Kentucky Marriage Records by County

ERNEST SAMPSON

Ernest L. Sampson Jr., 87, Danville Road, died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at his residence.

Born October 21, 1914 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Ernest and Eva Brown Sampson, Sr. He was the widower of Sadie McRay Sampson.

He was a retired farmer and attended Dry Branch Baptist Church.

He was a veteran of World War II and had served with the 192nd Tank Battalion where he survived the Bataan Death March and some three and one-half years as a prisoner of war. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include: two sons, J. L. Sampson, Campbellsville, E. Ernest Sampson, Harrodsburg; one brother, W. N. Sampson, Harrodsburg; two sisters, Sarah Walden Sampson, Louisville, Imogene Richoff, Seattle, WA; three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 4, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with CH (CPT) Julian L. Padget officiating. Burial with military rites was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were J. L. and Ernest Sampson and David Taylor.

MILITARY RITES

Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Military Rites for Roy Sanders at Spring Hill Cemetery on November 27, 2001.

Those attending were Roy Freeman, Joe Harlow, Preston Burgin, James Tewmey, Lucian Landers, Howard Howells and Tom Denny.

William Gravely served as bugler.

MILITARY RITES
Douglas Laws Post #52, American Legion, Post #6935, VFW and DAV Post #54 conducted Military Rites for James B. Huff at Spring Hill Cemetery on November 28, 2001.

Those attending were Roy Freeman, James Tewmey, Marion Mershon, Tom Denny, Preston Burgin, Joe Harlow and Howard Howells.

William Gravely served as bugler.

MARGARET CAREY

Margaret T. Carey, 77, 298 Dix Dam Road, died Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born July 9, 1924 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late George M. and Athena Votaw Champion. She was the widow of William Andy Carey.

She was retired from Mercer Dress and was a member of the Burgin Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Georgie Anne (Granville) Sherrow, Burgin; two sons, Ronald (Shirley) Carey, Concord, NC, Kenneth A. (Judy) Carey, Burgin; three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 9, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. James Heard officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steward Horne, Scott Hulette, James Allen Motley, Harvey Duncan, Rex Dawson, Stanley Riney, Clifford Houp and Orland Webb.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Burgin Baptist Church, PO Box 266, Burgin, KY 40310 or to one’s favorite charity.

JOHN ESTES

John Russell Estes, 77, of Ferguson Road, Lexington, died Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born April 15, 1924 in Danville, he was the son of the late Edward B. and Grace Cosby Estes.

He was the former owner of John Estes Plumbing and Heating in Lexington and a member of the Salem Church of Christ in Harrison County.

Survivors include: his wife, Ivaline Rogers Estes, Lexington; two sons, Jack (Dolores) Estes, Jerry W. (Janice) Price, both of Lexington; two brothers, Walter Estes, Dothan AL, Edward Estes, Jr., Lexington; two sisters, Lorene Fryman, Cynthiana, Ruth Clark, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Turner, Susie Estes and Eudina Fryman.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 8, at Ware Funeral Home in Cynthiana with Bro. Scott Winkler officiating. Burial was in the Battle Grove Cemetery.

BIRDIE GRIGSBY

Birdie Lee Grigsby, 74, of 348 South Danville Street, Burgin, died Sunday, December 9, 2001 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born October 25, 1927 in Sarasota, FL, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Evelyn Wyeth Gillis, Sr. She was the widow of Charles Leslie Grigsby.

She had worked at Cricketeer in Harrodsburg and Johnathon Logan in Burgin.

She was a 1975 graduate of Danville School of Nursing, a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and a member of the Burgin Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, John C. Grigsby, Stanford, one brother, John R. Gillis, Jr., Dandridge, TN; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Private memorial services were held Tuesday, December 11, at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with pastor Lonnie Daugherty officiating.

Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

JANICE JONES
Janice Yates Jones, 54, W. Office Street, died Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born June 12, 1947 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of Rosalind Yates, Harrodsburg, and the late Lucian Yates, Jr.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a choir member.

She was an LPN, a graduate of Kentucky School of Nursing and a former nurse at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. She was a housekeeper and Eaton employee. She was an avid UK basketball fan.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include: her husband, William Jones, Harrodsburg; two sons, Kevin Jones, Harrodsburg, Jason Jones, Lexington; two daughters, Janet Jones and Cindy Jones, both of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Rev. Phillip (Jeanie) Yates, Harrodsburg, Lucian (Vietta) Yates, and David (Phyllis) Yates; one sister, Betsy Y. Napier, Harrodsburg; four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucretia Ann Yates.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 8, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Virgil Hill and Rev. M. L. Trabue officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Andre Jones, Harry Napier, Cappy Wheeler, Ricky Jones, Walter Harrison and Phillip VanDyke.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARY McCLOUD

Mary Lee McCloud, 79, of Louisville, formerly of Ocklawoha, FL, died Saturday, December 8, 2001 at Norton Audubon Hospital.

Born September 22, 1922 in Seco, KY, she was the daughter of the late Webb and Mattie Bell Basham Kiser. She was the widow of Roscoe W. McCloud.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include: three daughters, Jeanette Thompson, Beverly Willhite and Lynn Cone; two sons, Robert W. and Kenneth D. McCloud; one sister, Patsy Walters; one brother, Danny Kiser; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 11, at the Resthaven Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Road in Louisville. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Wesley Manor Retirement Center.

ZELMA McKINNEY

Zelma McKinney, 93, of McAfee Lane, Salvisa, died Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.

Born February 12, 1908 in Washington County, she was the daughter of James Henry and Plummie Dennis Dean. She was the widow of Fred McKinney.

She was a homemaker and a member of Salvisa Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter-in-law, Lillie McKinney, Salvisa; one grandson, Mike McKinney, Lexington; two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jack McKinney and a grandson, David Joe McKinney.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 10, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Koch and Rev. Jason Clark officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were deacons of Salvisa Baptist Church.

Memorials are suggested to Salvisa Baptist Church.

HENRY SMITH

Henry Nelson Smith, 95, of 619 Cane Run Street, died Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born October 2, 1906 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Goley and Ada Lee Barnett Smith.

He had worked for Shawnee Farm and was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

He is survived by a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Smith Adams.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 10, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Don Chase officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Genie Sims, Bruce Goodlett, Greg Souder, Don Long, Bob Patton and David Taylor.
