John Boggess

John Boggess, 74, died Monday, March 22, 2004 at his residence in Central City.
Born in Hopkins County, he was a retired carpenter and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Geanette Boggess; two sons, Steve Boggess of Greenville and Jerry Boggess of Central City; four daughters, Retha Grayson of Greenville, Lillie Rowe, Joyce Boggess Ford and Joyce Linville, all of Central City; two sisters, Joyce Howard and Ruby Hinton, both of Central City; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., March 24 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Carroll officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Lawrence Grissom

SACRAMENTO ­ Lawrence Grissom, 83, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 22, 1920, he was a retired carpenter with the Carpenter’s Local 549 in Owensboro and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church in Bremen. He was a member of John T. Crandle Masonic Lodge #457 in Bremen and Sacramento Eastern Star #67.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Morris Grissom; two sons, Danny Grissom of Smyrna, Tenn. and Larry Grissom of Bremen; a daughter, Kaye Whitmer of Alexandria, Ky.; a sister, Anna Majors of Boonville, Ind.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., March 28 at New Harmony Baptist Church in Bremen with the Rev. Dan Yeager and the Rev. Leslie Moody officiating. Burial followed in New Harmony Cemetery in Bremen. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Walker Luke

CHICAGO, ILL. ­ Walker Luke, 93, formerly of Muhlenberg County, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago.
Born in Menifee County, Ky., May 2, 1910, he was a retired farmer.
Survivors include four sons, Bill Luke and Danny Luke, both of Central City, Harold Luke and Edd Luke, both of Campton, Ky.; five daughters, Lorene Luke and Lula Nokes, both of Chicago, Ill., Faye King of Bowling Green, Jean Dukes and Dorothy Mefford, both of Greenville; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 27 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Penrod

BREMEN ­ Catherine Penrod, 86, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Belle Meade Nursing Center in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 13, 1917, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Erven Selby of East Point, Mich.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., March 29 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial followed in Gish Cemetery in Bremen.

James Howard Carr

DRAKESBORO ­ James Howard Carr, 84, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 3, 1919, he was a retired steel worker and miner, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda McManus of Hoffman Estate, Ill. and Brenda White of Cicero, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., March 30 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery in Drakesboro.

Brenda Joan Laster Gary

GREENVILLE ­ Brenda Joan Laster Gary, 61, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Born in Everts, Ky., Jan. 13, 1943, to the late Howard Laster and Geneva Mae Smith Laster, she was a member of the Elkton Road Church of Christ in Greenville and worked for eight years at Carhartt in Hanson, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, George Franklin Gary Sr. in 2003 and a son, Scott T. Gary in 1982.
Survivors include her mother, Geneva Mae Smith Laster of Central City; a daughter, Kim Largent of Midwest City, Okla.; five sons, Chip L. Gary of Portage, Ind., George F. Gary Jr. of Chicago, Ill., Lance D. Gary of Hanover Park, Ill., Scot F. Gary of Bainbridge, Ohio and Chip H. Gary of Greenville; two brothers, Howard Michael Laster of Greenville and Rocky Mack Laster of South Carrollton; three sisters, Patrica Gail Brewer and Mary Howard Unick, both of Greenville, and Billy Faye Broedling of Sacramento, Calif.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., March 28 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Larry Perkins officiating. Burial followed in Greenbrier Cemetery in Greenville.

Elizabeth Ray Ewing

DRAKESBORO ­ Elizabeth Ray Ewing, 64, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 2, 1939, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ewing, a daughter, Christine Ewing and her father, John C. Garrett.
Survivors include three sons, John (Jenny) Ewing of Drakesboro, William Ray (Tammy) Ewing of Cleaton and James Dean (Bobbi Jo) Ewing of Sharon Grove; three daughters, Patricia Ehlschide of Sharon Grove and JoAnna and Patsy Ewing of Drakesboro; her mother, Eleanor Garrett of Drakesboro; a sister, Jean Brewer of Drakesboro; and three brothers, Sam Garrett of Ubana, Ill., J.C. Garrett of Geary, Ind. and Walter Garrett of Drakesboro.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., March 29 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Wendell Lovell officiating. Burial followed in Jagoe Cemetery in Central City.

Norman Eugene Wilkinson

POWDERLY ­ Norman Eugene Wilkinson, 90, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Knox, Ind., June 28, 1913, he was a construction worker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his caregiver, Peggy Wilson of Powderly.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 29 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Boyken officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

James Larry Brooks

CROFTON ­ James Larry Brooks, 48, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at his residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Aug. 26, 1955, he was a self-employed electrician and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Scott Brooks; a son, James Brooks II of Russellville; a daughter, Melissa Dawn Hallman of Russellville; his mother, Nina Harlan Arndell of Lewisburg; five sisters, Betty (Ernest) Ford of Shelby, Tenn., June (Billy) Harrison of Tallapoosa, Ga., Mary (Gene) Richmond of Lewisburg, Charlotte Roush and Ovada (Dennis) Richmond, both of Russellville; four grandchildren, Jordan Kieth Hallman, Jamie Nicole Hallman, Camron Bailey Hines and Savannah Danielle Brooks; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., March 28 at Tucker Funeral Home with pastor Alan Hopper officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central City.

Hazel F. Steele

GREENVILLE ­ Hazel F. Steele, 88, died Friday, March, 26, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 7, 1916, she was a homemaker and a member of Unity Baptist Church in Graham. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert (Hob) Steele.
Survivors include a daughter, Marion (Sam) Sookey of Depoy; two brothers, Charles Faith of South Gate, Mich. and Ted Faith of Billings, Mont.; three grandchildren, Sherry Corbin of Madisonville, Lana Peterson of Greenville and Sammy Sookey of Evansville; 10 great-grandchildren, Aimee Miller of Bowling Green, Hollie Tooley and Heather Harris of Bremen, Jeremy and Sabrina Sookey of Evansville, Andy, Rachel and Jennifer Corbin and Karen Tapp of Madisonville; and nine great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., March 28 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Drury officiating. Burial followed in Unity Cemetery in Graham.

Thelma Marie Berry

SHARON GROVE ­ Thelma Marie Berry, 81, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Russellville Health Care Manor of natural causes.
Born in Todd County, March 4, 1923, the daughter of the late Ed Tom and Myra Ellen Roberts Slaughter, she was a homemaker and a member of Sharon Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vechel Edward Berry in 1999 and a son, Larry Berry in 1970.
Survivors include two daughters, Faye Waldrop of Claymour and Linda Guffy of Lewisburg; a sister, Ollie Blake of Russellville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., March 28 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Tommy Wilhite and the Rev. Donnie Blick officiating. Burial followed in Gants Cemetery.

Jimmy Dale Johnson

BREMEN ­ Jimmy Dale Johnson, 68, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Born in Muhlenberg County, July 14, 1935, he was a retired miner and a member of Woodson Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served as a Green Beret during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean Johnson; a son, Jim “J.J.” Johnson of Bremen; a daughter, Shellie Stewart of Bremen; a brother, Eddie Johnson of Louisville; and four grandchildren, Leah Brooke Johnson, Jarrod Dewayne Johnson, Jenna Lea Johnson and Logan Tyler Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., March 31 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Casebier and the Rev. Curtis McGehee officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.

Jewell Lee Alexander

COLCORD, W.V. ­ Jewell Lee Alexander, 71, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, May 19, 1932, the son of the late L.C. Alexander and Mary Elva Fleming Alexander, he was a retired employee of Kaiser Aluminum Plant in Dolton, Ill. for 30 years and attended Freedom Pentecostal Church in Ameagle, W.V. He was preceded in death by a son, Jewell Alexander; and three brothers, Johnny, Richard Earl and Charles Freeman Alexander.
Survivors include his wife Flora Ernestine Dillon Alexander; six daughters, Connie Smith and Sandra Lohr, both of Linton, Ind., Bonnie Maynard of Fort Gay, W.Va., Lisa Alexander of Blooming Rose, W.Va., Rose Mary Buchanan of Griffith, Ind. and Pamela Buchanan of Hammond, Ind.; a son, Mark Alexander of Hammond, Ind.; a brother, Youl Lee Alexander of Maple Fork Road, W.Va.; a sister, Mary Riddle of Louisville; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 28 at the Pentecostal Free Church of God in Sycamore, W.Va. with the Rev. Gregory Scarbro and the Rev. Cecil McClellan officiating. Burial followed in Estep Cemetery in Ameagle, W.Va. Arrangements by Valley Funeral Home in Whitesville, W.Va.

Walter Ray Tatum

Walter Ray Tatum, 72, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County May 18, 1932, the son of the late Henry H. and Gladis Lorene Tatum, he was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Henry Earl Tatum of Drakesboro and Bobby Joe Tatum of Beech Creek; four sisters, Annie L. Duvall of Bremen, Hazel Duvall of Central City, Linda Morphew and Patricia J. Jernigan, both of Beech Creek; 16 nieces and four nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. March 24 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold Harper officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

Ethel V. Short

DRAKESBORO ­ Ethel V. Short, 91, died Monday, March 21, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 18, 1913, the daughter of the late Alvin and Elizabeth Hines Hopkins she was a member of the Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville.
Survivors include two daughters, Eloise Grant of Greenville and Georgia Wade Erskine of Drakesboro; a sister, Beulah Hines of Madisonville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. March 26 at the Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Samuel Harris and the Rev. Erskine Wade officiating. Burial followed in the Rochester Cemetery in Rochester. Mason and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
