Obituary: Melvin G. Emig, age 85, died October 10, 2007. He was born on January 24, 1922 on the family farm south of Abilene to George W. Emig and Lottie (Gardner) Emig.

He attended Scotia, a one-room school in rural Dickinson Co. and later the Abilene schools. He married Lurye Root of Enterprise on August 16, 1943. They lived in numerous places including Abilene, Manhattan, Marysville, Hutchinson and Laverne and Poway, California.

He spent most of his working life in the insurance business. He retired as a corporate vice president of the Security Pacific Insurance Subsidiaries of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold and Orville, and sister Iva Gilder.

He is survived by wife Lurye of the home, daughter Kathleen Emig, Manhattan, son Michael and wife Jo of Holt, Mo., son David and wife Marsha of Emporia, and his sister Ruby Hosie and husband Dean of Abilene. Sisters-in-law Bernadine Emig, Edna Emig and Opal Whitehair also survive, as well as brother in law Norman Root and wife, Velda. Six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews survive.

Melvin was a member of First United Methodist Church of Manhattan, and a former member of Poway Community Church of Poway, CA. He served on the Poway church Building Committee and was proud of the finished building. He attended Mt. Pleasant church in his youth. It is fitting that his memorial service is here in this special place.

Melvin and Lurye were active in the founding of the Riley County Genealogical Society of Manhattan, KS. They enjoyed combining travel and family research. He was a member of the Little Apple Barbershop chorus and sang with quartets as well as the chorus.

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, south of Abilene off Highway 15.

The family requests no flowers but would be honored to have friends and relatives attend the service, followed by visiting and lunch. Mt. Pleasant church is south of Abilene, six miles on highway 15 where there is a sign, and west 5 miles, then south a short distance.

The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan, is handling funeral arrangements.

Obituary: Lois E. Dix, 89, Scottsdale, AZ, a former Manhattan resident, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2007 in Scottsdale.

She was born January 18, 1918 at Burlingame, KS, the daughter of Marion Avery and Helen Margaret Larson Avery.

She was united in marriage to Harvey Owen Dix in 1937. He passed away in 1965. She was later married to Aubrey McDaniel in 1973. He passed away in 1993.

Mrs. Dix had lived in Manhattan for many years before moving to the Scottsdale and Mesa areas in 1971.

Survivors include two sons, Von E. Dix, and his wife, Brenda, Scottsdale and Roger Dix, and his wife, Jenny, Maui, HA; a daughter, Barbara Bock, and her husband, Duane, Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 11, 2007 in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Moon-Hee Chung officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to meet at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, to form a procession to the cemetery.

Obituary: Roy G. Howard, 79, St. George, KS passed away Saturday, September 15, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.

He was born October 5, 1927 at Wamego, KS, the son of Fred Howard, Sr. and Mary Anna Ehlers Howard. He grew up in the St. George and Wamego communities, attending the local schools, and was a graduate of the St. George High School.

He was united in marriage to Dorene F. Prockish on February 15, 1948 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

Mr. Howard worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 33 years, retiring in 1983.

After retirement, he worked as an auctioneer, volunteering many hours of his time to charity auctions. He called bingo at the Blackjack American Legion Post, St. George for over 30 years and was an active leader in the 4-H program. He enjoyed bus tours and loved to garden and selling his produce.

He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan and the Black Jack American Legion Post, St. George.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Viola Hoffman, Geneva Blume and Alta McCarter; and four brothers, Arvle, Frank, Fred and Delmar Howard.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Howard is survived by three sons, Dennis Howard, and his wife, Pat, Halstead, KS, Jerry Howard, and his wife, Cindy. Lees Summit, MO and Dr. William Howard, and his wife, Donna, Watertown, SD; two sisters, Hazel Kufahl, and her husband, William, Wheaton, KS and Anomia Elder, Wamego; six grandchildren, Jeff Howard, and his wife, Becky, Lenexa, KS, Ryan Howard, and his wife, Susan, Shawnee, KS, Jason Howard, and his wife, Connie, Wichita, KS, Alexandra Howard, St. Louis, MO and Gabrielle and Colten Howard, both of Watertown, SD; a step granddaughter, Elizabeth Haddock, Birmingham, AL; and five great grandchildren, Grant and Caden Howard, Lenexa, KS, Ryann and McCoy Howard, Shawnee, KS and Finneas Howard, Wichita.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery, Wamego, KS.

A Rosary and Vigil service will be conducted by Father Merlin Kieffer at 7:30 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Julia M. Matthews, 96, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, August 31, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born August 3, 1911 at Brownstown, IN, the daughter of John and Belle Smallwood. She grew up in Brownstown and was a graduate of the Brownstown High School. She later became a certified teacher through the normalcy school program.

She was united in marriage to Martin W. Matthews on March 24, 1934 at Jeffersonville, IN. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1994.

Mrs. Matthews lived in several communities including Chicago, Omaha, Sioux City, IA, and Pickstown and Meckling, SD, while following her husband’s journeyman electrical engineering career. In 1957 they moved to Manhattan when Mr. Matthews starting working on the Tuttle Creek and Milford Reservoir Projects. She was a homemaker and a member of Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Taylor on August 8, 2007; her parents; three brothers, Lee, Walter and William Smallwood; two sisters, Ethel Baughman and Nell Zuckworth; and one granddaughter, Julie Hontz.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Downs, Manhattan; a son, John Matthews, and his wife, Pat, Bonner Springs, KS; a brother-in-law, Lee Matthews; three grandchildren, Dionne Gauthier, Dr. John Mark Taylor and David Parker; and four great grandchildren, Kaela and Baylie Hontz and Gabriel and Tyler Parker.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Pastor Jim Kiker officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan with Eastern Star committal services.

Obituary: Max C. “Pops” McCoy, 93, a former Manhattan resident, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007 in the Colmery-O’Neil V.A. Medical Center, Topeka, KS.

He was born April 25, 1914 at Omaha, NE, the son of Cary McCoy and Lela Sullivan McCoy. He grew up in Omaha, where he attended the local schools and graduated from Technical High School. He had also attended Omaha University.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jacqueline “Jackie” Reynolds on September 9, 1941 at Kansas City, MO. They had lived in Omaha and Dallas before moving to Manhattan in 1957. In August 2006, they moved to Topeka to be closer to their children. Mrs. McCoy passed away November 22, 2006.

He was a member of the U.S. Army and served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He served in North Africa and Sicily and had been awarded the Purple Heart with one bronze oak leaf cluster.

For many years, Max was a salesman for several different companies. He also managed the Ft. Riley Custer Hill Post Exchange for a number of years. After retirement, he worked part time as an assistant to the equipment manager for the Kansas State University football team. He enjoyed this job for 16 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan and was a life time member of the Lee Pierson V.F. W. Post No. 1786, the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Survivors include four sons, Gary McCoy, and his friend, Diane, Steve McCoy, and his wife, Penny and Bob McCoy, all of Topeka and Tom McCoy and his wife, Linda, Valencia, CA; a daughter, Nancy Koening, and her husband, Ernie, Hope, KS; a sister-in-law, Joan Reynolds, Omaha, NE; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McCoy was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Josephine O’Connor.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 1, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

The family of Mr. McCoy will receive friends from 10:00 a.m., Saturday until service time at the funeral home.

Obituary: Harriet Ebberts, 96, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2007 in her home.

She was born April 6, 1911 on the family farm near Piedmont, KS, the daughter of Herbert I. Courtney and Allie Ezell Courtney. She grew up near Piedmont, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Piedmont High School. She later became a certified teacher through the normalcy school program and taught in a small one-room school house, near her family home, for a year.

She was united in marriage to George Orval Ebberts on May 10, 1930 at Eureka, KS. He preceded her in death on September 30, 1981.

Mrs. Ebberts lived in several small communities in central Kansas, while following her husband’s teaching career. In 1943, they moved to Manhattan when Mr. Ebberts accepted the job as principal at the Eugene Field Elementary School. Mrs. Ebberts was a homemaker and always kept busy raising a garden, canning and keeping her house for her family.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan and belonged to several bridge clubs.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ebberts was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley L. Ramsey on July 21, 2007; her parents; two brothers, Hobart and Marvin Courtney; and a sister, Helen Hutton.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Radley Ramsey, Jami Ramsey and David Ramsey, and his wife, Melanie, all of Manhattan and Stuart Ramsey, and his wife, Anne, Houston, TX; eight great grandchildren, Joshua, Owen and Taylor Patterson, Ryan and Cole Ramsey and Paul, Kirk and Courtney Ramsey; and a sister, Pauline Spitzer, Thomasville, GA.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2007 in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Moon-Hee Chung officiating. Family and friends are invited to meet at the cemetery.

Obituary: Flaurence V. Hackerott, 94, Manhattan, KS, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 in the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center/Ptacek House, Manhattan.

She was born February 16, 1913, at Manhattan, the daughter of Laurence Sumners and Grace E. Clary. She grew up in Manhattan, where she attended the local schools. She lived most of her life in Manhattan.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Lamkin in 1930. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1948. She later married Elmer H. Hackerott on June 20, 1955 at Bentonville, AK. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Mrs. Hackerott worked as a nurse aide for the Wharton Manor Nursing Home for a period of time. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan. She was active in the Circle at the church. She lived her life as a humble servant, much like Jesus, whom she entrusted her life to. She passed that legacy on to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Joe, Dick, Jack and Bob Sumners and a daughter, Gracie B. Nettles.

Survivors include one sons, Edgar E. Lamkin, and his wife, Barbara, Blanco, TX; a daughter, Bettie L. Rogers, and her husband, Nicholas, Manhattan; three brothers, Charles, Junior and Darlie “Lucky” Sumner all of McPherson; and two sisters, Sally Lamkin and Anna Marie Donovan both of McPherson; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Williams officiating. Graveside service will follow at Sunrise Cemetery
