Dorothy Slone

Preston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Dorothy Slone, 83, who died Thursday, February 15, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Slone was born November 23, 1917, in Johnson County, to the late Harry and Nora Mayhan Stambaugh. She was a member of the Sitka Church of Christ.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Slone, on June 26, 1987.
Surviving are one son, Clarence Walter Slone of Sitka; two daughters, Deborah Preston of Paintsville and Judith Lynn Preston of Salem, Illinois; two sisters, June Salyer of Ashland and Irene Horne of Springfield, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Venny VanHoose and Chuck Slone officiating.
Burial will follow in Slone Cemetery at Paintsville.

Judy Wallen
1947-2001
Thealka resident Judy Wallen, 53, died Thursday, February 8, at her residence.
Mrs. Wallen was born March 26, 1947, in Floyd County, to Luther Clouse and the late Anna Lee Daniels Clouse.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Wallen, on July 13, 1987.
Surviving are one son, Alfard Wallen of Thealka; her father; four brothers, Gordon and Clayton Clouse, both of Paintsville, Cordell Clouse of Oil Springs and Danny Clouse of Thealka; and four sisters, Phyllis Mitchell of Martin and Glendora VanHoose, Diane Clouse and Janet Clouse, all of Thealka.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Williams officiating.
Burial followed in Daniels Family Cemetery at Thelma.

Mabel Skaggs
1921-2001
Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Mabel Skaggs, 79, who died Saturday, February 10, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Skaggs was born November 21, 1921, in Magoffin County, to the late James and Frona Blanton Conley. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Skaggs, on July 2, 2000.
Surviving are one son, Stanley Skaggs; six daughters, Judy Salyer of Wittensville, Denise Sparks of Lowmansville, and Darcie Rogers, Debbie Miller, Jewell Blevins and Kathy Ross, all of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Hager Conley of Marion, Ohio; two sisters, Katherine Barnett of Salyersville and Kay Howard of Ohio; and 26 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church, with Terry Conley and Ellis Hamilton officiating.
Burial followed in Skaggs-Young Cemetery at Lowmansville.

Douglas Daniels
1945-2001
Funeral services were held Monday, February 12, for Douglas Ray Daniels, 55, who died Friday at VA Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Mr. Daniels was born December 18, 1945, in Paintsville, to the late Enich Robinson and Florine Daniels. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Jean Perkins Daniels; two sons, Jerry Douglas Daniels of Paintsville and John Douglas Daniels of Spokane, Washington; two daughters, Brenda Lavone of Spokane, and Teresa Marie Daniels of Japan; one brother, Rick Hughes of Paintsville; five sisters, Betty Keel and Izora Ruth Hill, both of Van Lear, Cathy Ward and Deidra Hughes, both of Elkhorn City, and Patricia Gay Justice of Pikeville; and four grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Roger VanHoose.
Burial followed in Community Cemetery at Salyersville.

Joseph Grim
1976-2001
Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Joseph Emery “Joey” Grim, 24, who died Friday, February 9.
Mr. Grim was born August 1, 1976, in Prestonsburg, to Darley Emery Grim and Lathania Faye Rice. He was a carpenter.
Surviving are his mother, Lathania Faye Dorton of Thealka; one brother, Keith Rice of Thealka; three sisters, Tina Grim of Flat Gap and Melissa Grim and Samantha Grim, both of Wittensville; and his paternal grandfather, Paul Cecil Grim.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim McKenzie officiating.
Burial followed in Grim Family Cemetery at Flat Gap.

James Taylor
1935-2001
Retired miner James Harmon Taylor, 65, died Wednesday, February 7, at Central Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Taylor was born December 8, 1935, in Paintsville, to Faye Hannah Taylor and the late Virgil Taylor.
Surviving are his mother; one son, Brian Taylor of Leander; four daughters, Joey Burke, Tammy Jean Conley and Melanie Slone, all of Leander, and Patsy Renee Jackson of Salyersville; three brothers, Leondis Taylor of Boons Camp and Benny and Bill Taylor, both of Leander; two sisters, Maxie Blair of Leander and Cheryl Faye Sammons of Stone; and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday at First Freewill Baptist Church, with Larry Blair and Toby Johnson officiating.
Burial followed in the family cemetery at Leander, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Homer Collins
1914-2001
Homer Collins, 86, died Thursday, February 8, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Collins was born October 4, 1914, in Johnson County, to the late Bailey & Margaret Louise Wells Collins. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Surviving are four sons, Jimmy Collins of Paintsville, Jerry Collins of Lakeview, Oregon, Wayne Collins of Lillian, Texas, and Dan Collins of Morehead; two daughters, Jane Perky of Royal Oak, Michigan, and Telie Ellis of Wilmington, North Carolina; and 21 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Preston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sandra Castle
1977-2001
Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Hager Hill was in charge of arrangements for Sandra Castle, 23, who died Friday, February 9.
Mrs. Castle was born October 14, 1977, in Lexington, to Darrell Flinchum and Brenda Boyer.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Castle; two daughters, Emily Daniels of Martin County and Andrea Brown of Riceville; mother, Brenda Boyer of Bremen, Indiana; father and stepmother, Darrell and Vicky Flinchum of Swamp Branch; three brothers, Derick and Deron Flinchum, both of Swamp Branch, and Joey Shepherd of Bremen; and two sisters, Trish Spencer and Lisa Fisher, both of Bremen.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Phelps & Son Funeral Home, with Kelly Flinchum officiating.
Burial followed in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Alta Blair
1923-2001
Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Alta Powers Blair, 77, who died Thursday, February 8, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Blair was born July 11, 1923, in Johnson County, to the late Braden and Nannie Spencer Powers.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Blair, on April 20, 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Dean and Wilbur Blair, both of Leander; one half sister, Glenna Doris Turpin of Paintsville; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Revs. Ray Church and Willie Goble officiating.
Burial followed in Cecil Blair Memorial Cemetery at Leander.

Marshall Fraley
1954-2001
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, for Marshall Ray Fraley, 47, who died Sunday, February 11, at his Hager Hill residence.
Mr. Fraley was born January 17, 1954, in Johnson County, to Thomas J. and Okie Daniels Fraley. He was disabled.
Surviving are his mother; two sons, Travis of Tutor Key and Frank of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Charity R. Donnelly of Paintsville and Mya R. Fraley of Tutor Key; three brothers, Thomas of East Point, Ronald of Van Lear and William of West Van Lear; two sisters, Ruth Butcher and Alpharetta Sue Francis, both of Van Lear; one grandchild; and a companion, Ruby Shepard.
Officiating at 11 a.m. services at Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Hager Hill will be Frank Osborne.
Burial will follow in Friendship Memorial Gardens at Williams-port.

Anna Lee Meade
1921-2001
Funeral services will be held today, Friday, for Anna Lee Meade, 79, who died Tuesday, February 6, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Meade was born November 3, 1921, in Johnson County, to the late Patrick Wood and Ruie Wheeler Ramsey. She was a bookkeeper at Farmer’s Supply Store.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Frankie Meek.
Surviving are her husband, Douglas C. Meade; one son, Chad Meade of Paintsville; one daughter, Diana Stokey of Knoxville, Tennessee; two brothers, John and Joe Ramsey, both of Whitesburg; one sister, Jean Erwin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Officiating at 1 p.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel is Bruce Nettleton.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Charles Hanshaw
1929-2001
Van Lear resident Charles Edward Hanshaw, 71, died Monday, February 5, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hanshaw was born October 11, 1929, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Josephine Miller Hanshaw. He was retired from Huron Camera of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife, Audrey Mollette Hanshaw; one brother, Carl Hanshaw of Lancaster; and one sister, Dorothy Devrees of Lancaster.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Jerry Scott officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

William Dutton Jr.
1905-2001
Retired miner William “Bill” Dutton Jr., 95, died Friday, February 2, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, West Virginia.
Mr. Dutton was born March 26, 1905, in Johnson County, to the late William and Julie Castle Dutton.
Surviving are his wife, Gypsie M. Crum Dutton; three sons, Panzel L. Dutton of Xenia, Ohio, Donald Dutton of Kokoma, Indiana, and Raymond G. Dutton of Miamisburg, Ohio; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Little Friendship United Baptist Church, with Jake Crum, Claude Mollette, Glen Penix and Shade Walters officiating.
Burial followed in the family cemetery at Boons Camp, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Wikoff
Barbara Ann Wikoff, 39, of Gulfport, Mississippi, died Sunday, February 4, in Gulfport.
Mrs. Wikoff worked in the Photo Lab of the Gulfport Wal-Mart Super Center and was an active member of Michael Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Ernest Furlow; and grandparents, Robert and Earlean Shuler and William Furlow.
Surviving are her husband, Roy Wikoff; three daughters, Amy Wikoff of Paintsville, Ashley Nichole Beck of Jackson, Mississippi, and Jada Wikoff of Gulfport; her mother and step-father, Peggy and Travis Fitts Sr. of Kosciusko, Mississippi; four brothers, Austin Furlow of Jackson, Frank Furlow of Henderson, North Carolina, Travis Fitts Jr. of Jackson and Doug Fitts of Kosciusko; one sister, Lea Nunnery of Greenville, Mississippi; and grandparents, Milton and Ethel Freeman of Jackson.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. at Michael Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport.
A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at Attala Memorial Gardens in Kosciusko.

Bueford Rowland
1943-2001
Former Johnson County resident Bueford MacHurst Rowland, 58, died Saturday, March 31, at Grand Oaks Nursing Center, Baldwin, Michigan.
Mr. Rowland was born March 30, 1943, at Red Bush, to Virginia Wood Rowland and the late Eckell Rowland. He was an assembly technician.
Surviving are his wife, Donna Rowland; his mother; one son, Rick Rowland of Indiana; one daughter Pamela Bruno of Taylor, Michigan; three brothers, Sammie Rowland of Red Bush, and Wendell and Michael Rowland, both of Detroit, Michigan; two sisters, Zezalee Keaton of Charlie and Mary McCoy of Louisville; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Kenny Pelphrey officiating.
Burial followed in Salyers Cemetery at Red Bush.
