Obituary: Georgine L. O’Malley, 84, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

She was born August 18, 1921 at Walker, KS, the 8th of nine children born to John Joseph Brown and Elizabeth Sander Brown. She attended schools at Walker and was a 1940 graduate of the Hays, KS High School.

She was united in marriage to Harold C. O’Malley on July 21, 1943 at Walker. He survives of the home.

Mrs. O’Malley had been a Manhattan resident since 1945. She was a homemaker and retired after 27 years at the Seven Dolors School Lunch Program as a baker and manager. For many years, her rolls and breads were served at various functions at the Seven Dolors Parish.

She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Other memberships included Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 Auxiliary, Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786 Auxiliary, both of Manhattan and American Legion Post No. 260 Auxiliary, St. George, where she had served as president. Former memberships included Konza Prairie Quilters, Man-Kan Campers, Sisters of the Scissors and past president of the Union Pacific Old Timers Club. She had served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and her hobbies included her family, cooking, quilting, dancing and singing.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathleen Anne O’Malley; her parents; 6 brothers, Windelin, Alexander, Benedict, Acqueline, Aloysius and Edwin Brown; and one sister, Margaret Riedel.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. O’Malley is survived by a daughter, Barbara Burson, and husband, Jerry and a son, John O’Malley and wife, Jody, all of Manhattan; a sister, Marcella Thyfault, Wheatridge, CO; seven grandchildren, Patricia Burson, Jeanette Burson, Gwendolyn Tedder, Mike Burson, Shawn O’Malley, John Paul O’Malley and Jeff O’Malley; and two great grandchildren, Thomas Reid Tedder and Tyler Troute.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2006 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. George Cemetery, St. George, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Georgine O’Malley Memorial Fund and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Obituary: Harold A. Robinson, 76, Wharton, NJ, the first African-American to play in the Big 7 Conference, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in his home.

Born in Manhattan in 1930, Mr. Robinson attended the local schools and was a 1948 graduate of the Manhattan High School. He attended Kansas State University and had lived in Wharton for over 38 years.

Mr. Robinson broke the “color barrier” in the Big 7 Conference when he was the first African-American scholarship athlete to play for Kansas State University and in 2003 was inducted into KSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was drafted and served in the US Army during the Korean War, where he was injured and received a purple heart. He was a member of the V.F.W and American Legion.

He was employed by Western Electric, a division of AT & T, in Union, NJ for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He then worked at Morris County Community College, Randolph, NJ until 1997. He was treasurer and active member of Local 1095, a CWA-AFLCIO Local and the Telephone Pioneers Club of America.

Harold, an avid jazz and blues aficionado, could often be heard playing his saxophone along with a record. His love of music was passed on to his children and grandchildren. He spent his retirement years traveling to Manhattan each fall to cheer on the KSU Wildcats. Wearing purple often to show his support and love for his alma mater, he was proud of his home state, the city of Manhattan and KSU.

Survivors include his wife, L. Ann Robinson, of the home; daughters, Beth R. Shann, Bloomfield, NJ, L. Melanie Robinson, Long Valley, NJ, Judith Robinson-Phillips (Pernell) of Wharton and Sherry L. Robinson, Long Valley, NJ; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the St. John’s United Methodist Church, 20 Church St., Wharton. A visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m., Friday, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 249 S. Main St., Wharton.

Additional services will be held in Manhattan with a family visitation on Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., when a procession will form to go to the Sunset Cemetery. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Obituary: LeMoyne “Blackie” Blackburn, 79, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, May 8, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born June 2, 1926 at Republican City, NE, the son of Ernest J. Blackburn and Neva B. Shaffer Blackburn. As a small child, his family moved to the Agra and Phillipsburg, KS area where he attended the local schools and was a 1943 graduate of the Agra High School.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Joan Coffin on January 16, 1949 at Phillipsburg, KS. She preceded him in death on April 29, 2003.

Mr. Blackburn farmed in the Agra and Phillipsburg area for several years before moving to Manhattan in 1956. He worked as a construction superintendent for the Hunter-Lundberg Construction Company for over thirty years and later for the Osborne Construction Company until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of Carpenters Unions Local No. 918.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Blackburn was preceded in death by parents; three brothers, Melvin, Gerald and Eldon Blackburn; and an infant grandson, Darrin C. Blackburn.

Survivors include two sons, Steven L. Blackburn, and his wife, Marla, Kansas City, MO and David R. Blackburn, and his wife, Janet, Manhattan; two sisters, Leota Watson, Oologah, OK and Myrna Morgan, Oklahoma City, OK; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Tom Albright officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Marie L. Bonawitz, 88, Wamego, KS passed away Monday, May 8, 2006 in the Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born October 22, 1917 at Deer Creek, OK, the daughter of Andrew Martin Storck and Bertha Kaebnick Storck. She grew up in Deer Creek, where she attended the local schools and later graduated from the Blackwell, OK High School.

While working for the Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita during World War II, as a wing riveter and jig maker, she met and later married Henry “Hank” D. Bonawitz on April 28, 1945 at Oklahoma City, OK. He preceded her in death on August 7, 2002.

The Bonawitz’s lived in Wichita for a short time before moving to the Manhattan area in 1946. Mrs. Bonawitz helped her husband in the Bonawitz Machine Shop for many years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Zeandale Community Church and her hobbies included gardening and collecting candles and teddy bears.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl A. Storck.

Survivors include four sons, Dan K. Bonawitz, and his wife, Pamela, San Pedro, CA, and Gary R. Bonawitz and his wife, Sharon, Jon M. Bonawitz, and his wife, Sherry and Tim L. Bonawitz, and his wife, Pat, all of Manhattan.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Dr. Wesley Paddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Manhattan.

Obituary: Earl C. Klocke, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, May 6, 2006 at his home.

He was born December 16, 1917 on the family farm near Randolph, KS, the son of August Henry Klocke and Helena Celena Sophie Wohler Klocke. He grew up on the farm and attended the local country school. In 1937, he was a graduate of the Barnes, KS High School.

He was united in marriage to Helen Frances Coonrod on December 21, 1941 at Keats, KS. She preceded him in death on August 18, 1988. He was later married to Cleo Madge Schurr Wohler on March 29, 1992 at Manhattan. She survives.

Mr. Klocke farmed in northern Riley County for many years. In 1965, he moved to the Los Angeles, CA area and worked for the Action Rental Company as a truck driver. He retired in 1983 and came back to Kansas to reside in Manhattan in 1992.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan and enjoyed working in the yard and cross word puzzles.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Klocke was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Elston H. Klocke; and a sister, Kathryn Berger.

Survivors include his wife, Cleo, of the home, three sons, Darryl C. Klocke, and his wife, Sally, Three Rivers, CA, Carroll F. Klocke, Springfield, MA and Jon E. Klocke, Encino, CA; four daughters, Dianna L. Schmitt, and her husband, Gerald, Wichita, KS, Marsha K. Clayton, and her husband, Gary, Kingsport, TN, Juanita S. Besant, and her husband, Bob, Chatsworth, CA and WenDee A. Cuneo, Valencia, CA; a step son, Larry E. Wohler, and his wife, Marilyn, Manhattan; a sister, Marjorie Whearty, Randolph, KS; 12 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Cremation will follow the service with inurnment at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 in the Fancy Creek Mt. Zion Cemetery, northwest of Randolph.

Obituary: Robert Ross “Bob” McEllhiney, 78, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, April 28, 2006 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

He was born September 22, 1927 at Princeton, Indiana, the son of Ross A. McEllhiney and Myrtle Staser McEllhiney. He grew up in Princeton and attended the local schools.

He dutifully served his country in the U.S. Army from 1945-1948 and returned to Indiana to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University in 1952 and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University in 1953. While at Purdue he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

Bob’s illustrious career included General Production Manager for Albers Milling Company, a division of the Carnation Company 1953-1975; Director of Production, Engineering, Quality Control and Vehicle Administration for ConAgra, Inc., in their Agri-Products and Consumer Products Divisions, 1975-1979; and Professor at Kansas State University in the Department of Grain Science 1979-1993, where he was Professor Emeritus. Notable honors included a charter member of the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). In 1992, he received the AFIA’s Distinguished Service Award and in 1997 was elected to the AFIA/KSU Feed Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

Bob was a prolific and distinguished writer of poetry, prose and technical publications, including editor and contributor to Feed Manufacturing Technology. He wrote a monthly newsletter to keep family and friends connected. He was a 58-year member of Prince Lodge No. 231, F. & A.M., Princeton, IN and the Scottish Rite and Tangier Shrine, both of Omaha, NE. Local memberships included Lafayette Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M., Past Worthy Matron of Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S., Manhattan Shrine Club and the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17. He was an active volunteer for the Flinthills Breadbasket from 1993-2006 and his commitments as an adult leader for the Masonic youth organizations, DeMolay and Job’s Daughters, will forever be remembered. Other activities included coaching numerous sports. His daughters can throw a football or baseball as well as any boy.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Theresa Hessig McEllhiney; four children, Karen Paris, and her husband, David, Universal City, TX, Mona McGregor, and her husband, Dale, Omaha, NE, Ross W. McEllhiney, and his wife, Dede, Shawnee, KS and Loretta McEllhiney, and her husband, Antonio James, Leadville, CO; five grandchildren, Stephanie Doran, Robert and Melanie McGregor and Dedan and Elise McEllhiney; and a sister, Jane Stein, Soldotna, AK.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery, Francisco, IN.

Obituary: Joseph G. Boyle, Jr., 86, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, April 28, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born August 15, 1919 at Manhattan, the son of Joseph G. Boyle, Sr. and Rose J. Cunningham Boyle. He grew up in Manhattan and attended the local schools.

Mr. Boyle spent many years working as an accountant for several different accounting firms throughout the country. He returned to Manhattan in 1975.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William E. Boyle.

Survivors include a sister, Phyllis Boyle, Manhattan; and several nephews and nieces.

Cremation is planned. A Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 1, 2006 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan. A recitation of the Rosary will precede the service at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Private family inurnment services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.
