HARRIETTE BUTLER

Harriette Ann Reed Butler, 82, Edmonton, widow of Stanley Butler, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the Metcalfe County Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 8, 1921 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Field and Myrtie Mae Woodard Reed.

She was a retired school teacher and a member of the Edmonton Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Jimmy (Laurie) Butler of Edmonton, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ann Reed Butler, and one brother, Jack Reed.

The funeral was held Friday, May 14 at the Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in the Edmonton Cemetery.

ZOLEMA FAIN

Zolema H. Fain, 82, Elmwood Drive, died Monday, May 17, 2004 at her residence.

Born April 7, 1922 in Harlan County, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Martha Jane Long Howard.

She was a graduate of Loyall High School and the Bissell Business College in Harlan. She was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church where she was active in the Adult Women’s Sunday School class.

Survivors include: one daughter, Trula (Ernest) Arnett of Mercer County; two grandchildren, Ernest Tyrone Arnett and Donna Sue McGrath; one great-grandchild, Amber McGrath, and a number of cousins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Louie H. Howard.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday, May 19 at the Mount Pleasant Mortuary in Harlan with Eastern Star services prior to the funeral service. Burial was in the Resthaven Cemetery in Harlan.

Local arrangements were handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

JULIUS HUNGATE

Julius Hungate, 84, Mackville Road, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born, Aug. 19, 1919 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Henry and Cordelia Tyler Hungate.

He was a graduate of Rose Hill High School and Eastern Kentucky University. He was a retired teacher for the Mercer County school system after 45 years, was an avid artist, musician, and fisherman. He was a member of the BrunerÕs Chapel Baptist Church where he also served as a choir member.

Survivors include: one sister, Virgie Vandivier of Mercer County; one nephew, Barry Vandivier of Mercer County, and a number of cousins.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, May 15 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Greg Humpert officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Larry Camic, Darryl Catlett, Mike Camic, Brian Stewart, John Harlow and Brent Steel.

Honorary bearers were members of his Sunday School class at Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church, Fred Purvis and Kermit Logue.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Gideons International, P.O. Box 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

RUEL LAY

Ruel T. Lay, 86, Robards Court, husband of Virginia Devine Lay, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at his residence.

Born Sept. 1, 1917 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Floris and Eva Turner Lay.

He was a retired employee of Corning Glass Works, Inc. where he worked in the machine shop. He was a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Gary (Pat) Lay of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Janice (Don Billy) Yates, Brenda Bradford and Sherri Lay, all of Harrodsburg; one step-daughter, Janice Vaught of Danville; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren, and two nephews.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, May 20 at 2 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Revs. Mike West and Kenneth Whitehouse officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Don Jr. and Dale Yates, Jeff Noel, Justin, Branden and Chris Lay.

Honorary bearers will be Lawrence Peavler, Butch Merchant, Marvin Claunch, Marvin Robinson, Truman Curtsinger and Johnny Bailey.

Visitation Wednesday after 5 p.m. and Thursday after 7:30 a.m. at the chapel.

MAURICE LESTER

Maurice F. Lester, 86, East Lexington Street, husband of Margaret Carr Lester, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born March 12, 1918 in Mercer County, he was a son of the late William and Chloe Riley Lester.

He owned and operated Lester's Service Station for several years, was a school bus driver for the Mercer County school system, a carpenter, mechanic and worked in the cooperage at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. He was a member of the Bruner's Chapel Baptist Church where he was a deacon for over 40 years and a trustee for several years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Jo Anne (J.W.) Logue of Harrodsburg, and Doris (Billy Ray) Thompson of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Hanley, Hollis, Harley and Hershel Lester, and two sisters, Elsie Farney and Olive Nichols.

The funeral was conducted Monday, May 17 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. Greg Humpert and Bro. Jack Geurin officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kevin C. Logue, Joe O. Walters, Bobby M. Thompson, Thomas Aldridge, Jay Walters, Dane Thomas Aldridge, Jack Logue, Lorrie Walters and Jennifer Aldridge.

Honorary bearers were Bill Lester, Carlos Lester, Lynn Nichols, Nolen Nichols and Earl Kent Nichols

ANN McDUFFEY

Ann Elizabeth Dalton McDuffey, 86, Russell Street, Burgin, widow of William Franklin McDuffey, died Saturday May 15, 2004 at her residence.

Born March 7, 1918 in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late John and Jannie Cinnamon Dalton.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church. She was lovingly known as the “Grandma of Burgin Fire Department.”

Survivors include: two daughters, Ella Mae James and Judy Horton, both of Burgin; one sister, Lola Smith of Burgin; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday, May 17, 2004 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lester Tirey officiating. Burial was in Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Martin Gray, Billy Crank, Chris Adams, Pete Motto, and David, Chris and Jonathan Smith.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Burgin Fire Department, P.O. Box 94, Burgin, KY 40310.

VIRGINIA ROYALTY

Virginia Royalty, 92, Rose Street, Lexington, formerly of Mercer County, widow of Clyde Royalty, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Nov. 3, 1911 in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Hopkins Prater.

She was a homemaker and attended the Bluegrass Baptist Church in Lexington.

Survivors include: one step-granddaughter, Johnetta (Rick) Grant of Lexington.

The funeral will be conducted Friday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at the Kirkwood Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Jerel Coffey officiating. Burial will be in the Kirkwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

No visitation.

Arrangements are being handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

ELIJAH BRYANT

Elijah Bryant, 84, Akron, OH, husband of Mildred Bryant, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 after a long illness.

Born May 28, 1919 in Harrodsburg, he was a son of the late George and Lina Coffee Bryant.

He was employed at Gateway Groceries for five years before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Baptist Church in Akron and of the church’s Brotherhood.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Steven (Jane) Bryant of Versailles; two daughters, Charlotte (Andy) Harris and Phyllis (David) Yates, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, John Bryant of Louisville; one sister, Marie Hunn of Harrodsburg; three stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews, and cousins.

The funeral was held Tuesday, May 25 at the Prince of Peace Baptist Church in Akron with Rev. John Milton Burrell officiating. Burial was at Glendale Cemetery in Akron.

Arrangements were handled by the Stewart and Calhoun Funeral Home in Akron.
