Obituary: Patricia Ann Allen, 52, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005 in her home from complications due to cancer.

She was born April 8, 1952 at Newton, KS, the daughter of James H. Allen and Glenda R. Hackenberg Allen. She was preceded in death by both of her parents. Patricia graduated from Newton High School in 1970 and moved to Manhattan to attend Kansas State University, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.

In 1976, she began her lifelong career with Ace Hardware in the Parts and Service Departments. Patricia enjoyed sports, playing softball with local teams for several years and she later became skilled in gardening and landscape design, completing the Master Gardener Program. She enjoyed attending the annual Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS and was devoted to her cats, bringing care and comfort to their lives.

Survivors include her lifelong companion of twenty-two years, Terry Kuchcinski, Manhattan; brothers, James Allen, Jr. of Edmond, Ok and Richard Allen, Newton, KS; three sisters, Nancy Graber and Sally Allen, both of Newton and Susan Kline of Ft. Worth, TX; aunts, Ruth McNail of Decatur, IL, Dr. Frances Allen, Newton, Arlene Doty and her husband, Cecil, Hesston, KS, Wanita Schowalter of Newton and Eleanor Hackenberg, Manhattan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 21, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Riley County Humane Society or Homecare & Hospice and left in care of the funeral home.

A visitation for family and friends will be held for one hour preceding the service.

Obituary: Christina Evelyn Massey, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, March 06, 2005 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

She was born May 28, 1915, on the family farm between Paxico and St. Marys, Kansas, the last surviving child of nine children born to Jake Pauly and Katherine Ann Carl Pauly.

She grew up on the farm, attending elementary schools in Paxico and graduating from the St. Marys High School.

She was united in marriage to Frank N. Massey on August 12, 1940 at Manhattan. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Massey was a homemaker and had spent most of her life in the Manhattan area. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Massey in 1971; her parents; and eight brothers and sisters.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Massey is survived by a son, Tom Massey, and his wife, Carol, of Dallas, TX.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2005 in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church with the Revs. Don Zimmerman and Loren Werth officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Forest Max Brubaker, 72, Hutchinson, KS, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2005 in the Leonardville Nursing Home, Leonardville, KS.

He was born December 7, 1932 at Hugoton, KS, the son of Donavon Brubaker and Emma Blaine Brubaker. He grew up in Hugoton, where he attended the local schools and was a 1950 graduate of the Hugoton High School.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Brubaker worked as a truck driver for the Becker Trucking Company. El Dorado, KS for many years. He retired in 1990.

Survivors include three brothers, Bill Brubaker, and his wife, Virginia, Manhattan, Roger Ray Brubaker, Billings, MT and Leo Dane Brubaker, Seattle, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne Brubaker.

Obituary: Erma L. Hearron, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, February 6, 2005 in her home.

She was born October 12, 1924 at Evansville, IN, the daughter of Charles and Louise Grimwood. She grew up in Evansville and attended the local schools.

She was married to Grover W. Hearron. They were later divorced.

Mrs. Hearron was a homemaker and lived many years in Los Angeles, CA before moving to Manhattan in 1995.

She is survived by five sons, Richard E. Hearron, Manhattan, Grover W. Hearron, Jr., Virginia Beach, VA, Jimmy Ray Hearron, Atascadero, CA and Lester L. Hearron and Patrick L. Hearron, both of Los Angeles, CA; three sisters, Ethel Wood, Dallas, TX, and Eloise Brown and Margaret Floyd, both of Evansville; six grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2005 in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Manhattan. Burial will be in the Valley View Memorial Gardens. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Obituary: Helen J. Edelblute, 92, a former Manhattan and Garden City resident, passed away Friday, February 4, 2005 at the Kansas Christian Home, Newton, KS.

She was born June 15, 1912 at Denver, CO, the daughter of William H. Joseph and Myrtle Shell Joseph. She grew up in Wyoming, where she received her elementary and secondary education. She later attended Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan and graduated with a BS degree in Home Economics.

While attending Kansas State, she met and married Dale H. Edelblute on July 21, 1935 at Manhattan. He survives.

Mrs. Edelblute lived in several communities in Kansas while following her husband’s career as an agronomy specialist with Kansas State University. They spent many years in Garden City before retiring and moving back to Manhattan in 1980. They had been living in Newton since 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Dorothy Benson Ventura.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Edelblute is survived by two sons, David J. Edelblute, and his wife, Judy, San Diego, CA and Phillip R. Edelblute, and his wife, Patricia, Chickasha, OK; four grandchildren, Thomas J. Edelblute, Scott D. Edelblute, Jennifer Edelblute and Jessica Edelblute; and a niece, Harriet A. Benson.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2005 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan. Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Obituary: Rachel Ann Gipson, 89, died Thursday, February 03, 2005 at the Meadowlark Retirement Center in Manhattan, KS.

She was born on July 14, 1915, the daughter of Elmer and Paulina Enyeart of Indian Grove, MO.

She married C.L. Gipson on December 25, 1941. They made their home in Mason, Missouri until 2001, at which time they moved to Manhattan. She was preceded in death by C.L. on June 5, 2004; her parents; three brothers; and four sisters.

Rachel was a homemaker for most of her life but started a career as an LPN after her children were grown.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mason, MO.

Rachel is survived by one son, Carl Gipson, and his wife, Karen, of Wichita, KS; a daughter, Martha Meek, and her husband, Palmer, Manhattan; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

A graveside family service will be held at Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Ministry Apprenticeship Program, a church-based seminary mission, co-administered by her grandson. Contributions can be left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Obituary: Jean Link Thompson, 84, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, January 29, 2005 at her home.

She was born August 27, 1920 at Seattle, WA, the daughter of John Link and Cora Deer Link. Early in life, she moved with her family to Pittsburgh, PA, where she attended elementary and secondary schools and graduated from high school in 1937. She attended college for one year and then entered training in the School of Nursing at Childrens’ Hospital, a part of the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1941. Shortly after which she became an RN.

After working for a year, she entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, as a Second Lieutenant, on July 15, 1942. As an Army nurse, she served in hospitals at Ft. Lewis, WA and Brigham City, UT. On January 4, 1944, she shipped out to the Southwest Pacific Area, where she served in Australia. After a short time there, she served as a Nurse in a Combat Fatigue Ward in a General Hospital in Hollandia, New Guinea. While there, she was infected with an incurable infection that incapacitated her and on June 14, 1945 was sent back to the United State for recovery. She was separated from the Army in January 1946.

In June 1948, she earned a BS degree in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island. This enabled her to serve in supervisory positions. She served as a Supervisor of Nursing at Biggs Memorial Hospital, Ithaca, NY. In October 1956, she moved with her family to Manhattan and worked as a nurse for over 25 years at the St. Mary Hospital, including 15 years as Night Supervisor and 10 years as Director of Nursing Services. While serving in this position, she continued her education and received a MS degree in Adult Education. In 1982, she was serving as President of the Kansas Association of Nursing Administrators when she was stricken by a severe stroke.

On June 21, 1946, Jean was united in marriage to Hugh E. Thompson at Pittsburgh, PA. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2003. Survivors include four children, Paul Thompson, and his wife, Judy, Blue Springs, MO, Philip Thompson, Manhattan, Kenneth Thompson, and his wife, Elisabeth, Manhattan, and Sarah Gordon, and her husband, Matt, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Hugh, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David Link; and a sister, Cora Stitt.

Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Manhattan Chapter No. 209, Order of the Eastern Star and an honorary member of the Kansas Association of Nursing Administrators.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. R. C. “Cam” McConnell officiating. Inurnment will follow, with military honors, in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Homecare & Hospice or Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S. and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Obituary: Laurel C. Smith, 61, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, January 20, 2005 while on a Caribbean cruise with his family.

He was born November 2, 1943 in Logan, KS, the son of Lowell C. Smith and Opal Cheeseman Smith. He grew up Logan and later moved to Lenora, KS, where he graduated from the Lenora High School in 1961. He came to Manhattan in 1963 to attend Kansas State University and had been a Manhattan resident since that time.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Gilmore on July 18, 1979 in Las Vegas, NV. She survives of the home.

From 1969-1979, Laurel worked as the Commercial Printing Manager for the Manhattan Mercury newspaper. Since 1979, he had been a self-employed insurance agent and financial planner.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Eagles Lodge, the Salina Isis Shrine, the Manhattan Shrine Club, and the Naphtali Masonic Lodge No. 310, A.F. & A. M., Lenora.

In addition to his wife, Laurel is survived by a son, Lowell C. Smith, Quincy, IL; his mother, Opal Smith, Almena, KS; and a brother, Kelvin L. Smith, Long Island, KS.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2005 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.
