POWDERLY ­ Dorothy Mae (McGuyer) Piper, 78, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at her residence in Powderly.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Feb. 22, 1926, she was a homemaker the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sons, Danny Piper of Knoxville, Barry Piper of Greenville, Joseph Piper of Tell City, Ind., Jeffrey Piper of Powderly and Dee Piper of Belton; seven daughters, Janice Warner of Lemont, Ill., Sue Yates of Knoxville, Jeannie Ward, Barbara Troutman and Sheila Piper, all of Powderly, Evelyn Brooks of Luzerne and Beverly Cates of Fordsville; two brothers, Thomas McGuyer of Lake Malone and Thurman McGuyer of Princeton, Ind.; three sisters, Faye Phelps and Nettie Todd, both of Evansville and Citie Hammers of Calif.; 27 grandchildren; and 32 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., June 23 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. T.H. Davis officiating. Burial followed in Miller Cemetery in Cleaton.

Raymond L. (Buddy) Bruce

SAN ANTONIO ­ MSGT. Raymond L. (Buddy) Bruce, 66, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 in San Antonio.
Born in Muhlenberg County, March 5, 1938, to the late Edgar Leon Bruce and Ruth (Dukes) Bruce, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all whom he met. He served in the USAF for 22 years in such locations as Japan, Philippines, Italy and Thailand before retiring from Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX. He continued to work for the US Postal Service and retired in 2002. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Charles Bruce.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Martha Bruce; his mother, Ruth (Dukes) Bruce; a son, Ray (Cecilia) Bruce Jr.; four sisters, Doris Piper, Patsy Leach, Linda Sosa and Sandra Blankenship; two brothers, Michael and Billy Bruce; two grandchildren, Julia and Faith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 9:45 a.m. June 7 at Northwood Presbyterian Church. Burial followed at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.

Elijah Gray King

DRAKESBORO ­ Elijah Gray King, 79, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Feb. 2, 1925, he was a US Army WWII Veteran, a
retired laborer at TVA and was of Holiness Faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Aretta King.
Survivors include a son, Steve King of Cannelton, Ind.; two daughters, Cindy Fraze of Bremen and Joanna Drake of Belton; a sister, Nellie Jones; a half - sister, Esther Huff; a half - brother, Tony King; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., June 25 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. James Anthony Mason officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Desma Gerline Hill

GREENVILLE ­ Desma Gerline Hill, 83, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Sept. 3, 1920, to the late Malcom Elmo Hill and Lattie Corrin (Cary) Hill, she was a retired bus driver for the Muhlenberg County Board of Education after 10 years, a housewife and homemaker, and a member of Cherry Grove Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by a brother, Woodburn Hill.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Kenneth Winford Hill; two daughters, Wilda Ann Boggess of Weir and Deanna Noffsinger of Greenville; a brother, Charles Hill of Hopkinsville; a sister, Angelyn Scott of Graham; five grandchildren, Steve Boggess, Laquita Strader, Troy Boggess, Michelle Wines and Shawn Noffsinger; and five great grandchildren, Chasity, Blake, Logan, Cole and Christin.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., June 26 at Gary’s Funeral Home with Mr. Bob Gardner and Mr. Ray Gann officiating. Burial followed in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir.

Betty Piper

BELTON ­ Betty Piper, 59, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at her residence in Belton.
Born in Muhlenberg County, April 8, 1945, she was a homemaker and a member of the Holiness Faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Nivell Mosby and Jewell Wayne Eaves and two sons, Veachel Lynn and Charles Joseph Piper.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Piper; three sons, Franklin Gene Brown of Cleaton, Charles Piper III of Livermore and Frankie Wayne Piper of Belton; five daughters, Kathy Darlene Robertson and Jennifer Suzanne Johnson, both of Belton, Samantha Sue Robinson of Cleaton and Terrie Lynn Garrett and Felicia Kay Piper, both of Powderly; six sisters, Jennie Lee Brewer, Ella Johnson and Oza Nannie, all of Cleaton, Barbara Russ of Greenville, Anne Hamby of Nelson Creek and Judy Fraze of Central City; 24 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m., June 28 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. George Gray, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

James “Buddy” Stewart

BREMEN ­ James “Buddy” Stewart, 67, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 26, 1936, to the late Lee and Minerva Stewart, he was retired from the ICC Railroad and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Hellen Walker and two brothers, Billy and Edward Stewart.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia “Granny” Stewart; three sons, Roger, Robbie and Donnie Stewart, all of Bremen; two brothers, Cletus and Clyde Stewart, both of Bremen; a sister, Vernel Higgins of Bremen; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., June 28 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Thurman Harris officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

Evelyn Joines

MADISONVILLE ­ Evelyn Joines, 84, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Todd County, Dec. 19, 1919, to the late Freeman Y. and Jessie Williams Baggett, she was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eddie Weatherford and her second husband, Jimmie Thomas Joines, and a sister, Ruby Greenwood.
Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Holeman Parish of Nebo, Alice Sue Lynch of Anton and Joyce Burbage and Earnestine “Tina” Robertson, both of Madisonville; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., June 28 at Barnett - Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville with Bro. Rance Wyatt officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Leonard R. Evans

Leonard R. Evans, 45, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at his residence in Central City.
Born in Granite City, Ill., Jan. 19, 1959, he was a truck driver and a member of Trinity Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Eaves; a brother, Tony Eaves; and step son, Rondell Foster.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Louise and Otto Motler of Dale, Ind.; his fiancé, Gretta M. Ashley of Central City; two step daughters, Kelly Peay of Drakesboro and Ashley Moore of Central City; a step son, Larry Foster of Central City; a sister, Joyce Raden of Parma, Mo.; a half - brother, Micheal Hogue; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m., June 28 at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial followed in Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.

Deloris Balladarez

BREMEN - Deloris Balladarez, 66, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
She was born in Muhlenberg County, July 14, 1937.
Survivors include a son, Frank Balladarez of Calif.; four sisters, Donna Lile and Debbie Vincent of Lake Malone, Wanda Cox of Central City and Carolyn Morris of Bremen; and a brother, Tommy Lile of Greenville.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m., June 28 at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. T.H. Davis officiating. Tucker’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Allison

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M - Dorothy Allison, 87, formerly of Central City died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at a nursing home in Albuquerque, N.M.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Aug. 3, 1916, she was a retired L.P.N. and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green.
Survivors include a sister, Jackie Gregory of Albuquerque and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., June 30 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City with the Rev. Wendell Smith officiating. Tucker’s Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Earl “Chisel” Johnson

BREMEN - Jeffrey Earl “Chisel Johnson, 44, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Dec. 24, 1959, to the late Ballard and Edna Earl Johnson, he enjoyed working on the lawn, gardening, NASCAR and motorcycles and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and Shelby Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Johnson; a son, Danny Johnson of Bremen; a stepdaughter Jennifer (Doyle) Piper; a stepson, Kenneth Scheer; two brothers, Jerry and Darrel Lewis Johnson, both of Sacramento; a granddaughter, Sierra Piper; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., June 30 at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento with the Rev. Leroy Rearden and the Rev. Timmy Camplin officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bremen.

Lizzie Irene Sadler
GREENVILLE - Lizzie Irene Sadler, 90, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late W.H. Dukes and Mary Elizabeth Dukes and was a member of Johnston’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Pistol) Sadler and a son, Thurman Sadler.
Survivors include three grandchildren; four great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. June 26 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Royce Dukes officiating. Burial followed in the Johnston Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mavis Imogene Mayes
ROCHESTER - Mavis Imogene Mayes, 80, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at Owensboro Medical Health System.
Born in Butler County Aug. 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James Elbert Jenkins and Minnie Harper Jenkins. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rochester Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell (Wimp) Mayes; two daughters, Gail Vanderver of Sacramento and Joan Southard of Huntsville, Ky.; two sisters, Thelma Patton of Rochester and Mardell Kennedy of Belton; three grandchildren; two great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 24 at the Jones Funeral Chapel with Brother Roger Heltsley officiating. Burial followed in the Rochester Cemetery.

Iris Virginia Hamby
BREMEN - Iris Virginia Hamby, 68, died, Thursday, June 23, 2005 at her residence.
Born in Randolph County, Ark. Jan. 27, 1937, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Apostolic Church in Bremen.
Survivors include her husband, Brother Larry Hamby, two sons, Teddy Hamby and Larry Lee Hamby, both of Bremen; two daughters, Patricia Rolley of Bremen and Sherry Melton of Calif.; two brothers, Lowell Robinson and Cloyce Robinson, both of Arkansas; a sister, Dalline Brumley of Arkansas and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 27 at the First Apostolic Church in Bremen. Graveside services were at 3 p.m. June 28 at the Hite Cemetery in Biggers, Ark. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gerald “Jerry” W. Mathis
CLEARWATER, FLA. - Gerald “Jerry” W. Mathis, 62, died, Monday, June 20, 2005.
Born in Greenville July 31, 1942 into a Baptist home, he was the son of the late Emmit Herchel Mathis and Carrie Emily Mathis. He was retired from American General Insurance after many years of dedicated service. He was an avid sports fan that enjoyed spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vara Whitehouse and nephews, David Whitehouse, Gordon Mathis and Boyce Mathis.
Survivors include his longtime loving companion, Delores Allen of Highland, Ind.; five loving children, Bart (Lori) Mathis of Indianapolis, Ind., Bruce (Carrie) Mathis of Hammond, Ind., Sheri (Thomas) Horvatin of Largo, Fla., Kevin (Cori) Mathis and Kristal Mathis, both of Highland, Ind.; two sisters, Ima (Cecil) Knight of Highland, Ind. and Gladys (Glen) Ward of Powderly; a brother, Boyce (Eva) Mathis of Greenville; three grandchildren, Ryan and Blake Mathis and Luke Mathis and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. June 24 at Gary’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis McGee officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville. The family requests that contributions be made in Jerry’s name to Hospice Care or Cancer Society Organizations.

Anna Jane Grissom
SACRAMENTO - Anna Jane Grissom, 78, died Friday, June 24, 2005 at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Born in Muhlenberg County Aug. 11, 1927, she was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church in Bremen and a member of Bremen Eastern Star Chapter. She was retired from General Electric in Owensboro and had also worked as a cafeteria monitor at Bremen Elementary School.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Grissom of Smyrna, Tenn. and Larry Grissom of Bremen; a daughter, Kaye Whitmer of Alexandria, Ky.; two sisters, Mary Patterson of Sacramento and Betty Hedges of Louisville; three brothers, Johnnie Morris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Elbert Morris of Louisville and Allen Ray Morris of Henderson; five grandchildren, Brady Grissom, B.J. Whitmer, Jay Grissom, Elizabeth Vincent and Seth Grissom; two great - grandchildren, Hannah Vincent and Hunter Grissom and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. June 26 at New Harmony Baptist Church in Bremen with the Rev. Dan Yeager officiating and assisted by the Rev. Leslie Moody. Burial followed in New Harmony Cemetery in Bremen. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Franklin “Frankie” McRoy
Robert Franklin “Frankie” McRoy, 66, died Friday, June 24, 2005 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital.
Born in Muhlenberg County Dec. 16, 1938, he was a painter.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Cottrell of Greenville.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. June 26 at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
