Harold Griffith, 63, of Ashland, Ohio, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 1,2005, at his home. Born in Lewis County in 1941, he was a son of the late Oscar and Edna Tirey Griffith. He had worked at Ohio Brass until the plant shut down and then was employed at Hedstrom in Ashland. He was a member of Amvets Post 25 and Moose Lodge in Mansfield, Ohio. Services were conducted Friday, March 11, at 1:00 p.m. at the downtown chapel of Werner Funeral Services in Mansfield. Pastor Walter Norris officiated with burial in Mansfield Cemetery.

Arthur Cooper
Arthur Cooper, 82, of Cap Dix, died Tuesday morning, March 29, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center. Born February 19, 1923, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Robert and Laura Compton Cooper, and was the husband of 58 years of Belva Louise Jordan Cooper. He was retired from Westington House Manufacturer in Mansfield, Ohio, and also worked for the Lewis County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He was also a life-long farmer. He was a WWII US Army veteran, serving in the 29th Division in the European Theatre and also landed on Omaha Beach. He received many medals and commendations, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of Blankenship Christian Holiness Church. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Blankenship Christian Holiness Church. Charlie Riggs and Dean McCleese officiated with burial in Liles Cemetery on Lower Kinney Road in Lewis County. Arrangements were under the direction of Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.

George Cobb
George E. Cobb, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Hedlow Center where he had been a patient for two days. Born June 10, 1926, in the Springdale community of Mason County, he was a son of the late Emmet and Marie Royse Cobb. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17, later transferring to the Air Force in 1948 and then in 1952 re-enlisting in the Navy. He retired in 1967 at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served in WWII with the amphibious forces in the Pacific and later served aboard the USS Bennington. In 1954 he was the lone survivor in an on-board explosion in the control room than claimed the lives of more than 100 sailors. He also served on the USS Lake Champlain, USS Saratoga during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the USS Allen M. Sumner during the Santo Domingo Crisis and Vietnam War. After retiring from the military service, he worked in heating and air conditioning maintenance for Gulf Life in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Atlantic Community Church in Jacksonville and was a Kentucky Colonel. Services were conducted Saturday, April 2, at Bethany Christian Church. Family friend Sam Brevard officiated with burial in Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro.

Virgil Musser
Virgil Musser, 43, of Grayson, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at his home. Born in Carter County, he was a son of Lena Mae Fultz Musser of Lower Grassy and the late William Voyd Musser, and was the husband of Magie Wilburn Musser. He was a self-employed construction worker. Services were conducted Monday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Bro. Steve Halley officiated with burial in Jamison Cemetery at Garrison.

Eugene Delong
Eugene Curtis Delong, 76, of Burtonville, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg. Born October 28, 1928, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Herschel and Winnie Clary Delong, and was the husband of Ruby Browning Delong. He was a farmer and a US Air Force Korean War veteran. Services were conducted Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Hillary Underwood and Phillip Cropper officiated with burial in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Opal Dummitt
Opal Wolfe Dummitt, 82, of Garrison, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born October 20, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Flora Davis Wolfe, and was the wife of63 years of Wesley Edgar Dummitt. She was a nurses aid at the Monterey Nursing Home in Columbus, Ohio, and a member of the White Oak Apostolic United Pentecostal Church in Greenup. Services were conducted Saturday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m., at Garrison Funeral Chapel. Her children officiated with burial in Dummitt Cemetery in Carter County.

Sara Kennedy
Sara E. Kennedy, 18, daughter of Eddie and Norma Proctor Kennedy of Berea, died Wednesday March 23, 2005 at the UK Children's Hospital in Lexington. She was a senior at Berea Community High School where she crowned Homecoming Queen for 2004, was a member of the Student Council, Beta, FCA, FCLA Leadership and Seed club. She had been a member of the band where she played the flute and was a majorette; she was also an award-winning actress in the Drama club. Services were conducted Saturday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Church. Rev. Randy Osborne and Rev. Kent Gilbert officiated with burial in the Berea Cemetery. Kenneth Don Coovert, 24, of Barboursville, West Virginia, died Monday morning, March 21, 2005, in Lewis County as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident. Born January 9, 1981, in Huntington, West Virginia, he was the son of Diania Belcher of Barboursville and Conard Coovert of Ocala, Florida. He was a graduate of Cabell Midland High School and was an employee of Brand Scaffolding. Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel in Barboursville. The Rev. Bobby G. Belcher officiated with burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Raymond Rayburn
Raymond Rayburn, 89, of Lewis County, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born June 8, 1915, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Robert and Lula Elam Rayburn, and was the husband of 67 years of Opal Hilderbrand Rayburn. He was retired from the General Refractories Brickyard, was a lifelong farmer and attended Globe Christian Church in Olive Hill. Services will be conducted Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Globe Christian Church. Gary Waugh and grandson David Rayburn will officiate with burial in the Rayburn Community Cemetery on Flat Fork Road. Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Monday and until the hour of services Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.

Elmer Lewis, 85, of Farmers, formerly of Elliott County, died Tuesday evening, March 22, 2005, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born June 28, 1919, in Elliott County, he was a son of the late Issac and Julie Barker Lewis, and was the widower of Lorene Howard Lewis. He was a retired farmer and of the Church of God faith. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Eldridge-Waddell-Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Don Evans and Eugene Haney officiated with burial in Weddington Family Cemetery on Neil Howards Creek in Elliott County.

Jessica Marie McGlone, 27, of Maysville, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born November 30, 1977, at Ironton, Ohio, she was a daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Ferrell Kline of Stout, Ohio, and was the wife of Patrick Delbert McGlone. She was a 1995 graduate of Lewis County High School and was attending Shawnee State University majoring in elementary education. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Ohio. James Carrington, 65, of Vanceburg, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at 8:41 p.m. at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident on the AA Highway Monday morning. Born February 5, 1940, at Charters, he was a son of the late William and Ida Pearl Thomas Carrington. Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Ernest Gilbert
Ernest L. Gilbert, 86, of Vanceburg, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center, following an extended illness. Born August 25, 1918, at Quicks Run, he was a son of the late William and Martha Polley Gilbert, and was the widower of Minnie Fannie Gilbert, who died in 2003. He was a self-employed businessman, along with his late wife, owning and operating Gilbert Grocery Store. He also co-owned and operated Gilbert's Auto Sales for 12 years and was employed at L.V. Marks Shoe Company in Vanceburg. He was also a Vanceburg city councilman and a member of Vanceburg Christian Baptist Church. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Bro. James Benner officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.

Erdena Hester
Erdena Belle Wills Hester, 78, of Vanceburg, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Vanceburg Rehabilitation and Health Center following an extended illness. Born July 14, 1926, at Trinity, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Grace Truesdell Wills, and the wife of 58 years of Douglas H. Hester. She was employed by US Shoe Corporation in Vanceburg for 33 years and was a member of Heselton Baptist Church. Services were conducted Thursday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m., at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Dr. Howard Wilson officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.

Shirley Webb
Shirley Ann Kilgore Webb, 54, of Olive Hill, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born September 1, 1950, in Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Eva Thomas Kilgore, and was the wife of 13 years of Ruben Paul Webb. She was a homemaker and attended Rose Ridge Apostolic Church. Services will be conducted Tuesday, April 5, at 11:00 a.m., at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Darrell Gallihue will officiate with burial in the Kilgore Family Cemetery on Rose Ridge Road in Olive Hill. Mabel Doris Jones Sullivan, 89, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at her home. Born September 23, 1915, at Kinniconick, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Bertha Thomas Jones, and the widow of William D. "Bill" Sullivan. She was self-employed at Block's Rexall Drug Store. She was a member of Vanceburg Christian Church and a charter member of the Lewis County Young Women's Club and Garden Club. Services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, at Vanceburg Christian Church. Duncan Aker and Wilma Erwin officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak. Arrangements were under the direction of Garrison Funeral Chapel.

James Henderson
James Robert Henderson, 81, of Tollesboro, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hurricane, West Virginia. Born May 4, 1924, at Tollesboro, he was a son of the late Asbury and Annie Thomas Henderson, and was the husband of Iris Barbour Henderson. He was retired from Browning Manufacturing in Maysville and was a WWII US Army veteran, participating in three major invasions and also serving as a driver for Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a member of Tollesboro Christian Church. Bro. Wesley Edmonds officiated at graveside services at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, at Hillcrest garden of Memories at Plumville. Arrangements were under the direction of Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro.

Kenneth Applegate
Kenneth Melvin Applegate, 56, of Wallingford, died Sunday, May 15, 2005, at his home. Born September 7, 1948, at Carrs, he was a son of Ancil Applegate of Tollesboro and Thelma Williford Applegate of Florence, and was the husband of 36 years of Nancy Coffenberger Applegate. He was a self-employed over-the-road truck driver and electrician. He was a US Army veteran, serving with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. He was of the Christian faith and a lifetime member VFW Franklin P. Sousley Post 1874 in Flemingsburg. Private services were at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were under the direction of Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.

James D. Hester, 62, of Vanceburg, died Monday May 9, 2005, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. Born March 3, 1943, in Flemingsburg, he was a son of Noel and Anna Mae Gulley Hester of Wallingford, and was the husband of 21 years of Linda Cooper Hester. He was a truck driver for Thomas Lumber Company in Vanceburg, a US army veteran and a member of Petersville Church of God. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Dickerson Funeral home in Vanceburg. Rev. Carl Stanfield and Bro. Arnold Howell officiated with burial in Mt. Tabor Cemetery at Ribolt.

Jessie Belle "Blue" Moore Voiers, 89, of Tollesboro, died Friday, May 6, 2005, at Pioneer Trace Nursing Home. Born June 20, 1915, she was a daughter of the late George E. and Corrine Wilson Moore, and was the wife of Martin L. Voiers. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Orangeburg Christian Church and the church's Christian Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of Orangeburg Homemakers and Lewis County Retired Teachers Association. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 9, at Orangeburg Christian Church. Rev. Phyllis Slagle

Born April 27, 1942, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of Garnett Elliott Holt of Tollesboro and the late Jess Holt, and was the wife of Donald Slagle. She was retired as a cook at Tollesboro Elementary School and was a member of Wallingford Community Church. Born July 12, 1927, in Lewis County, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Rankins, and was the widow of Adrian F. Griffitt. She was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Plains Church. Joseph McCann

Born March 16, 1941, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Jodie and Grace McCail McCann, and was the husband of 38 years of Linda Teegarden McCann. He had been an employee of the Vanceburg Police Department for more than 18 years, a former Lewis County deputy Sheriff for six years, and was a farmer. Born May 11, 1924, in Greenup County, he was a son of the late Fielden C. and Nancy Bentley Madden, and was the widower of Myrtle Madden, who died in 1993. He was a retired farmer and a foster parent for many children. He was a member of Old Regular Baptist Church at South Shore. Services were conducted Sunday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m., at the New Mt. Olive Old Regular Baptist Church. Elders Ira Adkins, Bobby Potter and Willis Travis officiated with burial in Madden Family Cemetery at Garrison. Gary Carroll
Gary Lee Carroll, 67, of Route 3 Vanceburg, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at his home. Born November 13, 1937, at Vanceburg, he was a son of Edith Wilcoxin Carroll of Vanceburg and the late Maurice Carroll, and was the husband of Minnie Lewis Carroll. He had worked for US Shoe for many years as a side laster and for CSX Railroad, and was a member of Vanceburg Church of God. Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Bro. Herman Tolle officiated with burial in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak. Military graveside rites were accorded by VFW Monte Lewis Stamm Post #5438.

William Edsel Clay, 75, of Firebrick, formerly of South Portsmouth, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at his home. Born December 17, 1929, in Lewis County, he was a son of the late Russell and Nannie Barnhart Clay, and was the husband of 16 years of Patty Jones Carpenter Clay. His first wife, Juanita Mae Sexton Clay, died in 1985. He was a graduate of South Portsmouth High School and retired as a driver with Greyhound Bus, after 29-1/2 years of service. He attended Firebrick Christian Baptist Church. Services were conducted Tuesday, May 17, at 11:00 a.m., at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Rev. Raymond Lewis and Rev. Wilford Maddix officiated with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery at South Shore.

Clifton Burnell
Clifton Otha "Fiesty" Burnell, 74, of Big Cabin Creek, died Thursday, August 4, 2005, at his home. Born December 24, 1930, in Avon, Indiana, he was a son of the late Clarence F. and Clovie I. Bristow Burnell. He was a retired brakeman and conductor for Coton Belt Railroad, Florida East Coast Railroad and Cranes Naval Weapons Depot. He was a volunteer firefighter in Arkansas and served in the Korean War, where he received a Bronze Star. He was a member of St. Mary's Lodge 240. Survivors include his wife, Ann Mattingly Burnell, a daughter, Margaret Burnell of Big Cabin Creek; and a son, Dennis Burnell of Tollesboro. Services were conducted Tuesday, August 9, at 1:00 p.m. at Barbour and Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Bro. Ray Ripato officiated with burial in Ebeneezer Cemetery on Big Cabin Creek.
