Born November 15, 1938, at Vanceburg, she was a daughter of the late Adolphus and Cynthia Canell Applegate, and was the wife of Donald Gottfried. She was a homemaker and a member of Mosby Community Church. Services were conducted Tuesday, November 23, at 1:00 p.m., at Mosby Community Church. Pastor Dallas Rickett and Bro. Tony Corns officiated with burial in Mosby Cemetery at Straight Fork. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Walter E. "Butch" Gwinn, 48, of South Portsmouth, died Friday, November 12, 2004, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland. Born November 5, 1956, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was a son of Louise Blankenship Gwinn of South Portsmouth and the late James E. Gwinn, and was the husband of 27 years of Talena Evans Gwinn. He was an operator for OSCO Industries of Portsmouth. Services were conducted Monday, November 15, at 3:00 p.m. at Little White Oak Chapel in South Portsmouth. Rev. Paul Pennington and Rev. Rodney Evans officiated with burial in Blankenship Family Cemetery in South Portsmouth. Arrangements were under the direction of Roberson Funeral home in South Shore.

Mary McCleese
Mary L. Skaggs McCleese, 80, of Sandusky, Ohio, died Friday, November 12, 2004, at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Born September 1, 1924, at Garrison, she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Elizabeth Skaggs, and was the widow of William H. McCleese. She was employed by the former Barr Rubber Plant from 1943 until her retirement in the late 1980s, and was a member of Tower Baptist Church in Lorain, Ohio. Services were conducted Monday, November 15, at 11:00 a.m., at Groff Funeral Home in Sandusky. Rev. Terry Brooks officiated with burial in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron, Ohio.

Lillian Banfield
Lillian Banfield, 81, of Vanceburg, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center, following an extended illness. Born May 29, 1923, in Fleming County, she was a daughter of the late Boon and Lucy Morrison Banfield. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 26, at Lewis County Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Nelson Evans officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Ola Burriss
Ola Fultz Burriss, 96, of Vanceburg, died Monday, February 28, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center. Born October 24, 1908, at Black Oak, she was a daughter of the late Charles K. and Marian Calvin Burriss, and was the widow of George W. "Bud" Burris, who died in 1967. She was a life-long member of Black Oak Christian Church, and was former secretary of the Loyal Women's Club for many years at the church. She also wrote the Black Oak News column for the Lewis County Herald for more than 57 years. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Nelson Evans officiated with burial in Black Oak Cemetery.

Ruby Hobbs
Ruby Lee Hobbs, 79, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. Born June 4, 1925, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Nellie Carver Riley, and was the wife of 62 years of George Hobbs. She was retired after 35 years with US Shoe and was a member of Christian Baptist Church. Services weree held at the family's convenience. Arrangements were under the direction of Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Mrs. Bruce King Beckett Hord, 83, of Vanceburg, formerly of Tollesboro, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. Born February 10. 1922, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Adolphus and Mary Armilda Roberts Beckett, and was the widow of Willard Hord. She was a farmer, homemaker and a member of Tollesboro Christian Church. Services were conducted Monday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m., at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Bro. Kelley Bierley officiated with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Mary Rose Applegate, 82, of Tollesboro, died Saturday, February 19, 2005, at her home. Born August 9, 1922, in Lewis County, she was the daughter of the late Davis and Margaret Hord, and was the widow of Joseph O. Applegate, who died March 4, 1999. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Flemingsburg. Services were conducted Tuesday, February 22, at St. Charles Catholic Church. Rev. Verne F. Hogan officiated with burial in Maysville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Boone-Nickell Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Belva Bradley
Belva Ruggles Bradley, 89, of Firebrick, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born November 28, 1915, in Greenup County, she was a daughter of the late Evertt and Bertie Maples Ruggles, and was the widow of Carl M. Bradley. She was a homemaker and a member of Firebrick Christian Baptist Church. Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2005, at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Rev. Leo "Frank" Conley, 75, of Millbury, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg. Born March 21, 1929, at Vanceburg, he was a son of the late Charles and Laura Skaggs Conley, and was the husband of Geraldine Martin Conley. He was employed as a millwright for Ford Motor Company fore more then 19 years, retiring in 1998. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, March 5, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Walbridge, Ohio. Father Al Ceranowski officiated with burial in Lake Township Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Witzler-Shank Funeral Home in Walbridge.

Eleanor Schiltz
Eleanor Fugate Schiltz, 81, of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. Born October 23, 1923, at Quincy, she was a daughter of the late James and Anna Cell Densmore Fugate. She had worked at Mitchellace and the former Williams Shoe Factory for 54 years. Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 25, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial was in Methodist Cemetery at Quincy.

Born June 23, 1906, in Greenup County, she was a daughter of the late Milford Whitt and Lucinda Elezabeth Cooper Riffe, and was the widow of Manneth Foreman. She was a homemaker and a member of Bivens Chapel Christian Holiness Church. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Rev. Wilma Erwin officiated with burial in Sunset Cemetery at Quincy.

Wornia Chestal Eulett, 79, of Vanceburg, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at his home. Born November 15, 1925, at Vanceburg, he was a son of the late Jacob Eulett and Essie Killen Eulett Howard. He retired in 1995 from Martin Marietta Corporation in Woodville, Ohio, after 15 years of service. Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial was in Horsley Cemetery at Laurel.

Harvey C. Joe Edington, 84, of Vanceburg, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. Born January 28, 1921, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Samuel and Laura Stone Edington, and was the husband of Wanda L. Hughes Edington. He was a self-employed mechanic and a member of Quincy Church of Christ. Services were conducted Monday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m., at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Paul Lawrence Blankenbeckley, 92, of Jefferson, Wisconsin, formerly of Firebrick, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in Juneau, Wisconsin. Born February 11, 1913, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late John H. and Mary Lewis Blankenbeckley, and the husband of Ruth Gillium Blankenbeckley. He was retired from the former Empire Detroit Steel Mill in New Boston, Ohio. He was a member of Firebrick Christian Baptist Church. Services were conducted Sunday, February 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Rev. Raymond Lewis officiated with burial in Collier Memorial Gardens in South Shore.

Dorothy Mae Renchen, 74, of Lincoln Center West Nursing Home in Connersville, Indiana, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Born February 2, 1931, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late James and Della Moore Renchen. She was a 1950 graduate of Tollesboro High School and was retired from General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a member of East Fork Church at Trinity. Services were conducted Saturday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Marshall and Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin, Indiana. Rev. Jim Noggle officiated with burial in West Side Cemetery at Milton, Indiana.

Arthur Hedge
Arthur W. Hedge, 52, of Route 2 Vanceburg, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at his home, following a brief illness. Born October 9, 1952, at Sandy Hook, he was a son of the late Wylie Newton and Verna Faye Justice Hedge, and was the husband of 25 years of Teresa Starling Hedge. He was a machinist for 15 years and was a US Army veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant during the Viet Nam War. He was a graduate of University of Kentucky Ashland College with a bachelor of arts degree. He was a member of VFW Monte Lewis Stamm Post 5438, Vanceburg. There was no visitation or services. Military rites were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 21, at VFW Monte Lewis Stamm Post 5438. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

Arthur Cooper
Arthur Cooper, 82, of Cap Dix, died Tuesday morning, March 29, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center. Born February 19, 1923, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Robert and Laura Compton Cooper, and was the husband of 58 years of Belva Louise Jordan Cooper. He was retired from Westington House Manufacturer in Mansfield, Ohio, and also worked for the Lewis County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He was also a life-long farmer. He was a WWII US Army veteran, serving in the 29th Division in the European Theatre and also landed on Omaha Beach. He received many medals and commendations, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of Blankenship Christian Holiness Church. Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Blankenship Christian Holiness Church. Charlie Riggs and Dean McCleese will officiate with burial in Liles Cemetery on Lower Kinney Road in Lewis County. Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Friday and until the hour of services Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.

George Cobb
George E. Cobb, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Hedlow Center where he had been a patient for two days. Born June 10, 1926, in the Springdale community of Mason County, he was a son of the late Emmet and Marie Royse Cobb. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17, later transferring to the Air Force in 1948 and then in 1952 re-enlisting in the Navy. He retired in 1967 at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served in WWII with the amphibious forces in the Pacific and later served aboard the USS Bennington. In 1954 he was the lone survivor in an on-board explosion in the control room than claimed the lives of more than 100 sailors. He also served on the USS Lake Champlain, USS Saratoga during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the USS Allen M. Sumner during the Santo Domingo Crisis and Vietnam War. After retiring from the military service, he worked in heating and air conditioning maintenance for Gulf Life in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Atlantic Community Church in Jacksonville and was a Kentucky Colonel. Services will be conducted Saturday, April 2, at Bethany Christian Church. Family friend Sam Brevard will officiate with burial in Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro.

Virgil Musser
Virgil Musser, 43, of Grayson, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at his home. Born in Carter County, he was a son of Lena Mae Fultz Musser of Lower Grassy and the late William Voyd Musser, and was the husband of Magie Wilburn Musser. He was a self-employed construction worker. Services were conducted Monday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Bro. Steve Halley officiated with burial in Jamison Cemetery at Garrison.

Eugene Delong
Eugene Curtis Delong, 76, of Burtonville, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg. Born October 28, 1928, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Herschel and Winnie Clary Delong, and was the husband of Ruby Browning Delong. He was a farmer and a US Air Force Korean War veteran. Services were conducted Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Hillary Underwood and Phillip Cropper officiated with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Opal Dummitt
Opal Wolfe Dummitt, 82, of Garrison, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born October 20, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Flora Davis Wolfe, and was the wife of63 years of Wesley Edgar Dummitt. She was a nurses aid at the Monterey Nursing Home in Columbus, Ohio, and a member of the White Oak Apostolic United Pentecostal Church in Greenup. Services were conducted Saturday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m., at Garrison Funeral Chapel. Her children officiated with burial in Dummitt Cemetery in Carter County.

Sara Kennedy
Sara E. Kennedy, 18, daughter of Eddie and Norma Proctor Kennedy of Berea, died Wednesday March 23, 2005 at the UK Children's Hospital in Lexington. She was a senior at Berea Community High School where she crowned Homecoming Queen for 2004, was a member of the Student Council, Beta, FCA, FCLA Leadership and Seed club. She had been a member of the band where she played the flute and was a majorette; she was also an award-winning actress in the Drama club. Services were conducted Saturday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Church. Rev. Randy Osborne and Rev. Kent Gilbert officiated with burial in the Berea Cemetery. Born January 9, 1981, in Huntington, West Virginia, he was the son of Diania Belcher of Barboursville and Conard Coovert of Ocala, Florida. Born February 5, 1940, at Charters, he was a son of the late William and Ida Pearl Thomas Carrington. Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Ernest Gilbert
Ernest L. Gilbert, 86, of Vanceburg, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center, following an extended illness. Born August 25, 1918, at Quicks Run, he was a son of the late William and Martha Polley Gilbert, and was the widower of Minnie Fannie Gilbert, who died in 2003. He was a self-employed businessman, along with his late wife, owning and operating Gilbert Grocery Store. He also co-owned and operated Gilbert's Auto Sales for 12 years and was employed at L.V. Marks Shoe Company in Vanceburg. He was also a Vanceburg city councilman and a member of Vanceburg Christian Baptist Church. Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Bro. James Benner will officiate with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and from 8:00 a.m. until the hour of services Sunday at the funeral home.

Erdena Belle Wills Hester, 78, of Vanceburg, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center following an extended illness. Born July 14, 1926, at Trinity, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Grace Truesdell Wills, and the wife of 58 years of Douglas H. Hester. She was employed by US Shoe Corporation in Vanceburg for 33 years and was a member of Heselton Baptist Church. Services were conducted Thursday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m., at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Dr. Howard Wilson officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
