CHRISTINE YOUNG

Christine Young, 93, of Greenwood Drive, died Monday, August 11, 2003 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born December 9, 1909 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Jackson and Lizzie Mae Robinson.

She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught first and second grades in Mercer County for several years.

She attended Berea College and graduated from Eastern Kentucky State College.

She was an active member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church and enjoyed being active in the antique car club.

Survivors include: one daughter-in-law, Janice R. Young, Lawrenceburg; two grandchildren, Larry W. Young, Lexington and Mike Young, Lawrenceburg, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David H. Young, one sister, Blondella Harmon, and three brothers, Woodrow Robinson, Royce Cornish and T. Jay Robinson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 13, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Don Chase officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Vernon McGuire, Doug Harmon, Billy Joe Robinson, Dennis Robinson, Mike Robinson, Troy Harmon, Wesley Harmon, Brandon Harmon and Charles Richard Robinson.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, Heritage Hospice, or the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

ELVA ABNER
Elva Jones Abner, 88, of Lawrenceburg, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lawrenceburg.

Born February 5, 1915 in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Bob and Ollie Jones. She was the widow of John Malcolm Abner.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Alvie (Gwendolyn) Abner, Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren, Lorrie Gritton, Lawrenceburg, Robin Goldsmith, Frankfort, Tim Abner, Lexington, Kristi Pijanka and Janet Wiley, both of Mercer County; four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Jack, Roy and Raymond Abner, and a daughter, Janet Abner.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 19, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Mounts officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Blaine Gritton, Anthony Gritton, Adam Gritton, Tim Abner, David Shewmaker and Butch Merchant.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Kentucky Chapter, 3703 Taylorsville Road, Suite 102, Louisville, KY 40220-1330.

CRAIG BURTON
John Craig Burton, 63, 180 West Mason Street, Danville, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at his residence.

Born July 10, 1940 in Indianapolis, IN he was the son of John M. Burton, Harrodsburg, and the late Velma Clifford Burton.

He was a retired machine operator for General Cable in Lawrenceburg and a member of the Danville Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include: his wife, Patsy Durr Burton, Danville; one son, Jonathan Keith Burton, PA; two brothers, Glave Vivion Burton, Harrodsburg, and Donald Wayne Burton, Hustonville; one grandchild, Jonathan F. Burton, PA. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Edward Burton.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 18, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Mark East and Gary Story. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Mercer County.

Pallbearers were Eddie Burton, Doodle Coontz, Ricky Keller, David Peavler, Frank Preston, Jack Preston, Paul Preston, Jr., and Winston Preston.

Memorials are suggested to Heritage Hospice of Danville.

AGNES COATNEY

Agnes Gilkey Coatney, 74, of Carlisle, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at her residence.

A native of Bourbon County, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Mattie Honaker McKenzie.

She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors include: her husband, Lester Coatney, Carlisle; two sons, Keith Coatney, Lexington, and Jack (Jessica) Coatney, Harrodsburg; one daughter, Dana Yeager, Harrodsburg; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 18 at Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home, Carlisle, with Ryan Coatney officiating. Burial was in Carlisle Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Carl Coatney, Ryan Coatney, Sonny Coatney, Paul Horn, Gary Hurst and Justin Massey.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

VIVIAN GOOD

Vivian Holcomb Good, 86, of Third Street, Nicholasville, formerly of Burgin, died Saturday August 16, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

She was the daughter of the late William Bradley and Beatrice Stotts Holcomb.

She was retired from Suburban Propane Gas Company and was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital and Thomson Hood Veteran Center.

She was a member of Nicholasville United Methodist Church, a member of the Ruth Cook Circle and Wise Sunday School class.

Survivors include: one son, Brad (Dena) Good, Atlanta, GA; and two grandchildren, Judson and Emily Good.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 18, at the Nicholasville United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Young officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Nicholasville.

Pallbearers were Jay Lukins, Jean Kittner, Mary O’Neill, Ann Elston, Jim Holcomb, Ted Holcomb and Libbie Kerr.

Contributions are suggested to American Kidney Foundation, or Nicholasville United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund.

Betts and West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, was in charge of arrangements.

EARL FOSTER JENKINS

Earl Foster “Billy Gum” Jenkins, 85, of 105 Baughman Avenue, Danville, died Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 2003 at his home.

A native of Lincoln County, he was born May 30, 1918 and was the son of the late Arthur Thomas Jenkins and Myrtle Wall Jenkins. His daughter, Debbie Jenkins Cook, is a reporter for The Harrodsburg Herald.

He was a retired employee of Corning Glass Works in Danville and owner of the former Cold Springs Inn restaurant and gift shop at Hall’s Gap.

He is survived by his wife, Ines Owens Jenkins of Danville; two daughters, Barbara Jenkins Randolph of Moreland, and Debbie Jenkins Cook of Danville; two sisters, Frances Anderson and Aletha Newton, both of Danville; five grandchildren including Kim Randolph Funkhouser of Danville, Dr. Michael Shane Randolph of Moreland, Jennifer Randolph Smith of Mt. Salem, and Kristi Jo and David Cook, both of Danville, and five great-grandchildren, Joshua Sallee and Holly Funkhouser of Danville, Jonathon and Jacob Randolph of Moreland and Tucker Keith Smith of Mt. Salem.

Jenkins was preceded in death by a sister, Lula Sexton, and two brothers, Ervin and Roy “Jack” Jenkins.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Stanford, with the Revs. Ernest Martin and Rev. Doug Wesley officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery at Hall’s Gap.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Dr. Michael Shane Randolph and David Cook, great-grandson Joshua Sallee, and nephews, Charles T. “Bim” Newton, Bob Newton and Harold “Butch” Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men’s Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church in Danville, and Russell Burton, Junior Davidson, Richard Otto and Cecil Jenkins.

HEATHER McKINNEY

Heather Dyan McKinney, 26, of Saffell Street, Lawrenceburg, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

She was a native of Fayette County and the daughter of Deborah Diane Walton, Lawrenceburg, and William McKinney.

She was a former first assistant manager at Lawrenceburg McDonald’s and Burger King. She was a 1994 graduate of Anderson County High School where she played basketball for six years.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include: one sister, Leslie Shea (Lynn) Hardin, Lawrenceburg; one half-sister, Joyce Anne (Tony) Bailey, Harrodsburg; maternal grandfather, Truman Barnett, Louisville; a special friend, Keith Peyton, Lawrenceburg. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Joyce Whitaker Walton, and great-grandparents Everett and Clara Whitaker.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August, 22, at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Paul Hagerman officiating with burial in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday and after 8:00 a.m. Friday.

Pallbearers will be Terry Barnett, Ricky Satterly, Scott Walton, Steve Walton, Danny Waldridge and Lynn Hardin. Honorary bearers will be Eddie Satterly, Nicholas Satterly, Josh Hardin, Vernon Courtney, Michael Perry and Truman Trent.

ARNOLD NICHOLS

Arnold Chatham Nichols, 81, of Chapel House, Louisville, died Thursday, August 14, 2003.

Born September 13, 1921 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Estelle Vandiver and Arnold T. Nichols.

He was a motor machinist mate in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was a model maker/machinist, retired from American Saw and Tool.

He was an active member of Clifton Christian Church and served as Sunday School treasurer, deacon, church clerk and trustee.

Survivors include: his wife, Norma Sacra Nichols, Louisville; two daughters, Nell (John) Ward, New Bern, NC; Nancy (Allen) Halverson, Lancaster; one son, Lee (Darlene) Nichols, Rockwall, TX; one sister, Lucile Nichols, Largo, FL; one brother, Howard (Virginia) Nichols, Harrodsburg; a sister-in-law, Thelma Nichols, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Nichols, and two grandsons, Joshua Halverson and Troy Nichols.

He donated his body to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. A celebration of his life was held Sunday, August 17, at Clifton Christian Church.

Memorials are suggested to Christian Church Homes of Kentucky – Louisville, The Cumberland Building, 12700 Shelbyville Road #1000, Louisville, KY 40243.

Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home, Louisville, was in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPH POLSGROVE

Joseph Sandusky Polsgrove, 65, of Lexington, died January 9, 2003 as a result of the crash of his private aircraft in Grafton, IL.

Born March 6, 1937 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late David and Ruth Sandusky Beall and James H. Polsgrove, Jr.

He was a graduate of Transylvania University and was a veteran of the U. S. Air force having served as pilot and navigator in the NORAD defense system and had also served in the Air Force Reserve.

He had worked as chief engineer for WLEX-TV in the 1950s and 60s and was a development engineer for IBM in Lexington, retiring in 1992.

He was also active in the Experimental Aircraft Association and Young Eagles program.

Survivors include: his wife, Janet Polsgrove, Lexington; one son, Joseph S. Polsgrove II; and a granddaughter, Haley M. Polsgrove, both of NC.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 23, at the Crossroads Christian Church, 4190 Todds Road, Lexington. A reception will follow the service.

Memorials are suggested to the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 169, c/o John Hufford, 1200 E. Hickman Road, Nicholasville, KY 40356-9399.
