Retired carpenter Carmon Brooks, 81, died Tuesday, March 28, at Salyersville Health Care Center.
Mr. Brooks was born May 26, 1918, in Johnson County, to the late Arlando and Virgie Castle Brooks. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Mae Spradlin Brooks; one daughter, Marsha Nichols of Virginia; one brother, William Brooks of Tahoe, Indiana; two sisters, Alma Brooks and Alpha Meeks, both of Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Jake William Cole
2000-2000
Jake William Cole, infant son of Bruce Jr. and Kathryn Cole, of Houston, Texas, died Wednesday, March 22.
Jake was born March 7.
Surviving are his parents; grandparents, Frank and Victoria Pennington, Bruce Cole and Rita Fontana; and great-grandparents, Lou Cina Pennington (a former Flat Gap resident), Joe Cole and Margarite Wern.

Jared Michael Cole

Jared Michael Cole, infant son of Bruce Jr. and Kathryn Cole of Houston, Texas, died Friday, March 24.
Jared was born March 7.
Surviving are his parents; grandparents, Frank and Victoria Pennington, Bruce Cole and Rita Fontana; and great-grandparents, Lou Cina Pennington (a former Flat Gap resident), Joe Cole and Margarite Wern.

Eva McKenzie
1909-2000
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 26, for Eva Bailey McKenzie, 90, who died Thursday, March 23, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. McKenzie was born April 6, 1909, in Johnson County, to the late Randall and Ollie Lyon Bailey. She was a teacher.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bert McKenzie, on March 7, 1976; and two sons, Elmo and Elmond McKenzie.
Surviving are one son, Dan McKenzie of Flat Gap; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alka Grim
1906-2000
Alka Grim, 93, died Saturday, March 18, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Grim was born October 27, 1906, in Johnson County, to the late W.L. and Lizzie Brooks Daniels. She was a retired cook.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Grim, in 1973.
Surviving are four sons, William Doyle Grim of Oil Springs, Charles Grim of Van Lear, and Homer and Donald Grim, both of Flemingsburg; four daughters, Ruth Arms and Maudie Lazar, both of Thealka, Opal Ransbury of Flemingsburg and Faye Robinson of Alabama; three sisters, Lucy Castle of River, Edith Walters of Paintsville and Ruby King of Columbus, Ohio; and 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Goldia Caudill
1923-2000
Goldia (Lena) Caudill, 76, of Silver Lake, Indiana, died Wednesday, March 22, at Summers County Hospital, Hinton, West Virginia.
Mrs. Caudill was born April 6, 1923, at Riceville, to the late Archie M. and Mary E. Hackworth Caudill. She was co-owner of Manchester Lanes for 18 years.
Surviving are her husband, William (Jack) Caudill; two sons, David E. Caudill of Silver Lake and Jack Caudill of Burket, Indiana; two daughters, Linda S. Butler of Hartsel, Colorado, and Sharon Caudill of Buckhead, Georgia; three brothers, Chester Caudill of Claypool, Indiana, Hershel Caudill of Pierceton, Indiana, and Archie Jr. Caudill of Silver Lake; one sister, Veta Holle of North Manchester, Indiana; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Alma Hamilton
1924-2000
Alma Geraldine "Jerry" Hamilton, 75, died Monday, March 20, at Community Health Partners Hospital, Vermillion, Ohio.
Mrs. Hamilton was born April 13, 1924, at Tram, to the late Leonard and Loula Caldwell Layne. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Halleck Hamilton; and a sister, Myrtle Edna Layne.
Surviving are one daughter Lucille Erwin of Vermillion; three brothers, Edward Layne of Harold, Wilber Layne of Ivel and Ellis Layne of Ragland, Virginia; three sisters, Dolly Mae Butler of Hager Hill, Virginia Whitten of Paintsville and Stella Marie Adkins of Richmond; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ella Preston
1903-2000
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, March 24, for Ella Reed Preston, 96, of Auxier, who died Tuesday, March 21, at Riverview Health Care Center, Prestonsburg.
Mrs. Preston was born April 28, 1903, in Johnson County, to the late Will and Louella Ward Reed. She was a teacher.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Preston, in 1990; one son, Clarence Preston Jr.; and a daughter, Murvil Preston.
Surviving are one daughter, Audrey Hall of Auxier; and one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Destiny Sherman
2000-2000
Destiny Ariel LeSeay Sherman, infant daughter of Jerry and Jamie Laney Sherman, died Friday, March 17, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Destiny was born March 17.
Surviving are her parents; two sisters, Kaitlyn Daniels and Cheyenne Sherman; maternal grandparents, James Miller and Thelma Miller of Paintsville; and paternal grandparents, Edgar and Clovis Sherman.

Esther Andrews
1916-2000
Volga resident Esther W. Andrews, 83, died Wednesday, March 15, at her residence.
Mrs. Andrews was born December 1, 1916, in Michigan, to the late Carl and Francis Weaver Heinze.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Andrews; and two sons, Jim Andrews, in 1986; and Harold Andrews Jr., in 1998.
Surviving are one brother, Al Heinze of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Lucille Faron of West Palm Beach, Florida; and 16 grandchildren.

Robert Stapleton
1932-2000
Former Johnson County resident Robert L. Stapleton, 67, of Enon, Ohio, died Monday, March 20, at his residence.
Mr. Stapleton was born March 30, 1932, at Oil Springs, to the late Lunda and Dortha Webb Stapleton. He was retired from Cooper Industries Inc. after 20 years of service and was a 35-year member of the Enon-Mad River Township Fire Department, currently serving as assistant chief. He was a member of the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly A. Hoskinson Stapleton; and two sisters, Nae Marsh of Ashland and Evelene McCarty of Oil Springs.

William Castle
1961-2000
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for William Franklin Castle, 38, of Hager Hill, who died Monday, March 13, at UK Medical Center.
Mr. Castle was born November 8, 1961, in Johnson County, to Ernest Buell "Cracker Bill" and Iva Jean Arms Castle. He was a pizza deliverer.
Surviving are his parents; his wife, Sharon Damron Castle; one son, William Matthew Castle of Hager Hill; one daughter, Samantha Danielle Castle of Hager Hill; five brothers, Leroy Salyers, Ralph Castle and Randy Allen Castle, all of Thealka, Dave Castle of Hager Hill, and Glenn Richard Castle of Martin County; and four sisters, Edith Marie Jackson of Thealka, Kathy Wheeler and Trish Reeves, both of Flemingsburg, and Wanda Louise Tackett of Wheelwright.

Ruth Robinson

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 16, for Ruth Hatfield Robinson, 69, of Paintsville, who died Tuesday, March 14, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Robinson was born December 13, 1930, in Pike County, to the late Basil and Elizabeth Smith Hatfield.
Surviving are her husband, John Cecil Robinson; three sons, Ronnie D. Robinson of Hager Hill, Larry G. Robinson of Paintsville and Bill M. Robinson of West Van Lear; one daughter, Patty Robinson Barker of West Van Lear; five brothers, Ralph Hatfield of Whitesburg, Fred, Cecil and Eugene Hatfield, all of Belfry, and Grover C. Hatfield of Raceland; three sisters, Pauline Layne and Glendene Bell, both of Belfry, and Opal Bailey of Matewan, West Virginia; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bobby Castle
1928-2000
Thealka resident Bobby Castle, 71, died Monday, March 13, at his residence.
Mr. Castle was born September 20, 1928, in Floyd County, to the late Ervin H. and Betty Bradley Castle. He was a coalminer and member of Paintsville Oddfellows Lodge #288 and the Paintsville Rebekkah Lodge #116.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Castle of Thealka; three daughters, Wilma Story and Thelma Castle, both of Thealka, and Tammie Pelphrey of Stambaugh; four brothers, Verlin and Virgil Castle, both of Thealka, Charles Castle of Charleston, South Carolina, and Green Castle of Winter Haven, Florida; one sister, Fannie White of Winter Haven; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Maudie Elam
1911-2000
Maudie Elam, 88, of Springfield, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 7, Urbana, Ohio.
Mrs. Elam was born May 27, 1911, in Floyd County, to the late Zacharias and Zilphia Spears Standford. She attended a Pentecostal Church of Christ.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Elam, in 1977; five brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving are five sons, James and Bill Elam, both of Paintsville, Russell Jr. and Donald Elam, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and George Elam of Springfield, Ohio; four daughters, Sharon Smith of Lovely, Della Grim of Urbana, Delores Butcher of Milford, Michigan, and Mary Blair of Bradenton, Florida; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Kyle Williams
1963-2000
Former Johnson County resident Kyle Williams, 36, died Monday, March 13, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville.
Mr. Williams was born May 5, 1963, in Johnson County. He was vice president of Human Resources for the Raintree Group of Lexington.
Surviving are his mother, Elsie Grim Williams of Wittensville; his father, Everett Williams of Florida; and one brother, Mike Williams of Wittensville.

Steve Myers
1944-2000
Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Steve Myers, 55, of Paintsville, who died Monday, March 6, at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
Mr. Myers was born June 23, 1944.

Terie Nelson
1905-2000
Retired cook Terie Nelson, 94, died Saturday, March 11, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Nelson was born August 1, 1905, in Johnson County, to the late Harrison and Lottie Clay Blair. She was retired from Mayo State Vocational School and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Nelson, on March 31, 1932.
Surviving are one daughter, Betsy Jo VanHoose of Paintsville; and two grandchildren.

Lewis Rohr
1949-2000
Ashland resident, Lewis "Jack" Rohr, 50, died Saturday, March 11, at his residence.
Mr. Rohr was born April 27, 1949, in Knox, Indiana, to Mable Whitaker Rohr and the late Charles Rohr. He was a graphic arts teacher with the Summitt Federal Correction Facility and Master Mason of the Rush Fork Masonic Lodge 715.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Rohr; his mother; one son, Jason Rohr of Lexington; one stepson, Keith Lambert of Huntington, West Virginia; one daughter, Robin Rohr Archibald of Phoenix, Arizona; one stepdaughter, Jessica Lambert of Ashland; and one sister, Kay Rohr Murphy of Paintsville.

Roy Boyd
1952-2000
Former Johnson County resident Roy "Hillbilly" Boyd, 47, of Springfield, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 7.
Mr. Boyd was born August 19, 1952, in Paintsville, to Homer and Elsie Ward Boyd. He was a United States Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Gary Boyd.
Surviving are his mother; one son, David Dever of Springfield; three brothers, Butch Boyd and Anthony Jackson, both of Springfield, and Paul Jackson of Enon, Ohio; and one sister, Elaine Null of Springfield.
