Harry J. Brownlee
GREENVILLE ­ Harry J. Brownlee, 76, of Greenville, died Sunday, July 6, 2003.
Born May 14, 1927 in Sabetha, Kan., the son of Gale and Elfie Hunt Brownlee, he graduated from Kansas State University in 1951. He worked for three years for Gulf Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma before joining Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in 1954 in Topeka, Kansas. He was an industrial engineer in the Topeka and Izmit, Turkey plants and served as personnel manager at Madisonville from 1967 to 1976. He retired in Topeka in 1989 after 36 years with the company. In retirement, he and his wife lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas before moving to Greenville in 1998 where he was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Brownlee; four sons, Tim of San Antonio, Texas, Ron and wife, Shelia of Greenville, Jamie and wife, Connie of White Bluff, Tenn., and David and wife, Laura of South Belmar, N.J.; a sister, Maridee Needham of Cordova, Tenn.; a brother, Jim Brownlee of Sabetha, Kan., and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 12 at the Greenville United Methodist Church, 144 North Main Street. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Kentucky Chapter, 710 West Main Street, Suite 201, Louisville, KY 40202 - 2690. Tucker Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Billy J. Baugh

BOWLING GREEN ­ Billy J. Baugh, 66, of Bowling Green, died July 6, 2003 at his residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of the late Byron and Mary Louise Wagoner Baugh. He was retired from Holley Performance Products Inc. and attended Providence Knob Baptist Church. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Freida McMillen Baugh of Bowling Green; one son, Steve Baugh of Nashville; one daughter, Kendra (Conrad) Farley of Bowling Green; one brother, Dale Baugh of Bowling Green; three grandsons, Adrian Baugh of Nashville, Parker Farley and Broderick Farley, both of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 8, from 4 ­ 8 p.m. and Wednesday, July 9, from 9 a.m. ­ noon at J. C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel in Bowling Green. Funeral services will also be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel. Burial will follow at Bowling Green Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Providence Knob Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Kentucky.

Robert C. Sallee

NEWBURGH - Robert C. Sallee, 68, of Newburgh, died Sunday, June 29, 2003 at his residence.
Born Sept. 17, 1934 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of Roosevelt and Lulabell McDonald Sallee. He retired from National Can of Evansville in 1996. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and was a member of Gateway Baptist Church of Newburgh.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell Sallee; two sons, Steve (Henrietta) Sallee and Brian Keith (Kim) Sallee both of Evansville; one daughter, Vickie (Jerry) Ashby, of Evansville; six grandchildren and four great - grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Peggy) Sallee of Boonville; and one sister, Linda (Perry) Evitts of Greenville.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 2, at Titzer Family Funeral Home Simpson Chapel in Newburgh with the Rev. Glen Malett of Gateway Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Deaconess Hospice, the American Cancer Society or Gateway Baptist Church.

Mabel V. Phelps
LOUISVILLE - Mabel V. Phelps, 94, of South Louisville, died Sunday, July 6, 2003.
A native of Muhlenberg County, she was a retired seamstress for the Enro Shirt Factory and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Julia Holt; two sons, Larry D. and Thomas Ray Phelps; one brother, Carlisle Parsons; two sisters, Lola Cook and Alton Mllam; 10 grandchildren; 12 great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren. She was cared for by her granddaughter, Pat (Jim) Green.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, at family - owned and operated Nunnelley Funeral Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the memorial fund of her church at 804 Camden Ave., Louisville, KY 40215.

Charles L. Shutt

McCALLA, ALA. - Charles L. Shutt, 64, of McCalla, Ala., died Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the Plantation Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
Born August 27, 1938 in Luzerne, he was the son of Connie Doyle Shutt and Ruby Jane Atkinson Shutt. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bessemer, Ala. and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J. D. Shutt and a sister, Ailene Shutt.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lois Stevenson Shutt of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter, Lynn Shutt (Mike) Darty of McCalla; three brothers, Robert W. “Spud” Shutt and Terry M. Shutt, both of Ownesboro, and John L. Shutt of Greenville; three sisters, Martha DeArmond and Kay Shutt, both of Greenville, and Doris J. Smith of Owensboro; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Thursday, July 2, at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala. Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gary William Steele

VERO BEACH, FLA. - Gary William Steele, 56, of Vero Beach, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at his residence.
Born July 26, 1946 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Glendale Baptist Church in Vero Beach. He was employed in custom paint and body repair at Gary’s Paint and Body Shop.
He is survived by his daughter, Jaime Lee Steele of Florida; his parents, William and Lovelle Steele of Beechmont; two sisters, Sheila Votzi and Angela Cletzer, both of Vero Beach; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 12 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Hines officiating. Burial followed in Jackson Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Gary William Steele Memorial Fund, c/o Indian River National Bank, 958 20th Place, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Gustava “Gusty” Piper

GREENVILLE - Gustava “Gusty” Piper, 90, of Greenville, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1912 in Butler County, she was a homemaker and was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Powderly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estel Piper; and one son, Estel Ray Piper.
She is survived by two sons, James D. (Jo Ann) Piper of White Plains and Dorise Waldo (Joan) Piper of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; 19 great - grandchildren; two great - great - grandchildren; several step grandchildren; step great - grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille Miller and Ruby Nell McKinney, both of Morgantown.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Luther Lykens officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.

Melvina Thompson

Melvina Thompson, 85, of Central City, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born Aug. 15, 1917 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and a member of Green River Chapel General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Buster” Thompson; and three sons, Raleigh Thompson, Randall Thompson and Winfred Thompson.
She is survived by three sons, Charles Thompson and Richard Thompson, both of Greenville, and John Mark Thompson of St. Marys, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; and 31 great - grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 13, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Jewell Martin officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Chester Elmo Arnold

POWDERLY, KY - Chester Elmo Arnold, 80, of Powderly, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born May 22, 1923 in Butler County, he was a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Brownsburg, Ind. He had been employed in the Parts Department of Ford Motor Club.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Vincent Arnold; two brothers, William A. Arnold of Springfield, Va. and Darrel Arnold of Louisville; and one sister, Louise Arnold of Louisville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 15, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Revs. Jim Settlemoir and Steve Plesant officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Butler County.

Frank H. Long

LIVERMORE - Frank H. Long, 90, of Livermore, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Maple Manor Healthcare Center in Greenville.
Born March 23, 1913, he was a farmer and a member of Livermore Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Willard Long, on Sept. 2, 1976.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Helen Long; a daughter, Savannah Garrett of Central City; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 16 great - grandchildren; four great - great - grandchildren; and two sisters, Sydney Troutman of Elkton and Virginia Troutman of Calhoun.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Shockley officiating. Burial followed in Richland Baptist Cemetery in McLean County. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Richland Baptist Cemetery Fund or the Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children. Jean Shocklee Johnson

BREMEN - Jean Shocklee Johnson, 74, of Bremen died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born Aug. 25, 1928 in McLean County, she was the daughter of Richard and Virgie Shocklee of Livermore and was an active member of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Bremen. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Myrl Ray, Mary Lois Burden and Myrtle Fulkerson.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Herb Johnson of Bremen; one son, Randy Johnson of Drakesboro; two daughters, Kay Todd of Greenville and Kathy Farthing of Bowling Green; eleven grandchildren; eight great - grandchildren; one sister, Glenna Jarvis of Nuckols and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Beaver Dam.

J. C. Higgs

J. C. Higgs, 81, of Central City, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born July 1, 1922 in Muhlenberg County, he was a member of Mercer Baptist Church in Central City and was a retired serviceman from Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Central City.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Vanover Higgs; two daughters, Freda Anderson of Drakesboro and Carolyn Arnold of Central City; five grandchildren; two great - grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Boyd of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, also at Tucker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Odle officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Willis Donnie Harris Sr.

GREENVILLE - Willis Donnie Harris Sr., 66, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Maple Manor Nursing Center in Greenville.
Born April 27, 1936 in Muhlenberg County, he was a saw mill worker.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Payne Harris; four sons, William Harris and Marc Daniel Gregory, both of Greenville; Joseph Harris of Lexington; and Willis D. Harris Jr. of Cleaton; fourteen grandchildren; and one sister, Linda McCright of Monroe, Ga.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. R. D. Mize officiating.

Marjorie Catherine Wimbly Reynolds

MERRILLVILLE, IND. - Marjorie Catherine Wimbly Reynolds, 85, of Merrillville, Ind., died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Lincolnshire Healthcare Center in Merrillville.
A native of Central City, she relocated to East Chicago, Ind. in 2000. She was a retired nurse and nutrition assistant. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by five daughters, Sonya O. Smith and Carolyn Reynolds, both of East Chicago, Ind., Gwendolyn (Richard) Allen of Columbia, S.C., Marilyn (Donnie) Cain of Fort Benning, Ga. and Jacqueline (Thomas) Haynes of Clarksville, Tenn.; three sons, Donald of East Chicago, Ind., Ronald (Wanda) of Louisville, and Steve (Cassie) Reynolds of Central City; 20 grandchildren; 25 great - grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, at Mt. Hermon M. B. Church in East Chicago, Ind. with the Rev. André McGhee officiating. Burial followed in Fern Oaks Cemetery in Griffith, Ind. Divinity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
