James Maxwell Mohon

KETTERING, OH - James Maxwell Mohon, 90, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at his home.
Born in Beech Creek June 14, 1916, he was a retired supervisor of manufacturing at the General Motors plant in Dayton, Oh., and worked at various times in the Beech Creek coal mines. He was a First LT during WWII in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Shroyer Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann L. Green Mohon; his parents, Lucillius and Lola Mohon; a brother, Lucillius Mohon, Jr.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cook and Sue Dell Parker.
Survivors include his wife, Martha L. Mohon; a daughter, Martha McCarthy of Dayton; a sister, Evelyn Starnes of Lubbock, Tex.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at David’s Cemetery in Kettering. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cure Search National Childhood Cancer Foundation, Development Office, P.O. Box 30375, Bethesda, MD 20824-9906. Newcomer Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Everett L. Browning
GREENVILLE - Everett L. Browning, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, in the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County July 28, 1913, he was the son of the late Samuel Henry and Leona Whitmer Browning. He retired in 1976 from Vogue Mines after 32 years as a UMWA coal miner. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lola Mae Vinson Browning Feb. 28, 2004; two brothers, Benji Browning and Raymond Browning; and a sister, Berchie Rice.
Survivors include a son, David (Dana) Browning of Greenville; three daughters, Shirley Miller and Susan (Eddie) DeArmond, all of Greenville, and Ruby (Bill) Pendley of Madisonville; a sister, Myrtle Ford of Bremen; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Wingo and the Rev. Tondra Daugherty officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.

Robert C. Penrod

GALION, OH - Robert C. Penrod, 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Galion Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County March 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Robert Clyde and Lara Mabel Shemwell Penrod. He served with the U.S. Army 11th Airborne during World War II. He was a retired machine operator from Perfection-Coby Co. in Galion and was a member of Steelworkers of America Local 4232 from 1967-1985. He was a member of Southview Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert D. “Dale” Penrod and Leland Glenn Penrod; and one brother, Woodson Penrod. Survivors include his wife, Mary E. McKinney Penrod; two sons, Wesley Penrod of Auburndale, Fla., and George Penrod of Pinellas Co., Fla.; four daughters, Sherry Groves of Auburndale, Deborah Reindl Smith and Pamela Marie Smith, both of Galion, and Sandra Douglas of Shelby; two sisters, Euberta Stanley of Malvern, Ark., and Jean Johnson of Muhlenberg Co.; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 at Southview Baptist Church in Galion with Pastor David Cline officiating. Richardson-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Laverne Benzel

OWENSBORO - Gerald Laverne Benzel, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Western Kentucky Veteran’s Center in Hanson.
Born in Scottsbluff, Neb., March 31, 1931, he retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion in Owensboro and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Hazel Benzel; a son, Wade C. Benzel of Henderson, three daughters, Taryn Westerfield, Cheri Johnson and LuAnn Filbert, all of Owensboro; a brother, Clarence Benzel of Scottsbluff; a sister, Keitha Kuxhausen of Scottsbluff; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 30 at Tucker Funeral Home with Chaplain Sam Beeny, Sr., officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Western Kentucky Veteran’s Center, 926 Veteran’s Drive, Hanson, KY 42413, ATTN: Activities.

Sandra Kay Smith

DRAKESBORO - Sandra Kay Smith, 62, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County May 13, 1944, she was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Nelson.
Survivors include her husband, Levon Smith; two sons, Roger L. (Becky) Smith, Jr., of Drakesboro and Robert M. (Stacy) Smith of Central City; her mother, Dorothy Barber of Drakesboro; two brothers, Raymond (Jean) Barber and Wallace Barber, both of Drakesboro; five sisters, Carolyn (James) Nole of Sebree, Rita (Bobby) Gish of Bremen, Paulette (Bobby) Miller of Browder, Donna (Bobby) Williams of Central City and Mary (Chris) Ford of Drakesboro; a son-in-law, Jeff Nelson; and five grandchildren, Harley, Matt and Michael Smith, Abby Nelson and Tyler Wolfe.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 30 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Mooneyhan officiating. Burial followed in Peanut Cemetery in Drakesboro.

Elma Lois Stewart Vincent

GREENVILLE - Elma Lois Stewart Vincent, 92, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several years’ illness.
Born in Graham July 23, 1914, she was the twin daughter of Eli and Sara Lelia Forrester Stewart. She was a member of the Greater Lighthouse Pentecostal Church in Madisonville and attended until she entered the nursing home in 1996. She was an LPN at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Mich., until she retired in 1979 after 26 years. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Gene Stewart, Archie Stewart, Earl Stewart and James (Futney) Stewart; and four sisters, Nellie Vincent, May Haley, Flozzia Hines and twin sister Velma Cunningham.
Survivors include two sons, Ransom (Nancy) Moore of Greenville and Bennie L. (Rowena) Vincent of Hanson; one brother, J.C. (Lena) Stewart of Charleston, Ky.; one sister, Hazel Dewey of Clarkston, Mich.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 30 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. R.M. Hendricks officiating. Burial followed in Corley Chapel Cemetery in Graham.

Scott Whitler

GREENVILLE - Scott Whitler, 38, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in the Owensboro Mercy Health System.
Born in Charleston, S.C., Feb. 11, 1968, he was the son of Richard and Dianne Black Whitler. He attended Leigh’s Chapel General Baptist Church. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1986 and Western Kentucky University in 1992 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was in the Army Reserves for eight years as a 1st Lieutenant.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Candra Carwell Whitler; a daughter, Catey Beth Whitler of Greenville; a son, Cy Carwell Whitler of Greenville; his parents, Richard and Dianne Whitler of Greenville; a sister, Melissa Dianne (Tony) Shanks of Greenville; a brother, Ty Whitler of Owensboro; two nephews, Lucas and Cole Shanks of Greenville; and his mother-in-law, Jean (Curtis) Hardison of Greenville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary McAbee and the Rev. Tony Shanks officiating.

James Earl Arnold

DRAKESBORO - James Earl Arnold, 73, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County May 6, 1933, he was a member of Drakesboro 1st Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Betty June Taylor of Mt. Washington, Ky., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Stovall officiating. Burial followed in Forest Grove Cemetery in Browder.

Felix E. Vincent

BREMEN - Felix E. Vincent, 83, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at his residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 1, 1923, he was a retired farmer and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Rearden officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Bremen.

Jerry Allan Burch

Jerry Allan Burch, 62, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Maple Manor Healthcare in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County May 18, 1944, he worked in a tire store.
Survivors include a son, Michael Burch of Central City; two daughters, Melissa Burch and Marsha Burch, both of Central City, a brother, Richard Burch of Lake Malone; two sisters, Lisa Sherman of Bremen and Sherry Burch of Ill.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Richardson Chapel General Baptist Church in Central City. Burial will be private.
Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Noffsinger Shaver

Pauline Noffsinger Shaver, 94, died Sunday Oct. 1, 2006, at her residence.
Born in Muhlenberg County Sept. 16, 1912, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Central City. She was preceded in death by her husband, P.A. Shaver, Jr., in 2002.
Survivors include a son, Tom (Skip) Shaver of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Oct. 5 and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at Tucker Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Shavers Chapel Cemetery in Bremen.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to either the Madisonville Community College-Muhlenberg County Campus, 406 E. Everly Brothers Blvd., Central City, KY 42330 or First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Broad Street, Central City, KY 42330.

Carl Clyde Shrull

RUSSELLVILLE - Carl Clyde Shrull, 88, died Friday Sept. 29, 2006 at the Logan Memorial Hospital.
Born in Logan County Oct. 25, 2006 to the late Charlie Shrull and Mamie Pogue Shrull, he was a farmer and member of Concord Baptist Church and attended Southern Heights Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Winona Shrull; two sons, Randall Shrull of Sikeston, Mo. and Dale Shrull of Russellville; four daughters, Rita Woodall, Jayne Cox, Sharon Harper and Donna Arnold, all of Russellville; one stepson, Glennis Porter of Penrod; three stepdaughters, Debbie Mullen of Greenville, Angie Mullen of Lewisburg and Renee Stratton of Russellville; one brother, Charles Shrull Jr. of Centertown; three sisters, Ella Desper of Clarksville, Ind., Dorothy James of Sturgis and Nina Murphy of Owensboro; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at Southern Heights Baptist Church with Bro. Chris Short, Bro. Carl Freudenthal and Bro. Chris Phillips officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to a favorite charity.

Earl Mansfield
ELKTON - Earl Mansfield, 79, died September 23, 2002 at his residence in Elkton after a lengthy illness.
Born January 9, 1923 in Muhlenberg County, he was a retired farmer and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member and deacon of Joines Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsa D. Mansfield in 1985.
Survivors include one son, David Mansfield of Elkton; one brother, Bernard Mansfield of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Flossie Wells of Russellville and Thelma Wells of Belton; four grandchildren, Alan Mansfield and Tommy Mansfield, both of Clifty, Sandy Lear and Todd Mansfield, both of Elkton.
Funeral services were held September 26 at Joines Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Sweeney officiating, assisted by Rev. Hobart Eaton. Burial followed in the Joines Chapel Cemetery in Todd County. Gary’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emily Delores Bledsoe

GREENVILLE - Emily Delores Bledsoe, 86, died September 26, 2002 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a short illness.
Born April 19, 1916 in Edgefield, South Carolina, she was a homemaker and a member of Lone Star Baptist Church in Weir.
She is survived by two daughters, Lois Perrine (Gary) Camp of Forest Park, Georgia and Delores (Wayne) Fann of Greenville; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements in Greenwood, South Carolina were handled by Blyth Funeral Home. Burial followed in Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood, SC. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville was in charge of local arrangements.

Larry Thomas (Tommy) Hunt

GREENVILLE - Larry Thomas (Tommy) Hunt, 55, died September 25, 2002 in Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville after several months of illness.
Born January 25, 1947 in Muhlenberg County, he was an instrument supervisor for Green River Power Plant in Moorman. He worked with Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. He received a heart transplant at Saint Thomas Hospital in 1995. He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Hunt, in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Deborah Pendley Hunt of Greenville; three sons, John Walter Hunt of Bowling Green, Jason Thomas Hunt of Greenville and Nathan Van Hunt of Owensboro; his mother, Mrs. Guy (Boonie) Hunt of Greenville; and one brother, David Duncan Hunt of Louisville.
Funeral services were held September 27 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. Funeral arrangements were handled by Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Boys Scout Troop #40 of Greenville or to the Heart Transplant Center at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
