A native of Woodford County, she was a daughter of the late William Terrill and Carrie Wiley Hurst. She was a member of Broadway Christian Church. Survivors include three brothers, Melvin and Z. B. Hurst, both of Lexington, and James Hurst, Brookport, IL; one sister, Nell Brummette, Lousville, and several relatives in Mercer County. she was preceded in death by a brother, William Hurst. Funeral services were Friday, September 13, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, with Bro. Byron Jessup officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Brummette, Melvin E. Born February 19, 1926, in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Goble and Evelyn Cornelius Weldon. She was a member of Southland Christian Church. Survivors include: her husband, Truly Francis, Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Linda) Hendren; one brother, John C. Weldon, Boyle County; one sister, Mrs. Chester (Betty) Lewis, of Tennessee; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 7, at Pruitt Funeral Home, Lexington, with Rev. Raymond Bishop officiating. Burial was in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Gerald Garlan Vance, 68, of 108 Donna, Gulfport, MS, who was here visiting friends in Harrodsburg, died Friday, September 13, 1996 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born June 10, 1928 in Canvas, WV he was the son of the late Charles Allen and Nora Irene Richmond Vance. He was the former co-owner of the Add-A-Girl-Guy Temporary, Inc., a member of the Revival Tabernacle in Lexington, and had served in the U. S. Army. Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Ann Strange Vance, Gulfport, MS; one son, Jerry R. Vance, Gulfport; one daughter, Paula Jessup, Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Burlan Vance, Gauley Bridge, WV; one sister, Sylvia Hinkle, Rupert, WV; three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, at the Riemann Funeral Home, Gulfport, MS, with burial in Flora Hills Cemetery and Mausoleum. Mr. Norvie Lee White, 96, died Tuesday, September 17, 1996, at the Masonic Home in Shelbyville. Born January 5, ,1900 in Washington County, he was the son of the late William Dudley and Mary Etta Adkinson White. He was a retired Salesman, a member of Masonic Lodge 777, Harrodsburg, Oleika Temple, Lexington, and a member of the First Methodist Church in Lexington. Survivors include; one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Donna Lea) Humston, Lawrenceburg; one sister, Mrs. Elfie Weston, Arkansas City, KS; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Marie Hungate; three sisters, Mrs. Nell Bohe, Mrs. Mary Watts, Mrs. Lillie Walker and one brother, Everette White. Masonic services will be held at the graveside at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 20. Chaplin F. E. Webster will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Gash Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Victor Hellard Jr., 57, of Versailles, died Tuesday, September 17, 1996 at the Woodford Hospital in Versailles. Born in Woodford County, August 16, 1939, he was the son of Leona Tilghman Hellard and the late Victor W. Hellard Sr. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and a veteran of the U. S. Army. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Ellen Carpenter Hellard, Versailles; two brothers, George David Hellard, Versailles and Ronald W. Hellard, Nashville, TN. He was the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carpenter of Burgin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 19, at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. John Kruschwitz and Rev. Mark Caldwell-Reiss officiating. Burial will be in the Versailles Cemetery.

She was a retired supervisor from AT&T, attended Kavanaugh High School and was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include: two nephews, Wilkes Bond Utterback, Harrodsburg and Charles Utterback, Jr., Louisville; three nieces, Mrs. Leroy (Amarylis) Cotton, and Mrs. Tommie Huffman, both of Lawrenceburg and Mrs. Marvin (Virginia) Perry, Mt. He was a retired farmer, mechanic and Lawrenceburg Supply Co. employee and a member of the First Baptist Church and the Birdwhistell Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Kavanaugh High School. Survivors include: his wife, Marjorie Peach Brown; one son, Bob Brown, Lexington; two daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Wilma) Johnson and Audrey Gail Brown, both of Frankfort; two step daughters, Mrs. Elsby (Rosetta) Robinson, Salvisa, Mrs. Edna Elliston, Richmond; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John S. Brown, three sisters, Helen Adams, Ethel Shelton and Doris Petrey and a step daughter, Nita Wise. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 19, at Gash Memorial Chapel by Rev. Jeff Eaton, Rev. Bob C. Jones, and Dr. Robert Jackson. Burial was in Sand Spring Cemetery in Anderson County. She was a homemaker, a member of Salt River Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher, and director of the Women's Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School. Survivors include: a daughter, Marie Followell, Danville; a son, George Lee Jackson, Danville; one sister, Lydia Hill, Danville; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were held Monday, September 30, at Salt River Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Orberson and Rev. Bob Bausum officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery, Danville. Born in Fayette County, January 14, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Charles Martin and Belle Montgomery Shields. She was a member of Palomar Baptist Church, Lexington. Survivors include: two sons, Harold Ray Buffin, Mercer County, Arthur Elwood Buffin, Jessamine, County; three daughters, Reba Aline Young, Lexington, Juanita Darling Kelly, Burgin, and Faye Blanche Covington, Mercer County; one brother, Charles W. Shields, Lexington; 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Marion Kenneth Buffin. Funeral services were held Friday, September 27 at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland by Rev. Lee Caudill with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Lexington. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Survivors include: her husband, Walter Best, Harrodsburg; two half brothers, R. D. and Raymond Bishop, both of Fern Creek; one sister, Ethel Burkhead, Springfield, several nieces and nephews. One brother, Helem Bishop, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be Friday, October 4, at 1:00 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home, with Bro. Paul Readnour officiating. Burial will be in Peters Cemetery, Mackville. Pallbearers will be Roy Burkhead, Bruce Burkhead, Eugene Bishop, Ralph Gary Bishop, Craig Peavler and Mike Bishop. Survivors include: six daughters, Trudy Davis, Silvis, IL, Deloris Pendergraft, Hustonville, Matilda Price, DeQueen, AR, Vivian Spahr, Stanford, Diane cook, Somerset, Diane Cook, Somerset and Sandy Chandler, Fayetteville, NC; two sons, Grover C. Born January 10, 1923 in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late Arbie L. and Cynthia Sparks Gambill. He was a retired meat cutter for Foodtown in Lexington, and had served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Survivors include: his wife, Vivian Slone Gambill of Burgin; two daughters, Cissie (Layne) Tipton of Burgin and Carol (Lindsey) Prebble of Lexington; one son, Donald W. Gambill of Lexington; three sisters, Opal Boggs of Ashland, Ottie Mae Slone of London, and Myrtle Boggs of Pinkerton, OH, and one granddaughter. Mrs. Myrtie Lee Baker Watts, 99, formerly of 205 Park Ave., died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility. Born Dec. 8, 1896 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late James McDaniel and Agnes Toll Baker. She was the widow of Floyd Watts. A graduate of Kavanaugh High School and Eastern Normal College, she was a teacher for many years in Louisville, Harrodsburg and McAfee. She was a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church and Harrodsburg United Methodist Women. Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Charles A. (Anne Baker) Whiting of Lawrenceburg, IN; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and one niece. Funeral services for Mrs. Watts were held at 11 a.m Wedneday, Oct. 9, at the McClellan Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Girard. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Green, Cecil Watts, Wayne Watts, Charles Whiting Jr., James Whiting and Jason Whiting. The family suggests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Lillian Hutchins Parson, 91, formerly of McAfee, died Friday, October 11, 1996 at the Wedgewood Nursing Home in Clarksville, Indiana. Born September 16, 1905 in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late M. G. and Melissa Foley Hutchins and moved to Mercer County in 1937. She taught school in Garrard County for three years and the Mercer County School system in McAfee for four years. She taught English and speech at Mercer County High School for 18 years. She received a Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts and English from the University of Kentucky in 1961, a Masters degree in Communication and Secondary Education from UK in 1964 and Education Science in Curriculum in 1970. She was awarded a graduate scholarship in English from UK in 1965 and in Theater Arts from Eastern Kentucky University in 1968. She was a member of the National Council of Teachers, the Giddings Society of Georgetown College, Mercer County Red Cross Board, and an honorary member of the Mercer County High School FFA Chapter. She established the Speech and Drama program at Mercer County High School and was Chairman of the English Department. She established the Joyce Parsons Scholarship Fund at Georgetown College in memory of her daughter. She was a former member of the Hopewell Baptist Church for over thirty years and was a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. She was the widow of the late Porter F. Parson. Survivors include: one son, Harold D. Parson, Danville; one sister, Daisy Davenport, New Albany, IN; five grandchildren. One son, Kenneth F. Parson. and one daughter, Joyce Lynn Parson, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 13, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Kenneth Preston officiating. Born April 29, 1908 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Silas and Mary Alice Robinson Releford. Mr. Marshall Milton Satterly, 84, of Burgin, died Saturday, November 2, 1996, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born March 24, 1912 in Washington County, he was the son of the late John C. and Laura Coleman Satterly. He was a retired farmer, Burgin Independent School employee, where he had served as custodian and bus driver for ten and one half years. He had also been an employee of Bright's Bottle Gas in Burgin. Born January 5, 1921 in Lancaster, he was a life-long member of the Lancaster Christian Church, where he had served as Elder. He was a veteran of World War II, a charter member and vice-president of the Garrard County Historical Society, a charter member of the Bowman's Station Settlers and Descendants. He organized the Garrard County District I Fire Dept., and served as its first Fire Chief for 10 years, and was the former owner and operator of Bailey Auto Electric Co., Lancaster. Navy, retired postmaster of Burgin, and served with the U. S. Postal Service for 35 years. Mrs. Grace N. Fields, 92, of 882 Lower Salt River Road, Danville, died Friday, December 20, 1996 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born August 23, 1904 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Nield Sr., and Mae Schooling Nield. She was the widow of Davis Reed Fields. She was a homemaker and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Survivors include: three nieces, Margaret Weldon, Danville, Louise Listerman, Cincinnati, OH and Juanita Perry, Radcliff; five nephews, Charles Wade, Lexington, Curtis Wade, FL, Normal Nield, Boyle County, Kenneth Nield, WA and John Edgar Nield, Cincinnati, OH. Mr. Gilbert G. Driskell, 73, of 112 Walnut Street, Versailles, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996. Born in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Bascum and Virginia Lee Durr Driskell. He was a retired farmer at Randall Farm and a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Elizabeth Oliver, Georgetown; three sons, Gilbert C. "Sonny" Driskell, Mercer County, Bobby L. Driskell and Sherwood Driskell, both of Versailles; two sisters, Irene Ruark, Versailles and Nina Miller of Frankfort; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Adaline Robinson Driskell and his second wife, Edith Douglas Driskell. Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, with Rev. Russell officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Woodford County. Mr. Harold J. Horn, 63, Gentry Lane, Danville, died Monday, December 23, 1996 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. Born January 22, 1933 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Lloyd B. and Mable Lester Horn. He was a farmer and farm implement dealer and a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at the Salt River Baptist church. Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Black Horn, two daughters, Carol Howard, Campbellsville and Shawna Stomberger, Danville; one son, Bryan Horn, Danville, one sister, Christine Montgomery, Harrodsburg; two brothers, W.A. Horn, Harrodsburg, and Connie Horn, Burgin; five grandchildren, and three step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dwayne Horn. Services were held Friday, Dec. 27, at the Salt River Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Bausum. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery. Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. H.C. Black, 73, of 629 Greenbriar, died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. A native of Mercer County, he was the son of the late James Daniel and Hester Newby Black. He was the husband of Sarah Ross Black. He was a truck driver for Florida Tile. Mr. Black was a member of Mercer County Masonic Lodge # 777 and the Bruners Chapel Baptist Church. He was an army veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife, survivors include: four sons, Michael C. Black of Lakeland, FL; William Gregory Black of Cornishville, Roger Wayne Black of Lexington, Brent Black of Salt Lake City, UT; two sisters, Hattie Chilton and Hazel Lester, both of Harrodsburg; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Black and Robert Black. A private family service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Pallbearers were Danny and David Chilton, Donnie and Douglas Lester, and Terry and Brian Black.

NELL GASTINEAU
Mrs. Nell Gastineau, 94, of S. Fourth St., Louisville, died Friday, Dec. 27 1996, at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Born Sept. 26, 1902 in Indiana, but reared in Nowatta, OK, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Jennie Hurt Van Huss. She was the widow of William Bryan Gastineau. She was a retired employee of the Bluegrass Ordnance Army Depot in Richmond. She was a member of the West Side Christian Church in Richmond. Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. A.J. "Lorraine" Hatfield of Bohon and Mrs. Virgil "Virginia" Tapp of Louisville; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Doug Lucas officiating. Burial was in the Lancaster Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Kevin Hatfield, Billy Hatfield, Chris Hatfield, Kenny Tapp, Dwight Lyle and Paul Phillips. Mr. Arence "Red" Goodlett, 70, of 235 Campbell Dr. died Monday, Dec. 23, 1996, at the Vencor Hospital in Louisville. Born May 15, 1926 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Edward and Georgia Ann Cornish Goodlett and the widower of Rosie Carey Goodlett. He worked in the buffing department at HallMack. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Survivors include: a son, Donald Goodlett of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Marietta Watts of Lexington; Barbara Jeanie Henninger of Harrodsburg and Wendy Rose Goodlett of Harrodsburg; a brother, Charles Goodlett of Trenton, OH; a sister, Florence Carroll of Middletown, OH; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Thurman Goodlett, Seymore Goodlett, Tom Goodlett, Sanford Goodlett, Herbert "Hub" Goodlett, Clarence "Chub" Good-lett, and Rufus Goodlett, and two sisters, Minnie Katherine Osborne and Ann Bell Catlett. Mrs. Willie Mae Thurman Hudson, 83, of 208 Dogwood Ave., Lawrenceburg, died at 8 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 at her residence. Born Feb. 21, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Rosabell McKee Thurman. She was the widow of Saffel Hudson. She was a retired cafeteria manager at Lincoln Street School and Anderson County High School. She was formerly employed by Franklin State Hospital and School. She was a member of the Second Christian Church, the Adult Choir and the Helping Hand Club. She was a member and former board member of the Anderson County Senior Citizens. She attended the Lawrenceburg Colored High School, was a former pianist for the senior citizens and was a member of the Lawrenceburg A.M.E. Methodist Church. Survivors include: three sons, George Saffel Hudson of Harrodsburg, Donald Hudson of Lawrenceburg and Larry C. Hudson of Lawrenceburg; two daughters, Jane A. Hudson of Lawrenceburg and Mrs. Ernie (Cheryl) Guthrie of Lawrenceburg; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Gash Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ramon Smith officiated and Bro. J.D. Short assisted. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Beatrice Peavler, 87, of Cardinal Meadows died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996, at Harrodsburg Health Care. Born Sept. 7, 1909 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Cordelia Hungate Catlett. She was the widow of Delois Peavler. She was a homemaker and a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Survivors include: a daughter, Lorena Crawley of Mercer County; a brother, Woodrow Catlett of Mercer County; two grandsons; one granddaughter, and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a great-grandson, Chris Crawley. Services for Mrs. Peavler were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. The Rev. James Byrd officiated and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony and Brent Crawley, Alvin Crawley Jr., Roger Long, Donnie Neal and Ronnie Smith. MARCUS PERRY LYONS
Mr. Marcus Perry Lyons, 73, of Brooksville, FL, and formerly of Muncie, IN, died at 11:30 Wednesday, Dec. 11, at his residence. Born Aug. 18, 1923 in Danville, he was the son of Harvey and Nettie Lyons. He was a member of the Church of God in Muncie and attended the West Brookside Church of God. He retired from Ball State University in May 1980, where he managed Tool Crib Operations. He served on the Muncie, IN., Reserve Police Force for five years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific for 48 months and received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbons with one bronze star and the Good Conduct ribbon. He was a member of the Masonic Brotherhood Lodge #375, the White Shrine Guiding Star #28, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Amaranths and the Ball State University Sympathy Club. Survivors include: his wife, the former Ruby Sharp; a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Hamilton of Brooksville, FL; five grandchildren, and nine great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, James and Hurbert Lyons and two sisters, Beulah Thornton and Louise Pittman. Funeral services were held Dec. 16 in the Wellwood Funeral Home in Hudson, FL. The Rev. Bill Davis officiated and burial was in Florida Hills Memorial Gardens in Spring Hill, FL. A White Shrine Memorial Service was held Dec. 15.

CARL DUDLEY TAYLOR
Mr. Carl Dudley Taylor, 56, of 305 Boone St., died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at his residence. Born Jan. 11, 1940 in Washington County, he was the son of Beatrice Bottom Taylor and the late William Irvin Taylor. He was a mechanic for Hayslett Mechanical Contractors. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, survivors include: two sons, Carl D. Taylor Jr. of Moreland and Tony Taylor of Stanford; two daughters, Rhonda Brent of Stanford and Lisa Wilson of Cusetta, GA; a brother, Jimmy Taylor of Harrodsburg; a sister, Ann Ryan of Harrodsburg, and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Wayne. Services for Mr. Taylor were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ransdell Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Don Releford officiated and burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Hornsby, J.T. and Eugene Logue, Boo Royalty, James Hall and Donald Bottom.

LT. COL. C.B. YATES
Lt. Col. Cale Benton (C. B.) Yates Jr., U.S.A.F. Ret., 73, of Doe Valley, Brandenburg and formerly of Harrodsburg, died Dec. 16, 1996 at his residence after a long illness. Born April 30, 1923 in Danville, he was the son of the late C.B. (Sr.) and Josephine Setters Yates. He was a 1941 graduate of Harrodsburg High School and attended Georgia Tech. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and a master's degree from Florida State University. He also attended the University of Maryland and later taught Industrial Arts in Maryland. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and became a navigator, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was stationed in England during World War II. He also served in Vietnam. He retired from the service in 1971. Col. Yates was a member of the Brandenburg United Methodist Church and the Army Lodge # 1105, F&A-M, San Antonio, TX. Survivors include: his wife, Juanita Hendry Yates; two sons, Cale B. Yates III of Independence, MO, and Richard H. Yates of Kenneessaw, GA; two brothers, John S. Yates of Perry Park and Joe S. Yates of New Castle, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Dec. 19 at Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg with the Rev. Russell East officiating. Military rites were observed and burial was in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Masonic services were held Dec. 18.
