Roy L. Rakes

PERRYVILLE -- Roy Lee Rakes, 82, of White Oak Road, Junction City, died Thursday at Charleston Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 12, 1918, in Marion County, he was the son of the late Jim Ed and Mary R. Veatch Rakes. He was a retired tree trimmer having worked 28 years for Asphlundh tree service. He was an Army veteran of World War II and attended Alum Springs Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Ada Frances Hornsby Rakes; a son, Michael Rakes of Junction City; five daughters, Barbara J. Rodriguez of Lee Summit, Mo., Stella Rakes of Danville, Brenda Foley of Lexington, Frances Shelton of Stanford and Regina G. Schiefers of Moreland; a sister, Louise Tungate of Lincoln, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday with military rites at Camp Nelson National Cemetery by Don Drake and Junior Fields.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Wilder Funeral Home.

Dewey McDonald

LIBERTY-- Dewey McDonald, 100, of Jonathan Fork Road died Thursday at Liberty Care Center.

Born July 30, 1900, in Gilpin, he was the son of the late Seth and Lucy Elmore McDonald. He was a farmer and a member of Athens Church of Christ.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ritty Hopper McDonald; second wife, Rosa Mae Hatter McDonald; a daughter, Maxine Simpson; and a grandson.

Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Bartle Funeral Home by Arnold Larkins and Thaddeus Eubank. Burial will be in Poplar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Sherrill, Jeffrey, Mark and Verdie Abell, Gary and Tim McDonald.

Elsie Gabehart

LIBERTY -- Elsie Gabehart, 78, of Ky. 49 died Thursday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Mose and Sally Harrison Shanklin. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Gabehart; and a brother, Bill Shanklin of Washington.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home by Clifton Cowan and Vernon Blakey. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. today.

LIBERTY -- Myra Hogue, 53, of Jamestown died Wednesday at Georgetown Community Hospital. She was the wife of Ernest Hogue. Arrangements are incomplete at Bartle Funeral Home.

David L. McFarland

LIBERTY -- David L. McFarland, 71, of Hwy. 1547 died Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital.

Born April 20, 1929, in Wess, he was the son of the late Samuel D. and Mary Barlow McFarland. He was a retired minister, a retired teacher and farmer. He taught at Highland and Waynesburg elementary schools and pastored several churches in Lincoln and Casey counties. He also was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Christian Motorcyclists Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Boggus McFarland; two sons, David L. McFarland and Timothy W. McFarland, both of Berea; two daughters, Martha James of Liberty and Rebekah Dixon of Lawrenceburg; four sisters, Martha Allen of Eaton, Ohio, Nettie Tapscott of Somerville, Ohio, Rose Vivian of Lexington, and Ruth Wethington of Indianapolis; two brothers, Paul McFarland of Shelby City and Watson McFarland of Liberty; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary E. Martin; and a grandchild.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Dolphus Barlow and John Cummins. Burial will be in Peavey Cemetery with military rites by the Casey County Funeral Squad.

Pallbearers will be Junior McFarland, William Stafford, Terrill Edwards, Stanley Coffman, Steve Wethington and Jerry Allen.

Honorary pallbearers are David Wethington, Steven and Jimmy McFarland, and Randy Martin.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today at Bartle Funeral Home and after noon Saturday at the church.

Anna L. Walls

HARRODSBURG -- Anna L. Walls, 75, of Burgin died today at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Dortha M. Gilmer

MORELAND -- Services for Dortha Myers Gilmer, 86, of Moreland will be 2 p.m. Sunday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by the Revs. Bill Minor and David Smith. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery.

She died Wednesday at her home.

Pallbearers will be Jim Kelley, Elwood Brown, Dale Smith, Haskel Wesley, and Eric and Joel Gilmer.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

Bonnie McRay

HARRODSBURG -- Services for Bonnie McRay, of Louisville, formerly of Harrodsburg, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home by the Rev. Mary Beth Guy and James Harley. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

She died Thursday at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville.

Born Sept. 27, 1923, in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Iva Corn Long. She was a homemaker, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and the widow of Johnny McRay.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Emmetsberger of Louisville and Marie McRay of Harrodsburg; and a brother, Loman Long of Arkansas.

Pallbearers will be Kevin and Norman Sallee, Kenneth Long, Dudley Long and Keith Emmetsberger.

Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Friday and after 7 a.m. Saturday.

Velma Merrick

HARRODSBURG -- Services for Velma Merrick, 71, formerly of East Factory Street, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home by Kenneth Smith and Gary Story. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

She died Thursday at Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 24, 1929, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Caleb and Nettie Redford Hafley. She was a member of Shakertown Baptist Church and a retired employee of Beaumont Inn.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Porter of Campbellsville and Billy Porter of Gravel Switch; a daughter, Judy Stoddard of Burgin; a brother, Frank Hafley of Lebanon; three sisters, Geraldine Green of Lebanon, Sarah Overstreet of Florida, and Margaret Cox of Forkland; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Pallbearers will be Lester Hayden, Junior Green, Tommy Jewel, and Dale, Robert and Carl Hill.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today and after 7 a.m. Saturday at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

Don Helton

Don C. Helton, 69, of Lebanon Road, Danville, died Tuesday at his home.

Born Aug. 4, 1931 in Tateville to the late N.D. and Dessie Wallace Helton, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include a wife, Jean Helton; two sons, Donald Helton Jr. of Phoenix, Az., and Dale Helton of Louisville; two daughters, Debra Pixley and Lori Wilson, both of Danville; a sister, Julia Gholson of Cincinnati; two brothers, Walter Helton of Cookville, Tenn., and James Helton of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home by Rev. Doug Wesley and Rev. Ernest Martin. Burial will be in Sloan's Valley Cemetery, south of Burnside. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may go to Heritage Hospice, Gideon International and Booklink.

Vester Johnson

Vester Johnson, 77, of North Street, died Friday at the Danville Center for Health and Rehabilitation.

Born Sept. 14, 1923 in Boyle County to the late Wiley and Cleo Johnson, he was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a wife, Jean Johnson of Danville; three sons, George Johnson of Danville, Donald and Ronald Johnson, both of Mt. Hermon, La.; a brother, James E . Johnson of Danville; a sister, Margaret Johnson of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church by Rev. Richard Hill. Burial will be in Camp Nelson Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Smith-Jackson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be James Hamilton, George Walker, Ivory Yocum, Cecil Ford, Jerry Matthew and James Howard Johnson.
