Davis Haldon Britton, 76, of 375 Britton Road, Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born April 7, 1919, in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Archie Clay and Sara Elizabeth Howard Britton and the husband of Thelma Louise Graham Britton. He was a self-employed farmer, a member of the Cornishville Christian Church and a veteran of WWII. Including his wife, survivors include four sons: John Brewer Britton, Charles (Buddy) Britton, Danny Ray Britton and Larry David Britton, all of Mercer County; two brothers: Marion Britton and Wilbur Britton, both of Mercer County; two sisters: Gladys Reed of Mercer County and Maxie Cowan of Columbia SC; four granchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Britton and a sister, Bess Kirkland. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 5, 1996 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Marcus Prather will officiate and burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4.

VIOLA DEVINE
Mrs. Viola Royalty Devine, 71, of 216 Mercer Avenue, died Thursday, December 28, 1995, at the Samaritan Medical Center in Lexington. Born May 27, 1924, in Mercer County, she was the widow of Otha Devine and the daughter of the late Ralph and Ellar Godfrey Royalty. She was a homemaker, a member of the Benton Baptist Church and had attended Immanuel Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Garnett and Donald J. Devine, both of Mercer County; three daughters, Helen Black of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Loretta Casey and Virginia Burton, both of Mercer County; two brothers, Herman Royalty of Dayton, Ohio, and Robert Royalty of Mercer County; one sister, Hazel Davenport of Mercer County, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Devine. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Barry Jeffries officiating. Burial was held in Patterson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary Devine, Allen Devine, Danny Black, Thomas Wayne Perkins, Jr., Dennis Devine and Greg Devine.

THELMA BEELER
Award-winning teacher Thelma Champion Beeler, 91, of Cherokee Park, Lexington, and a native of Mercer County, died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1995. Mrs. Beeler, who was in education for 75 years, taught her last day Dec. 21, 1995, when Lafayette High School dismissed for the holiday break. Mrs. Beeler started Lafayette's award-winning debate program in 1939. In 1976, Lafayette's auditorium was renamed for her. An annual debate tournament at the school also bore her name. In 1992, she was inducted into the University of Kentucky College of Education Hall of Fame. In 1993, she was one of 10 winners of Teacher Achievement Awards from Ashland Oil Inc. Mrs. Beeler taught full-time at Lafayette from 1945 to 1974. She taught English, speech and drama. Among her former students were Gov. John Y . Brown and actor Jim Varney. After she retired she immediately signed up as a substitute teacher. She helped out in Lafayette's suspension room, helped with speech tournaments and sold tickets to the school's basketball and football games. Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late John Paul Champion and Emma Ison. She grew up around Shakertown, which her grandfather John H. Champion, helped to build. She was the widow of the Rev. T.W. Beeler. She studied at Asbury College and at what is now Eastern Kentucky University. She received a master's degree from UK. She began her education career in 1922 at a two-room school at Mt. Zion in Mercer County. She later taught in Cincinnati, OH, and Campbell, Harlan and Madison counties before moving to Lexington. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include: two grandsons, Chester Wayne "Skip" Beeler II of Charlotte NC, and Thomas Champion "Champ" Beeler of Knoxville, TN; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Wayne Beeler and Melissa Allison Beeler, both of Moreno Valley, CA; a daughter-in-law, Bettie Beeler Newell of Santa Rosa, FL; a sister-in-law, Mildred Champion of Lexington; five cousins; two nieces, and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a son, Chester Wayne Beeler, and two brothers, Earl Champion and Harry Champion. Services for Mrs. Beeler will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at W.R. Milward Mortuary - Southland. Dr. Harold W. Dorsey and Dr. Howard H. Willen will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. JOHN MAYES
John Thurman Mayes, 81, of 345 Woodsland Drive, Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born July 29, 1914 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Virgil and Nell Collins Mayes and the husband of Margaret Balden Mayes. He was retired from the laundry and dry cleaning business and was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church. He was past president of the Mercer County Fair and Horse Show and served as a board member for a number of years. In addition to his wife, survivors include, two brothers: Virgil Mayes, Jr. of Harrodsburg and Billy Mayes of Mercer County; and one sister: Mary Katherine Clark of Frankfort. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 1996 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Dr. David Hartmen and Rev. Carroll Wallace will officiate and burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3. Mrs. Cecilia Belle Hill, 85, of Harrodsburg Health Care, died Thursday, January 4, 1996, after a long illness. Born May 28, 1910 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Jackson, Sr. and Laura Pittman Jackson and was the widow of Frank Hill. She was a retired employee of the Los Angeles, CA Water and Power Company, a member and elder of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, attended Howard University in Washington, DC and was a graduate of Kentucky State University in Frankfort. Survivors include an aunt, Mrs. Laura Pittman, Harrodsburg; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Jackson, Louisville; several nieces and nephews including Debra Jackson Yeast of Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by four brothers, J. T., Robert, Charles and James Garnett Jackson and one sister, Maggie Lou Wofford. Services were at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 7, at the Parks Funeral Home with Andrew Alexander officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Jackson, Robert, Mark, and Eric Wofford and Nick Yeast.

Mrs. Martha Christine Teater Tyler, 72, of Glasgow, died Tuesday, January 2, 1995 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. She was a native of Mercer County and was the daughter of Ben and Mazie Gray Teater. She attended Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include: one son, Wayne Babb, Davenport, IA; one daughter, Shirley Babb Ward, Glasgow; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday, January 6, at the Calvary Baptist Church. Graveside services were held Sunday, January 7 in Spring Hill Cemetery. A. F. Mrs. Juanita Royalty Turner, age 83, of 231 Davis Lane, Springfield, died at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 1996 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born March 20, 1912, she was a native of Washington County an the daughter of the late Timothy Hancock and Lina Etta Pinkston Royalty. She was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Turner on March 10, 1985. Survivors include: two sons, Charles Turner, Mackville, and Norman Turner of Washington County; one daughter, Mrs. Burtice (Brenda) Russell, Mackville; five grandchildren, including Mrs. Laverne Lay of Harrodsburg. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Enoch, Hollie, Champ and B. M. Royalty and three sisters, Margie Sims, Lillie Leonard and Grace Ruby. Mrs. Mildred Shewmaker Bottom, age 89, of 10616 Main Street, Mackville, died at 1:05 p.m., Monday, January 8, 1996 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. A native of Washington County, she was born October 2, 1906, the daughter of the late Walter and Mayme Bottom Shewmaker. She was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall "Pete" Bottom on June 6, 1978. Survivors include: one son, Carl D. Bottom, Frankfort; one brother, Lloyd Shewmaker, Burgin, three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 10 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with the Rev. Ted Beam officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gary Ellcessor. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery. Born August 31, 1941 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Bailey and Katie Anderson Bailey Hendren. She was manager of the Simply Fashion shop in Louisville and a member of the Little Flock Baptist Church. Born February 20, 1922 in Garrard County she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha Pryor Buckley. She was a housewife and a member of the Burgin Baptist Church. Army veteran where he served in World War II, a member of the Salt River Baptist Church, Danville, and a former member of the American Legion and VFW. Survivors include: his wife, Catherine Hill Lyons; two sons, Willis and Floyd Lyons, both of Danville; two daughters, Frances Ellis, Lexington, Mabel Estes, Harrodsburg; two brothers, Herbert Lyons, Harrodsburg, Marcus Lyons, Florida, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Lyons. Funeral services were Wednesday, January 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Salt River Baptist Church with Bro. Bob Bausum officiating. He was a graduate of Transylvania University, a member of Englewood Lodge #743 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Shrine and longtime member of Northmont/Randolph Optimist Club. He was a U. S. Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Dayton Area Board of Realtors, and a former member of the Northmont Board of Education. Survivors include his wife, Ara K. Wright, Englewood; his mother, Alice E. Wright, Englewood, OH, two sons, Michael S. Wright, Chicago, David B. Wright, Cincinnati; three grandchildren; his in-laws, Guy and Ruth Goodlett of Burgin. He was preceded in death by his father, Grant E. Wright. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Richard and Marvin McMullin and two sisters, Hallie Lawson and Elizabeth Ann McMullin. He was the husband of Leona Catherine Proctor Casey and son of the late Willie and Lena Frances Sparrow Casey. He was a farmer, a mill worker for Combs Lumber Co. in Lexington and an employee of the Lawrenceburg Cemetery. He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon since 1958. Mrs. Valma Marvelle Colyer Cocanougher, 91, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Daytona Beach, Florida, died January 18, 1996 at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. She had lived in Daytona Beach since 1984 having moved from Middlesboro where she retired from South Central Bell Telephone Company. Born in Louisville, July 9, 1904, she was the daughter of the late James Copeland and Ethel Lovel Hawkins Colyer. She graduated from Danville High School and was employed by Western Union in Danville. She was the widow of William Caldwell Cocanougher and together they operated Cocanougher's Service Station on Hwy. 68 in Harrodsburg during the 1930s and 1940s. She worked for many years as the night telephone operator in Harrodsburg. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Daytona Beach and was an Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church in Middlesboro. She was formerly active in the The Telephone Pioneers of America, a member of AARP and was a Kentucky Colonel. She is survived by a daughter; Jane Cocanougher Harmon, Daytona Beach, FL, two grandsons and two great grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in Spring Hill Cemetery by Rev. David Hartman. She was a 1934 graduate of Kavanaugh High School in Lawrenceburg, attended Southern Seminary, Louisville, and she and the Rev. Shely served at the Shawnee Run Baptist Church for 23 years, the Clear Creek Baptist, Woodford County and as interim for several Mercer and Boyle churches. Survivors include: four daughters: Mrs. Charles (Evelyn) Matherly, Danville; Mrs. Ron (Dee) Johnston, Stephens City, VA; Dixie Donnell and Oneta Brandenburg, both of Lawrenceburg; one son, Gilbert Shely, Jr., Pikeville; one brother, Silas Crook, McDonald, TN; three sisters, Oneta Cogswell, Frankfort, Evelyn Crook, Danville and Frona Billeter, Campbellsville; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. MARSHALL BLACK
Rev. Marshall Black, 84, of North Hoskins Street, Campbellsville, died Wednesday, January 31, 1996 in Liberty. A native of Mercer County, he was born February 20, 1911, the son of the late Daniel and Hester Newby Black. He was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at Rose Hill High School, Harrodsburg High School, Taylor County High School and Campbellsville College, where in addition to teaching history he served as business manager. He was a retired Southern Baptist Minister, having pastored churches in Mercer and Taylor counties, primarily, and for Kentucky Baptist Missions. He was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church in Campbellsville and a member of the McAfee Masonic Lodge #229 F&AM in Harrodsburg. He was married to Edith Freeman December 21, 1933 who died, October 24, 1974. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Bruce Black, September 29, 1990. He united in marriage to Cleo O'Banion Gabehart, December 27, 1978, who survives him. Other survivors include: one son and two daughters-in-law; Terry and Carol Black, Louisville, and Betty Black, Lewisville, TX; one step-daughter and step-son, Margaret Moore and David Lynn Gabehart, Louisville; one brother and three sisters-in-law and two sisters and one brother-in-law: H. C. and Sarah Black, Hazel and Carlos Lester, Hattie Chilton, Aileen Black, and Eva Norvell, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters: Robert Black, Harold Black, Ruby Black and Aubrey Black. ROBERT VANARSDALL
Mr. Robert Scott VanArsdall, 95, of 409 N. First Street, Burgin, died Thursday, February 8, 1996 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born January 2, 1901 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Lena Cook VanArsdall. He was the widower of Nell Garrett VanArsdall. He was a farmer, a member of Burgin Christian Church, a former member of the Burgin Lions Club and past president, and a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include: two sons: Fred Wesley and Robert Charles VanArsdall, both of Burgin, one daughter, Julia Ann V. Barnott, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Services for Mr. VanArsdall were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10, at the Burgin Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Reiss and Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Baxter, A. T. Dean, Jr., Geo. W. (Bud) Van-Arsdall, Lloyd Pickett, Bob Hester and Charles Goodlett. WASH HARDIN
Mr. Wash Hardin, 89, of 108 W. Brooke Street, Burgin, died Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at Harrodsburg Health Care. Born July 23, 1906 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John Hardin and Lydia Drury Hardin. He was the widower of Ruth Dean Hardin. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Survivors include: two step sons, Edward Henninger, Burgin, and Raymond Henninger, : one step daughter, Mary Rose Bugg, Harrodsburg; one brother, Arthur Lee Hardin, Lexington; one sister, Maude Hardin, Harrodsburg; 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services for Mr. Hardin were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 9 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Don Releford officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad and Shawn Henninger, Mark, Robert, Roger Lyons, and Steve Goodlett.

BOYD PEARCE
Mr. Boyd Anderson Pearce, 74, of 992 Beaumont Ave., died Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born May 15, 1921 in East Bernstadt, he was the son of the late Butler and Fannie Farris Pearce. He was a truck driver, a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church, VFW and the American Legion. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include: his wife, Lois Pearce, Harrodsburg; one brother, Bruce Pearce, Simpsonville; two sisters: Wilma Mattingly, Danville, and Bonnie Hall, Georgetown. He was preceded in death by one son, Don Boyd Pearce and one brother, Garnett Pearce. Services for Mr. Pearce were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 9 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Hartman and the Rev. Carroll Wallace officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cleo Camic, Charles Bunton, Garland Yankey, Robert Nelson, Calvin Wiley and James Martin. Honorary bearers were Herbert Burns and members of the Goodwill Sunday School Class. LILLIE HATFIELD
Mrs. Lillie Mae Hatfield, 93, of 308 East Mill Street, Burgin, died Sunday, February 11 at her residence. Born September 23, 1902 in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late Arnie and Nora Lou Montgomery Naylor. She was the widow of William Everett Hatfield. She was a homemaker, and a member of Fairview Christian Church in Garrard County. Survivors include: one son, A. J. Hatfield, Bohon; one brother, Ben Naylor, Lancaster; one sister, Mrs. Fannie Cox of Anderson, IN; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Two daughters, Irene Scull and Lula Gaffney and one grandson preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 14 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Stan Houser officiating. Burial in Old Paint Lick Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons: Kevin and Billy Hatfield, Art, Jimmy and Bob Gaffney and Mike Scull. Honorary bearers were Gary and Roger Hatfield, Chris Hatfield, Carl Clark, Brad Darland and Charles Johnstone.

Mrs. Eleanor O'Neill Stratton, 85, 337 Leslie Avenue, Bowling Green, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, February 10, 1996 at the Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green. Born July 13, 1910 in Augusta, she was the daughter of the late J. Kline and Margaret Hamilton O'Neill. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, St. Andrew Church Choir and St. Andrew Altar Society. She was the widow of Kenny Stratton. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Ronnie (Martha) Long, Harrodsburg; two sons, Billy Brummett, Crystal Beach, FL and Frank Brummett, Bowling Green; two step-sons, Tom Stratton, Marysville, WA and Bob Stratton, Winston Salem, NC; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. Memorial services and interment of ashes were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 14 in Spring Hill Cemetery by Sister Maria Browne. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Andrew Catholic Church Choir Fund. McClellan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born January 8, 1928 in Madison County he was the son of the late Joe and Jessie Conner White. He was a retired farmer and had served in the U. S. Army. He was the widower of Ruth Price White. Survivors include: one son, Jamie Joe White, Harrodsburg; four daughters, Mrs. Charlene Gibson, Mrs. Mary Durham and Mrs. Regina Deringer, all of Harrodsburg, and Mrs. Jewell Phillips of Burgin; one step daughter, Debra Burrows, Tioga, PA; two brothers, Homer White of Danville and Bobby White of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Carroll, Burgin and Mrs. Lucille Freeman, Harrodsburg; 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren. One brother, Herbert White and one daughter Regena White preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Rodgers officiating. Mr. Robert A. Davenport, 77, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. A native of Mercer County, he was the son of the late Addis and Mae Robinson Davenport. He was a former owner of Davenport and Sharpe Insurance Agency, a member of Southland Christian Church, the PTA Sunday School Class and Prime Timers, member of Lexington Lodge #1 F&AM, a York Rite Mason, member of the Oleika Shrine Temple, a Kentucky Colonel and a WW II veteran. Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, Albertine Grimes Davenport, Lexington; a niece, Iris June Ellecamp, Calabash, NC; a nephew, Forest Gordon Davenport, Ft. Myers, FL. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Ann Gritton, and a brother, Gilbert D. Davenport. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 15 at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Southland, conducted by the Rev. Garrett Stephens and the Rev. Craig Yates. Graveside services were held at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Born November 12, 1911 in Washington county, she was the daughter of the late William Baxter and Blanche Carpenter Elliott. She was retired from Cricketeer, a member of the Magnolia Street Christian Church and the widow of Elwood Young. Survivors include: one son, Kenneth Young of Harrodsburg, three daughters Mrs. J. W. (Evelyn) Mattingly, Mrs. Bronson (Nancy) Yeast, and Mrs. Kenneth (Norma) Martin all of Harrodsburg; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren Ken Douglas Martin, Kim Yeast and Tammy Yeast. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 16 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dr. Paul Bohrer, Bro. Robert E. Jones and Ethbert "Sonny" Norris officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Martin, Chuck Scoggins, Jack Mattingly, Steve Mattingly, Scott Sheperson, Bob Young and Lynn Releford.
