GREENVILLE – Michael Wayne Martin, 44, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 on Highway 176 outside of Drakesboro.
Born in Oak Harbor, Wash. May 12, 1961, he was an operator technician at Logan Aluminum and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his companion, Beverly Kay Shelton of Greenville; a daughter, Chelsea Martin of Greenville; two step-sons, Jedidiah Shelton and Senaca Shelton, both of Central City; two brothers, Charles (Sandra) Martin and Gene (Debra) Martin, both of Central City; a sister, Rita (Terry) Daniels of Bowling Green; a step-grandson, Tre Shelton of Greenville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held at noon Dec. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Otis Cunningham and the Rev. Terry Daniels officiating. Burial followed in West End Cemetery in Greenville.

Allen Matthew Key
BREMEN – Allen Matthew Key, infant, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville.
Born Dec. 23, 2005, he was the son of Chelsie Nichole and Bengy Wone Key, Jr. of Bremen. He was preceded in death by a great-grandfather, Carlos Smith.
Survivors include his parents; a brother, Brandon Tyler Key of Bremen; a sister, Blue Dawn Fentress of Owensboro; grandparents, Kathy Smith, William Watkins, Bengy and Nada Key, all of Bremen and Eugene and Bambi Key of Hartford; and great-grandparents, Joseph and Judy Texas of Owensboro and Carol Smith of Bremen.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 27 at Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen with the Rev. Joey Todd officiating.

Phyllis Gayle Watkins
Phyllis Gayle Watkins, 60, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 12, 1945, she was the daughter of Nerene Richey of Central City and the late Willard Richey. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Bremen. She was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Richey.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Allen Watkins; two sons, Daniel Watkins of Bremen and Brian Watkins of Central City; a daughter, LaDonna Watkins of Sacramento; her mother; a brother, David Richey of Central City; and a sister, Jane Lewis of Central City.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 28 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Jones and the Rev. Danny Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bremen. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 27 at Tucker Funeral Home.

Samuel Jessie Winstead
MADISONVILLE - Samuel Jessie Winstead, 75, of Madisonville died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at his residence.
Born Feb. 13, 1927 in Providence, Ky., he was the son of the late Samuel B. Winstead and Katherine Elizabeth Brooks Winstead. He was a retired coal miner from the Colonial Mines and attended the Madisonville First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Beulah Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Rizpah Shrine Temple. He was also a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Bandy Winstead of Madisonville; one daughter, Sandra S. Lovvorn of Madisonville; one son, Sam W. Winstead of Madisonville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 12 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Dr. Joe Leonard and the Rev. Steve Winstead officiating. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Memorials may take the form of donations to the Green River Hospice or the Mahr Cancer Center. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville was in charge of arrangements.

Elmo Thomas (Ned) Johnson
GREENVILLE - Elmo Thomas (Ned) Johnson, 87, of Greenville, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born June 19, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of George Willard (Boy) Johnson and Bertie Munday Johnson. He was a member of Carter Creek Baptist Church for 47 years and he retired from TVA as a pipe fitter in 1983. He was a World War II Army veteran where he received the purple heart while serving in the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bernice Wells Johnson of Greenville; one daughter, Linda (Danny) Gossett of Greenville; one granddaughter, Pamela R. Gossett of Greenville; one brother, Harold Johnson of Greenville; two sisters, Emma Wells and Peggy McGehee, both of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, at Carter Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Donnie Wilkins, Shane Garrett and Kevin Burden officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Carter Creek Cemetery. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Jean Baker Strader
CADIZ - Barbara Jean Baker Strader, 62, of Cadiz, formerly of Belton, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, due to complications associated with Amyotrophic Laterial Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Born February 5, 1940, she was the daughter of Alberta (Pearson) and the late Harold Baker and was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Murray, Ky.
She is survived by her husband, James Z. Strader, Jr.; two sons, James Kirk (Vicki) Strader of Greenville and John Kevin (Linda) Strader of Elizabethtown; one daughter, Jean Kelly Strader of Cadiz; three grandchildren, Erin Elizabeth of Greenville, Kristen Shea and John Tyler of Elizabethtown; four sisters, Lois, June, Marilyn and Mary Alice; and one brother, David.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Daniels of the First United Methodist Church in Murray officiating. Burial followed in Myers Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Strader’s memory to the ALS Associated, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA91301. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Theodore Wells
GREENVILLE - Theodore Wells, 75, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at his residence.
Born Nov. 2, 1927 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of James Franklin Wells and Lissie Ellen M. Kelly Wells.
He is survived by one sister, Eula Wells of Greenville; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 22, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Richard Day officiating. Burial followed in Olive Grove Cemetery, Greenville. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elwood Scarbrough
GREENVILLE - Elwood Scarbrough, 70, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born Feb. 26, 1932 in Logan County, the son of Raymond Blanco Scarbrough and Lona Eunice Forgy Scarbrough, he was a member of Joines Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James Scarbrough and one sister, Francis Cobb.
He is survived by four sisters, Effie Sears of Elkton, Ruby Burns of Bowling Green, Nadine Bivins and Mary Howard, both of Greenville; five brothers, R. B. Scarbrough of Dunmor, Ernest Scarbrough of Beechmont, Kenneth Scarbrough, Bobby Scarbrough and Bill Scarbrough, all of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Sweeney and DeWayne Caldwell officiating. Burial followed in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Weir. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wendell Arvin Phillips
GREENVILLE - Wendell Arvin Phillips, 90, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1912 in Muhlenberg County, he was retired from Burroughs Corporation in Michigan as a boiler operator. He was a member of Green’s Chapel General Baptist Church and Pond River Masonic Lodge #244 F. & A.M. in Greenville.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Phillips of Greenville; one daughter, Evelyn Buss of Greenville; one son, Ronald W. Phillips of Bowling Green; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Lucille Schaffstein of Roseville, Mich.; one stepson, Jack Coffman of White Mills, Ky.; and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Walter Evitts officiating. Burial followed in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Ky. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alma Louise Whitaker
HARTFORD - Alma Louise Whitaker, 81, of Hartford, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at her residence.
Born June 13, 1921 in Muhlenberg County, she was a homemaker and was of the Church of God faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Calvert (Tobe Tucker) Whitaker in 1983 and one daughter, Elizabeth May Johnson in 1995.
She is survived by six sons, Johnny Whitaker of Hartford, Phillip Gene Whitaker of McHenry, Ky., Charles Earl (Charlie) Whitaker of Beaver Dam, Raymond Darrell Whitaker of Horse Branch, Oather Whitaker and Bobby Lee Whitaker, both of Centertown, Ky.; four daughters, Margaret Francis Johnson of Centertown, Helen Darlene Johnson of Beaver Dam, Anna Sue Jones of Morgantown, Ky., and Victoria Lynn (Vicky) Howard of Hartford; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Whitaker of McHenry, Ky.; 38 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren; and one foster son, Jarrod Walker of Dawson Springs.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Blacklock officiating. Burial followed in New Bethel Cemetery in Ohio County. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Hospice of Ohio County, 1211 Main St., Hartford, KY 42347. Miller - Schapmire Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ogden Craig
PADUCAH - Ogden Craig, 84, of Paducah, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.
Born Nov. 21, 1918 in Muhlenberg County, he was retired as a conductor from ICRR and was a member of First Baptist Church in Central City. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, June Tandy Craig; one son, Robert Craig of Kissimmee, Fla.; one daughter, Mary Alice Mader of Franklin, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Sean Wilson of Franklin, Tenn. and Linda Knost of St. Cloud, Fla.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 22, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Bob Lowery officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Goble Jay Moore
SACRAMENTO - Goble Jay Moore, 72, of Sacramento, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born May 28, 1930 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell Rich Moore; one son, Larry Jay Moore of Dunmor; one step-grandson, Jordan Dukes; three sisters, Hilda Fay Vaught and Gilda Ray Marcolini, both of Mortons Gap and Eva Mae Sisk of Gary, Ind.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Revs. Leroy Vaught, J. W. Haire and Bob Rich officiating. Burial followed in Yeargins Chapel Cemetery in Graham. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charles LeGrand
Charles LeGrand, 82, of Central City, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at National Health Care in Madisonville.
Born July 29, 1920 in Muhlenberg County, he was of the Baptist faith and was a coal miner. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles LeGrand, Jr. in 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Hoskins LeGrand; four sons, Gerald LeGrand of Beechmont, Jewell LeGrand of Powderly, Henderson LeGrand and Winkie LeGrand, both of Central City; five daughters, Mary Ann Stoakley of Spring Hill, Fla., Tammy LeGrand and Belle Marie LeGrand, both of Madisonville, Betty Riley of Sacramento and Shirley Arnold of Central City; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren;three sisters, Gladys Whitaker of New Jersey, Eva Craig of Sacramento and Irene Humphrey of Central City; one brother, Emmitt LeGrand of Central City and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were held Monday, Dec. 23, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. Curtis McGhee officiating. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Irwin Gerald “Perk” Oberg
MADISONVILLE - Irwin Gerald “Perk” Oberg, 74, of Madisonville, formerly of Greenville, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at his residence.
Born August 20, 1928 in Forestburg, Alberta, Canada, he was the third child of the late Gerald Oberg and Annie Bly Oberg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Everett Oberg. Mr. Oberg worked on the family farm and went to school in Forestburg until 1947 when he left and attended the Vermillion Agriculture Institute. After graduation in 1948 he went to Seattle, Washington to work for the Boeing Aircraft Company in 1950. He joined the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served with the 101st Airborne Division until 1953 at which time he enrolled at the University of Missouri. After graduation in 1957 he went to work for Peabody Coal Company in Western Kentucky where he served in various capacities. He was Superintendent of Sinclair, River Queen and Riverview Mines and General Superintendent of all Kentucky operations. He also served as Vice President of Surface Operations until 1973. He then accepted a job as Director of Operations for Brown Badgett Inc. until 1979. At this time he went to work for Natomas Coal Company in Denver, Colorado as President until his retirement in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Hoagland Oberg; one daughter, Sarah Johnson of Evansville; one son, Stuart Oberg of Evansville; two stepdaughters, Lori Melton of Albany, Ky. and Jena Gamblin of Bowling Green; three sisters, Irene Stewart of Galahad, Alberta, Canada, Alarie Detert of Miami, Fla. and Jeannie Grainger of Penticton, British Columbia; one brother, Wilmer Oberg of Alberta; two grandchildren, John Oberg and Jamie Oberg, both of Evansville; nine step-grandchildren, Jesse Vincent, Josh Vincent, Myra Vincent, Tessa Reece, Neal Gamblin, Kyle Johnson, Katie Glaser, Karianne Glaser and Damon Glaser; and one step-great-grandchild, Kristin Gamblin.
Memorial services willbe held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville. Burial will follow at a later date in Canada. Memorials may take the form of donations to Green River Hospice, 109 S. Second St., Central City, KY 42330; First Christian Church, East Main Cross St., Greenville, KY 42345; or Pleasanton Historical Society, Forestburg, Alberta, Canada TOBINO. Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville is in charge of arrangements.

Loran Gardner Dempsey
GREENVILLE - Loran Gardner Dempsey, 86, of Greenville, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born August 28, 1916 in Muhlenberg County, he was the son of Obe Gardner Dempsey and Lucy DeMotte Dempsey. He owned and operated Dempsey’s Furniture in Greenville and was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Greenville Kiwanis Club and Pond River Masonic Lodge #244 F. & A.M. for 56 years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Raymour Wilkerson Dempsey of Greenville; two daughters, Janice Lorraine (Jan M.) Camplin of Greenville and Joan Elaine (Michael Patrick Sr.) Robards of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two grandchildren, Emily Elaine Robards of Dallas, Texas and Michael Patrick Robards Jr. of Tuscaloosa.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Julian Maxedon and Bob Lowery officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Greenville United Methodist Church Building Fund. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Eugene “Gene” Tucker
BEECHMONT - Samuel Eugene “Gene” Tucker, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born Sept. 8, 1925 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired coal miner, previously employed at Arch on the Green, Airgem Mine. He was a member of Hazel Creek Baptist Church in Belton, United Mine Workers of America and Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle “Garrett” Tucker; one daughter, Connie (David) Browning of Rosewood; two grandsons, Lucas Browning and Michael Browning, both of Rosewood.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 25, at 6 p.m. at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m., also at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Chaney officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson Cemetery in Beech Creek. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Alice Hendricks
SACRAMENTO - Jessie Alice Hendricks, 90, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003 at Maple Manor Nursing Center in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 8, 1913, she was a housewife and of the General Baptist faith.She was preceded in death by her husband, Finnie Hendricks.
Survivors include a son, Bobby Hendricks of Sacramento; two sisters, Irene Boykin and Addie Vandygriff, both of Bremen; two grandsons, Dennie Hendricks and Tim Hendricks, both of Bremen; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Dec. 24 at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. Glenn Harper officiating.Burial followed in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.

Elizabeth C. Fuller
HOPKINSVILLE - Elizabeth C. Fuller, 95, formerly of Central City, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at Christian Health Center in Hopkinsville.
Born in Daviess County, March 28, 1908, she was a retired schoolteacher for Central City and Muhlenberg Central high schools and a member of First Christian Church in Hopkinsville.She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston William Fuller and her son, Houston William Fuller, Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Lyons of Hendersonville, Tenn. and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Dec. 26 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. C.W. Duncan and Chaplain Robert C. Lyons officiating.Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

James Denzil “Dink” Hunt
GREENVILLE - James Denzil “Dink” Hunt, 81, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital following several weeks of illness.
Born in Crittenden County, Aug. 16, 1922, he was employed by the Kentucky Utilities Company for 40 years.He served in Earlington and transferred to Marion, Ky. in 1957 as manager.He served as district manager in Dawson Springs in 1972 and served as district manager in Greenville from 1973 until his retirement in 1987.He was a member of the Greenville First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 50 years.He was ordained in Earlington in 1953.He was a 50-year mason of the Masonic Lodge in Marion, president of the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, president of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Crittenden County Hospital Board and the Marion, Kentucky City Council.He served on the Pennyroyal Mental Health Board where he received an outstanding service award at his retirement.He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years during World War II.He was preceded in death by a brother.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Virginia Hunt; a son, Stephen D. (Judy) Hunt of Marion, Ky.; and one granddaughter, Melissa (Scott) Hunt Tabor of Marion.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Dec. 24 at First Baptist Church in Greenville with the Rev. Gary McAbee officiating.Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Marion, Ky.Contributions can be made to the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church or the Cancer Fund.
