Obituary: Lawrence Lee Nicholson, Jr., 44, Manhattan, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at his home. The family provided the following information.

He was born on September 18, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Lawrence Lee Nicholson, Sr. and Daisy Lee (McGee) Nicholson. He attended Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and the Manhattan Middle School. He later moved back to Chicago, Illinois where he graduated from Chicago Vocational High School. He also attended Daley Community College in Chicago, majoring in Electrical Engineering.

He was the devoted and beloved Pastor of the New Life Pentecostal Ministries of the Apostolic Faith Church here in Manhattan for more than nine years.

He married Carol E. Conditt on November 29, 1986. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two teenage daughters Ebony L. Nicholson and Essence L. Nicholson both of Manhattan; three brothers, Virgil U. Nicholson of Freemont, Calf.; James L. Nicholson of Firestone, Colo.; and Antwan E. Nicholson of Elgin, Illinois and two sisters Cassandra C. Nicholson and Aleisa N. Brunson, both of Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at the Mt. Zion Church of God In Christ, 916 Yuma Street, Manhattan. Interment will follow at the Sunrise Cemetery.

Obituary: Thomas James “Tom” Garver, 27, Ogden, KS passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from injuries sustain in an automobile accident on K-18 in Geary County, KS.

He was born October 2, 1979 at Frankfort, Germany, the son of Douglas Garver and Donna Weaver Garver. He grew up in Maryland and was a 1997 graduate of the Kent County High School.

Immediately after high school, Tom joined the U.S Army and was honorably discharged.

He had been a resident of the Manhattan/Ogden area since May 2005. He worked as an arborist for the Brinker Tree Service and had just recently become a certified arborist.

He was a volunteer coach for the Ogden Youth Program.

Survivors include his father, Douglas Garver, Honey Brook, PA; his mother, Donna Walters, Galena, MD; a sister, Michelle Garver, Boston, MA; two half brothers, Michael Markward, Bodines, PA and Johnny Walters, Galena, MD; and his fiancé, Tammie Millett, and her two sons, Chad and Kyle Millett, all of Ogden.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Judy Atwood officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Obituary: Emma Ruth Pesaresi, 85, St. George, KS passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the home of her son, Walt Pesaresi, Manhattan.

She was born September 14, 1921 at Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of Arie Lucas and Minnie Beltman Lucas. She grew up in northwest Iowa and attended the local schools. She later received her BS degree from the University of Iowa-School of Nursing at Iowa City. While attending college, she was active in music and played the French horn in the University of Iowa Marching Band.

She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Nurses Corp from 1944 until her discharge in 1946. Her hospital unit was stationed at Bastogne, immediately following the Battle of the Bulge.

She was united in marriage to Karl Pesaresi on July 20, 1945 at Paris, France. He preceded her in death on March 6, 1984.

Mrs. Pesaresi had been a resident of the Manhattan and St. George area since 1951. She worked as a nurse at the St. Mary’s Hospital and the Riley County Memorial Hospital for several years before joining the staff, as a registered nurse, at the Lafene Health Center on the K-State campus in 1960. She retired in 1990 after 30 years of service. For 10 years, from 1991until 2001 she spent her summers working at the Yellowstone National Park. She enjoyed reading, traveling, was an avid K-State sports fan and loved hearing from her granddaughters and great granddaughter.

he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan, the Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786 Auxiliary and the Happy-Go-Lucky Senior Citizens of St. George.

n addition to her husband, Mrs. Pesaresi was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Emerson and William Lucas.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Penner-Johnson, and her husband, Marc Johnson, Ft. Collins, CO; two sons, Karl Pesaresi, St. George and Walt Pesaresi, and his wife, Dorothy, Manhattan; two sisters, Henrietta Postma and Lois Kreykes, both of Sheldon, IA; two brothers, Howard Lucas, Sheldon, IA and Adrian Lucas, Ames, IA; four granddaughters, Allison Penner, Ashley Penner, Jennifer Majors, and her husband, Cary and Karri Bakalar, and her husband, Jon; one step grandson, Joe (Lee) Johnson; and one great granddaughter, Emily Majors.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the St. George Cemetery, St. George, KS.

Obituary: Stella M. Zeigler Noland, 85, Manhattan, passed away on October 6, 2006 at St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

She was born November 15, 1920 in Wamego. She was the daughter of Nickolas Zeigler and Margaret Haspert Zeigler.

She lived a lifetime in Manhattan and worked in the grocery business for over 54 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Jackie Bell, Manhattan and Cindy Kokernak, Virginia; a grandson, Aaron Bell, Plano, TX; two granddaughters, Laurie Enneking, Kansas City, KS and Lisa Mitchell, Manhattan; and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Jewel Zeigler, Emporia; and several nieces and nephews.

Her body was donated to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

Memorial services will be announced later by the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home.

Obituary: Ryan Matthew Kanost, 22, Lawrence, KS passed away Saturday, September 23, 2006 in Lawrence as a result of a pedestrian/car accident.

He was born October 11, 1983 at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the son of Michael Kanost and Jill Carpenter Kanost. He grew up and attended schools in Tucson, AZ and Manhattan, KS and was a 2002 graduate of the Manhattan High School. At the time of his death, Ryan was a senior at the University of Kansas, majoring in Biology and Spanish. He was preparing for a career in medicine.

Ryan volunteered in the Emergency Room at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he put patients at ease with his sense of humor and compassion. He particularly enjoyed coaching youth basketball, first in Manhattan and for the past several years in Lawrence.

He is survived by his parents, Michael and Jill Kanost, Manhattan; two sisters, Laura Kanost, and her husband, David Brooks, Lawrence and Leah Kanost, Manhattan; a brother, Nathan Kanost, Lawrence; and grandmothers, Evelyn Kanost, Broomfield, CO and Janet Carpenter, San Luis Obispo, CA. He was particularly devoted to his baby niece, Lillian Brooks Kanost, Lawrence.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 28, 2006 in the College Avenue United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Larry Fry officiating. Private family graveside services will precede the memorial service in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Herbert T. Yamabayashi, 72, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, September 18, 2006 at his home.

He was born October 7, 1933 in Kaumana, Territory of Hawaii, the son of Mamoru Yamabayashi and Toshiko Sakamoto Yamabayashi. He grew up in Kaumana and attended the local schools.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1950 at Ft. DeRussy, HI and entered the regular Army, while on extended active duty, in 1954. He retired from active duty on December 31, 1979 at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

While in the service, Mr. Yamabayashi was stationed in many U.S. bases, as well as Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded numerous medals and decorations including the Bronze Star for valor, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf cluster, VN Cross of Gallantry and eight Good Conduct Medals.

After his military retirement, Mr. Yamabayashi attended Kansas State University and graduated with a BS degree in Management in 1982. He worked in social services with the State of Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services until his retirement in 1995. He had lived in Junction City and Wamego and had been a Manhattan resident since 2004.

He was a past president of the Sundowners Lions Club, Junction City; Past President of the KSU Theatre Development Board; Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 16; and was a charter member of the Military Order of the Purple Hear Post No. 780.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana Yamabayashi, Los Angeles, CA and Jeanne Yamabayashi, Manhattan; a brother, Gilbert Yamabayashi, Rialto, CA; and three sisters, Naomi Rushman and June Nakamoto, both of Los Angeles and Lei Hirokane, Kaneohe, Hi; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Ft. Riley Cemetery, Ft. Riley, KS.

Obituary: Viola M. Holle, 97, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, September 14, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

She was born January 14, 1909 near Waterville, KS, the daughter of Lee and Faye Johnston Hubbard. She grew up at Barnes, KS, where she attended the rural schools near Barnes and graduated from the Greenleaf, KS High School in 1928.

She was married to George Hillmer in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1955. In 1958, she was married to Clarence Holle. He preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Evelyn Wesche.

Mrs. Holle was a rural school teacher for several years in Marshall and Washington counties. After moving to Manhattan in 1952, she worked for the J.C. Penney Company, Register of Deeds and volunteered for several years at the Manhattan Senior Center. She had been a member of the College Hill Extension Club and the College Hill Club. She was a member of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Manhattan.

Survivors include a step son, Donald Holle, and wife, Darleen, Riley, KS; two step grandsons; eight great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; a nephew, Larry Wesche, Manhattan; and a niece, Cheryl Trumble, Dayton, OH.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 18, 2006 in the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Joseph A. Jones officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday in the Hanover City Cemetery, Hanover, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or the Lutheran Hour Ministries and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Mrs. Holle will lie in state after 10:00 a.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
