THELMA GILLIS

Thelma Kathryn Baugh Gillis, 88, of Glensboro Road, Lawrenceburg, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at the Beverly Health and Rehab Center in Frankfort.

Born August 8, 1918 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Kent and Robert Paris Baugh. She was the widow of Gilbert Gillis.

She was a former employee with Huffman Distillery in Anderson County, a member of the Corinth Christian Church and the Lady’s Circle.

She is survived by: one son, Billy (Darlene) Gillis, Lawrenceburg; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Beasley Gillis, Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren, Ricky (Laura) Gillis, Randy (Kim) Gillis, all of Lawrenceburg, Jamie Gillis, Frankfort, Bobby Joe (Becky) Gillis, Harrodsburg, Angie (Ricky) Bast, Salvisa; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Buckley, Lawrenceburg.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Ray Gillis, a grandson, Tony Gillis; three sisters, Trecia Redman, Laccie Carlton, and Nellie Mae Baugh; and five brothers, Sam Baugh, Cecil Baugh, Richard Baugh, Paul Baugh and Archie Baugh.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 25, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg, with Bro. Gene Koons and Bro. Matt Sawyer officiating. Burial will be in the Corinth Cemetery in Anderson County.

Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Corinth Cemetery Fund, 1011 Corinth Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.

RUTH HUFFMAN

Ruth Hawkins Huffman, 82 of Boone Trail, Danville died Tuesday November 21, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born May 27, 1924 in Woodlawn, she was the daughter of the late Bert S. and Irene Potorf Hawkins and the widow of Harold Huffman.

She worked in the War Department in Washington, DC for four years during WW II, she was a bookkeeper for Sellers & Sellers and a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Gary Huffman, Belleville, IL; two daughters, Kay Huffman, Danville, and Heidi Yates, Harrodsburg; one brother, Bert Hawkins, St. Paul, MN; one sister, Thalia Gregory, AZ; and five grandchildren, John, Mary and Stephen Huffman and Michael and Amanda Yates.

A graveside service was held Friday, November 24, at Bellevue Cemetery, Danville, by Rev. Quentin Scholtz.

Honorary pallbearers were Jack Pattie, Bill Peniston, Tom Sellers and Donald Spoonamore.

The family request memorials be sent to Gideon International.

Stith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET LOWERY
Margaret Ruth Vaughn Lowery, 94, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 13, 1911 in Georgetown, she was the daughter of the late William and Rose Bell Henry Vaughn, and was the widow of Eddie Lee Lowery.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Cornishville Christian Church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, James and Joseph Vaughn, and one sister, Rosa Mae Vaughn Martin.

Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 28 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Leonard Price and Bro. Paul Readnour officiating. Burial was in the Cornishville Christian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Elwood Collier, Darren Sims, Terry Coslow, Roger Atwell, Archie Britton and Hughes Coslow.

Honorary pallbearers were Bonnie Mae Sartin, Arzie Byrd, Maxine Byrd and Emanuel J. Rodoussakis.

DAVID RICHIE
David W. Richie, 67, of Paradise Camp Road, Harrodsburg, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 at his home.

Born Aug. 18, 1939 in Hazard, he was the son of the late Elmer and Gertrude Fields Ritchie, and was husband of Nona L. Flynn Ritchie.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was an industrial psychologist for IBM, Inc. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Christian Church. He loved to read, was an avid University of Kentucky fan and was a Civil War historian.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Leslie (James) Worley and Laura (Brad) Clem, both of Lancaster; two sons, David Mark (Mary) Richie of Goshen and Wesley K. Richie of Lexington; one sister, Jaynie Richie; one brother, John Richie; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held today, Thursday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Greg Warren officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral chapel Thursday from noon until the hour of service.

Pallbearers will be Stephanie Richie, Abbey Worley, Dylon Worley, Jacob Worley, Hunter Clem, Hannah Clem, Alyssa Richie, Amber Richie, Emma Richie and Kyle Walters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carpenter’s Christian Church or to the Mercer County Public Library.

ROBERT SADLER
Robert Lee Sadler, 76, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 2, 1930 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James and Mattie Anderson Sadler, and was the husband of Loretta Reeves Sheperson Sadler.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean war. He was a retired electrician for Corning, Inc., and was a member of Eller’s Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Becky (Chuck) McKinney of Harrodsburg; two sons, Sam (Pam) Sadler and Neil Sadler, both of Harrodsburg; one brother, George Sadler of Louisville; six grandchildren, Lee, Clay, Charlie, Cody, JoHannah and Samantha; one step-grandchild, Chris, and one great-grandchild, Levi.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lulia Lester, Ruth Turner and Elizabeth Merriman, and two brothers, Elmore and Campbell Sadler.

Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 27 at Spring Hill Cemetery with Bill Wickersham officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Life Center, 108 S. Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

LUCILLE WAFFORD

Lucille Cox Wafford, 90, widow of Robert Brown Wafford, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at the Central Baptist Hospital.

Born in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Onis Abb and Annabel Hahn Cox.

She was a homemaker and a member of NorthEast Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Ann (Robert) Spaulding, Lexington; granddaughters, Lori Turner (Chuck) Bowen, and their children Braeden & Brinlee Bowen, and Missy Turner (Thomas) Browning, and their son Jacob Browning, all of Lexington; also survived by Phillip Brown Wafford, Salvisa, and Raymond Wafford, Louisville; and two sisters, Ileta Puckett, and Ruth Stanley, both of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin "Wimpy" Cox, and a sister, Marjorie Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Main Street by Pastor Ron Camblin. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Visitation will be gtom 5-8 p.m. Monday.

Contributions are suggested to NorthEast Christian Church Building Fund, 990 Star Shoot Parkway, Lexington, KY 40509.

ELIZABETH ABT
Elizabeth Catherine Link Schuler Abt, 92, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Waynesburg, died Friday, December 1, 2006.

Born October 3, 1914 in Somerset, she was the daughter of the late William and Constancia Arnold link. She was the widow of Joseph Albert Schuler and Charles Abt.

She was a member of the St. Sylvester Catholic Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mary C. Baker, Harrodsburg; one son, Joseph Anthony and wife Sharon of Memphis, IN; one daughter-in-law, Betty Schuler, Waynesburg; one sister, Pauline Williams, Elmhurst, IL; 15 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph Albert Schuler and Charles Abt, son, William "Bill" Schuler; sisters, Mary C. Clements, Matilda J. Knapp, Lucille M. Mackey, Johanna M. Lawrence, Theresa M. Farrell; brothers, William Link, Theadore E. Link, Bernard Link, William Theodore Link and Herbert F. Link

Pallbearers will be William "Buddy" Schuler, Mike Schuler, Thomas Schuler, Greg Whitenack, Charles Whitenack, Joe Schuler and Jimmy Schuler.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at the St. Sylvester Catholic Church with Father Thobias Sabariar officiating. Burial will be in St. Sylvester Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Monday, December 4, 2006 at the St. Sylvester Catholic Church with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

McKnight Funeral Home, Crab Orchard is in charge of arrangements.

STUART ALEXANDER

Stuart E. Alexander Jr., 86, of Louisville, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Dec. 1, 2006.

Born Sept. 16, 1920 in Lexington, he was the husband of Ruth Hurst Alexander.

He grew up in Harrodsburg and was educated at Centre College and the University of Louisville School of Law. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served as a B-17 pilot during World War II. He was a senior partner in the Louisville law firm of Tilford, Dobbins, Alexander, Buckaway and Black. He was a volunteer and board member of the Catholic School Board, the Louisville Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Louisville and the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. He loved music, literature, travel and the arts and was to receive a master’s degree in spirituality from Bellarmine University in May 2007.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Stuart E. (Peg) Alexander III; two daughters, Mary Alexander (John Downard) and Martha Alexander; one sister, Cordelia Kubale, and five grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 5 at St. Boniface Church in Louisville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nativity Academy of St. Boniface or to the Chamber Music Society of Louisville.

The Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home in Louisville was in charge of arrangements.

GARNETT ASHFORD
Garnett Ashford, 92, of Main Street, Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Nov. 7, 1914 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James and Annie Kurtz Ashford, and was the widower of Ruby Marksbury Ashford.

He was a retired farmer and had been a broommaker at Shaker Village. He was a member of the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and was a member of the Men’s Group.

Survivors include: two sons, Marvin (Janet) Ashford of Harrodsburg and Charles (Jolene) Ashford of Nicholasville; two daughters, Becky Tyler of Louisville and Joyce (Jim) Gash of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Cora Ratliff of Lexington and Eva Lay of Harrodsburg; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hyte, James and Forrest Ashford.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

JAMES BALL

James Delbert Ball, 78, of Delbert Ball Road died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born April 1, 1928 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Ernest Ball and Chloe Sherrow Ball. He was retired from Cowden Mfg. Co after 34 years, a retired farmer and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Combs Ball; a brother, Donald (Juanita) Ball, Harrodsburg; a sister, Ruby Clevenger, Richmond, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lorene Wilson, Elizabeth Hurt and Ruth Clark.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Spurlin Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. David Smoot. Burial was in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearer were Steve Clark, Steve Combs, David Ball, Charles Clevenger, John duff, and Gareth Lane.

Honorary pallbearers were Horace and Lee Sharp, Paul Drew, Bobby Dietrich, Billy Nevius and officers of the Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

NANCY HATFIELD
Nancy Woods Hatfield, 81, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born Sept. 23, 1925 in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late Archie T. and Bertha Noland Woods, and was the wife of William C. Hatfield.

As a result of the depression of 1929, the family moved to Harrodsburg where her father opened a hardware store known as the Big Store. She was a graduate of Harrodsburg High School, Centre College and the St. Joseph School of Medical Technology in Louisville. She was employed as a medical technologist in the offices of Dr. James M. Kinsman, The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, Dr. J. E. Myers, Dr. Richard Hench, Dr. John Perrine, Dr. Adrian Fulmer and Dr. John Borders of Lexington. She was the organist for the Harrodsburg United Methodist Church and taught piano while in Harrodsburg. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington where she served as a deacon, choir member, Sunday School teacher, Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and as one of their needlepoint stitchers.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: two sons, William C. (Carol) Hatfield Jr. and Thomas (Cynthia) Hatfield; four grandchildren, Alison S., Lane B., Lindsey L. and Taylor A. Hatfield, and one great-grandchild, Ellie G. Hatfield.

She was preceded in death by one son, Sean C. Hatfield, and one sister, Louise W. Rice.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery with Steve Palmer officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main Street, Lexington, KY 40507.

Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

MARGIE LARGE
Margie Large, 89, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Waynesburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at her home.

Born June 19, 1917 in Letcher County, she was the daughter of Nehemiah and Cora Day Eldridge, and was the widow of Jesse Large.

She was a homemaker and quilter, was a nurses aid for many local nursing homes, and was a member of the Friendship Old Regular Baptist Church in Waynesburg.

Survivors include: two daughters, Sue (George) Hendrix of Harrodsburg and Lula (Jerry) Bartel of Cincinnati, OH; two brothers, Joe Eldridge of Havasu City, AZ, and Arnold Eldridge of Davenport, FL; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Vilas, Preston, Roy and Hargis Eldridge, and three sisters, Vergie Caudill, Alta Holland and Liza Cox.

Services were held Friday, Dec. 1 at the Friendship Old Regular Baptist Church with Bros. Emery Caudill and Squire Watts officiating. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Waynesburg.

Pallbearers were Doug Hendrix, Rick Back, Steve Back, Brandon and Wesley Harmon, Kipp Ballard, Jesse Back and Zackary Barlow.

Memorials contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Friendship Old Regular Baptist Church.

Barnett and Demrow Funeral Home in Waynesburg was in charge of arrangements.

ALICE RENTAS
Alice Elizabeth Adkins Rentas, 84, of Perryville, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006.

Born April 25, 1922 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Aleck Norman and Lillian Strange Adkins.

She was a retired 29-year employee of the American Mutual Insurance Company in Lexington and was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Maureen Young of Harrodsburg; one son, Anthony Rentas of Perryville; one sister, Callie Inman of Springfield; two brothers, Raymond Adkins of Boyle County and James T. Adkins of Mitchellsburg; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville with the Revs. Brian Ebel and Keith Katterheinrich officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery in Washington County.

Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.

RAYMOND RUSSELL

Raymond Lee Russell, 90, formerly of Cavalcade Drive, Danville, died Thursday November 30, 2006 at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

Born May 30, 1916, in Casey County, he was a son of the late Oatly L. and Ollie Jeffers Russell. He was the widower of Janetta Russell.

He was superintendent of the old federal building in Danville. He was a member of Lexington Avenue Church of Christ and a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Sterett.

Survivors include: one daughter, Sandy Watts, Danville; one son, Joe Gerlach, Harrodsburg; one sister, Ruth Coleman, Clearwater, FL; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 4, at the Stith Funeral Home, Danville, by Rev. Scott Vifquain and Rev. Steve Wolfgang. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe Dale Gerlach, Ronnie Hardwick, Wayne Thurman, Harold Godbey, Tom Cummins, John Sims, Bobby Newby and Terry Graham.

Honorary pallbearers are elders and deacons of Lexington Avenue Church of Christ, and Earl Adams, Cecil Ellis, Tom Hollon, Hubert Royalty, Bill Royalty and LeRoy Johnson.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may go to Heritage Hospice.
