Services for Lynn Ellen Hart Houck, 52, of Hico, LA will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 in the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church in Hico, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Jennings and Rev. Jon Lord. Interment will be in McCormicks Cemetery in Chenier Drew Community under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Houck died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in Hico, LA. Mrs. Houck was a member of Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Rhoda Flores and Latricia Perritt. Survivors include her husband, Ricky L. Houck of Hico, LA; one daughter, Lisa Ferreira of Canada; one son, Shannon Harkins of Monroe, LA; parents, Preston and Dorothy Hart of West Monroe, LA; two brothers, Scott Hart of Monroe, LA and Clark Hart of West Monroe, LA; three sisters, Betty Boyce of Tyler, TX, Kathy Hart of Houston, TX and Sandy Deblois of Ft. Services for Opal Woods Harper, 80, of Ruston, LA, former resident of Crossett, AR, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003 in the New Life Assembly of God in Ruston. Officiating will be Pastor Paul Pepper assisted by her nephew, Rev. Randy Rutledge. Interment will be in the Crossroads Cemetery in North Crossett, AR with graveside services at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Harper died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in Monroe, LA following a brief illness. Mrs. Harper was a member of the New Life Assembly of God in Ruston and a former member of First Assembly of God Church in Crossett, AR. Survivors include three sons, Jerry Woods and wife Gloria of Kingwood, TX, Larry Woods and wife Jackie of Crossett, AR and David Woods and wife Shirley of Ruston LA; brother and sisters, Culis H. Hill, Mildred H. Ticer and Mary Ailine Brown, all of Memphis, TN; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Ardistine Fowler Beasley
Services for Marty Beasley will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. Due to the renovation of First Baptist, services will be held at Temple Baptist Church, with Dr. Chris Craig, Dr. Andy Johnson, Rev. Mike Benefield, and Dr. T. David Willets officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Marty was born in Ruston on November 24, 1942 and was the daughter of Eunice Renfrow Fowler and the late Drew Ardis Fowler. She was preceded in death by her brother Drew John Fowler. She is survived by her mother, Eunice Fowler; her husband Don Beasley; daughters Leah Katherine Beasley and Laura Beasley Jones and husband Jason; sister, Liz Fowler Hood and husband Ivin. She will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Marty was a native of Ruston. She graduated from Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech University and earned a master's from LA Tech and doctorate from Purdue University. She worked as a Professor of Speech at LA Tech until 1984. Marty lived to help others. She was active in many community organizations, including AAUW, Arts Club, Mayor's Commission for Women, D.A.R.T., Girl Scouts, 4-H, LifeChoices Crisis Pregnancy Center, Phi Delta Kappa, and several education organizations. She served for 25 years on the Lincoln Parish School Board and was a lifelong active member of First Baptist Church. Those who knew her will remember her loving, selfless spirit and many acts of Christian service and love. Pallbearers will be Larry Banks, Troy Beasley, Mike Hilton, Gerald Long, Ray Newbold, Clyde Posey, Dr. Charles Scriber, and Frances Stephenson. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Lincoln Parish School Board. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or D.A.R.T. Services for Avis Hughes Sanderson, 62, of Choudrant, LA will be conducted at 3 p.m. June 2, 2003 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel, Ruston, with Revs. Bill Sanderson and Brad Jones officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Ruston. Mrs. Sanderson died Saturday, May 31, 2003 in West Monroe following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Sanderson was a native of Jackson Parish and longtime resident of Choudrant. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Choudrant She was preceded in death by her husband "Buck" Sanderson. Survivors include her son, Mike Sanderson and wife Virginia of Choudrant; daughters, Pat Leachman and husband Skip of Ruston, Vickie Green and husband Junior of Dubach and Karen Poche and husband Edward of Choudrant; grandchildren, Steven, Angie, Robert and Justin Sanderson, Natalie Bennett, Randall and April Pye, Stephanie Dutton, Kathy Butler and Amanda Poche; brother, J.W. Thurmon Ray Watson, Sr.
Graveside services for Mr. Thurmon Ray Watson, Sr. will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 10:30 am in the Forest Park Chapel of Peace Mausoleum with Dr. Arthur D. Rockett of Deridder, LA officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 1, 2003 from 4-6 pm at the Rose-Neath Marshall St. Funeral Home. Thurmon Ray Watson Sr. of Tyler, TX was born April 9, 1921, in Claiborne Parish and was the son of Conver Green Watson and Ione Hays Watson, now deceased. Mr. Watson died at his home on May 29, 2003 and was a lifelong resident of Louisiana, until October 5th when he became a resident of Atria Copeland in Tyler, TX. He volunteered to serve his country in World War II and was in the 331st Engineers Corp, from April 1942 until Nov. 1945. He was employed by Mississippi River Transmission Corporation, retiring after 35 years in 1986. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Mary Schlernitzauer Watson, 3 sons and 1 daughter. They are: Thurmon Ray Watson, Jr. and wife Jan of Gulf Breeze, Florida; a granddaughter Melissa Barnes and husband Chet, three great grandchildren, Emma, Erin, and Davis of Forest, Mississippi; Russell Albert Watson and wife Patricia, grandson Trevor Watson of Fallbrook, California; Robert Green Watson of San Antonio, TX; Leda Rockett and husband Bryan, grandchildren Collin and Abigail Rockett of Tyler, TX; one sister, now deceased, Janelle Wineman of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and a sister Lynda Shepherd and husband, John of Yukon, Oklahoma; beloved aunts and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Prentice Johnson of Minden, Louisiana; Mrs. Cordelia Watson of Shreveport, Louisiana; Also a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for Emmett Long, 75, of Ruston, LA will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. Officiating will be Rev. Dale Oden and Dr. T. David Willetts. Interment will follow in Pines Memorial Gardens in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Long died Sunday, November 30, 2003 in Ruston following a lengthy illness. Mr. Long had been a resident of Ruston for the past 30 years and a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church. He had served as past president of The Kiwanis Club and had also served in the LA County Agents Association where he had received the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Long had also been active in the Lincoln Parish Cattlemens Association and the Lincoln Parish Fair Board. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bettye R. Long of Ruston; two sons, Scott Long and wife Lori of Columbia, SC and Stuart Long of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Jo Kathryn Quinn and husband Eric of Wimberley, TX; one sister, Octava Bridges of Texas City, TX; grandchildren, Casey, Austin, Michaela and Joseph Long, and Clinton Quinn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Harry L. "Bud" McCaskill, Jr., 78, of Bastrop and a former resident of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2003 at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston. Officiating will be Rev. R. E. Crow assisted by Bro. Sam Lamkin. Interment will be in Ansley Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. McCaskill died Monday, December 1, 2003 in Bastrop following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by one nephew, John McCaskill. Survivors include five nieces, Shirley Crow of Bastrop, LA, Sandra Austin of Monroe, LA, Teena Hyatt of Connecticut, O'Shannon McCaskill of California and Patricia McCaskill of California; and a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Wyatt Liner and Lela R. (Boddie) Liner; brothers, Wyatt Richardson Liner and Prentis Edwin Liner; sisters, Thelma Lela Atkins & Leslie Marie Stewart; and his wife, Billie Jean (Wheeler) Liner. J. T. was born and reared on a farm about two miles west of Ruston on McDonald St. He attended school at the Old Eastland Elementary School, where the Lincoln Parish School Board is now located, and Ruston High School. J. T. worked at various businesses in Ruston before leaving to work in the oil fields of East Texas. He worked in the oil fields from northern Montana to south Louisiana and Europe. He settled down on a farm in the Antioch community a few miles northeast of Simsboro in 1964 where he and his family raised cattle, chickens, horses and hunting dogs. The family thanks all caregivers and friends for your prayers and kindness during J. T.'s short illness. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Charles Bernard Fernandez was a production line supervisor with Smurfit-Stone Container Company, a resident of Simsboro, LA and a native of Donaldsonville, LA. He died on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at his home in Simsboro. He was 41 years of age. He is survived by his parents, Joe and Loretta Brazzel of Dubach, LA; brother, Tyler Brazzel of Dubach, LA; paternal grandmother Patricia and husband Mike Whitlow of Sharon, LA; maternal grandmother, Roxey and Willey Huey of Evergreen, LA; maternal grandfather, Roy Hastings and Melanie of Simsboro, LA; maternal great grandfather, Ed Snipe, Sr. of Ruston, LA; paternal great grandfather, Ernie and Dianne Faust of Bernice, LA; great grandparents, Willie Huey, Sr. and Sue of Dubach, LA. Ruth Lathan Staff
Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. And I go and prepare a place for you. I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:1-3. Sister Ruth Lathan Staff passed through the earthly phase of life on November 25, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe, Louisiana. She was 80 years old. Sister Staff was born on January 16, 1923 to Sister Mary D. Calhoun Lathan and the late Brother John Adam Lathan in the Spanish Lake Community in Natchitoches Parish. At an early age Sister Staff united with the Evergreen Baptist Church in Natchitoches Parish. After her marriage, she moved her membership to Mount Zion Baptist Church where she remained an active, faithful, and dedicated member until illness caused her to limit her physical presence at the church. Her organizational memberships included the NAACP, Grambling State University Alumni Association (Life Member), Royal Art Chapter No. 47 O.E.S. (Past Treasurer), Grambling Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated (Past President and Life Member), Mount Zion Deaconess Board (Past President), and the Grambling Unit of Retired Teachers. A graduate of Grambling State University, Sister Staff earned her master's degree from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama and completed her plus-30 work graduate work at both Grambling and Louisiana Tech Universities. A lifelong educator, Sister Staff began her teaching career in Natchitoches Parish and after teaching for a short period in the southern region of the state, she moved to Lincoln Parish. After teaching many years at Greenwood Elementary, she was one of the first African American teachers to integrate the faculty of Ruston Elementary. After over 30 years of service in education, she retired from the Lincoln Parish School Board. Although retired, Sister Staff continued to contribute to education through her work as a substitute teacher, tutor, and long-time chairperson of her church's Education Day Scholarship program. Sister Staff's father preceded her in death. However, she leaves the following to cherish her memories: her mother, Mary (now 103 years old); her aunt, Clora (now 98 years old); her husband of 54 years, Malvin; her daughters, Barbara and Mary; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Natalie; her assistant, Christina; and a host of other relatives, friends, and neighbors. Through her day-to-day life, through her professional career in education, and through her individual and community service carried out in her organizational and church affiliations, Sister Staff has positively impacted the lives of thousands of people. Her physical presence will be missed; however, her spiritual presence and her influence on others live on. Funeral services will be Monday, December 1, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Grambling, Louisiana. Visitation will be Sunday, November 30, 2003 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Our Christian Funeral Home in Ruston, Louisiana. During the visitation period, departure services will be conduced by Royal Art Chapter #47, O.E.S. at 4:30 p.m. and Omega Omega Services will be conducted by the Grambling Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. A quiet time is reserved for the Mount Zion Deaconess Ministry from 5:00 to 5:15 p.m.

Barbara Linn Sims
Services for Barbara Linn Sims, 69, of Jonesboro, LA were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at the Jonesboro United Methodist Church. Officiating was Rev. Stuart Sherman. Interment was in Gayla Traina Cemetery in Jonesboro under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Sims died Monday, November 24, 2003 in Jackson Parish Hospital. Mrs. Sims was a retired teacher and taught piano to scores of children in Jackson Parish. She was a longtime member of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class, and a former member of Les Beau Arts Club. She is survived by her husband, Don Sims of Jonesboro, LA; one daughter, Cindy Cole of Jonesboro, LA; one son, David Sims of Monroe, LA; and one grandchild, Brandon Cole of Jonesboro, LA. Pallbearers were Bill Jimmerson, Kimble Thompson, Sam Ledbetter, Joseph Howard, Marty Folden and Kenneth Folden.

Vann L. Pratt
Services for Vann L. Pratt will be held Wednesday, November 26th at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Clyde Fant officiating. Interment will be in Pines Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Pratt, 88, died November 24, 2003 at Lincoln General Hospital, Ruston, LA following a long illness. Mr. Pratt was born on August 3, 1915 in Bernice, Louisiana. He was educated in Bernice and is a graduate of Louisiana Tech. After completing 4 years of service as a Captain during WWII, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 14 years. In 1952 he became a self-employed business man and worked as a tax advisor in this area for thirty-nine years. He was a member of First Baptist Church for fifty-one years, serving as general secretary of the Sunday School and the financial committee for many years. Mr. Pratt was preceded in death by his parents, Lawton and Daucie Pratt. Survivors include his wife, Mignon Terral Pratt of Ruston; his daughters, Cherry Kirkpatrick and husband Vance of Nairobi, Kenya and Carolyn McFarland of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Cara Phillips and husband Mark of Morogoro, Tanzania, Kyle Kirkpatrick and wife Jackie of Skopje, Macedonia and Jeffery McFarland and wife Jennifer of Madison, Wisconsin; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, James Walter Pratt and wife Ola of Dallas, TX and John Paul Pratt of Madisonville, LA. Pallbearers will be Billy Pratt, John Pratt, John Rabb, Thomas Terral, Danny Terral, Kendall Terral, Caskey Terral, Mike Lawhon and Charles Alexander. Dr. Corinne Taylor Carpenter
Dr. Corinne Taylor Carpenter of Grambling, LA was called home to the Lord on November 20, 2003. Dr. Carpenter was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on October 4, 1916. In 1934, she entered Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated with a B. S. Degree in Secretarial Science in 1938. In 1940, she joined the staff at Alcorn A&M University where she served for 20 years as an administrator and faculty member. While there she held a variety of positions, including Bursar, Business Manager and Assistant Professor of Business. Also, while there she earned her Master of Science Degree in Business Education from Indiana University in 1955 and was selected as Teacher of the Year at the university in 1960. After a very successful career at Alcorn, she joined the faculty at Grambling State University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Business. With twenty years of college experience, Dr. Carpenter quickly became one of the most popular and successful professors at Grambling. She earned her Doctorate in Business Education in 1967 at Indiana University while rapidly rising through the professorial ranks to become a full professor. Her hard work was recognized by her peers and her students when she was selected Teacher of the Year in 1973. Dr. Carpenter was truly committed to the scholarly process and endeavored to keep her knowledge current by engaging in research in her area. In 1961, she co-authored a textbook entitled "College Typewriting". She continued to be productive throughout her career publishing articles and making professional presentations. She was very active in community service primarily through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Inc., two organizations which she truly loved. She was also very active with the American Association of University Professors, which she was instrumental in establishing at Grambling. She was also a member of the Grambling United League of Voters and other community and civic organizations. Her honor societies include Pi Omega Pi, Delta Mu Delta, Alpha Kappa Mu, Delta Pi Epsilon and Pi Lambda Theta. Dr. Carpenter was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pink Taylor; her sister, Eloise Taylor Clem; and her lovely daughter, Ivel Adair Craddock. There are many who sorrow because of her leaving, including her husband of 50 years, Mr. Aaron C. Carpenter; her niece, Dr. Nedra Clem Jackson and her husband, Dr. Edward R. Jackson of Baton Rouge, LA; her nephew, Mr. William W. Clem of New Orleans, LA, her step-son, Mr. William E. Carpenter and his wife, Betty of Jackson, Mississippi; and her step daughter, Mrs. Aryian C. Boswell and her husband, Samuel of Montgomery, Alabama; and many other relatives and close friends. Visitation will be held Monday at Miller Funeral Home in Ruston from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and at Lewis Temple C.M.E. Church, Main Street in Grambling, Louisiana on Monday, November 24 from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Lewis Temple C.M.E. Church, with viewing from 10:00 until service time, followed by graveside services and burial at Grambling Memorial Gardens.

Gary Stevens Gatlin
Services for Gary Stevens Gatlin, 57, of Jonesboro, LA were held Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro. Officiating was Bro. Dwayne M. Boudreaux. Interment was in Garden of Memories under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Gatlin died Friday, November 21, 2003. He was a Cable Repair Technician. Survivors include his wife, Tommy Jean Gatlin of Jonesboro, LA; one daughter, Sonya Freeman and husband Scott of Ruston, LA; one son, Steven Gatlin and wife Emily of Ruston, LA; two grandchildren, Amberly Freeman and Alli Freeman, both of Ruston, LA; one aunt, Sarah Gatlin of Hodge, LA; one uncle, Jim Ed Gatlin of Jonesboro, LA; and his mother-in-law, Mildred Rushing Ponder of Jonesboro. Pallbearers were Stanley Parker, Buddy Taylor, Jerry Ginn, Butch Garner, Roger Dark, and Jimmy Teat. Sterling Graham Andrews
Services for Sterling Graham Andrews, 91, of Ruston, LA will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. David Hastings. Interment will be in Cook Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Andrews died Thursday, November 20, 2003 in Shreveport. He was a lifelong resident of Lincoln Parish and a longtime member of The First Presbyterian Church of Ruston. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Etta Richardson Andrews of Ruston; one son, Keith Andrews and wife Pat of Lexington, KY; two daughters, Mary Etta Vanhoof and husband Julian of Stonewall, LA and Carol A. William "Bill" Garrison

Carl Shurte and Rev. Jerry Salisbury. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in West Monroe under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe. Mr. Garrison died Monday, November 17, 2003 at North Louisiana Rehab Hospital in Ruston, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, E. W. Garrison and Jean Pureer Hill; sister, Sherry Franks; and brothers, Jerry Wayne Garrison and James Marvin Garrison. Survivors include five children, KaCee Morgan Garrison, Kevin D. Garrison, John M. Garrison, Andrew C. Garrison and Lisa K. James L. (Jim) Penuell
Services for Mr. James L. (Jim) Penuell, 89, of Choudrant, LA will be held at 10:00 a.m. November 18, 2003 in the Alabama Presbyterian Church in Choudrant, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Weathersby assisted by Rev. Jack Bennett and Dr. Marshall Boyd. Interment will be in Sibley Cemetery, Choudrant, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Penuell died November 15, 2003 at his home in Choudrant following a lengthy illness. Mr. Penuell was born November 23, 1913 in Choudrant, LA. He was a member of Alabama Presbyterian Church. He was a WWII veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving in the European and African Theatres. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Polly Penuell of Choudrant, LA; one son, Richard Penuell and wife Jean of Hot Springs Village, AR; one daughter, Ann Patterson and husband Wayne of Ruston, LA; one sister, Elva Humphreys of Bastrop, LA; two step sisters, Martha Chandler and husband Lavon of Ruston, LA and Betty Tynes and husband Travis of Calhoun, LA; two brothers-in-law, J. K. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dubach, LA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Hunt Davis and son-in-law, John G. Fuller. Survivors include two daughters, Kittylu Fuller of Dubach, LA and Annette Lee and husband Jerry Lee of Oxford, MS; one son, Nicky Davis and wife Faye Doss Davis of Dubach, LA; one brother, Wylie Euel Davis of Pittsburg, TX; two sisters, Martha Corley of Jena, LA and Kathryn Rials of Reno, NV; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary S. Duchaney

Interment was in Shady Grove Cemetery in Haynesville under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home of Arcadia, LA. Ms. Duchaney died Saturday, November 15, 2003 in the Forest Haven Nursing Center in Jonesboro, LA. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and a very loyal Lady Techster fan. She was a Home Demonstration Agent with LSU Agriculture Center with 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Harvey Snelling. Survivors include two sons, Tim Duchaney of Arcadia and Tom Duchaney and wife Marilou of Lake Jackson, TX; one daughter, Emilie White and husband Eddie of Quitman, LA; seven grandchildren, Scott, Dana and Billy Duchaney, all of Lake Jackson, TX, Jeff White and wife Becky of Simsboro, LA, Ted White of Ruston, LA, Aimee Greer and husband Jay and Lacey White, all of Quitman, LA; six great grandchildren, Anna and Abbie Greer of Quitman, Jessie, Jake and Jeb White of Simsboro, and Emma White of Ruston.
