Obituary: Leo S. Glowacki, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born September 4, 1916 at Detroit, MI, the son of Stanley Glowacki and Rosaliya Hoszczik Glowacki. He grew up in Detroit and attended the local schools.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Zlik on April 2, 1955 at Goeppingen, Germany. She survives of the home.

Mr. Glowacki was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring as a Staff Sergeant in December 1966. His first tour of duty was during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre and later had tours during the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He had been a resident of Manhattan since 1955.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Glowacki; his parents; a brother, Walter Glowacki; and a sister, Helen.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Glowacki is survived by a son, Richard Glowacki, Douglasville, GA; a sister, Stella Przeradzky, Warren, MI; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. A Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. A graveside inurnment service, with full military honors, will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2006 in the Ft. Riley Cemetery, Ft. Riley, KS.

Obituary: Natalie W. Brockish, 72, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006 in the home of her daughter, Lynn Beier, Manhattan.

She was born September 27, 1933 at Newport, RI, the daughter of Charles F. Kent and Evelyn E. Ward Kent. She grew up in Newport, where she attended the local schools and was a 1951 graduate of the Rogers High School.

She was married to Frank A. Miller. They were later divorced. On October 8, 1971 she was united in marriage to Harry D. Brockish at Manhattan. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Brockish lived in Enterprise, KS and Ottawa, KS before moving to Manhattan in 1959. She worked for a few years as a nurse’s aid at the St. Mary’s Hospital and for over 32 years worked as a laboratory technician at Kansas State University. She retired in 1998.

Mrs. Brockish was a longtime K-State representative to the Kansas Association of Public Employees (KAPE) and was a past president of the local Chapter 11 of KAPE, Past President of the Northeast Kansas Chapter of KAPE and served on the Board of Directors for many years. She received a lifetime award from the American Federation of Teachers in 2000. She was also a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2468 Auxiliary and was an active volunteer with the Riley County Democratic Party.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Joseph Miller; her parents; a brother, Robert Kent; and a sister, Jean Gawith.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brockish is survived by two sons, Glenn Miller, Manhattan and Lee Miller, and his wife, Doris, Topeka; three daughters, Lynn Beier, and her husband, Steve, Manhattan, Barbara Halley, and her husband, John, Lacon, IL and Arlene Flanders, also of Manhattan; four brothers, Charles Kent, Ft. Myers, FL, Edward Kent, Portsmouth, RI, Alan Kent, Middletown, RI and James Kent, Newport, RI; three sisters, Shirley Smith and Margaret Mashaw, both of Middletown, RI and Mary Lou Lussier, Jacksonville, FL. She was very proud of her 13 grandchildren, Jeremy Brecken, Stephanie Kinderknecht, Audrey Balthazor, Melissa Miller, Liza Luginbill, Thomas Flanders, Brett Beier, and Katie, Brittany, Ben, Sarah, Meg and Joe Miller and her two great great grandchildren, Samantha and Emily Kinderknecht.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Cremation will follow with inurnment services at a later date in Newport, RI.

Obituary: Loren “Corky” E. King, 77, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 in his home.

He was born May 5, 1928 at Clay Center, KS, the son of Vernon D. King and Phoebe E. Mottin King. He grew up in Manhattan where he attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Manhattan High School.

He was united in marriage to Alyce J. Tidwell on May 5, 1956 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

Mr. King worked as a Line Foreman with the Kansas Power & Light Company from 1948 until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Mr. King is survived by a son, Alvin R. King, and his wife, Linda, Manhattan; two daughters, Terri G. Cragg, and her husband, Lewis, Wamego, KS and Linda S. King-Lake, and her husband, Charles, Manhattan; two brothers, Francis V. King, Manhattan and Glenn G. King, Topeka; and six grandchildren, Stacey King, Michael King, Jesse Cragg, and his wife, Monica, Dustin Cragg, Lacey Cragg, and Christopher Alan Lake.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 13, 2006 in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, east of Manhattan, with the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to meet at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan at 10:30 a.m. to form a procession to the cemetery.

Obituary: Della Mae Lewis, 79, formerly of Manhattan, KS, passed away Friday, January 6, 2006 in the Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka.

She was born September 6, 1926 at Riley, KS, the daughter of Harry E. Davis and Gertrude M. Butler Davis. She grew up in Leonardville, KS, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Leonardville High School.

The was united in marriage to Donald L. Lewis on May 28, 1944 at Leonardville. He preceded her in death on December 17, 2003.

Mrs. Lewis had been a resident of Manhattan since 1951. She worked as a cook in the local sororities, at Kansas State University and at the local Unified School District No. 383. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan and had been living in Topeka since early 2005.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by a son, Allen Lewis in September 1978; a daughter, Sally Anne Lewis on September 25, 2003; her parents; and two brothers, Wayne and Lester Davis.

Survivors include two sons, Russell W. Lewis, and his wife, Shirley, Wamego, KS and Richard D. Lewis, Topeka; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 12, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Riley Cemetery, Riley, KS.

Obituary: Alice C. Duncan, 87, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, December 15, 2005 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

She was born May 14, 1918 in Decatur County, IA, the daughter of Fred L. Young and Cora A. Hardinger Young. At the age of 18 months, Alice moved with her parents to a farm in Norton County, KS, where she lived with her family in a sod house. She attended the local schools and after high school graduation taught in a one room school house near Clayton, KS for two years. In 1939, while attending a teacher’s conference at Lenora, KS, she met her life long partner Dale L. Duncan. They were united in marriage on November 4, 1939 at St. Francis, KS. They lived for a short time in Oberlin and Eskridge, KS, before moving to Manhattan in 1943.

Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker and had worked several years at the Riley County Clerk’s Office. She was a member of the First Christian Church; Worthy Patron of Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S.; Past president of the Riley County Women’s Club; Past vice chairman of the Riley County Republican Central Committee, past precinct committee woman, and past president of the Women’s Republican Club; Kansas State Historical Society, Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 Auxiliary; and the Polly Ogden Chapter of the DAR. She devoted many volunteer hours of research to the Riley County Genealogical Society, which included several publications on her own family’s history. Her main love was gardening and was especially proud of her day lily collection. She was a charter member and past president of the College Hill Garden Club and was a founding member of the Manhattan Hemerocallis Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, on August 25, 1999; her parents; a sister, Pauline Brooks; and a brother, Ralph Young.

Alice is survived by her four boys, Patrick L. Duncan, and his wife, Janet, Michael S. Duncan and Timothy D. Duncan, and his wife, Linda, all of Manhattan and Terry E. Duncan, and his wife, Sue, of Springfield, OR; 11 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery.

Obituary: John W. Machin, Jr., 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born October 28, 1917 at Wamego, KS, the son of Harry L. Machin and Mary Pearl Head Machin. He grew up on the family farm south of Wamego. He attended the local schools and was a 1935 graduate of the Wamego High School. In 1948, he received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State Agricultural College.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Burgess in 1940 in Pottawatomie County, KS. They were later divorced. On May 9, 1958 he was united in marriage to Georgia E. Evans McCarter at Manhattan. She preceded him in death on August 21, 1982. He was united in marriage to Lela P. Buell Kalous on January 25, 1985 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

Mr. Machin was a licensed Professional Electrical engineer and worked for the Hotte Electric Company, the Williamson Electric Company and in 1953 began working at the Acker Electric Company. Along with his son, John III, he purchased the company in 1979 and co-owned and operated the business until his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Breakfast Optimist Club and the Elks Club, all of Manhattan. Other memberships included the Wamego High School Alumni Association and professionally was a member of the American Society of Illuminating Engineers and the National Electrical Contractors Association. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, bowling and was an avid KSU fan.

He was preceded in death his parents; one brother, Robert Machin; and one sister, Joan Hamm.

In addition to his wife, Lela, Mr. Machin is survived by a son, John W. Machin III, and his wife, Jan, Riley, KS; two daughters, Mary Hemphill and Margi Barber, and her husband, Bob, all of Manhattan; a step son, Harvey McCarter, and his wife, Marilyn, Dallas, TX; three step daughters, Dianna Smith, Topeka, Dorothy Cunningham, and her husband, Loyd, Colorado Springs, CO and Marilyn Molloy, and her husband, Richard, Tampa, FL; a brother, Harry L. Machin, Jr. St. Louis, MO; a sister, Betty Brunkow, Wamego; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Cremation in planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2005 in the First Christian Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Neil Engle and the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Zollie E. Larrabee, 95, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, December 3, 2005 in the Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center/Collins House, Manhattan.

She was born March 27, 1910 in Tucson, AZ territory, the daughter of John William Estill and Susie (Hoar) Estill. She moved, with her family, at an early age to Carrier, OK, where she grew up and attended the local schools. She later received a BA degree in education from Central State College, Edmund, OK.

She was united in marriage to I. E. Larrabee on August 21, 1935 at Carrier. He preceded her in death in March 1965.

Mrs. Larrabee had been a resident of Kingfisher, OK from 1936 until moving to Manhattan in January 1998. She was a homemaker and was a teacher in the Kingfisher school system. She was a member of the Kingfisher First Christian Church and the PEO Chapter Y and the Kingfisher Study Club.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Larrabee was preceded in death by a son, David Larrabee in June 1988; a brother; and two sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Friesen, Manhattan; a brother, Bill Estill, Enid, OK; four sisters, Ruth Bennett, Avis Gage and Jean Estill, all of Enid, and Iris Anderson, Waukomis, OK; three grandchildren, Chuck Long, and his wife, Kerry, Susie Troutt, and her husband, Doug and April Friesen; and five great grandchildren, Sandy, Bradley and Alex Long and Hannah and Sarah Troutt.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2005 in the First Christian Church, Kingfisher with the Rev. John Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in the Kingfisher Cemetery.

Obituary: Donald (Don) K. Sherley, Jr., 48, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, December 3, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born September 8, 1957 at Leavenworth, KS, the son of Donald K. Sherley, Sr. and Sharon L. Concannon Sherley. He came to Manhattan, with his family, as a small child and had been lifelong area resident. Don attended the local schools and was a 1975 graduated of Manhattan High School. He had also attended Kansas State University.

He was united in marriage to Carol E. Irvine on November 24, 1979 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

Don was a building contractor in Manhattan for many years and the co-owner of the Home Builders Company. He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Manhattan and loved to golf, hunt and fish. A strong supporter of youth sports in Manhattan, Don was active in and coached youth baseball for many years, particularly those teams involving his sons. He was also a strong supporter of the Manhattan High School Baseball and Football programs.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1986.

In addition to his wife, Don is survived by four sons, Dustin D. Sherley and Daniel K. Sherley, both of Topeka and Dylan P. Sherley and Dalton J. Sherley, both of Manhattan; his mother, Sharon L. Sherley and step father, Donald R. Duncan, Manhattan; and a sister, Lori L. Sherley, Manhattan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2005 in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Father Don Zimmerman as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Manhattan.

A Prayer Vigil Service, followed by Family Visitation, will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.
