Services for I. Louise "Sam" Brown, 60, of Ruston, LA will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2003 in the Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Witt. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Calhoun under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Ms. Brown died Thursday, January 2, 2003 in Ruston, LA following a brief illness. Ms. Brown was retired from General Motors Corp. where she was employed for over 20 years. She was a member of South Parkway Worship Center. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, and best friend who always took care of her girls. She received great joy in serving God and caring for her great granddaughter, Anna Kelly, in the last years of her life. Mama, you loved, cared and gave us your strength when we were blinded and crippled and couldn't take care of ourselves. We love you. May you fly with the angels that you so dearly loved. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Diane George, and a brother, Richard Dickey. Survivors include her mother, Margie O. Davis; Mawee's Angel Baby, Anna Rene' Kelly; two daughters, Donna Rene' Coen of Ruston and Debbie Lynn Rose of Shreveport; grandchildren, Eugene Debeau "Beau" Thornton and Brandi Rene' Thornton, both of Anchorage, AK and Jonathan James Rose of Shreveport; great grandchildren, Dylan Shiloh Kelly of West Monroe and Anna Rene' Kelly of Ruston; a niece, Amanda Dickey Cavin of Ruston; and a nephew, Michael Dickey of Calhoun. Services for Mrs. Lucile R. Mulhearn, age 82, of Denham Springs, LA and a native of Winnsboro, LA will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2003 in the Chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Winnsboro, LA, with Rev. Wybra Price officiating. Burial will follow in Myrtle Memorial Cemetery, Winnsboro, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Winnsboro, LA. Mrs. Mulhearn was a retired floral designer and a member of First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro, LA. She is preceded in death by daughter Mary Margaret Mulhearn; sisters, Katherine Gowan and Elizabeth Tillotson; and brother, I. Q. Robinson. Mrs. Mulhearn died January 1, 2003 in Denham Springs, LA. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Robert F. Mulhearn of Denham Springs, LA; son and daughter-in-law, Frederick and Roxanne Mulhearn of Denham Springs, LA; two grandsons, Dylan Mulhearn of Denham Springs, LA and Rob Mulhearn and his wife Tammy of Austin, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Billie L. Calahan, 77, of Ruston, LA will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2003 in the Cook Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Witt. Services are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Ms. Calahan died Monday, December 30, 2002 in Arcadia, LA following a lengthy illness. Ms. Calahan was a member of South Parkway Worship Center in Ruston. She had been employed by BellSouth of Ruston and retired from South Western Bell of Dallas, TX. Ms. Calahan was preceded in death by her parents, Claude A. and Lucile Gardner Calahan. Survivors include four sisters, Ruth Hargrove of Oakdale, LA, Merrie Ann Sears and husband Earl of Ruston, LA, Rachel Calahan of Ruston, LA and Maxine Grant and husband Clyde of Madisonville, KY; one brother, Claude A. Calahan, Jr. and wife Glynn of El Dorado, AR; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Ronnie St. John
Ronnie St. John, 59, of Warren, Arkansas died Monday, December 30, at his home. He was born August 27, 1943 in Warren, Arkansas, son of the late Dewey St. John and Ruth Arnette Reynolds St. John Martin. He was a retired construction foreman for Entergy Corporation and a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving him are two sons, Ron St. John, Warren, AR and Mark St. John, Choudrant, LA; two sisters, Montez Bryant and Donna Haygood, both of Warren, AR; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2003 at Ebenezer Cemetery near Warren. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 1 at Frazer's Funeral Home of Warren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Monticello.

Clyde Werner Aswell
Funeral services for Clyde Werner Aswell, 85, of Calhoun, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Calhoun. Officiating will be the Rev. Oda “Tuck” Roberts, the Rev. Neil Everett, the Rev. Clyde Sanchez and Dr. Michael Spears. Internment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Calhoun. Mr. Aswell was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Choudrant. He died at his home Wednesday, May 28, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He served many with kindness and love during his long life as an educator and minister. Mr. Aswell was principal at Quitman High School and a guidance counselor at both Calhoun High School and Ridgedale Academy. He shepherded churches in northeast Louisiana for 40 years. During World War II, he served as member of the National Guard and remained a proud member of Battery F throughout his life. Mr. Aswell was also a graduate of both Louisiana Tech University and Louisiana State University. Mr. Aswell was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Emory Aswell; his father, Clarence Werner Aswell; a daughter, Edith Anne Aswell Klos; two sisters, Vara Edminston and Olivia Bennett; and two brothers, W.L. Aswell and Howard Aswell. Though he served as a pastor and educator for much of his life, Mr. Aswell will be best remembered as a dedicated father and “Papaw Preacher” to his children and grandchildren. He leaves to cherish his memory -- and to remember his love and sense of humor -- his devoted wife of 61 years, Mary Elaine Taylor Aswell; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah and Butch Oaks; a son and daughter-in-law, C. Werner and Julie Aswell; eight grandchildren, Tonya and Keith Smith, Emerson Oaks, Emily and Jeffrey Housley, Kristen Oaks, Taylor Aswell and Kari Aswell; and one great-granddaughter, Marley Smith. Pallbearers will be Jerry Lovett, Lenard Johnson, Joe Purdy, Doyle Smith, James Futrell, Robert Giles, Ronnie Flurry, Roy Aswell, Regan Aswell and Wayne Aswell. Honorary pallbearers will be L. W. He is survived by his parents, John and Nellie Hancock of Farmerville, LA; his brother, John Paul Hancock of Farmerville, LA; his sister, Elaina Michael of Farmerville, LA; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be his cousins. Honorary pallbearer will be his brother John Paul Hancock. Margaret "Jimmie" Sanders Aycock
A celebration service for the life of Margaret "Jimmie" Sanders Aycock, 91, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Grace United Methodist Church in Ruston. Officiating will be Dr. Wayne Evans and Dr. Doug McGuire. Services are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Burial will follow in Pines Memorial Gardens in Ruston. Mrs. Aycock was born in Winn Parish on August 14, 1911, and attended La. Normal College in Natchitoches where she received her teaching certificate. She was a school teacher in early adulthood and in her later life a talented florist. Mrs. Aycock was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church where she faithfully attended for 53 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and a member and past president of the Cosmos Club of Ruston. Mrs. Aycock was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Seaborn Ray Aycock, Sr. She is survived by her son, Ray Aycock and his wife Betsy of Flora, MS; her daughter, Jan Steinkamp and her husband Mike of Baton Rouge, LA; four grandchildren, Karen Spencer and her husband Chris of Baton Rouge LA, Kelly Malatesta and her husband Matt of The Woodlands, TX, Richard Purcell of Washington, D.C. and Susan Aycock of Houston, TX; three great grandchildren, Caroline Spencer of Baton Rouge, LA, MacKenzie and McKay Malatesta of The Woodlands, TX. Services for Dr. Eddy A. Haynes, 59, of Phoenix, AZ will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003 in the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Burn Page. Interment will be in Sibley Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Dr. Haynes died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in Phoenix, AZ following a lengthy illness. Dr. Haynes received his Bachelor and Masters degree from Louisiana Tech University and his Doctorate from Louisiana State University. He was an Ordained Minister of Administration and worked in several churches throughout Louisiana. Dr. Haynes was an Educational Consultant for Quality Schools. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Shirley Norris Haynes of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Elizabeth Haynes Drewett and husband C. P. Drewett, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; one grandson, Langdon Drewett; two brothers, Maxie Haynes of Malvern, AR and Glynn Haynes of Shongaloo, LA; one sister, Pat Midkiff of Alexandria, LA; and several nieces and nephews. Larry Joe White
Mr. Larry Joe White was born on October 24, 1951 in Simsboro, LA. He was the seventh child born to Mrs. Vera Scott White and the late Mr. Limous White, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mrs. Charlotte White, Grambling, LA; his mother, Vera White; one daughter, Miss Manita Rochelle White; three grandchildren; five sisters, Ada, Shirley, Burnestine, Carerosebia, and Audrey; three brothers, Kenneth, Donald and Aubrey; mother-in-law, Sallie Boughton; and a host of other relatives and friends. He departed his earthly home on Sunday, May 18, 2003 in Lincoln General Hospital. Three brothers preceded him in death, Mr. Eric Leonard White, Mr. Limous White, Jr. and Mr. Samuel White. Interment will be in Mineral Springs Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Johnson died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in Ruston, LA following a brief illness. She was a native and longtime resident of Lincoln Parish and a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, R. B. Johnson. Survivors include one son, Charlie Johnson and wife Patty of Sugarland, TX; three grandsons, Keith Johnson and wife Renee' of Dripping Springs, TX, Kevin Johnson and wife Stacey of Austin, TX and Steven Johnson of Sugarland, TX; six great grandsons; one sister-in-law, Lucille Williamson of Choudrant LA; one brother-in-law, Don Johnson of Seattle, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. John Matthew Leonard Tellis
John Matthew Leonard Tellis was born to Mr. John E. Tellis, Jr. and Mrs. Nakita Moore-Tellis on January 7, 1999. He departed his life on May 14, 2003. He also leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, J'Maiyah V. Tellis and Kristen Hammock; grandparents, Virginia Moore, Reba Daniel (Bobby), Milton Younger, Rev. John E. Tellis (Hilda); and great grandmother, Mrs. Ann C. Funeral services for Robert Lloyd Huff, 65, of Quitman, LA were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003 in the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro. Officiating was Bro. James Moss. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery in Quitman under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Huff died Sunday, May 18, 2003 in Glenwood Medical Center. Mr. Huff was born in Troy, IN on July 21, 1937. He was a retired Tour Foreman for Stone Container Corporation, and was a Veteran. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Gene and Eddie Huff. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Nunn Huff of Quitman, LA; one daughter, Trish McLean and husband Phil of Denham Springs, LA; one step-son, Shelby Green of Longview, TX; two brothers, Jim Huff of Seymour, IN and Morris Huff of Port Charlotte, FL; one grandchild, Andy McLean; and two step grandchildren, Zach and Gavin Green. Bernice F. Shell, Jr.
Bernice F. "Bernie" Shell, Jr., of Asheville, North Carolina, and a long time resident of Houston, Texas went to live forever with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 17, 2003. He was at home with "Nancy Lou," his beloved wife and best friend, at his side. He was born in Ruston, on July 9, 1933 to the late Bernice F. Shell, Sr. and Alverne Wages Shell. He graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. Bernie retired in 1998 as President of Peter Paul Petroleum in Houston. He was a Lifetime Member of the University of Houston Alumni Organization and a member of Arden Presbyterian Church in Asheville. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Louise Shell; his brother, Ed Shell, and wife Jane, of Ruston; children: Shawn Baker, and husband Don, of College Station, TX., Michael Shell of Spring, TX., Tom Shell of Ruston, LA., Melissa Smith, and husband Billy, of Willis, TX., Scott Smith, and wife Pamela, of Kingwood, TX. and Susy Smith, and husband Brad, of Houston, TX.; grandchildren: Ashley and Brent Shell, Austin Smith, Tim and Luke Smith, and Zachary and Parker Smith. Services for Wade L. Harkins, 99, of Hico, LA will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the Hico Baptist Church in Hico, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Dick Paige assisted by Rev. Barry Joyner. Interment will be in the Henry Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Harkins died Sunday, May 18, 2003 in Farmerville following a brief illness. Mr. Harkins was retired as the Water Superintendent for the town of Bernice. He was a member and Deacon at Hico Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Theo Stewart Harkins and son, David Harkins. Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Trammell and husband Al of Dubach, LA; grandchildren, Alan Trammell, Melanie Harkins, Brian Harkins and Julie Harkins; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Mineral Springs Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Odie Lilley died Friday, May 16, 2003. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and was a student and worked at Jefferson Corner. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James D. Lilley and aunt, Debra L. Martin. Survivors include parents, Gary and Donna Lilley; brother, Randall Lilley; sister, Jessica Lilley; paternal grandmother, Helen Lilley; maternal grandparents, Steve and Obelene Randall; aunt, Sue Billberry and husband Will; uncle, Ferrell Martin and wife Jeannie, all of Mineral Springs. Thomas Frank Jones, Jr.
A memorial service for Thomas Frank Jones, Jr., will be held Sunday, May 18, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Downsville, LA. Family visitation at the church will be from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Frank was a retired school teacher, having taught in Ouachita and Union parishes. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Downsville Masonic Lodge #143, and Barak Shrine Temple. Known to his family as Pop, he is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters, Terri Russell, son-in-law Dennis, Traci Tucker, son-in-law Laymond; five grandchildren, Jeremy Hinton and wife Kellie, Steven Hinton, Heath Hinton, Cindy Tucker, and Matt Tucker; three step grandchildren, Derek, Lindsey and McKensey Russell; and three special friends, Stanley Hinton, Jacob McLeod and Lloyd Salter. Fred H. Wise passed away May 9, 2003 in Dallas, TX. He was born June 20, 1950 in Greenville, North Carolina. Fred is survived by his wife and loving partner of 31 years, LaDean, of DeSoto; two daughters, Michele Chandler and husband Bradley of Navarre, Florida, Crystal Kapuscenski and husband Daniel of Okinawa, Japan; grandchildren, Rachelle, Mallory, Nicole and Payton; mother, Vivian Wise of Arcadia, LA; sister, Deathra Van Scoy; and brother, Burt Wise. Fred was a Marine veteran and served from 1969-71. He was a Senior Food Manager with AAFES in Dallas. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2003 at Southwest Baptist Church, 1136 W. Belt Line Road in DeSoto, TX. Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 17, at the Simsboro Cemetery in Simsboro, LA. Sula (Sue) Canterbury of Kingsland, Texas passed away Monday, May 12, 2003. Sula was born in Alabama to John T. and Hettie Pearson on May 31, 1905. She spent most of her life in Lincoln Parish. Sula was a member of the First Baptist Church of Simsboro. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lamb and husband George of Highland Haven, Texas; three grandsons, Mark Lamb of Lubbock, Texas, Gary Lamb and wife Kathleen of Lexington, Texas and Kenneth Lamb of Hunt, Texas; three great grandchildren, Elisabeth, Nancy and Jacob Lamb of Lexington, Texas; one sister, Jewel Ingram of West Monroe, Louisiana; and many nephews, nieces, great nephew and great nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Francis A. Daniel and Jesse C. Canterbury; two brothers, J. E. Pearson and T. J. Pearson; four sisters, Viola Bailey, Madge Easter, Daisy Boyd and Virginia Henderson. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 3 p.m. May 17, 2003 at Owens Memorial Chapel with a graveside service to follow at 4:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Ronnie Nolan
Services for Ronnie Nolan, 55, of Ruston, will be held today at 4 p.m. at graveside with Dr. T. David Willetts and the Rev. Tuck Roberts officiating. Interment will be in Culbertson Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Nolan died May 9 in Ruston. Mr. Nolan was a lifelong resident of Ruston. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He had worked at Porter Chevrolet for 19 years and the Ruston Country Club for 9 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lurie and Elwanda Nolan and brother Larry Nolan. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Bonnie Nolan of Ruston; his brother, Jimmy Nolan and wife Dianne of Culbertson Community; and two nieces, Carrissa Martin of Culbertson Community and Nikki Chennault of Columbia, SC. Other survivors include aunts, Daisy Nolan of Sardis Community and "Happy" Bagwell of Dubach and uncle, Willie Portman of Monroe. Pallbearers will be George Price, Chad Jameson, Chad Carter, Nathan Perot, Bard Lomax, Chris Brister and Chaz Cobb. Honorary pallbearer will be special friend Joe Stanfield. Family received friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Ronnie was known for his sense of humor and for helping young people of Ruston find employment, especially Louisiana Tech students.

Videll H. "Mamaw" Upshaw
Videll H. "Mamaw" Upshaw, 71, of Spearsville, LA died Saturday, May 10, 2003 at her residence following a brief illness. Born November 26, 1931 in Epps, LA, she was the daughter of Quincy Miles and Myrtle Thresa Stanfield Hale. She was a registered nurse having worked at several hospitals and retiring from Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston, LA, in 1991. Mrs. Upshaw was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spearsville. She is preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, James Wilbur Upshaw of Spearsville; two sons, Randy Upshaw and his wife Jo of Centerville, MS and Eddie Upshaw and his wife Pei Sah of Landover, MD; and two daughters, Nancy Taylor and her husband Tim of Spearsville and Sallie Bittick and her husband Chris of Ruston. Also surviving is one brother, Floyd Hale and his wife Patsy of Epps, LA; and three sisters, Jean Comfort and her husband Elvin of Pearl, MS, Bertha Sullivan of Spearsville and Edith Shifflett and her husband Roy of Elkton, VA. There are ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Spearsville with Rev. Chuck Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Union Cemetery in Spearsville under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of El Dorado. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in El Dorado. Olan Brooks "Buck" Parrish
A celebration of life for Olan Brooks "Buck" Parrish, 82, of Ruston, LA will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Family and friends are invited to visit during this time. Mr. Parrish died Thursday, May 8, 2003 in Ruston following a lengthy illness. Buck was a Captain in the 487th Bomb Squad Army Air Corp in World War II. While serving as a B25 pilot, he flew over 80 missions in 5 Campaigns over the European Theatre. He was the recipient of the Air Medal with 7 clusters and 2 distinguished flying crosses. Buck retired from Ryan Chevrolet after over 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Marie Parrish of Ruston; one daughter, Mary Kay McLeland and husband Mickey of Ruston; one son, Mark Parrish and wife Skye of West Monroe; and grandchildren, Jessica Sutton, Luke, Spence and Patrick Parrish. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thelma Allene O'Neal
Thelma Allene O'Neal, 72, of Choudrant, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 in Ruston following a lengthy battle with cancer. Thelma was born on July 25, 1930. She is the daughter of the late James Roy and Bessie Whatley Fletcher. On October 11, 1947, she was married to William Allen O'Neal, Jr., out of which seven children were born. Thelma, a faithful member of Alabama Presbyterian Church, enjoyed singing in the choir and her Circle #5. She will be greatly missed by friends and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Bessie and Roy Fletcher, sister Charlotte Fletcher, daughter Sharon Allene O'Neal and son, Danny Fack O'Neal. Survivors include her husband, William Allen O'Neal, Jr.; daughter, Patricia A. Stanton of Houston; son, Ricky L. O'Neal and wife Brenda of Downsville; daughter, Sherryl L. Dunlap and husband Jim of Bernice; daughter, Johnna M. Murad and husband Philip of Houston; son David L. O'Neal of Choudrant; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Gloria Pesnell and Jerry Andrews; brothers, Morris and James Fletcher; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services for Thelma will be at Alabama Presbyterian Church on May 9, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Robert Weathersby officiating. Services are under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ruston. Pallbearers for the services are Jim O'Neal, Robert Davis, Jeff Adams, Mike Davis, Kelly Otts, and Clay Pilgreen. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Penuell, Jim Norred, Bobby Chandler, and Circle #5 of Alabama Presbyterian Church.
