JACK COLEMAN Sr.
On Monday, Dec. 8, Mercer County suffered the loss of one of its most well-known and accomplished native sons with the death of former NBA star and Kentucky Hall of Fame athlete, Jack L. Coleman, Sr. at age 73. Coleman was born in Burgin on May 23, 1924 to David and Florence Coleman. His illustrious athletic career began at Burgin High School where the 6'7" forward/center led his team to the state basketball tournament in 1938 and helped his football team win the state championship in 1941. Following his graduation from high school, Coleman played basketball on a scholarship to Duke University during his freshman year, then enlisted in the Navy where he served and played basketball for three years during WWII. After the war, Coleman attended the University of Louisville where he was the top scorer and rebounder for the Cardinals in each of his three seasons on the team (1946-49). A two-time captain for the Cards, he led the team to a combined 69-22 record and also to the University's first national title in 1948. He scored a total of 1,114 career points at U of L and was inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. His number 16 team jersey was retired in January of 1997. Basketball was not the only sport at which Coleman excelled at U of L. He also earned third team All-America honors in football as an end in 1947 and was a stand-out player on the Cardinal baseball team. Coleman went on to play professional basketball for two NBA championship teams during the next nine years. He played six and a half years for the Rochester Royals, including 1951 when that team became national champs and then for two and a half years for the St. Louis Hawks, which team took the national title in 1958, with Coleman on board. Throughout his professional career, Coleman scored 6,721 points in 633 games. Coleman retired from professional sports in 1958, returning home to Mercer County to take up the family lumber business, an occupation he continued until his death. Although Coleman clearly qualified as the finest athlete to ever come out of Burgin, the people that knew him best said that his interest was always in helping his community and never in trading on his own reputation. "Jack was just a wonderful person," said long-time friend Hunter Burton. "He did so much for so many people; he really cared for this community." Burton, who grew up with Coleman and his three brothers, said they all used to play golf together and since the death of "Doc" and D.W. Coleman, that he and Jack had gone on golf trips as far away as Florida. "He quit playing a couple of years ago because he had a hard time walking and I've really missed that," said Burton. "I just hate it so much that he's gone; this community is going to miss him far more than they realize." Burton spoke of his friend's renowned honesty and civic responsibility, noting that Coleman had helped to found the Harrodsburg Little League program and that he and his family had financed the construction of Sportleigh Field. Burton said that Coleman, far from living his life in memory of his "glory days", loved the lumber business he owned and operated and relished his life in Mercer County. "Jack was the backbone of the lumber business around here," said Burton. "When everybody else folded, he stuck it out and made it work. He was never interested in making money, he just wanted to be in the lumber business." Coleman's legacy will live on in the accolades and honors he has received as a professional athlete, but according to Burton, it was Coleman's character and his love for his family and his community that will be most fondly remembered. "There are just not enough good things to say about Jack Coleman," said Burton. "He couldn't do enough for his friends and I don't believe he had a single enemy. He will be greatly missed." Coleman is survived by his wife, Janet Powell Coleman, Burgin; one son, State Representative Jack L. Coleman, Jr., of Burgin; one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Jan) Gross of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren, Jacqueline and Jackson Coleman, both of Burgin and Zack Gross of Harrodsburg. He was preceded in death by three brothers; Hunter "Doc" Coleman, Clell Coleman II and D.W. Coleman, and a daughter, Christie Coleman.
