Ruth Whitefield-Freedman
Thursday, April 26, 2001
Ruth (Hirschfeld) Whitefield-Freedman, 84, formerly of Andover and Lawrence, died Saturday, April 21 at Prescott House Nursing Home in North Andover.

Born and raised in Germany, Mrs. Whitefield-Freedman escaped the Holocaust and came to New York in 1942. She lived in New York City for 12 years before moving to this region.

Mrs. Whitefield-Freedman worked as a medical secretary in Lawrence for 30 years. She volunteered in the blood pressure clinic at North Andover Senior Center, and was an active member of Temple Emanuel in Andover and the Hadassah.

Members of her family include her husband, Dr. Joseph Freedman; daughter Peggy Whitefield Allosso; brother Fred; stepchildren Carol Garber, Sybil Freedman, Janet Myers and Robert Freedman; and two grandchildren. She was also the widow of Kurt Whitefield.

Services were held Monday at Temple Emanuel, 7 Haggetts Pond Road. Burial followed in Temple Emanuel Cemetery, Lawrence. Condolence calls were made at her former residence, 30 Andrew Circle in North Andover, through Wednesday evening, April 25.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or to Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Wallenberg Place SW, Washington, DC 20024.

Arrangements are by Goldman-Fisher Funeral Chapel, Malden.

Ethel A. Curtin
Thursday, April 26, 2001
Ethel A. Curtin, 78, died Thursday, April 19 at her home in North Andover.

Born in Dingwall, Nova Scotia, and educated in Newton, Mrs. Curtin moved to North Andover in 1948. She owned and operated Shawsheen Sunoco in Andover, which continues to be a family business.

Mrs. Curtin enjoyed traveling, playing cards, collecting shells at the beach, and being with her grandchildren. She was an accomplished cook and businesswoman.

She was the widow of John W. Curtin.

Members of her family include her sons and their wives John P. and Nicki of North Andover, Stephen and Deb of Londonderry, N.H., and Joseph and Kelly of Methuen; daughters Claire Cook of North Andover, and Tricia Curtin and Bryan Martin of North Andover, with whom she resided; sister Mary Hurley of Texas; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was mother of the late Brian Curtin.

There will be no calling hours.

May E. Elander

May E. Elander, 91, of Andover died Saturday, April 21 at Lawrence General Hospital.

Ms. Elander first worked at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Co. from 1931 to 1937. She then worked in the office, and became administrative assistant to the president of the Andover Companies for 41 years before she retired.

Born in Cambridge, she graduated from Punchard High School in Andover in 1927, Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y., in 1931, and also attended Catherine Gibbs School.

Ms. Elander was a member of South Church in Andover since 1924, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the board of trustees, a member of the Prudent Committee, the Two In One Group, and was a member and officer of the South Church Alpha Phi Chi.

She was also a member of the Andover Historical Society and Andover Village Improvement Society.

Members of her family include several cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St.

Clifton R. Milne
Thursday, May 3, 2001
Clifton R. Milne, 73, of Andover, died Monday, April 30 at Lawrence General Hospital.

Mr. Milne worked at the Bank of New England in Boston for 38 years before retiring in 1988 as a vice president and loan officer.

Born in Lawrence, he attended North Andover schools and graduated from Johnson High School in 1945. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1950.

He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. Mr. Milne was a 60-year member of First Calvary Baptist Church in North Andover, where he served as chairman of the board of invested funds, board of trustees and was a member of the Deaconate.

A prominent Mason, he was a member of the Lawrence United Masonic Lodge, AF&AM, and was past Worshipful Master of the former Tuscan Lodge, AF&AM, and the former Tuscan-Phoenician Lodge, AF&AM. He was also a member of the Merrimack Valley Daylight Lodge, AF&AM, and a member of the Merrimack Valley High Twelve Club.

Mr. Milne was past District Deputy Grand Master of the Lawrence 11th Masonic District, Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts. He was a member of the Lawrence Lodge of Perfection, Princes of Jerusalem, where he served as past Sovereign Prince.

He was a member of Mount Calvary Chapter of Rose Croix, Valley of Lowell, and a member of the Massachusetts Consistory, Valley of Boston. He was also a member of Aleppo Temple, AAONMS in Wilmington. He received the Joseph Warren Medal and the 33rd Degree, the highest award in Scottish Rite Masonry.

Mr. Milne was the president of the board of trustees of the Berkeley Retirement Home of Lawrence. Since 1963, he has been a member of Andover Country Club.

Members of his family include his wife, Ethel (Dowe) Milne; son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Eileen F. Milne of New York City; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements were by Charles Dewhirst, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 33 Pearson St.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at First Calvary Baptist Church in North Andover. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Wendy Lee Roberts
Thursday, May 3, 2001
Wendy Lee Roberts, 47, of 22 Railroad St., died Wednesday, April 25 at home.

Ms. Roberts worked at Shriners, Massachusetts General, and Brigham and Women's hospitals, all in Boston.

Born in Winchester, she was educated in Reading and graduated from Reading Memorial High School. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts and a master's degree from Boston College.

Members of her family include her parents, Kenneth P. and Norma (Lindstol) Roberts of Exeter, N.H.; children, Erin, Elizabeth and Emily Daly, all of Andover; sister, Kim Beringer of Mooresville, N.C.; two nieces; a nephew; and former husband Dr. William Daly of Andover.

There were no calling hours.

Harold A. Walker
Thursday, May 3, 2001
Harold A. Walker, 80, of Andover, died Wednesday, April 25 at home.

Mr. Walker was a physical education professor at Northeastern University for 39 years before retiring in 1985.

Born and educated in Andover, he graduated from Punchard High School in 1938. He received a bachelor's degree from Bates College in Maine.

Mr. Walker served in the Marine Corps and saw action in the South Pacific and was involved in the assault and capture of the island of Iwo Jima in February 1945. He received the Purple Heart for wounds he suffered during that battle, and also received the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one star, World War II Victory Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation.

After the war, he served locally as commandant of the Lawrence Reserve & Recruitment Detachment. He retired in 1961 as a major.

Mr. Walker also served as an assistant football coach at Northeastern until 1963, retiring after their undefeated season that year.

He was a freemason and a member of Cochichewick Lodge AF&AM in North Andover.

Members of his family include his wife of 54 years, Eleanor T. (Whalen) Walker; daughters and sons-in-law, Dennie W. and Ronald K. Estell of Pelham, N.H., and Jodie and James D. McLellan of Burke, Va.; sons, Mark J. Walker of North Andover, and David J. Walker of Andover; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
