George E. Vonderheid, 95, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, December 28, 2003 in the Mercy Regional Health Center-College Ave., Manhattan.
He was born in Chicago, IL on April 11, 1908. He is survived by his youngest sister, Bernice Dunn of Chesterton, IN; his nieces, Carole Bee Chelz and Penny Sturr, both of Manhattan; a nephew, Guy A. Herman of Beverly Shores, IN; and his niece, Karen A. LaPointe of Hood River, OR.
George had lived in Manhattan for the past seven years having moved here from Florida with his wife, Martha. She passed away on December 12, 1996.
He resided at Meadowlark Hills in the Miller House assisted living area. George was an avid bridge player and played three times a week at the Senior Center. He also enjoyed taking day trips with Mr. Doug Tippin and the Seniors.
George was a veteran of World War II and served on a destroyer, the U.S.S. Stoddard DD 566, in the sea of Japan. He had attended every one of his navy reunions, the most recent was in September in Philadelphia, where he was the oldest attendee. He had already sent in his reservation for the 2004 reunion to be held in Chicago.
George was also an avid gardener and African Violet enthusiast. He had won many awards for his abilities to cultivate and grow these delicate flowers. He and his wife, Martha, were caravaners, taking their Airstream trailer throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Following the death of his wife, George spent the next five years taking cruises to Brazil, Alaska, Norway, Italy, Mexico and down the Mississippi River on the Delta Queen. He preferred taking freighter trips until it was no longer possible for him physically.
He retired from the Continental Bank in Chicago at the age of 60 and was given a cane as a retirement gift. Little did they know that he would live to be 95.
Cremation will be followed by a private service in Hammond, IN, the resting place of his beloved mother, Minnie Vonderheid.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2004 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Michael Ide officiating. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.
