren, Shane Hosier and Serina, Amanda and Charlie Sutterlin.

Cremation is planned. Graveside inurnment services, with military honors, will be at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2006 in the Valley View Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends at the V.F.W. Post, 212 South 4th, Manhattan at 12:00 noon after the graveside services.

Obituary: Dale H. Edelblute, 93, a former Manhattan and Garden City, KS resident, passed away Monday, March 13, 2006 in the Newton Medical Center, Newton, KS.

He was born July 5, 1912 at Keats, KS, the son of Roy Edelblute and Bessie Conrad Edelblute. He grew up in Keats and attended the local schools. He later attended Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan and graduated in 1938 with a BS degree in Agricultural.

While attending Kansas State, he met and married Helen J. Joseph on July 21, 1935 at Manhattan. She preceded him in death on February 4, 2005.

Mr. Edelblute taught Vocational Agricultural in the public high schools of El Dorado and Kincaid, KS for several years and lived in several other Kansas communities working as an agronomy specialist with Kansas State University. He spent many years in Garden City before retiring and moving back to Manhattan in 1980. He had been living in Newton since 1997 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Edelblute was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ronald and Lyle Edelblute; and one sister, Nina Edelblute.

Survivors include two sons, David J. Edelblute, and his wife, Judy, San Diego, CA and Phillip R. Edelblute, and his wife, Patricia, Chickasha, OK; four grandchildren, Thomas J. Edelblute, Scott D. Edelblute, Jennifer Edelblute-Clarke and Jessica Edelblute; and one great grandson, Eli Edelblute-Clarke.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2006 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Obituary: Marie L. Bonawitz, 88, Wamego, KS passed away Monday, May 8, 2006 in the Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born October 22, 1917 at Deer Creek, OK, the daughter of Andrew Martin Storck and Bertha Kaebnick Storck. She grew up in Deer Creek, where she attended the local schools and later graduated from the Blackwell, OK High School.

While working for the Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita during World War II, as a wing riveter and jig maker, she met and later married Henry “Hank” D. Bonawitz on April 28, 1945 at Oklahoma City, OK. He preceded her in death on August 7, 2002.

The Bonawitz’s lived in Wichita for a short time before moving to the Manhattan area in 1946. Mrs. Bonawitz helped her husband in the Bonawitz Machine Shop for many years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Zeandale Community Church and her hobbies included gardening and collecting candles and teddy bears.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl A. Storck.

Survivors include four sons, Dan K. Bonawitz, and his wife, Pamela, San Pedro, CA, and Gary R. Bonawitz and his wife, Sharon, Jon M. Bonawitz, and his wife, Sherry and Tim L. Bonawitz, and his wife, Pat, all of Manhattan.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Dr. Wesley Paddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Manhattan.

Obituary: LeMoyne “Blackie” Blackburn, 79, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, May 8, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born June 2, 1926 at Republican City, NE, the son of Ernest J. Blackburn and Neva B. Shaffer Blackburn. As a small child, his family moved to the Agra and Phillipsburg, KS area where he attended the local schools and was a 1943 graduate of the Agra High School.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Joan Coffin on January 16, 1949 at Phillipsburg, KS. She preceded him in death on April 29, 2003.

Mr. Blackburn farmed in the Agra and Phillipsburg area for several years before moving to Manhattan in 1956. He worked as a construction superintendent for the Hunter-Lundberg Construction Company for over thirty years and later for the Osborne Construction Company until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of Carpenters Unions Local No. 918.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Blackburn was preceded in death by parents; three brothers, Melvin, Gerald and Eldon Blackburn; and an infant grandson, Darrin C. Blackburn.

Survivors include two sons, Steven L. Blackburn, and his wife, Marla, Kansas City, MO and David R. Blackburn, and his wife, Janet, Manhattan; two sisters, Leota Watson, Oologah, OK and Myrna Morgan, Oklahoma City, OK; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Tom Albright officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Harold A. Robinson, 76, Wharton, NJ, the first African-American to play in the Big 7 Conference, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in his home.

Born in Manhattan in 1930, Mr. Robinson attended the local schools and was a 1948 graduate of the Manhattan High School. He attended Kansas State University and had lived in Wharton for over 38 years.

Mr. Robinson broke the “color barrier” in the Big 7 Conference when he was the first African-American scholarship athlete to play for Kansas State University and in 2003 was inducted into KSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was drafted and served in the US Army during the Korean War, where he was injured and received a purple heart. He was a member of the V.F.W and American Legion.

He was employed by Western Electric, a division of AT & T, in Union, NJ for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He then worked at Morris County Community College, Randolph, NJ until 1997. He was treasurer and active member of Local 1095, a CWA-AFLCIO Local and the Telephone Pioneers Club of America.

Harold, an avid jazz and blues aficionado, could often be heard playing his saxophone along with a record. His love of music was passed on to his children and grandchildren. He spent his retirement years traveling to Manhattan each fall to cheer on the KSU Wildcats. Wearing purple often to show his support and love for his alma mater, he was proud of his home state, the city of Manhattan and KSU.

Survivors include his wife, L. Ann Robinson, of the home; daughters, Beth R. Shann, Bloomfield, NJ, L. Melanie Robinson, Long Valley, NJ, Judith Robinson-Phillips (Pernell) of Wharton and Sherry L. Robinson, Long Valley, NJ; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the St. John’s United Methodist Church, 20 Church St., Wharton. A visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m., Friday, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 249 S. Main St., Wharton.

Additional services will be held in Manhattan with a family visitation on Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., when a procession will form to go to the Sunset Cemetery.
