WILLIE BOTTOMS
Willie Monzo “Jack Rabbit” Bottoms, 72, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1933 in Cornishville, he was the son of the late Roy and Clora Yeaste Bottoms.

He was a well known world champion roadster horse trainer and exhibitor having worked for the Freeman Brothers Stables in Harrodsburg for many years. In a career that spans almost six decades, Bottoms had many accomplishments in the show ring and as a trainer. Except for under saddle classes, horses trained by Bottoms have won every road horse class at the World Championship Horse Show.

In 1990, he was inducted into the American Road Horse and Pony Hall of Fame and is the only African American man in the hall of fame.

A favorite in the local show ring for many years, he was inducted into the Mercer County Fair and Horse Show Hall of Fame this past summer.

He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Centennial Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors include: two brothers, R. C. “Ike” Bottoms of Wilmore and Fred Bottoms of Harrodsburg; one sister, Mary Bottoms Moore of Lexington, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 9 at the Harrods-burg Baptist Church with Pastor J.D. Short III officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery with military rites.

Pallbearers were James Dean, Jerry Mobley, David Yoder, Glen Walker, Danny Bugg and Chris Short.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Powell, Sam Stafford, Raymond Shively, James Williams, James Bryant and Jim Pittman.

Parks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

LELA BRUMBACK
Lela F. Brumback, 76, of Mooreland Avenue, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at the Williamson Medical Center in Franklin, TN.

Born Sept. 3, 1929 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ethel VanArsdall Peavler and the widow of Elder Brumback Jr.

She was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. She retired after having worked at Kroger for 42 years. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with others, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include: three daughters, Toni (Robert) Brumback-Preston and Cherie Lynn (Robert) Clark, both of Harrodsburg, and Tammie (Stephen) Brumback Mann of Nashville, TN; three sisters, Imogene (James) Carey of Harrodsburg, Doris (Don) Freeman and Elizabeth Disponett, both of Lexington; five grandchildren and one aunt.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, J. P. Peavler.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Dr. Robert DeFoor, the Rev. Wayne Smith and Rob Clark officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Davis, Jim Underwood, J. W. Logue, Andrew Alexander, John Wayne Peavler and Freddie Peavler.

Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Clark, and Ryan and Sean Mann.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, P.O. Box 286, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

HARVEY DUNCAN
Harvey D. Duncan, 82, of Harrodsburg, died Jan. 3, 2006.

Born Oct. 13, 1923 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Jesse L. and Mary Preston Duncan and the husband of Juanita Carter Duncan.

He was a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving as deacon, trustee, treasurer, song leader and teacher. He served three years in the South Pacific in the United States Army during World War II. He was a farmer, carpenter and avid fisherman. He retired from the E.W. Brown Power Plant after 25 years of employment.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: three daughters, Brenda (Bill) Ray and Sherri Williams, both of Harrodsburg, and Pat (Ronnie) Short of Junction City; one son, Donnie (Kathy) Duncan of Harrods-burg; one brother, Bill Duncan of Nicholasville; one granddaughter whom he raised, Tammy (Eddie) Jenkins of Harrodsburg; nine other grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Shawnee Run Baptist Church with Bros. Ralph Neal and Lester Tirey officiating. Burial was in Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Earl Campbell, Jeff Loane, Mike and Darryl Kestel, and Steve and Brad Duncan.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Kestel, Scottie Anderson, Harold Moore, Kenny Carey, Clifford Houp, George Ellers, Harold Hullette, Charlie Robinson, Donnie Webb and Gene Motley.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Family Life Center Building Fund, c/o Shawnee Run Baptist Church, 1486 Shakertown Road, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

WILLIAM GRIFFIN

William Terry Griffin Jr., 60, of Danville, died Saturday, January 7, 2005 at his home.

Born September 1, 1945, in Lexington, he was a son of the late William T. and Carrie Chase Reynolds Griffin.

He was an associate for Sherwin Williams and self-employed. He was a member of First Christian Church and a graduate of Danville High School and Georgetown College.

Survivors include: a daughter, Cora L. Young, Harrodsburg; two brothers, Chad Stewart, Phoenix, AZ, and Christian Stewart, Cincinnati, OH; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, at Stith Funeral Home, Danville.

Memorials may go to First Christian Church building fund.

BOBBY MEEKS

Bobby S. Meeks, 61, of Chestnut Level Ridge, Liberty, died Friday, January 6, 2005 at his residence.

Born Sept.. 28, 1944, in Gilpin, he was the son of the late Raymond and Hollis Patterson Meeks.

He was a material handler for Square D Company and an Army veteran of Vietnam.

Survivors include: his wife, Ruth Yates Meeks; a daughter, Mona Martin, Somerset; a son, Jesse Meeks, Berea; four brothers, Lewis Meeks, Harrodsburg, Glen Meeks, Greensburg, Homer Meeks, Somerset, and Billy Meeks, Greensburg, IN; a sister, Ruth Catron of Greensburg, IN; and five grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, January 9, at Bartle Funeral Home by James D. McDonald. Burial will be in South Fork Cemetery with military rites by Casey County Funeral Squad.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday.

EDNA MILLER
Edna Pearl Miller, 92, of Kent, OH, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, OH.

Born June 27, 1913 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late John and Pearl Myrtle Worley Curd and the widow of Joseph Emerson “Spook” Miller.

She was a member of the Mission Baptist Temple in Stow, OH.

Survivors include: dear friends Kathy McVicker of Kent, OH, and Carol and Kenny Shope of Westover, PA, two nieces and four nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ann Gardner, Mary Bonta and Dora Marakovich.

Funeral services are being held today, Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home in Ravenna, OH, with the Rev. David T. Lanum officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent, OH.

MATTIE MURRAY
Mattie P. Murray, 85, of 830 North College St., died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006 at The James. B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born May 6, 1920 in Beattyville, she was the daughter of the late George W. Pendergrass Sr. and the late Alma McDonald Pendergrass Clinton and was the widow of R. L. Murray Sr.

Along with her husband, she had owned and operated the Kentucky Food Store in Beattyville for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Waco Baptist Church, the Boonesboro Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Patti A. Clay Women’s Auxiliary, the Cavanaugh Homemakers, and she was a past president of the Richmond Woman’s Club.

Survivors include: two sons, Dr. Roderic L. (Jennie) Murray III of Nashville, TN and James Paul (Robin) Murray Sr. of Harrodsburg; two brothers, George W. Pendergrass of Missouri and Ernest Pender-grass of California; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she and was preceded in death by one brother, James Paul Pendergrass, and one grandson, Jonathan Lee Murray.

Graveside services will be held today, Thursday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Beattyville with Dr. James McCarroll officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.

RONAL SHARP
Ronal E. Sharp, 68, of Stanford, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at the Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville.

Born Jan. 17, 1937 in Russell Springs, he was the son of the late Charles Sharp and Elizabeth Kimble Sharp of Russell Springs and the husband of Danna Cornelius Sharp.

He was formerly a part of the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company in Danville, a part owner of First Quality Mobile Homes in Casey County, and in 1974, he started Bluegrass Mobile Homes in Sanford. He was the past director of the Kentucky Manufactured Housing Institute.

He had also been a member of the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Walking Horse Association and the National Commission of Walking Horses. He was a Mason and a member of the Stanford Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include: one son, Ronnie (Paula) Sharp of Stanford; two daughters, Judy Burton and Beth Sharp, both of Stanford; one step-daughter, Amy Davis of Liberty; one brother, Donal Sharp of Waco, TX; four grandchildren, and one step-grandchild.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, Jan. 7 at Fox Funeral Home in Stanford with Rev. Dale Denton officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Sammy Martin, Dr. Sam Reid, Lee Burton, Doug Aaron, Kenton Harper, Rodney Rice, Reid Harrod and Gordon Montgomery.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Sims, George and H. R. “Short” Saufley, John Hukle, Dr. Elmer True, Dr. Bobby Fowler, Bobby Robbins, Earl Dean McWhorter and past and present employees of Bluegrass Mobile Homes.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St., New York, NY 10005-4001.

GOLDIE STUMPH
Goldie Stumph, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1910 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Claudia Yocum Cornish and the widow of Thomas Stumph.

She had worked at the Commodity House and Arnold’s Florist and Greenhouse and was a farmer and a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include: one sister, Dorothy Martin of Danville; one sister-in-law, Ina Cornish of Harrodsburg; two grandchildren, Kathleen Luttrell of Harrodsburg and Tom Drury of Lexington; one great-granddaughter, Victoria Ever-man; six nieces, one nephew, and friend and caretaker, John Burks of Harrodsburg.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Dale Stumph; one brother, William Cornish, and one sister, Tava Hendren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Dan Stoltzfus officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Matherly, Larry Yeager, Bobby Parsons, Todd Warner and Jim and Jamie Dunn.

JOHN WANSINK
Florentius John Wansink, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 at Legacy House in Ocala, FL.

Born Feb. 12, 1927 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he was the son of the late Arnold and Christina Marks Wansink and the husband of Gladys Luttrell Wansink.

He was a real estate broker. When he first came to America, he owned and operated a bakery in New York City for several years. He served in the Dutch Navy and was a private pilot. He was a member of the Baptist Faith and the AOP Flying Club in Florida.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one step-daughter, Wanda (Ricky) Click of Harrodsburg.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Jan. 8 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Lewis Walter officiating.

ALVIN WASHBURN

Alvin C. Washburn, 77, of 447 Duell Dr., Versailles died Monday, Jan 9 at the Hospice Care Center, Lexington.

Born December 29, 1928 at Bethlehem in Henry County, he was a son of the late Eddie and Daisy Adler Washburn. a retired carpenter, He was the widower of Edna Washburn.

He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include: one daughter, Dennise Washburn and her friend, John Ward, Versailles two sons, Eddie (Bonnie) Washburn, Salvisa, Darrell Washburn, Cape Coral, FL; three grandchildren, Joseph Washburn, Brittany Washburn, and Josh Washburn; three sisters, Edith Washburn, Newcastle, Flossie Washburn, Louisville, Annie Tingle, LaGrange; and one brother Raymond Washburn, Henry County.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 12 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday, January 11 at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

WILLIAM ALFORD

William C. Alford, 84, of Trumansburg, NY, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at Hospice Comfort Care in Ithaca, NY.

Born Oct. 1, 1921 in Danville, he was the son of the late George and Sadie Miller Alford and the husband of Mary Jackie Alford.

He attended Burgin High School and enlisted in the Kentucky National Guard in 1939. He was inducted into federal service in November of 1940 along with the National Guard Company stationed at Harrodsburg. He served four years overseas with the 192nd Tank Battalion and was taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1942. He survived the Bataan Death March and three and a half years as a prisoner of war. After the war, he returned to Kentucky and received several awards and citations including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Presidential Citation. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was discharged in 1946. He later moved to Trumansburg, NY, where he was associated with the Chevrolet dealership for 27 years. He was a life member of the Arthur E. Bouton American Legion Post #770, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #961, the Disabled American Veterans NY2 and the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, survivors include: one son, David (Helen) Alford of Trumansburg, NY; one daughter, Judy (Chester) Houseworth of Ithaca, NY; two brothers, Robert (Frances) Alford and John (Ollie) Alford, both of Harrodsburg; one sister, Nancy (Fritz) McElfresh of Danville; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with full military honors will be scheduled for a later date.

The Ness-Sibley Funeral Home in Trumansburg, NY is in charge of arrangements.

JUDY BAKER
Judy A. Jenkins Baker, 59, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006 at Audubon Hospital in Louisville.

A native of Mercer County, she was the daughter of Franklin and Eva Proctor Jenkins and the wife of Larry Baker.

She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Shepherdsville and a retired certified medical technician of the Nazareth Home.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one son, Chris Baker; one brother, James Jenkins; one sister, Edna Kiper, and two grandchildren, Alex and Candice Baker.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 14 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial was in Brookland Cemetery in Shepherdsville.
