Dr. Bob DeFoor, pastor of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church who worked on numerous community activities with the Rev. Ballew, said the loss is one to the whole community. "He was very generous, warm hearted and a very devote pastor and fellow minister," said Dr. DeFoor. "He was just a joy to be around and he meant a lot to our community in ways a lot of folks aren't even aware. He was a great guy. "He was really a very nice person and we all will miss him." The fatal accident occurred on Monday morning when the Rev. Ballew, who was traveling east bound on Hwy. 52, attempted to slow down after passing an escort truck, losing control of his 1987 Olds Cutlass on the wet roadway. His vehicle rotated several times, before striking the front of a 1987 Chevrolet truck pulling a mobile home, driven by Darrell Ellison, 49, of Brodhead. The Rev. Ballew's vehicle traveled over the embankment and struck a tree, according to a Kentucky State Police report by trooper Jon Allen. The Rev. Ballew was pronounced dead at about 11:25 a.m. Seat belts were not in use. A native of Richmond, the Rev. Ballew has been pastor at St. Peter since 1989. He has been preaching for about 44 years, but only full time for the last 10 years. He was a member of the Mercer County Ministerial Association and the Harrodsburg Cemetery Committee. He and his wife, Esther, have five children: Floyd, Leonard, Ruth, Bertha and Robbie. Harrodsburg City Commissioner Joe Hood noted on Tuesday night the loss the community has suffered. "He was a very faithful member of the Cemetery Committee and a very beloved pastor of this town," he said. "He will be greatly missed."
