Born January 4, 1914, at Magoffin County, she was a daughter of the late Russell Wisecup and Mary Jane Patrick Wisecup, and was a homemaker. Preceding her in death was her husband, Creed Arnett; three brothers, Wilburn Wisecup, Hargis Wisecup and Leck Wisecup; five sisters, Layvania Rowe, Minnie Wisecup, Louvanie Wisecup, Louvernie Wisecup and Issie Wisecup. Survivors include one daughter, Irene Piercy, of Clinton, Michigan; two brothers, Lloyd Wisecup of Salyersville and Noble Wisecup of New Haven, West Virginia; two grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 2 at 11 a.m. at the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel with Simon Porter officiating. Burial followed at Family Cemetery at Middle Fork. Magoffin County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARTIN COUNTY—Eula Mae Farley, 59, of Crum, W. V. died July 31 at Williamson Memorial Hospital, South Williamson. Born January 12, 1942 in Wayne County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Vee and Betty Hinkle, a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Bill Floyd Farley of Crum, W.Va.; five sons, Neil and Todd Allen Farley of Stepptown, W. Va., Michael, Bill, and Bruce Farley of Columbus, Ohio.; two daughters, Ethel Mae Farley Purvis and Terina Lynn Evans of Stepptown, W. Va.; six brothers, Harden, Owen, Mark, Ike, and Bryand Hinkle of Ohio., and Roger Hinkle of W.Va.; eight sisters, Beatrice Christianson of W.Va., Marie, Swanie, Mary, and Mary Bell Hinkle of Ohio., and Ethel Fairchild and Lena Obert of Ohio.; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Farely was preceded in death by three brothers, John C., Robert V., and Jess Hinkle. Services were held at Golden Springs Freewill Baptist Church with ministers Ken and Jess Allen and Billy Messer officiating. Burial followed at the Williamson Cemetery, Jennies, W.Va. Arrangements were conducted by Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.

Deborah Katherine Conley

JOHNSON COUNTY — Deborah Katherine Conley, 48, of Wittensville, died Tuesday, July 31 at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Born March 8, 1953, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, she was a daughter of Charles Cecil Cassidy and Evelyn Findley Cassidy. She was a Speech-Language Pathologist. Survivors include her husband, Delbert Paul Conley; one son, Michael Keith Conley, of Wittensville; one sister, Deanna Cassidy of New Albany, Indiana; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 2, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Paintsville, with Father Ralph Beiting officiating. Burial was at Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville. Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ida Carter Curtis

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ida Carter Curtis, 84, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Lawrence County, died July 30, at Mt. Carmel West Hospital, Columbus. She was preceded in death by husbands, Elbert Carter, in 1974, and Elliott Curtis, in 1999; and one son, Byron Carter, in 1996. Born January 31, 1917, in Little Blaine, a daughter of the late Thomas and Emma McCommas Moore, she was a Freewill Baptist. Survivors include three sons, Clarence Carter of Bedford, PA, Eugene Carter of Columbus and James Dock Carter of Louisa; three daughters, Betty (E.C.) Webb, Myrtia (William) Moore, and Kathryn (Charles) Barrowman, all of Columbus; two sisters, Roberta Bowers of Hudson, Ohio, and Wavie Newsome of Lithopolis, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by Roger Jordan August 2, at Heston Funeral Home, Louisa, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Louisa. Heston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Lee Allie

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio - Nellie Lee Allie, 76, of Gallipolis, Ohio, died July 30 at Holzer Senior Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Allie, in 1976; and three brothers, Norman Pack, Elbert Pack Jr. and Raymond D. Pack. Born April 2, 1925, in Kentucky, a daughter of the late Elbert Sr. and Laura Belle Dameron Pack, she was a homemaker, a member of Alexander Methodist Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include one son, James C. (Jeri) Allie of Gallipolis; four grandchildren, Michael (Kate) McCormick of Jackson, Ohio, Nichole McCormick of Columbus, Ohio, Jamie Allie and Jessica Allie, both of Gallipolis; one brother, Garland (Elsie) Pack of Crossville, TN; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah McCormick of Jackson, Ohio; brother and sister -in-law, Walter and Mary Allie of Gallipolis; and three sisters in law, Willa Mae Rucker, and Myrna Pack, both of Columbus, and Kay Pack of Lancaster, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Alfred Holley August 4 at Willis Funeral Home with burial in Centenary Cemetery. Willis Funeral Home was in charge or arrangements.

Thomas (Bob) Conrad

LAWRENCE COUNTY - Thomas (Bob) Conrad, 65, of Louisa died August 1, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, WV. Born March 20, 1936, in Hollidaysburg, PA, a son of the late Thomas R. Sr. and Marie I. Metzer Conrad, he was a retired truck driver for Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, a member of Garrett Chapel United Methodist Church, American Legion, and a Korean War veteran. Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn Conrad of Louisa; two daughters, Sheryl Conrad of Duncansville, PA, and Alice Conrad, at home; three sons, Thomas R. Conrad IV of Columbus, Ohio, David Conrad of Clearfield, PA, and Raymond Conrad at home; two sisters, Carol White of Sand Gap and Sandra Brown of Newry, PA; one brother, John Conrad of Galt, CA; and seven grandchildren. Graveside funeral service were conducted by Reverend Bob Dilley and Members of W. O. Johnson American Legion Post 89 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6103 August 4 with burial in Rosehill Burial Park, Ashland. Wilson Funeral Home, Louisa, was in charge of arrangements.

LAWRENCE COUNTY - James B. Green, 86, died Saturday, August 4, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Prestonsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Green, in 1985. Born June 29, 1915, in Mattie, a son of the late Enoch and Lucy Ball Green, he was a janitor at the Lawrence County Court House and a member of Enterprise Baptist Church. Survivors include one sister, Clista Mae Cantrell of Flat Gap; one half-sister, Lou Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by Reverend John Pelphrey August 6 at Young Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Louisa. Young Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Bethel Blair, 77, of Denver, died Saturday, August 4, at Hilton Hollow, Denver. Born March 14, 1924, at Denver, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Hitchcock and Hannah Hitchcock. She was a homemaker. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Harlan Blair, Jr. Survivors include six sons, David Dion Blair of Inez, Jerry Dean Blair of Martin, Timothy Lee Blair, Jackie Allen Blair, and Billie J. Blair, all of Urbana, Ohio, and Jimmie Edward Blair of Richmond; six daughters, Teresa Lynn Vanhoose of Tutor Key, Lisa Ann Murry of Meally, Tenia Sue Ratliff of Denver, Betsy Jane Auxier of Hagerhill, Jean Sharon Spears of Urbana, and Bonnie Faye Hurd of Dunlap, Tennessee; one sister, Betty Lee McCarty of Wabash, Indiana; 34 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 6, at 11 a.m., with Jerry Scott and Leroy Auxier officiating at the Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Blair Family Cemetery at Denver. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Luther Clouse
Luther Clouse, 84, of Thealka, died Wednesday, August 1, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center. He was a retired coal miner and a member of Free Will Baptist. He was the son of the late John Silas and Ruby Pearl Burton Clouse. Also preceding his death was his wife, Anna Lee Daniels Clouse. Survivors include two sons, Gordon Clouse of Paintsville and Danny Clouse of Thealka; four daughters, Diane Clouse, Glendora VanHoose, and Janet Clouse, all of Thealka, Phyllis Mitchell of Eastern; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 4, at Preston Funeral Chapel, with David Allen officiating. Burial was at Daniels Family Cemetery at Thelma. Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard “Tuck” Helton

MAGOFFIN COUNTY — Leonard “Tuck” Helton, 54, of Salyersville, died Sunday, August 5, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Born March 6, 1947, in Magoffin County, he was a son of Vera Helton Patton and the late John Helton. He was a disabled concrete finisher. Survivors include his wife, Penny Adams Helton; five sons, Leonard Paul Helton of Springboro, Ohio, Johnathon Helton and Rexel Helton, both of Somerset, Cory Adams Helton and Gary Trusty Helton, both of Salyersville; one daughter, Johnda Morris of Morehead; two stepdaughters, Roxie Pennington of Springboro, Ohio and Vicki Senters of Somerset; two brothers, Larry Helton and Johnnie Helton, both of Salyersville; two sisters, Betty Mauk of Salyersville, and Jo Ann Whitt of Grayson; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 8, at the Magoffin County Funeral Chapel, with Willard Holiday, Larry Patrick, and Otis Trusty officiating. Burial will be at Helton Cemetery at Lick Creek. Magoffin County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOHNSON COUNTY — James Heber Conley, 82, of Paintsville, died August 4 at Mt. Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville. Born December 18, 1918, in Johnson County, he was a son of the late Heber Conley and Julia Hazlett, and was retired from KY/WV Gas Company. Survivors include his wife, Esta Scott; two brothers, Robert M. Conley and Morris Conley, both of Paintsville; two sisters, May White Butcher and Sue Sherman, both of Paintsville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, August 6, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Hoge Hockensmith, Dr. Charles Milam and Rev. Donnie Patrick officiating. Burial will be at the Mayo Memorial Cemetery in Paintsville, with Senior Deacons as Honorary Pallbearers and Sunday School Class as Active Pallbearers. Virginia Lee Howard McCroy

MAGOFFIN COUNTY — Virginia Lee Howard McCroy, 81, of Evansville, Indiana, formerly of Magoffin County, died Monday, July 30, at Parkview Nursing Home. Born August 24, 1919, in Magoffin County, she was a daughter of the late Green and Grace Salyer Howard. She was a self-employed restaurant owner. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Loretta Allen and Mae Howard. Survivors include one daughter, Arnoldis Salyer Lamb Mattingly, of Evansville, Indiana; one sister, Reva Salyer of Lexington; three grandchildren, Aaron Lamb, Karan Woods and Korey Lamb; and one great-grandchild, Austin Allen Kempt. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 2, 2001, at the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel, with David Profitt officiating. Burial was at Green Howard Cemetery, Flat Fork. Born April 4, 1918, in Morgan County, she was a daughter of the late David Lyndon and Mary Purcell Lyndon. She was a homemaker and a member of the Faith Baptist Church at Salyersville. Preceding her death was her husband, Smith Slusher, three brothers, Arnold Lyndon, Sterling Lyndon and Baby Lyndon. Survivors include one daughter, Sherry Miller of Salyersville; one sister, Opal Rudd of Burkheart; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 6 at 11 a.m. at the Faith Baptist Church at Salyersville with Lyndsey Meade and Wayne Meade officiating. Burial was at Bluegrass Cemetery, Salyersville. FLOYD COUNTY — Orbie Prater Vaughan, 94, of Prestonsburg, died Thursday, July 5, at Riverview Health Center. Born July 5, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Columbus (Lum) Prater and Caroline Johnson. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church at Prestonsburg, life member of Miriam Rebekah Lodge #31 and Independent Christian Women’s Fellowship Mother of the Year, 1988. She was preceded in death by her husband, David (Dove) J. Vaughan; one son, Martin L. Vaughan; and one brother, Taylor Prater. Survivors include three sons, John E. Vaughan of Tennessee, Dr. Ronald E. Vaughn of Ohio, and Joe E. Vaughan of Lexington; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 1, at 1:00 pm, at Community United Methodist Church at Prestonsburg, with Rev. Steven Pescosolido officiating. Burial was at Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ramey and Betsy Ann Estep Ramey. She was a retired nurse at Paintsville Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Otis Webb; three sons, Franklin D. Goble of Auxier, Charles O. Webb of East Point, and Martin L. Webb of Louisa; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 5, at 2 p.m., at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home with David Flannery officiating. Burial was at Yatesville Memorial Gardens at Louisa. Oppy Sadie Gibson

MARTIN COUNTY—Oppy Sadie Gibson, 79, of Inez died July 31. Born January 4 in Martin County, the daughter of the late Fred and Gertrude Jewell Davis. Survivors include one daughter, Vivian Brewer of W.Va.; three sisters, Inis Blackburn of Inez, Helen McGinnis of Tomahawk, and Josie Harmon of South Carolina; and four grandchildren. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) Gibson; three brothers, Martin Davis, George Davis, and Kenny Jewell; and one sister, Ethel Jewitt. Services were held August 3 at Inez Church of Christ with ministers James R. Maynard and Lewis L. Maynard officiating. Burial followed at the Damron Cemetery, Big Elk. Arrangements were conducted by Phelps and Son Funeral Home.

Bertha Mae Cooksey Brown

FLOYD COUNTY — Bertha Mae Cooksey Brown, 67, of Prestonsburg, died Friday, July 27, at Highlands Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Born January 16, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Bennie Ray and Elizabeth McGuire Cooksey. She was a graduate of Meade Memorial High School and Ashland Business College. She worked at Brown Produce Company in Prestonsburg and Brown Foodservice in Louisa. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Prestonsburg. She also had her pilots license to fly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Cecil Brown. Survivors include two sons, Larry Dean (Terri Rae Spradlin), Gary Douglas (Dawn Michelle Musser), both of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Georganne (Donald Wayne, Jr.) Taylor, of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Jean Rae (Howard) Moore, and Frances Marie (Don) Sorrell of Ashland; two brothers, Johnny Mack (Diane Warrix) Cooksey of Lexington, and Tommy Dan (Patricia Musser) Cooksey of Ashland; three grandsons, Jordan Chase Brown, Andrew Tyler Brown, and Garrett Woodson McGuire Brown, all of Prestonsburg; one granddaughter, Lindsey Michelle Brown of Prestonsburg; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, 2 pm, at First United Methodist Church, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Wayne Sayre officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery, under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Robert Sorrell, Wayne Brown, Dan Cooksey, Ben Cooksey, Mark Moore and Matthew Moore.

Rex Gearheart

FLOYD COUNTY — Rex Gearheart, 85, of Hi Hat, died Monday, July 30, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, following an extended illness. Born October 28, 1915, at Gearheart, he was a son of the late Andy Jackson Gearheart and Sally Moore Gearheart. He was a retired coal miner, a 106th Calvary World War II veteran, a member of the D.A.V. Chapter 128 at Garrett, past master of the Masonic Lodge #889 at Wheelwright, a charter member of the Left Beaver Rescue Squad, a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 5899 at Wheelwright, and a member of the CCC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Allen Gearheart; three sons, Roy Gearheart, Fred Gearheart and Rush Gearheart; and one sister, May Gearheart. Survivers include two daughters, Judy Reed and Jane Gross, both of Price; one sister, Helen Gearheart Hall of Hi Hat; five grandchildren, James, Lisa, Tanya, Onette and Bryan; four great-grandchildren, Rachael, Morgan, Jeremy and Destiny. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 2, at 1 pm, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home. Burial will be at Little Cemetery at Price. The DAV funeral was conducted by Chapter 128 at Garrett; the Masonic Funeral conducted Wednesday at 7 pm by Masonic lodge #889. Nelson-Frazier Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Willis Maynard

MARTIN COUNTY—Willis Maynard, 50, of Inez died August 4 at U.K. Medical Center. Born February 3, 1951 in Martin County, the son of the late Jesse and Mary Belle Maynard. Survivors include his wife, Donna Maynard; son, Willis Maynard, Jr of Inez; daughter, Tina F. Spears of Tomahawk; grandson, Austin Spears; one brother, Jeffrey Maynard of Inez; and one sister, Annie Johnson of Marryville, Ohio. Maynard was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Dean, and Walter Maynard; Estel and Joy Bowen; and sister, Verlie “Bill” Maynard. Services were held August 7 at the Pack Bottom United Baptist Church with ministers, Brumley Marcum and Lonnie Ratliff officiating. Burial followed at Maynard Cemetery. Arrangements were conducted by Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.
