VIRGIE ISHAM

Virgie Lee Isham, 96, Northern Goshawk Dr., Columbus, IN, widow of Leo Isham, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at her home.

Born Dec. 20, 1907 in Mackville, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Lillie Taylor Smock.

She was retired from Handmocker, Inc. in Lebanon where she was a seamstress and was a former Bell Telephone Co. employee in Mackville. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a former member of the Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Survivors include: one daughter, Roxie Russell of Columbus, IN; one sister, Edna Begley of Lexington; three granddaughters; one grandson, Harry Lee Harmon of Harrodsburg; seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

The funeral was held Wednesday, March 31 at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus, IN with the Rev. John McKay officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 1 at Peter's Cemetery in Mackville.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.

BRIAN SMITH

Brian K. Smith, 33, Cummins Dr., husband of Serena Nichole Shewmaker Smith, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at his home.

Born May 30, 1970 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Russell Gene Smith of Frankfort and Donnie Fay Yeaste Smith of Harrodsburg.

He was currently employed by New Breed Logistics in Danville and was a former employee for the City of Harrodsburg and a graduate of Harrodsburg High School. He was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Blake Mackade Smith,and two daughters, Tiffany Danielle Smith and Brez McKinley Smith, all of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Terri Bradshaw and Sheri Gray, both of Harrodsburg; and his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Smith of Harrodsburg.

The funeral was conducted Monday, March 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Whitehouse officiating. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Troy McGinnis, Mark Bottoms, Harold Herring, John Rector, Travis Devine, Travis McGuire, Wayne Hart and Chris Huff.

Honorary bearers were Tiffany, Brez, and Blake Smith, Dakoda Herring, Adam and Darrick Gray, and Joey and Jared Holt.

CURTISS WADE

Curtiss N. Wade, 80, Melbourne, FL, husband of Flo Wade, died Friday, March 26, 2004 in Melbourne.

Born July 29, 1923 in Harrodsburg, he was a son of the late John and Nancy Wade.

He was a retired director of plant operations at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, had worked for Link Aviation at KSC training Apollo astronauts, and retired in 1965 as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include: two sons, Duane (Tina) Wade and Kevin Wade; two daughters, Karen Wade and Tiffany McCaslin; one brother, Charles (Helen) Wade; two grandsons, and nieces and nephews in KY and IN.

He was preceded in death by one brother, J.C. Wade and two sisters, Maxine and Nancy Wade.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3 at South Brevard Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Memorial donations may be made to Candlelighters of Brevard, 567 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Melbourne, FL 32935.

ANDREW WILLIAMS

Andrew "Andy" Devine Williams, 83, Dixie Manor, husband of Anne Shannon McClellan Williams, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at his home.

Born April 5, 1920 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James Price and Bess Devine Williams.

He was a 1938 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, attended Transylvania College, the University of Kentucky and Centre College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in October of 1941 where he served in North Africa and Italy from 1942 until 1945. He re-enlisted in 1945 and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1965 as chief warrant officer assigned to Air Weather Service as a forecaster. Other assignments included tours of duty in Panama, Greenland, Germany as well as numerous duty stations in the continental U.S. Two years were spent in the Severe Weather Center in Kansas City, MO as a tornado forecaster. He was a professional member of the American Meteorological Society. After retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he became an agent with the Metropolitan Insurance Company for 15 years. He was the health environmentalist for the county health departments in Mercer and Lincoln Counties for eight years, helped to establish the Emergency Management Office for Mercer County and served on the Ethics and Zoning and Planning Commissions. He was a 50 year member of the Mercer Masonic Lodge having served as master twice, was a member of the Oleika Shrine and York Rite Bodies. He also was a member of the Harrodsburg Rotary Club for 25 years having served as president and secretary-treasurer. He was a lifelong member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where he was an elder emeritus.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, March 27 at the Harrodsburg Christian Church with Rev. Don Chase and Father Joe Muench officiating. Burial was in the Springhill Cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearers were Greg McClellan, John McClellan, Dr. Chris McClellan, Stoney McGowan and Rick Davis.

Honorary bearers were Dr. Jack Hankla, David Taylor, Dr. Nick Dedman, Jack Springate and David Patterson.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harrodsburg Christian Church, 305 South Main St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

HALLIE BEST

Hallie Lee Coulter Best, 87, Springfield, widow of Hubert Best, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born June 23, 1916 in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late John Edward and Mary Ann Curtsinger Coulter.

She was a former employee of the former Cowden Manufacturing Company and Medco Center in Springfield and a member of the Springfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Harvey (Janice) Best of Springfield; two daughters, Marilyn (Carl) Curtsinger of Harrodsburg and Donna (Bobby) Cheser of Springfield; one sister, Anna V. Dearinger of Bardstown; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Shields and Dorothy Carney; two brothers, Howard Coulter and Ruel Coulter and one granddaughter, Marsha Denise Cheser.

The funeral will be today, Thursday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at the Carey and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Pike, former pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church, and Rev. Josh Jennings, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be on Cemetery Hill in Springfield.

Pallbearers will be Chris Curtsinger, Andrew Curtsinger, Ryan Ballard, Wesley Sowder, Nathan Hoskins and Matthew White.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wyatt Bishop, Landon Bishop and Dray Hawkins.

Visitation from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 8 a.m. Thursday.

JOSEPH BYERS

Joseph Uriah Byers, 102, South Magnolia St., widower of Bonnie Lindsey Byers, died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born March 26, 1902 in Tennyson, IN, he was the son of the late Alvah and Eva Phillips Byers.

He was a retired school teacher, former postmaster and a member of the Lynnville, IN Masonic Lodge #396 where he served as past master. He was a member of the Lynnville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: two grandsons, Gary and Larry Lance, both of Harrodsburg; two granddaughters, Janice Young of Lawrenceburg and Lois Watts of Harrodsburg; two nephews, Stanley and Bob Byers, both of IL; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, April 7 at the Pemberton-Bradley Funeral Home in Lynnville, IN. Burial was in the Lynnville Cemetery.

Local arrangements were handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lynnville United Methodist Church, 210 East Third St., Lynnville, IN 47619.

WALTER CANTRILL JR.

Walter Cantrill Jr., 85, Mercer County, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

WILLIAM OAKS

William S. Oaks, 78, Lexington Rd., husband of Mildred Bryant Oaks, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1926 in Bell County, he was the son of the late William U. and Maude McKeehan Oaks.

He was a retired electrical engineer for Kentucky Utilities after 39 years, a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy; a graduate of Tennessee Tech University, a member of the Pinnacle Masonic Lodge in Middlesboro a former member of Gideon International and a member, former elder and Sunday school teacher at the Morganfield Christian Church in Morganfield.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Julie (Jerry) Graham and Beth (Donnie) Robison, both of Mercer County; one sister, Emily Catherine Howard of Miami, FL; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, April 6 at the First Christian Church in Middlesboro with Matt Robison and Steve Earl officiating. Burial was in the Middlesboro City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Donnie Robison, Jerry Graham, Luke Robison, Daniel Crass, Alan Howard and Richard Howard.

Honorary bearers were Rekha Crass, Nickie Robison, Elizabeth Crass, Will Crass and Izaiah Robison.

Local arrangements were handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

ELLA SHORT

Ella Irene Robinson Short, 80, McCouns Ferry Rd., Salvisa, wife of Carl Short, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born May 9, 1923 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Tokie Drury Robinson.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Claylick United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for the Beginners Class for several years. She was a member of the adult choir and of the Administrative Board at the church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: three sons, Larry Short of Harrodsburg, Roy Short of Salvisa and Benny Short of McAfee; three daughters, Judith Egbert of Salvisa, Robbie Adkinson of Harrodsburg and Sandra Bowling of Santa Fe, NM; one brother, Jimmy Robinson of Lawrenceburg; one sister, Frankie Simpson of Bloomfield; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Neimier.

The funeral was held Monday, April 5 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. Glen "Pete" Gilliam officiating. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Monty Short, Kevin Short, Terry Egbert, Chris Short, Travis Claunch, Brandon Short and Shawn Adkinson.

Honorary bearers were Sherri Parker, Carol Wilson, Shannon Becknell, Anne Smith, Crystal Scott and Tara Short.
