Eldon McPherson
BELTON ­ Eldon McPherson, 87, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 5, 1916, he was a retired coal miner for Gibraltar Coal Company in Central City. He was a member of Hazel Creek Baptist Church in Belton and a member of the Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge #842 in Beechmont. He was also a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Vernell Williams McPherson; two sons, Shelby McPherson of Lewisburg and Howard McPherson of Belton; three daughters, Eva Jean McKenney of Drakesboro, Dorothy Knight and Fay Brown of Belton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 23 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Chaney and the Rev. Don Piper officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson

Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 at her residence in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County, June 29, 1914, she was a homemaker and a dog breeder. She was preceded in death by her husband, Welbon Johnson; a daughter, Kay Brown; and a son, Walter Johnson.
Survivors include a son, David Johnson of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Donna Harris of Central City and Vera Stout of Henderson, Ky.; three brothers, Joe Devine of Louisville, Jr. Devine of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Allen Devine of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Dorothy Hadley of Louisville; half-sister, Hannah Russell of Illinois; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Watkins officiating. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

James Anthony “Uncle Bubbie” Heath

James Anthony “Uncle Bubbie” Heath, 39, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at his residence in Central City.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Oct. 30, 1964, he was employed at Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Daisy Dukes Bowen in 1993.
Survivors include his stepfather, Jimmy Bowen of Central City; a sister, Starla Bowen of Central City; a niece; and a nephew.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Feb. 28 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Pond Run Cemetery in Ohio County.

Gertha Louise Crowder

ELKTON ­ Gertha Louise Crowder, 89, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at her residence following a long illness.
Born in Butler County, June 19, 1914, to the late Samuel Maxwell and Luna Gardner Maxwell, she was the oldest member of Sharon Grove Baptist Church. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in several one room schools in Todd and Logan County and 21 years at Lewisburg School. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Nathan Crowder in 1952 and her husband, Coleman Clyde Crowder in 1968.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Crowder of Sharon Grove; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 28 at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Jimmy Kenner and Rev. Donnie Blick officiating. Burial followed in Gants Cemetery.

Florence Lear

GREENVILLE ­ Florence Lear, 85, of the Bards Hill community, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 in the Belle Meade Nursing Home following several years illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 17, 1918, to the late Will and Belle Williams Garris, she was a member of the Bards Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warner Lear in 1954 and two brothers, Lonnie and Bill Garris.
Survivors include a daughter, Jewel Henry of Baldwin, Ill.; a son, Ronnie Lear of Greenville; two sisters, Vee Odell of St. Louis, Mo. and Lexie Folk of Depoy; two brothers, W.G. Garris and Dick Garris, both of Greenville; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 28 from Bards Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Groves officiating. Burial followed in the Vernal Grove Cemetery. Gary Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Eudora Powell

BROWDER ­ Elizabeth Eudora Powell, 93, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 in the Methodist Hospital in Union County, Ky.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Jan. 26, 1911, to the late R.B. Hope and Ottie Mae Jenkins Hope, she was a member of Browder General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nevil Powell in 1977.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Stewart of Greenville and Geneva Rich of Malta, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 27 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Brown officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.

Inez Gish Hearld

GREENVILLE ­ Inez Gish Hearld, 70, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 in the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 30, 1933, she was a homemaker and a member of Richardson Chapel General Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Allen Ray Hearld of Central City, Anthony Gene Hearld of Russellville and Joseph Michael Hearld of Bremen; one daughter, Emma Denise Jennings of Powderly; three sisters, Marie Hefley, Ruthie Darst and Fronda Schwartz, all of Louisville; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., March 2 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. T.H. Davis officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.

Annie Louise Tolbert

DUNMOR ­ Annie Louise Tolbert, 92, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 at her residence in Dunmor.
Born in Rochester, Jan. 9, 1912 to the late Theron Dorris and Della (Knight) Dorris, she was a homemaker, member of Dunmor Baptist Church, W.M.U. and Forever Young Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Earl Tolbert.
Survivors include two brothers, Freeman Dorris of Bowling Green and Charles Dorris of Lewisburg; one sister, Lola Coe of Henderson; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., March 2 at Price Funeral Home, Inc. in Lewisburg. Burial followed in Dunmor Cemetery in Dunmor.

Marguerite Joiner Foster

MEMPHIS, TENN ­ Marguerite Joiner Foster, 90, formerly of Greenville, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 in Memphis, Tenn., where she had resided for the past 4 years.
She is the widow of E.Y.B Foster.
Survivors include Edward J. Foster of Memphis, Tenn. and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. March 4 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with Rev. Gary McAbee officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will begin at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Princeton, Ky. The family requests memorial be sent to the First Baptist Church in Greenville for the Christian Life Center.

Lola Mae Browning

GRAHAM ­ Lola Mae Browning, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 at her residence in Graham.
Born in Muhlenberg County on December 26, 1921 to the late Eldred A. Vinson and Lelia Majors Vinson, was a life long member of East Union Baptist Church, and a member of the Yeargins Chapel Homemakers Club. She was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Harold, and Thomas Eldred Vinson.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Everett Browning of Graham; three daughters, Shirley Miller and Susan (Eddie) DeArmond, both of Greenville, and Ruby (Bill) Pendley of Madisonville; one son, David (Dana) Browning of Greenville; two sister-in-laws, Myrtle Ford of Bremen and Ella Vinson of Madisonville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. March 2 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Wingo and Rev. Tondra Daugherty officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Brother Gilbert Lee Gibbs

GREENVILLE ­ Brother Gilbert Lee Gibbs, 76, of Greenville, died suddenly Saturday, February 28, 2004 at his residence.
Born Dec. 14, 1927 in Russellville, Ky. He was the son of Arthur Lee Gibbs and Lora Bell Miles Gibbs. He retired in 1996 after 48 years as a carpenter. He was a preacher for many years in Christian, Logan, Muhlenberg, and Todd counties. He was a Navy Veteran Seaman First Class and was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Mae Spratt Gibbs on May 27, 2000 and two sons Matthew Gibbs and Johnathan E. Gibbs.
Survivors include seven sons, Artie Gibbs of Trenton, Ky., Stephen Gibbs and Michael Gibbs, both of Columbia, S.C., Phillip Gibbs of Irving, Texas, David Gibbs of Las Vegas, Nev., Daniel Gibbs of Nashville, Tenn., Gilbert Gibbs of Crossville, Tenn., Charles Gibbs of Frankfort, Ky., and Mark Gibbs of Louisville, Ky.; Jacob Gibbs of Clarksville, Tenn.; one daughter, Teresa Sirois of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Jean Head of Louisville; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 3 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Everly officiating. Burial will follow in Cliff Hill Cemetery in Todd County.

Elizabeth P. Doss

POWDERLY ­ Elizabeth Doss, 85, of Powderly died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born Oct. 28, 1918 in Muhlenberg County the daughter of the late Benjamin Edgar Doss and Mazie Elizabeth Barnes Doss, she was a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include eight nieces: Judy Mallory, Martha Miller, and Carol Harlos, all of Greenville, Sue Johnson of Powderly, Willadean McGuyer of Dunmor, Mazie Smith of Michigan, Shirley Jean Guynn of Weir, and Julia Ann Doss of Providence; and five nephews, James Jernigan of Powderly, Doug Sparks, W.T. Doss, and Kenneth Ray Doss, all of Greenville, and Benny Doss of Bremen.
Funeral services are at 11a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Gary’s Funeral Home, with Mr. Olin Revelette officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Gary’s.

Gladys Mae Sampson
ECHOLS ­ Gladys Mae Sampson, 91, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville.
Born in Ohio County March 29, 1913, she was the daughter of Oscar G. and Margaret Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, George Rollie Sampson in 1990 and a great-grandson, Johnathan Sampson in 1998.
Survivors include two daughters, Felicia Sue Stanley of Madisonville and Phyllis Kay Saling of Echols; three sons, Bobby Ray Sampson of Alabama, Mike Sampson of Sturgis and David Sampson of Echols; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at Tucker Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Echols General Baptist Cemetery in Echols.

Clara Mae Forsythe Wilcox

HAZARD ­ Clara Mae Forsythe Wilcox, 87, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Charles N. Wilcox; two sons, Preston Leach Forsythe of Browder and Noel Ray Forsythe of Auburn, Ala.; a stepson, Charles N. Wilcox II of Smilax, Ky. and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at Hazard First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ricky Ray officiating. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard was in charge of arrangements. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Mary Frances Mitchell

Mary Frances Mitchell, 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at Maple Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 20, 1922 she was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and retired from G.E. in Owensboro.
Survivors include her niece, Rebecca Page of Russellville; two great-nieces, Jaime Fair and Juliana Page, both of Russellville and two cousins, Carl T. Mitchell and Joe Glenn Mitchell.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at Rose Hill Cemetery with Father Ben Luther officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest U. Shelton

GREENVILLE ­ Ernest U. Shelton, 65, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County June 11, 1939, the son of the late Hayes and Flora Bard Shelton, he was a former employee of Uncle Lee’s and a former member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in Greenville.
Survivors include two sisters, Hazel Shelton Spencer of Mount Kisco, N.Y. and Lauretta Shelton Allen of Paducah; three brothers, Lawrence E. Shelton and Walter R. Shelton, both of Louisville and Hayes Shelton of Central City and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in Greenville with the Rev. Calvin Cole, Sr. and elder Archie Grimmett officiating. Burial followed in Reynolds Cemetery in Greenville. Mason and Sons Funeral Home in Madisonville was in charge of arrangements.
