Obituary: Eunice B. Silva, 77, Wakefield, KS passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2007 in the Clay County Medical Center, Clay City, KS.

She was born March 30, 1929 at Marysville, KS, the daughter of Norman E. Grovenburgh and Lucy L. Kipp Grovenburgh. She grew up in the Bala area of Riley County, KS and attended the local schools.

She was united in marriage to Julian Silva in 1947 at Manhattan. They were later divorced.

Mrs. Silva lived in Manhattan from the late 1940’s until moving to Kalamazoo, MI in the early 1960’s. She returned to Manhattan in the late 1970’s and had been living in Wakefield since 2000.

While living in Manhattan, Mrs. Silva worked at the McCall Pattern Company.

She was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Ray Silva; her parents; a brother, Lloyd Grovenburgh; and two sisters, Dottie Sare and Flossie Scofield.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Lee Snodgrass of Kansas; two sisters, Florence Swindell, Portage, MI and Tessie Bussart, Wamego, KS; two granddaughters; and many nephews and nieces.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2007 in the Valley View Memorial Gardens with Pastor Pat Weyrauch officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Memorial Gardens.

The family of Mrs. Silva will receive friends at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan, on Friday from 12:00 noon until a procession is formed to go the cemetery. Online condolences can be sent to www.irvinparkview.com.

Obituary: Rev. George Frank Brown, 86, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, March 03, 2007 in the Meadowlark Hills/Collins Landing, Manhattan.

He was born August 28, 1920 at Stillwater, OK, the son of Frank I. Brown and Myrtle Grace Denny Brown. He grew up in Stillwater and attended the local schools. In 1942, he received his B.A. degree in English and Spanish from Oklahoma A & M., Stillwater.

He was a veteran of the World War II, serving in the European Theatre with the U.S. Army. He was discharged in 1945 at the rank of Lieutenant.

He was united in marriage to Mary Virginia Six on May 30, 1943 at Palm Springs, CA. She preceded him in death on April 1, 1997.

After returning from the war, Mr. Brown attended seminary at Phillips University, Enid, OK and received his Masters of Divinity in 1949. He served churches in Coldwater, KS, Denison, KS, Poteau, OK, Lindsay, OK and Midwest City, OK. and later churches in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Ruidoso, Artesia, and Carlsbad NM and El Paso, TX. He had also taught at the Alamogordo High School, the Alamogordo Community College and for three years taught in the John F. Kennedy High School on Guam. He had been a Manhattan resident since December 2001.

In addition to his wife, Rev. Brown was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Brown; and three sisters, Lottie Bishop, Elva Tull and Beth Stratton.

Survivors include four sons, Philip G. Brown, and his wife, Reba, Longview, TX, Stephen F. Brown, and his wife, Marcia, Salem, OR, David W. Brown, Bayfield, CO and Joel Brown, and his wife, Kathy, Tupelo, MS; a daughter, Rosemary R. Morrow, and her husband, Lee, Manhattan; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 10, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Revs. Neil Engle and Philip Brown officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Obituary: Clinton B. Hamilton, 78, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born March 27, 1928 at Augusta, KS, the son of Silas H. Hamilton and Ora Jenny Barker Hamilton. He grew up in Augusta, attending the local schools and was a 1946 graduate of the Augusta High School. He had also attended Wichita State University.

He was married to Barbara Smith in 1954. He was later married to Beatrice Chapman on May 6, 1993. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2002. He was married to Kathleen Ball on May 22, 2004. She survives of the home.

Mr. Hamilton had been a resident of Manhattan since 1981 and was a member of the Pitch Card Club at the Riley County Senior’s Service Center.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by a son, Robert John Hamilton in 1978 and his parents.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hamilton is survived by a daughter, Virginia Forshee, Salina and her husband, Mike Forshee, Concordia, KS; two step daughters, Theresa Cloud, Kit Carson, CO and Mary Kay Eiserer, Olathe, KS; two brothers, John R. Hamilton, Topeka, KS and Robert G. Hamilton, Alameda, CA; a sister, Delores MacIntosh, Buffalo, KS; and two grandsons, Matthew and Geoffrey Forshee.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Thelma V. Soper, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, February 26, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

She was born September 15, 1918 at Wamego, KS, the daughter of Harvey H. Dix and Nancy Elvera Jane Puett Dix. She moved to Manhattan as a small child in 1920 and attended the local schools. She was a 1936 graduate of the Manhattan High School.

She was united in marriage to Franklin “Frank” E. Soper on June 22, 1936 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on October 24, 2000.

Mrs. Soper was a well-known cook and pastry chef in the Manhattan area for many years. She ran a bake shop in the Ramada Inn for five years and worked as a cook in the local sororities for over 30 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Manhattan for over 60 years and served as a life deacon and Sunday school teacher. Other memberships included the ESA International Delta Omega Chapter, Riverside Community Improvement Club, Searchers Club, Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786 Auxiliary and the KSU-Terry C. Johnson Anti-Cancer Research Council. Her hobbies included baking, needlework, sewing at the church on quilts, writing to the elderly in rest homes, visiting with friends and sharing her home-baked pies and cinnamon rolls.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Soper was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harvey Dix; and three sisters, Ferrol Butterwick, Fern Headrick and Delta Goheen.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia A. Pearson, and her husband, Fred, Osage City, KS; two sons, Adrian H. Soper, and his wife, Loretta, Evansville, WY and David F. Soper, and his wife, Debra, Manhattan; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; and one step great great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Revs. Neil Engle and Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Mary Ellen Hoerner, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, February 19, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born November 22, 1926 at Manhattan, the daughter of Claude Cox and Anna Diskau Cox. She grew up in Manhattan where she attended the local schools and was a 1945 graduate of the Manhattan High School.

She was united in marriage to Robert E. Hoerner on May 26, 1945 at Manhattan. He survives of the home.

The Hoerner’s farmed near Olsburg for 5 years and in the Ashland Bottoms area, south of Manhattan, for many years before moving to Manhattan in 1971. Mrs. Hoerner worked as a server and kitchen helper in food service with the Manhattan school district until her retirement.

She attended the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church and was a past president of the Fortnightly Club. She loved to knit, read and was a caring and loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Shirley Little.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hoerner is survived by four daughters, Kay Powell, and her husband, Toby, St. George, Judy Livingston, and her husband, Robert, and Betty Schneweis, and her husband, Matt, all of Manhattan and Janet Chase, and her husband, John, Leonardville; four grandchildren, Bret Hartigan, Jason Barry, George Quick and Ashley Quick; and one great grandson, Allan Hartigan.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Wayne Castle officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Roger C. Trenary, age 60, Roe R. Cross Instructor in Economics and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Economics at Kansas State University, died at home on Tuesday, February 13, following a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

He was born February 27, 1946 in Detroit, MI to Mary Lee Trenary and the late Glenn Trenary. Roger was preceded in death by his father, and sister, Carol Trenary. He is survived by his wife, Kate Philp; son, Ben; and fiancée, Trish Gott of Manhattan; brother, Robert Trenary of Farmington, Michigan; his mother of Michigan; Katie’s mom, Mary Ellen Philp, and Katie’s siblings, Nancy Philp, Suzie Philp Northway, Jamie Dabrowski, Margaret Moulis and Jerry Philp.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit, Roger came to Kansas State in 1977, and quickly established himself as one of the greatest teachers on campus. During his 29-year career at KSU, Roger taught some 24,000 students, quite possibly the most ever taught by a single individual at K-State. Teaching was Roger’s gift. He won the Stamey Award for outstanding teaching in the College of Arts and Science four times. He also received the Commerce Bank Teaching Award, and won the coveted University wide Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in 1998.

Roger was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2003. In a remarkable demonstration of their appreciation for what Roger has meant to them, his former students were instrumental in raising the predominant portion of the $600,000 endowment that has been pledged for the Trenary Chair in Economics. Roger’s colleagues, friends, and family also contributed significantly to the drive.

A memorial service will be held at All Faith Chapel on Kansas State’s campus at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the KSU Foundation (Trenary Chair in Economics), ALS Society, or the Roger Trenary Tennis and Education Fund, Manhattan Community Foundation and sent in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home. She was born May 10, 1940 at St. Pongau, Austria, the daughter of Anton Sivak and Anna Heigenhauser Sivak. She grew up in Austria and attended the local schools.

She was united in marriage to Herbert Eley on April 15, 1964 in Germany. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Eley came to the United States in December 1965 and had been a Manhattan resident since February 1968. She worked as an executive housekeeper for the Ramada Inn for many years.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Eley is survived by a son, Anthony L. Eley of Minnesota; a daughter, Evelyn V. West, Manhattan; and three grandchildren, Erika L. West, Jordyn Eley and Jeremy Eley.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 16, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Devin Wendt officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Obituary: Mary Georgia “Dutch” Monnat, 87, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007 in the Meadowlark Hills/Collins Landing, Manhattan.

She was born September 16, 1919, on the family farm, near Hanover, KS, the daughter of John Henry Hellman and Mary Alice Lane Hellman. She grew up in the Hanover and Barnes areas of Kansas and attended the local schools. She had also attended a business school in St. Joseph, MO.

She was united in marriage to Francis J. “Frank” Monnat on November 8, 1944 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on January 13, 2000.

While following her husband’s construction career, Mrs. Monnat lived in Croghan, NY and other communities for many years. In 1979, they retired and moved back to Manhattan to live permanently.

She was a homemaker and had been a longtime member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Manhattan.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Monnat was preceded in death by two infant children; her parents; three brothers, John, Cyril and George Hellman; and two sisters, Theta Kathleen Hoppenstedt Robbins and Janet Elisabeth Mengers.

Survivors include a daughter, Colleen J. Scroggin, Manhattan; a son, Gerald F. “Jerry” Monnat, and his wife, Donna Phillips, Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Sean Monnat, Jackson, MO, Colin Monnat, St. Louis, MO, and Michael and Eryn Scroggin, both of Siloam Springs, AR; and two great grandsons, Kobi and Isak Scroggin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 14, 2007 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Hanover, KS.

A Vigil and Rosary service will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.
