Roda Mae Castle, 78, died Saturday, October 23, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Castle was born May 12, 1921, in Johnson County, to the late Harry and Cora Salyer Blanton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Castle, in 1969.
Survivors include three sons; seven daughters; three sisters; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Burial was in East Ashland Golden Oaks Memorial Park Gardens.

Edna McKenzie
1918-1999
Edna L. McKenzie, 81, of Volga, died Saturday, October 23, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville.
Mrs. McKenzie was born February 18, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late Lonzo and Vertrice Williams Reed. She was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Schuyler McKenzie, and one son, Harper McKenzie.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda S. Ison and Rose Ann Rowland; three brothers; one sister; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Elizabeth Chandler
1909-1999
Lowmansville resident Elizabeth Hayes Chandler, 90, died Monday, October 25, at her residence.
Mrs. Chandler was born July 8, 1909, in Lawrence County, to the late Greenville and Nancy Carter Hayes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Chandler, on June 30, 1996.
Survivors include one son, Herman Chandler; one daughter, Betty Lou Castle; one sister, Verlie Hayes; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Lyons-Chandler Cemetery at Lowmansville.

Mollie Roy
1911-1999
Mollie Mae Roy, 88, died October 26 at Salyersville Health Care Center.
Mrs. Roy was born May 3, 1911, in Lawrence County, to the late Allen and Azobie Pratt Boyd.
Surviving are her husband, G.P. Roy; one stepson, Dennis Roy; one stepdaughter, Carmen Roy; and three step-grandchildren.
Burial was in Boyd Cemetery at Louisa.

Elmer Dutton
1927-1999
Former Johnson County resident, Elmer Dutton, 72, died Saturday, October 23, at his Tremont City, Ohio, residence.
Mr. Dutton was born May 14, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late John and Nelvie Pack Dutton. He was a construction worker.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Lynn Fannon.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Blanton Dutton; one granddaughter and her husband, Sarah and Doug Fields; a son-in-law, Homer Fannon; two great-granddaughters; two brothers, George Dutton of White Salmon, Washington, and John Dutton of River; and two sisters, Gracie Preston of Clay City and Eula Fay Blevins of St. Paris, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 26, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with John R. Pelphrey officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Verna Jenkins
1927-1999
Verna LeMaster Jenkins, 71, died Thursday, October 28, at her Columbus, Ohio, residence.
Mrs. Jenkins was born October 31, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late John and Pheoba Moore LeMaster. She was a retired laundress.
Surviving are her husband, Buell Jenkins; two sons, Bill H. and Donald R. Jenkins, both of Columbus; four daughters, Minnie Jewel Sly, Joyce Ann Jackson, Carol Heckman and Brenda K. Jenkins, all of Columbus; two sisters, Mary Jenkins of Flat Gap and Dove Kimbleton of Columbus; and 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 1, at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, Columbus, with Elders Frankie Williams and Sammie Reed officiating.
Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus.

Cecil Meek
1911-1999
Meally resident Cecil Meek, 88, died Sunday, October 31, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Meek was born August 12, 1911, in Johnson County, to the late Jack and Janett Ward Meek. He was an electrician and veteran of World War II.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minerva Irene Picklesimer Meek, in October 1995.
Surviving are one brother, Clarence Meek of Boons Camp; and one sister, Exer Price of Chardon, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 2, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Jerry Scott officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Walter Ross Jr.
1921-1999
Retired engineer Walter A. Ross Jr., 78, died Thursday, October 28, at his Flat Gap residence.
Mr. Ross was born September 15, 1921, in Johnson County, to the late Walter A. Sr. and Etta Marie Lyon Ross. He was retired from General Motors of Columbus, Ohio and was a World War II Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Malta Crislip Ross; three sons, Danny A. Ross of Lapel, Indiana, Rodney F. Ross Sr. of Galloway, Ohio, and John K. Ross of Millersport, Ohio; three brothers, Marshall Ross of Corning, Ohio, Edgel Ross of Flat Gap and Garland Ross of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Carrie Davis of Lima, Ohio; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 31, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with John Estep, Harold Salyer and Dick VanHoose officiating.
Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Arnold Burns
Arnold "Arnie" Burns of Sandusky, Ohio, died Wednesday, October 20, at Providence Hospital.
Mr. Burns was retired from Ohio Edison after 35 year of employment. He was a member of Harvest Temple, where he was also the Children's Church director.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn J. Burns; five daughters, Jacqlyn Marie Stike of Columbia, North Carolina, Rhonda Carole Weyer of Castalia, Ohio, Carol Jo Wamsley of Middletown, Ohio, Kellie Kathleen Anthony of Columbus, Ohio, and M. Jeannie Greer of Paintsville; and 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pastor James Lewis of Harvest Temple officiated the services.
Burial was in Castalia Cemetery.

Thomas Pelphrey
1930-1999
Thomas Eugene Pelphrey, 69, of Oregon, Ohio, formerly of Johnson County, died Saturday, October 24, at his residence.
Mr. Pelphrey was born January 25, 1930, in Paintsville, to the late Arthur and Nannie Pelphrey. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and served 30 years on active duty, which included the Korean and Vietnam wars. In Vietnam he earned his nickname "Hawk." After working for BP for 25 years, he retired in 1999.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Curtis and Glen Arthur; and a sister, Mary Mae.
Surviving are his wife, Despina "Daisy" Pelphrey; two aunts and a uncle, Louie Faye Dills, Betty Jean McCarty and Junior Combs, all of Paintsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 27, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He received full military honors.
Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park, with Hoeflinger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Beulah Pennington
1908-1999
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, November 3, for Beulah Jenkins Pennington, 91, who died Saturday, October 30, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Pennington was born September 22, 1908, to the late Columbus and Nancy Patrick Jenkins.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray Pennington, on May 2, 1997.
Surviving are four sons, Ronnie and Jack Pennington, both of Flat Gap, Clay Pennington of Martha and Buell Jenkins of Columbus, Ohio; five daughters, Verna Salyers of Galloway, Ohio, Gladys Gillem of Pickerton, Ohio, Sylvia Wright of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Stella Shockley and Esther Pennington, both of Columbus; one brother, Joe Jenkins of West Liberty; and 34 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Burch Wheeler
1919-1999
Burch M. Wheeler, 80, of Croton, Ohio, formerly of Flat Gap, died Monday, November 1, at his residence.
Mr. Wheeler was born March 10, 1919, in Johnson County, to the late Chauncey and Dolly Frazer Wheeler. He was retired from North American Rockwell and Newark Air Force Base and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Oshell Wheeler; one daughter, Carolyn Cline of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; three sons, Johnny of Granville, Ohio, Ron of Mt. Vernon and Windell of Delaware, Ohio; and one sister, Ima Castle of Paintsville; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Paris Music
1915-1999
Paris B. "Buster" Music, 83, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, November 1, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin.
Mr. Music was born December 27, 1915, in Floyd County, to the late Elmer and Amie Hinton Music. He was a retied coal miner and attended Tom Moore Chapel.
Surviving are his wife, Fannie Baldridge Music; two sons, Bill of Auxier and Larry of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Eunice Shepherd and Barbara Gibson, both of Prestonsburg; four brothers, James of Prestonsburg, Franklin of Frankfort and A.G. and Elmer, both of Ypsilanti, Michigan; three sisters, Emogene Pelphrey of Prestonsburg and Roberta Knipp and Lorain Osborne, both of Ypsilanti; and nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Richard Burke
1912-1999
Former Johnson County resident Richard Otto Burke, 87, died Tuesday, November 2, at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, Indiana.
Mr. Burke was born September 15, 1912, in Johnson County, to the late Grant and Adaline Cliffton Burke. He was a coal miner for 19 years.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter; one grandson; five brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Burke; one son, Harold Burke of Wabash; three daughters, Billie Sue Samons of Van Lear, Charlotte Howard of Wabash and Kathy Arlene Houghland of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Robert Burke of Van Lear; and seven grandchildren.
