Harold Douglas Young
Harold Douglas Young, 74, died Thursday, April 6, 2006 at Regional Medical Center.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Aug. 22, 1931, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Central City. He founded Carpet Decorators in 1972. Since that time the company has grown from a small retailer, serving residents of Muhlenberg County to the largest and most well respected flooring contractor in the Ohio River Valley.
Harold’s venture as a floor-covering contractor began when his residential clients requested floor-covering services for their offices and businesses. Harold soon realized that the future of Carpet Decorators was to be in the growth of the commercial business and not in the residential market.
With the addition of a second generation, his son Mark Young joined the firm in 1976, helping to position the company for the growth that was to occur.
After eight to ten years of concentrating work in the local area, Harold set his sights on larger and more ambitious projects. Carpet Decorators was soon managing large scale commercial flooring projects within a 250 mile radius of Central City.
In the mid 1990’s, Harold’s ambitions led the company to change its name to C.D.I. Flooring and open offices in Louisville, Indianapolis and Knoxville. This strategic move positioned the company to become the most dominant flooring company in the tri-state area. After several successful years, Harold retired in 1998, remaining semi-active as C.E.O. until his recent passing.
Harold had many proud moments in business, none of which he cherished more than the addition of a now third generation, a grandson, Ryan Young, who joined the company in 2003.
With a living memory he leaves a legacy of excellence in business that the second and third generation will always strive to achieve.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Young; a son, Mark (Linda) Young of Central City; three daughters, Teresa (Bill) Kirkpatrick and Kim (Mike) Stewart, both of Central City and Tammy (James) Wathen of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Bill Young of Ohio and Bob Young and Darrell Young, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Jeanette Ledford of Manchester and Shirley Whitmer of Sebring, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Shane Kirkpatrick, Jarrett Kirkpatrick, Jason Schmidt, Kirk Ellis, Ryan Young, Michael Wathen, Jamie Wathen, Tyler Wathen and Haley Wathen and four great-grandchildren, Ethan Welborn, Dillon Schmidt, Jacy Schmidt and Katelyn Ellis.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 9 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Lowery officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Central City. Expressions of sympathy may be made to CLL Global Research Foundation, c/o Michael Keating, M.B.B.S., Dept. of Leukemia, Unit 428, P.O. Box 301402, Houston, TX 77230-1402.
