ANDOVER -- James Whyte, 73, died yesterday at Academy Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Whyte was a teacher at West Middle School in Andover until he retired.

He was born in Brattleboro, Vt.

He leaves wife Shirley A. (Seney) Whyte; daughter and son-in-law Heather A. Whyte-Kattas and Paul of Baskins Ridge, N.J.; sister Jessie Blazejewski of Northfield; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, William Black Medical Research Building, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, 710 W. 168th St., New York City, NY 10032-9982

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours are tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Burke Funeral Home, 390 N. Main St., Andover. Private burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

HAVERHILL -- Mildred A. (Collins) Emerson, 70, of Brandy Brow Road, died Friday at her home.
Born and educated in Haverhill, Mrs. Emerson worked in housekeeping for UNICO Co. at Lucent, retiring in 1997.

She leaves her husband of 51 years Alvan S. Emerson; sons Alvan S. Jr. of Haverhill, Douglas M. of Lancaster, Pa., and Jeffrey C. and wife Evelyn Y. of West Newbury; daughters and sons-in-law Darlene M. and Dean K. Fisher of Plaistow, N.H., and Gale L. and Robin J. Staples of Raymond, N.H.; brothers Mahlon A. Collins of Rochester, N.H., Leonard E. Collins of Lakeland, Fla., and Martin R. Collins of Haverhill; sisters Thelma L. Jodoin and Avis J. Ragust of Haverhill; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours are tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. Funeral services there will be Tuesday at 11 a.m., followed by burial in Linwood Cemetery.

William F. Gross

HAVERHILL -- William F. Gross, 84, of Bradford, died yesterday at Penacook Place Nursing Home.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., and educated in New Jersey, Mr. Gross worked for Individual Family Laundry, and owned and operated Imperial Cleaners in Haverhill and Portsmouth, N.H., retiring in 1990. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

Mr. Gross served in the Army during World War II as a staff sergeant. He was a member of Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford, Haverhill Elks Lodge 165 B.P.O.E., and Boston American Legion Post 0462.

The widower of Annie M. (McCabe), who died in 1999, he leaves his son William F. Jr. and wife Linda of Hopedale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made to American Lung Association, 200 Cummings Center, Suite 323A, Beverly, MA 01915.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours are tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m. at Linnehan & Son Bradford Funeral Home, 52 Salem St., Bradford. Funeral services there will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Hearts Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Londonderry, N.H.

Elisabeth M. Leary

MIDDLETON -- Elisabeth M. (Dandeneau) Carrell Leary, 86, of Middleton, formerly of North Andover, died yesterday in Methuen after a long illness.
Mrs. Leary was a teacher in the North Andover and Medford school systems for many years until she retired.

Born in Hawley, she was raised and educated in North Andover and graduated from Lawrence High School and Salem State Teachers College.

The widow of William Leary and Charles R. Carrell, she leaves son and daughter-in-law Charles John Carrell and Dorothy (LeColst) of Middleton; daughter Barbara J. Cotter of Methuen; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Barbara Burns of Methuen; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary Dandeneau.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 12 Kent Way, Byfield, MA 01922 or the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Patricia M. McNamara
Monday, August 5, 2002
HAVERHILL -- Patricia M. McNamara, 85, of 3 Windsor Street, died Saturday at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
Miss McNamara was the former associate director and chief statistician of the Framingham Heart Study until she retired in 1986. She wrote many professional studies related to her work, and was honored by the National Institute of Health in 1999.

Born in Haverhill, she graduated from St. James High School in 1935 and from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1939.

As a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, she transported patients to Boston and Holy Family Hospital for their treatments. She was also a communicant of St. James Church and a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Sodality of the Church.

She leaves sister Barbara A. McNamara of Haverhill, Virginia M. Good of Beverly Beach, Fla.; brother Francis X. McNamara Jr. and his wife Barbara A. (Johnston), of Pasadena, CA; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and close family friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Improvement Fund of St. James Church, 6 Cottage Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours are tomorrow at her late residence at 3 Windsor Street, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be Wednesday at noon at St. James Church, 67 Winter Street, Haverhill. Kathleen J. Noyes

HAVERHILL -- Kathleen J. (Zangari) Noyes, 57, died yesterday morning at her home in Haverhill after a long illness.
Mrs. Noyes worked in the Haverhill school system from 1967 until her retirement this year. She taught mathematics at the Hunking School in Bradford, served as a teacher advisor for the Academic Bowl team and helped plan the eighth-grade Washington trip for many years. In 1992, she was named Haverhill's Teacher of the Year.

She served as assistant principal at the Bartlett and Moody schools and then at Pentucket Lake School, where she also served as acting principal. She organized and taught several math workshops for Haverhill teachers.

Born and educated in Haverhill, she graduated from Haverhill High School in 1963 and was a member of Teachers of Tomorrow and the National Honor Society. She received a degree in education from Lowell State College in 1967 and then earned a master's degree at Fitchburg State College.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Teacher's Association, the Haverhill Education Association and All Saints Parish and was a former member of Saint Rita's Parish. She was also a bingo worker at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence.

She leaves husband Charles F. Noyes; daughter Christine Gagne of Methuen; mother Lena (St. Laurent) Zangari of Haverhill; brothers Herbert R. Zangari Jr. of Boston, Ronald L. and Michael R. Zangari, both of Haverhill; sisters Elizabeth Burns of Cape Coral, Fla., Maryanne Gucciardi of Burlington, Vt., Constance David of Cape Coral, Fla., Dolores Pacione of Plaistow, N.H., Lorraine Bilodeau, Patricia O'Connell, Carole Zangari and Cynthia Zangari, all of Haverhill; one granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 12 Kent Way, Byfield, MA 01922-1220.

Margaret Arakelian

LAWRENCE -- Margaret (Bashkioian) Arakelian, 68, died yesterday at the Lawrence General Hospital.
She was born in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mrs. Arakelian previously was a waitress at the Windsor Restaurant in Dracut for more than 20 years and recently worked as a driver for Diamond Taxi in Lawrence. She loved to go to the beach, going to the theater in Boston and dinning out. She also enjoyed traveling to Connecticut.

She leaves daughter Gail Farhadian of Lawrence; son Gary Farhadian of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements: Incomplete. The Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, is in charge.

Benneville H. Clark
Monday, January 20, 2003
GROVELAND -- Benneville "Ben" Hemming Clark, 74, died Saturday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
He was born in Newton where he was a postal carrier for many years. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Mr. Clark was a member of the Waltham Triad Lodge, the Triad Chapter, the Cryptic Council and past commander of the Gesthsemane-DeMolay Commandery No. 7, all in Newtonville. He was also a member of the Plaistow, N.H., American Legion Post No. 34 and a life member of the Georgetown VFW. He was the founder of the Northeast Antique Anglers' Show, a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court 103 in Boston and a founding member of the Boston Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Mr. Clark leaves sons Christopher M. of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Peter F. of West Newbury, David E. of Boxford and William F. of Essex; daughter Abigail Clark of Lake Forrest, Ill.; brother David W. of Wells, Maine; 11 grandchildren; and a nephew.

Richard H. Harden

SALISBURY -- Richard Holmes Harden, 90, of 26 Beach Road, died yesterday at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.
Born in Salem, N.H., he was a graduate of Salem, N.H., High School. During World War II, Mr. Harden had worked at the Portsmouth, N.H., Naval Shipyard.

He and his wife were the founders of the former Wonder Potato Chip Company in Salisbury.

Mr. Harden was a former trustee of the Long Hill Cemetery in Salisbury and had been a member of the East Parish United Methodist Church of Salisbury.

He leaves his wife of 63 years Ruth Bailey (Naylor) Harden; sons and their wives Russell T. and Marylou of Peabody, Thomas E. and Barbara of Newburyport and Robert W. and Susan of Pelham, N.H; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the East Parish United Methodist Church, Lafayette Road, Salisbury, MA 01952.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Elliott Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring at Long Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.
