Obituary: Joyce A. Garrels, 76, St. George, KS, and formerly of Manhattan, passed away Monday, September 8, 2008 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born December 11, 1931 at Abilene, KS, the daughter of Fay Cartwright Needham and Nellie May Clark Needham. She grew up in Holton, KS, where she attended the local grade school and, after moving back to Abilene, graduated from the Abilene High School in 1949. She had been a Manhattan resident since 1949.

She was united in marriage to Loyal “Yo” Edward Garrels on February 8, 1953 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on March 25, 2002.

Mrs. Garrels was a homemaker and had worked as a secretary before her marriage.

She was a member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed singing with the congregation. She also spent many hours singing with the Sweet Adelines, Flint Hills Masterpiece Theatre, Manhattan Choral Group, the Kansas Bach Choir and in the Messiah at Wamego.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Garrels was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Nellie Mae Judah; and a brother, Robert A. Needham.

Survivors include a son, Lance F. Garrels, Laurel, MT; a daughter, Cyndra E. Garrels, St. George; two brothers, Melvin L. Needham, Salina, KS and Herbert C. Needham, and his wife, Emma, Charleston, SC; a sister, Marian E. Foutch, Salina and Billie Needham, Abilene; along with many nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Ave., Manhattan.

Obituary: Diana L. Martin, 71, St. George, KS passed away Friday, August 22, 2008 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan, KS.

She was born March 26, 1937 at Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Gail William Martin and Zedith Maude Irvine Martin. She spent her early years in Kansas City and moved to Manhattan as a teenager. She was a 1955 graduate of the Manhattan High School.

She was united in marriage to Gilbert Martin on June 4, 1955 at Manhattan. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Martin lived in Manhattan for a number of years and in Colorado from 1962 until 1983 when she moved back to the Manhattan area.

She was a certified nurses aid and worked at the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Wharton Manor Nursing Home, Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center and the Homecare & Hospice of Manhattan before retiring in 2001.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Manhattan.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Martin is survived by three sons, Chris Martin, Wray, CO, Matt Martin, Idalia, CO and Jeff Martin, Loveland, CO; three daughters, Cheri Martin, Denver, CO, Monica King, Topeka, KS and Alica Davis, Barstow, CA; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant son, Steven Martin.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan, with the Rev. Christy E. Dew officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Obituary: Kenneth James McAtee, 78, St. George, KS passed away Monday, August 25, 2008 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

He was born November 9, 1929 at Summerfield, KS, the son of William McAtee and Ruby Mae Graham McAtee. He grew up in the Summerfield community and attended the local country schools.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 until his discharge as a Sergeant in 1959.

He was united in marriage to Lorene H. Meyer on November 21, 1954 at Marysville, KS. She survives of the home.

Mr. McAtee spent over 50 years working in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. For 31 years, he worked for the Grosshans & Peterson Construction Company, Marysville, KS, building highways and later railroads and from 1978 until his retirement in 1998 worked for the Neosho Construction Company, Council Grove, KS.

He lived in numerous locations, while working on construction, and was a resident of Joplin, MO from 1985 until moving to the Manhattan area in 1998.

He was a member of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Manhattan and served as an usher for the church. He was also a member of the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Manhattan and enjoyed working in his yard and playing golf.

In addition to his wife, Mr. McAtee is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Bingham, and her husband, Dustin Heronemus, Liberal, KS; two brothers, Gerald E. McAtee, and his wife, Marie, Jewell, KS and Keith McAtee, and his wife, Sharon, Stewartville, MN; a sister, Anna Arnold, Puyallup, WA; and two granddaughters, Jamie Dawn Gilbert and Jessica Renee Gilbert, both of Liberal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Jr., Merlin and Marion McAtee; and a sister, Ruby Mae McAtee.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2008 in the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Joseph A. Jones officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Axtell, KS.

Obituary: L. Marigold Peterson, 95, a lifelong Manhattan, KS area resident, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in the Westy Community Care Home, Westmoreland, KS.

She was born November 21, 1912 at Manhattan, the daughter of Emil Olaf Peterson and Louise A. Olson Peterson. She grew up in Manhattan where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Manhattan High School. She had also attended Kansas State University.

For 20 years, Ms. Peterson lived at Garrison, KS and moved back to Manhattan in 1959 after being displaced by the new Tuttle Creek Reservoir. She had worked as a sales clerk at the local J.C. Penney store for a number of years and spent many years as a caregiver to her family members.

She was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and volunteered at the church’s Encore Shop. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include a niece, Joan Addington, Tecumseh, KS; great nephews, Greg, Rusty, Mark, Matthew and John Addington; a great niece, Sharon Netheron; and numerous great great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Paul Peterson; and four sisters, Madeline Watt, Maurine Waterman, Martha Addington and Margaret Addington.

Obituary: Frank Orazem, 83, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born January 19, 1925 in Slovenia, Yugoslavia, the son of Marko Orazem and Marija Merhar Orazem. Raised in Yugoslavia during the civil war and communist occupation, he escaped from a military camp into the British zone of Austria at the age of 20. After World War II, he qualified to attend Karl Franzens University in Austria and graduated with a degree in Political Economy in 1949.

As a political refugee, he came to the United States in 1949 to live with an uncle in Butte, MT. Ten months later he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in September 1952.

While stationed at Ft. Riley, Mr. Orazem met Slava Furlan, also a refugee from Yugoslavia. They were married on June 30, 1953 at Salina, KS. She passed away September 21, 2005.

Mr. Orazem received his MS degree from Kansas State University in 1953 and a PhD from Iowa State University in 1956. Dr. Orazem joined the faculty at K-State in 1956 as an Assistant Professor, earned his Associate Professorship in 1960 and was a Professor of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State from 1966 until his retirement in September 1990. During those years, he served as a Fulbright Lecturer and Visiting Professor at the University of Naples, Italy (1964-1965) and as a consultant at seminars in Hungary, New Delhi, Uganda and was a Consulting Editor for the Review of Business and Economic Research. His textbook “Production Economics” written with John Doll was a standard book used in colleges and universities around the world.

Honorary and professional memberships included the Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, American Farm Economic Association, International Association of Agricultural Economists and the Association for Social Economics. He was the recipient of the 1973 Gamma Sigma Delta Teaching Award, the 1973 recipient of the Social Science Graduate Faculty Award and the 1978 Gamma Sigma Delta Faculty Award. He was a member of the Kansas State Faculty Senate 1973-1981 and 1985-1991., President-Faculty Senate Executive Committee 1977-1978, President-Kansas State University Faculty Senate 1977-1978 and was on the K.S.U. Graduate Council 1976-1979.

Community involvement included the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lucky High School Board, Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Manhattan Sertoma Club, faculty sponsor and organizer of the KSU Soccer Club, coached Little League Baseball, was an interpreter for the Riley County Police Department, served as director for the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, chairman of the Kansas Rural Life Commission and his entry “CICO” was the winning entry in the naming of the new city and county fairgrounds in 1964.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Orazem was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marko Orazem; and a sister, Marija Orazem.

Survivors include three sons, Mark E. Orazem, and his wife, Jennifer, Gainesville, FL, Peter F. Orazem, and his wife, Patti, Ames, IA and Thomas C. Orazem, and his wife, Patricia, Manhattan; two daughters, Mary Anne Martins, and her husband, Bob, Alexandria, VA and Helena E. Grinter, and her husband, Mark, Manhattan; two sisters, Ana Merhar and Frances Furlan, both of Slovenia; four grandchildren, Matthew Orazem, Katie Orazem, Anna Grinter and James Grinter; and three step grandchildren, Erika, Nicole and Derek Schmidt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., Friday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan followed by a family visitation at 8:00 p.m.

Obituary: Ruth D. Burkart, 85, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, July 4, 2008 in the St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.

She was born January 8, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Raymond Tucker and Agnes Ehmann Tucker. She attended elementary and high school in Philadelphia and was a 1940 graduate of the Frankfort High School. She was a member of the Acapella Choir and sang at the dedication of both the Franklin Institute and the Museum of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She attended Drexel Institute, where she majored in Home Economics. She was the Captain of the Drexel’s Women’s Rifle team for two years and graduated in 1944.

She was united in marriage to Alexander George Burkart on June 14, 1947 in Philadelphia. He preceded her in death in 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara-Jean Hartnett, and her husband, David, of Manhattan; a son, Alex Raymond Burkart, Herndon, VA; six grandchildren, Katherine Hartnett, Becky Carnes, Virginia Burkart, Melissa Velazquez, Alex Burkart and David Hartnett; and two great grandchildren, William and Carrie Burkart.

Ruth taught Home Economics as well as mathematics in Junior and Senior High School. She also taught 4th and 6th grade. She moved several times in her adult life, living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois and Florida before moving to Kansas in 1986. She was a homemaker and mother for many years and was active in scouting, serving as a den mother, Boy Scout leader, Brownie leader and Girl Scout leader. She was an avid seamstress and loved making crafts, playing cards and other games. Ruth was active in her churches in early years and served as a deacon and elder. She was currently a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Manhattan.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2008 in the Chapel at the St. Joseph Village with the Rev. Steve Ratliff presiding. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Obituary: Ralph R. Drouhard, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Stoneybrook Assisted Living, Manhattan.

He was born December 12, 1927 in Wooster, OH, the son of Ralph H. Drouhard and Mary Jane Mackey Drouhard. As a small boy, he moved with his family to Canfield, OH, where he grew up attending the local schools and was a graduate of the Canfield High School. He later attended Youngstown College, Youngstown, OH.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He earned the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars.

He was united in marriage to Lois E. Coates on June 5, 1965 in Canfield, OH.

Mr. Drouhard worked many years as a Paint Line Operator for the Pittsburgh/Canfield Steel Company in Canfield before retiring in 1992. The Drouhards lived in Canfield and North Lima, OH before moving to Manhattan in March 2007.

For many years, Mr. Drouhard was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, North Jackson, OH. Since coming to Manhattan, he had transferred his membership to the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and was also a member of the Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Beall and Elizabeth Ann Kochert.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Drouhard is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Peterson, and her husband, David, Manhattan; a brother, Charles L. Drouhard, and his wife, Joyce, Canfield; a sister, Catherine Lewis, Erie, PA; a brother-in-law, F. Nelson Kochert, Canfield; and three grandchildren, Jordan, Brendan and Meghann Peterson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 30, 2008 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Additional services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2008 in the St. James Catholic Church, North Jackson, OH with Father David Merzweiler as celebrant. Viewing and visitation will be from 10:00 until service time at the church. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Boardman, OH.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 29, 2008 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with a visitation to follow at 7:30 p.m.
