HILL CITY — Betty Lea Johnson, 84, died Aug. 28, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Stinemetz Funeral Home in Hill City.

Ruby Molz

Saturday, Aug 30, 2008

SALINA — Ruby L. Molz, 92, of Salina, died Sunday, August 24, 2008.

She was born on the farm of Daisy and Ed Brownell on April 23, 1914. at Hollis, Kan., the second child of triplets.

She spent two years in Alaska, returning to Kansas, settling in Syracuse in 1942. She married Rudolph Molz. They owned and operated the former Bluebird Cafe in Syracuse for many years.

Survivors include a niece and close friends.

She was preceded in death by three sons: Duane, Robert, and Norman; and three husbands, Wendell Else, Roy Stahlman and Rudolph Molz.
There will be no visitation or services at the family’s request.

Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, is in charge of arrangements.

Anthony Daniel

CLAY CENTER — Anthony Paul McDaniel, 35, died Aug. 28, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

He was born Jan. 20, 1973, in Concordia, the son of Harland and Alberta (Baltazor) McDaniel. He was raised in Concordia and attended Concordia High School.

He married Amy Sue McClintock on Sept. 12, 1992.
Mr. McDaniel worked for Great Plains Manufacturing Land Pride Division in Abilene.

Survivors include his wife, Amy McDaniel of Clay Center; one daughter, Ashley McDaniel, of the home; his mother: Alberta McDaniel of Concordia; four brothers, William McDaniel, James McDaniel, John McDan-iel and Mike McDaniel; and four sisters, Cathy White, Karen Eubanks, Debbie Benson and Glenda Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harland.

Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Clay Center. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.

Visitation is set from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, 918 7th St., Clay Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Anthony McDaniel Memorial Fund, which will be designated later.

Donald Schmidt

HERINGTON — Donald F. Schmidt, 77, a lifelong resident of Hope, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 24, 1930, near White City, the son of Christian and Ethel M. (Ruthruff) Schmidt. He attended Highland County Grade School and graduated in 1949 from White City High School.

He married Jessie D. Edmonson on Nov. 2, 1952, at the First Christian Church in Herington.

Mr. Schmidt was a farmer and carpenter. He worked for Mor-Kan Grain Elevator, Parkerville Baptist Church, White City High School and most recently, the White City Fire Department.

He was a member of Parkerville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie, of the home in White City; one son, Tracy Schmidt of White City; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a 17-year-old daughter, Delores Jean “Jeanie” Schmidt, on Feb. 27, 1971; and three sisters, Gloria Garrett, Mary Ellen Peterson and Margaret Smallwood.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, at the Parkerville Baptist Church, with Pastor Bob Strom officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and on Monday from 1 p.m. until time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the White City Fire Department, Parkerville Baptist Church or Midland Hospice of Morris County and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Merle ‘Mac” McCullough

Merle F. McCullough, 77, died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.
He was born May 31, 1931, in Louisville, the son of Ralph and Myrtle (Robinson) McCullough.

He attended Junction City schools and enlisted in the United States Air Force.
He married Maria Szfranski on Nov. 12, 1955 in Fairfield, England. He retired from the Air Force as a TSgt after 21 years of service.

They moved to Abilene to make their home in 1974. He worked for Bud’s Tire in Abilene until it closed and later for Holm Automotive.

He was a member of the Abilene Eagles, the Abilene Elks Lodge and was active in the Abilene Bowling Association.

Survivors include his wife, Maria, of the home; one son Merle McCullough Jr. of Redding, Calif., two daughters, Darlene Bowyer of Abilene and Susan Edwards of Springfield, Mo.; one brother Ralph McCullough of Topeka; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 N.W. Third, Abilene. Fr. Henry Baxa will officiate. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. where friends may call until time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association and left at the funeral home.

Sandra Geske

GREAT FALLS, Mont. —Sandy L. (Swaim) Geske, 66, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Peace Hospice of glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor.

Survivors include her husband, Larry D. Geske of Great Falls; sons, Michael L. Geske of Great Falls, Mont. and Matthew H. Geske of Helena, Mont; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Centene Stadium.
Schnider Funeral Home in Great Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Marcella Jones

ACCOKEEK, Md. — Marcella P. Jones, 85, Accokeek, died June 11, 2008, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton.

She was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Upland,?the daughter of Otto and Agnes Rieck.
She worked for the Post Exchange at the U.S. Air Force Station in Keflavik, Iceland, in 1958, and as a sales clerk for the Hecht Co. and Gift Shop in Marlow Heights in the 1960s and 70s.

Survivors include her husband, George R. Jones; two sons, Robert E. Jones and Donald D. Jones; one sister, Ruth Caspar; two brothers, James Rieck and John Rieck; two grandsons, two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Rieck; and one sister, Madeline Caspar.

Visitation was held June 17, at Huntt Funeral Home, Waldorf, where a service was held June 19, 2008. The Rev. Marc L. Britt officiated. Burial was in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Alfred Shoemaker

HAYS — Alfred Bernard Shoemaker, 82, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Hays Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Lucerne, the son of Arthur B. and Eva (Aumiller) Shoemaker.

He married Simone Noel in Bleret, Belgium on Feb. 14, 1946.

Mr. Shoemaker was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army Infantry. He was awarded a bronze star for bravery and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the Battle of the Bulge.

He and his wife owned and operated the Hays City Bakery for many years. He retired in 2000 from Fort Hays State University.

He was a member of VFW Post 9076 and a past member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Simone, of the home; children, Alan B. Shoemaker of Hays; Suzanne Bollig of Hays; and Marcel Shoemaker of Abilene; one sister, Nadine Oberkrom of Agra; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Donald C. Shoemaker; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, with military graveside honors by the Hays VFW.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Monday) and from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Brock’s North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine Street, Hays. A parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Hays Medical Center or to the organization of the donor’s choice.

Donald Oren

HOXIE — Donald Wayne Oren, 66, Hoxie, died Saturday, July 12, 2008.
He was born Nov. 5, 1941, near Hoxie to Arlie and Grace Patmon Oren.

He was a farmer and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Hoxie Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Hoxie; one son, David Oren of Colby; one daughter, Kathryn Oren of Abilene; brothers, Jerry Oren of Wahpeton, N.D., and Larry Oren of Colby; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at the Hoxie Christian Church. Burial will be at 3:45 p.m. in Beulah Cemetery, Colby, with military honors.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today (Monday) and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in Hoxie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sheridan County Hospice or the church and made in care of the funeral home.
