Cecile C. Bowerman, 87
Gift shop owner; innkeeper; model; manager at Filene's
SOUTH DENNIS - Cecile C. (Hotchkiss) Bowerman, 87, died yesterday at her home in South Dennis. She was the wife of the late John F. Bowerman. Mrs. Bowerman was born in Poland, N.Y., and raised in Randolph, N.Y. After high school she went to finishing school in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Mrs. Bowerman attended the Women's School of Fine Arts in New York City and the Cape Cod Secretarial School, graduating in 1956. She worked for Macy's in New York as a model, a sales clerk and tea room hostess. Mrs. Bowerman married and moved to Connecticut, where she worked as a linen buyer for the Mertz Co. of Torrington, Conn. Besides helping to manage her husband's restaurant in Litchfield, Conn., Mrs. Bowerman ran a government nursery during World War II in Bantam, Conn. After World War II Mrs. Bowerman moved to Cotuit, where she was a keeper at the former Cotuit Inn. In 1955 she moved to South Yarmouth and worked with the former E.H. Tuner Ice Cream Manufacturing company in Hyannis. Mrs. Bowerman opened her own linen and gift shop in Hyannis, selling it in 1963 when her husband passed away. She was the assistant manager of the Filene's store in Hyannis and in 1965 was transferred to the Boston store, where she worked for four more years before becoming a representative for the former Scaparelli ladies hosiery company. Mrs. Bowerman retired in 1975. She lived in Hull from 1976 to 1982 and moved to South Dennis in 1983. Mrs. Bowerman enjoyed reading, needlepoint, flower gardening and social gatherings. Surviving are a son, John Bowerman of Worcester; two daughters, Betsy Valle of East Dennis and Caroline W.B. Ewing of West Barnstable; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Arthur F. Smith, 73
Pilot; decorated WWII veteran; engineer; clubman
CHATHAM - Arthur F. Smith, 73, who worked for the former New England Telephone and Telegram for 35 years, died Wednesday at Liberty Commons Nursing Center. He was the husband of Jeanne L. (Augusta) Smith. Mr. Smith was born in Malden and raised in the greater Boston area. He graduated from Billerica High School in Billerica. He flew P-38s as a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was awarded the flying cross, an airman's medal with four oak leaf clusters and a presidential citation for valor. After the war, Mr. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. Mr. Smith was employed by the former New England Telephone and Telegram (now Nynex) in Framingham and Ashland, where he worked as a project engineer for many years. He was director of the construction budget for all of New England when he retired and moved to Chatham in 1983. While in Framingham he was a member of the Alpha Lodge AF & AM, a 50-year member and deputy past master of the Odd Fellows, past president of Fairs 'N' Squares square dancing club and past deacon of Park Street Baptist Church. He then moved to Ashland, where he lived for 28 years. Mr. Smith was a member of the Chatham Retired Men's Club in Chatham, the Chatham VFW and the First Congregational Church, Harwich. He loved flying and remained an active member of the P-38 Lightning Pilots Association and the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association. Mr. Smith enjoyed chess, fishing and electronic games and gadgets. Surviving besides his wife are three sisters, Barbara Clukey of Carriere, Miss., Marjorie Nilsen of Baltimore, and Priscilla Soule of North Dexter, Maine; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Lee Smith, who died in 1996. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham. Richard C. Hendee, 73
Former Hyannis resident; steel industry engineer
SPRING HILL, FLA. - Richard C. Hendee, 73, a retired engineer and former Hyannis resident, died Monday at his home. He was the husband of Roberta (Chagnon) Hendee. Mr. Hendee was born in Bogota, N.J. He lived in Hamilton, Mass., before moving to Hyannis in 1981. He moved to Florida eight years ago. Mr. Hendee served in the Navy and worked as an engineer in the steel industry before retiring. He was a member of the Timber Pines Golf and Country Club and the Hyannisport Club in Hyannis. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Richard Hendee Jr. of Freeport, Maine, and Bruce Hendee of Wexford, Pa.; a daughter, Jan Fuller of Woburn, Mass.; four grandsons and a granddaughter. Retired sales manager; World War II Army veteran
FALMOUTH - Kenneth Francis Major, 79, a retired retail sales manager, died July 23 at Falmouth Hospital. He was the husband of Mary E. (Hobert) Major. Mr. Major was born in Holyoke and graduated from Holyoke High School in 1936. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Major was the store manager at Longmeadow Albert Steiger and Co. in Holyoke, retiring in 1983. He was past chairman of the Retail Credit Association and the Commercial Board of Holyoke. He was director of the Holyoke Credit Bureau and of the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce, commercial division. Mr. Major was a member of the Elmwood Lodge, Beavers Club, Rotary and Holyoke Elks. Surviving are three daughters, Janet Beninato and Mary K. Devine of Longmeadow and Diane Shecrallah of Westfield. John C. Finglas, 68
Retired phone company manager; Army veteran
HYANNIS - John C. Finglas, 68, a retired New England Telephone employee, died July 25 at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary A. (Linehan) Finglas. Mr. Finglas was born and raised in Fall River. He summered in Portsmouth, R.I., while growing up. He graduated from Providence College and attended Georgetown Law School. He was drafted and served in the Army at the Pentagon during the Korean War. Mr. Finglas moved back to Fall River after being discharged. He moved to Boston in the mid-1950s, where he worked for New England Telephone Co. in the field for a short time before being moved to a management position. He moved from Boston to Mar-blehead in the early 1970s. He moved to Hyannis in 1985 upon his retirement from a budget and management position with New England Telephone. Mr. Finglas was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis and a member of the Hyannis Yacht Club. He enjoyed spending time at his vacation home in Balinsloe, County Galway, Ireland. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edward N. Finglas of Marblehead; a daughter, Maria Finglas of Hyannis; a sister, Elizabeth Silva of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. YARMOUTHPORT - Viola B. Police, 80, a Brockton native, died yesterday at the Cape Regency Nursing Home, Centerville. She was the wife of Frank E. Police. Mrs. Police was born and raised in Brockton. She attended Brockton schools. She was a cafeteria manager for the Brockton East Junior High School for more than 20 years. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Brockton and was a member of the Sons of Italy in Brockton. Mrs. Police moved to Cape Cod in 1980 after having lived in Brockton for most of her life. Surviving besides her husband are a son, Robert W. Police of Hyannis; a sister, Anna Alfieri of Brockton; and four grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Frank and Richard Police. YARMOUTHPORT - Catherine Howland (Paine) Morea, 75, a lifelong resident of Cape Cod, died Wednesday at her home after a long illness. She was the wife of Louis W. Morea. Mrs. Morea was born and raised in Wellfleet and educated in Wellfleet schools. She loved to quilt and cook. Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Lloyd Ellis and Dexter Ellis of Brewster and Wayne Morea of Yarmouthport; three daughters, Elaine Ellis of Brewster, Linda Williams of Yarmouthport and Carol Wood of Hawaii; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Richard 'Red' Greenfield, 67
Air Force retiree; musician; sportsman; lodge member
FALMOUTH - Richard C. "Red" Greenfield, 67, a retired Air Force master sergeant, died Monday at his home in Falmouth. He was the husband of Katherine (Peterson) Greenfield, who died in 1994. Mr. Greenfield was born in Worcester and served in the Air Force from 1951 until retiring as master sergeant in 1972. He was a 1983 graduate of Delaware State College and moved to Falmouth after he graduated. Mr. Greenfield worked for 11 years for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Woods Hole as a marine biologist. He was a member of the Marine Lodge, A.F.&A.M., in Falmouth and the Scottish Rite. He also was a member of the VFW in Falmouth and the Waquoit Congregational Church. Mr. Greenfield was an avid sportsman and musician. Surviving are a son, Robert A. Greenfield of Hyannis; three grandsons, Jonathan, Jason and Mark Greenfield, all of Falmouth; and several nieces and nephews. FALMOUTH - L. Norton "Nort" Hayward, 74, founder of the Eye Care Center in Seekonk, died Tuesday at his home. Mr. Hayward is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Burke) Hayward. Mr. Hayward was born in Worcester and lived in Smithfield, R.I., most of his life before retiring to Falmouth. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He founded the Eye Care Center in Seekonk and worked there until he retired. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Barnabas Memorial Episcopal Church, Main Street, Falmouth. Ronald N. Leutwyler, 80
Native of England; veteran of British army; liked music
BREWSTER - Ronald N. Leutwyler, 80, a retired Stanley Tool employee, died Monday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Katherine (Braithwaite) Leutwyler. Mr. Leutwyler was born in London, England, and attended Dulwich College there. He served in the British army during World War II as a radar technician. He moved to the United States in 1948 and began working for Stanley Works tool manufacturing company in New Britain, Conn. Mr. Leutwyler worked there for 30 years, retiring in 1984 and moving to Brewster. He was an avid "stereophile," enjoying music recordings. Surviving besides his wife are his stepmother, Marian Leutwyler of England; two sisters, Valerie Learmonth of Toronto, Canada, and Renee Bush of Sussex, England; a stepdaughter, Sally Buffington of La Jolla, Calif.; and two stepgrandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans. Burial is private. Joan M. O'Connor, 64
Former Sandwich resident; secretary to school treasurer
HINGHAM - Joan M. (Donovan) O'Connor, 64, who lived in Sandwich for five years, died at her home Tuesday after a long illness. She was the wife of David J. O'Connor Jr. and the late Thomas F. McManus. Mrs. O'Connor was born and raised in the Forest Hills and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods in Boston and lived in West Roxbury for 40 years. She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas School and later attended business school. She lived in Sandwich for five years before moving to Hingham a year ago. Mrs. O'Connor was secretary to the treasurer at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury for several years, beginning in the early 1970s. She was an active member of the Catholic Memorial High School Parents Organization when her eight sons attended school. Mrs. O'Connor was a past officer of the New England Hemophilia Association and, while living in Sandwich, was a member of the Thornton Burgess Society. Surviving besides her husband are seven sons, Thomas E. McManus of Dorchester, Brian C. McManus of Webster, Paul F. O'Connor of Franklin, Thomas J. O'Connor of Scituate, Mark J. O'Connor of Norwood, and Christopher D. O'Connor and Jay D. O'Connor, both of West Roxbury; and 20 grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Stephen J. McManus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon tomorrow at St. Theresa's Church, West Roxbury. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. Richard LaCouture, 67
Drug, alcoholism counselor; longtime member of AA
HYANNIS - Richard H. LaCouture, 67, a counselor for drug and alcohol addicts, died Saturday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. He was the husband of Glenna (Girard) LaCouture. Mr. LaCouture was born, raised and educated in Marlboro. He attended LaSalette Seminary in Enfield, Conn., and Rutgers University in New Jersey. He lived in Marlboro until moving to Hyannis in 1976. Mr. LaCouture served with the Army in Korea from 1950 to 1952 and was awarded two Bronze Service Stars. He worked as an employee assistance counselor for the Commonwealth Energy Service Co., a division of the Commonwealth Gas Co., for 35 years. Mr. LaCouture was a certified alcoholism counselor, a certified addiction specialist and a member of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association and treasurer of the central New England chapter. He was a former board member of the Marlboro Alcoholism Referral Center, and was a member of the community advisory board of Ad Care Hospital in Worcester. Mr. LaCouture belonged to Worcester Fights Back, and helped charter several organizations: the American Association of Eating Disorder Counselors, the Massachusetts Chapter of Children of Alcoholics Association and Cape Cod Crossover. He participated in many alcohol and drug conferences and seminars in the United States and Canada. He also was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 21 years. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, David W. LaCouture of Raybrook, N.Y., Paul R. LaCouture of Gulfport, Fla.; five daughters, Susan G. Pratt, Diane M. Orris, Carol L. Hinton, Sharon L. LaCouture, all of Hyannis, and Nancy J. Rocheteau of Centerville; two brothers, Donald V. LaCouture of Marlboro, John R. LaCouture of Oceanside, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Retired office manager; avid reader, world traveler
HARWICH - JeanPaul L. LaPlante, 81, died Saturday at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Ruth M. (Smith) LaPlante. Mr. LaPlante was born and raised in Worcester and graduated from Brockton High School in 1935. He began working at the former Jones and Vining Last Co. in Brockton. In the 1950s, he worked for the Stahl & Dean Co., a sports equipment company in Brockton where he became office manager. Mr. LaPlante moved from Brockton to Hanover in 1967. He received a certificate in business and accounting from the former Bentley College of Boston in 1972. Mr. LaPlante moved to Harwich upon his retirement from the Payne Co. of Belmont in 1981, after working there 10 years as office manager. He was an avid reader and world traveler who enjoyed working with wood as a craftsman. Surviving besides his wife are a brother, Claude R. LaPlante of Fripp Island, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Paulette Roberts, who died in 1966. Thomas G. Robinson, 87
WWII Army veteran; retired Realtor; avid boater, hunter
CHATHAM - Thomas G. Robinson, 87, a retired Realtor, died Wednesday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a short illness. He was the husband of Mary C. (Canniff) Robinson. Mr. Robinson was born and raised in New York, N.Y. He attended Columbia University there and Rutgers in New Jersey. He served with the 11th Army Tank Battalion under Gen. George Patton in the 10th Armored Division during World War II. Mr. Robinson spent his adult life in Montclair, N.J., until he retired and moved to Chatham in 1985. He was past president of the Montclair Board of Realtors, a senior member and past president of the Society of Residential Appraisers, the commissioner of the condemnation for the Superior Court of New Jersey, and he served on the local board for The Salvation Army in New Jersey. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Monomoy Yacht Club in Chatham and the Chatham Retired Men's Club. He was an avid boater, fisherman and hunter. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Anne A. Robinson of Chatham; a sister, Doris Sundstrom of Naples, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. All services are private. Kenneth Towers, 83
Retired IBM project manager; crafted model ships, clocks
SOUTH DENNIS - Kenneth T. Towers, 83, died Thursday at Brewster Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Vera Mae (Roarty) Towers. Mr. Towers was born in Brockton and graduated from Brockton High. He earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. He worked for IBM for 34 years, in offices in Baltimore, Md.; Norfolk, Va.; and Endicott, N.Y. He retired as a project engineering manager in 1970, and moved to South Dennis where he belonged to the Coast Guard Auxiliary until the mid-1980s. Mr. Towers enjoyed building model ships and grandfather clocks. He also enjoyed classical music, and played the piano and organ. Besides his wife, Mr. Towers is survived by two sons, David K. Towers of Harrisburg, Pa., Allan T. Towers of South Dennis; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one niece and one nephew. BREWSTER - Dorothy P. (Jordan) Staffon, 86, died Friday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. She was the wife Arthur H. Staffon for 65 years. Mrs. Staffon was born in Watertown and raised in Cambridge where she graduated from Cambridge Latin High School. A resident of Arlington for 35 years, Mrs. Staffon and her husband moved to Brewster in 1972 after having summered on the Cape for many years. They were members of the Cape Cod Chapter of the Mobil Annuitants Group. Besides her husband, Mrs. Staffon is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Grennell of Groton; a son, Peter W. Staffon of Brewster; a sister, Isabel Kelley, also of Brewster; and five grandchildren. Visiting hours are 4 to 7 p.m. today in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans. Office manager; worked to help feed the homeless
WHITMAN - Linda A. MacCurtain, 44, who leaves family on Cape Cod, died unexpectedly Friday while vacationing in Plymouth. She was the wife of Michael P. MacCurtain. Mrs. MacCurtain was born, raised and educated in Norwood. After graduating from Norwood High School, she went to work for the Star-Pierce Co. of Norwood, which is now known as M.S.P. Electronics Co., and was eventually named office manager. She was an active member of the Pine Street Inn Food Group of the Holy Ghost Parish in Whitman, an organization dedicated to feeding the homeless. Besides her husband, Mrs. MacCurtain is survived by her parents, Charles and Shirley McAuliffe of West Yarmouth; two sons, Matthew J. MacCurtain and Michael C. MacCurtain, both of Whitman; a daughter, Kathleen E. MacCurtain, also of Norwood; three sisters, Sandra Greene of Mansfield, Maureen Rinaldi of Plymouth and Susan Kuphal of Millis; two brothers, Joseph McAuliffe of Taunton and Richard McAuliffe of Northboro; and many nieces and nephews. She also was the mother of the late Colleen M. MacCurtain of Whitman. HARWICH - Hazel E. Bailey, 82, a longtime resident of Maine who leaves a son in Harwichport, died at her home in Harwich. She was the wife of the late Arnold E. Bailey. Mrs. Bailey was born in Maine and lived there until moving to Harwich 10 months ago. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Princeton, Maine. Mrs. Bailey enjoyed knitting and cooking. Surviving are a son, Roger E. Bailey of Harwichport; a brother, Ralph Henry of Lincoln, Maine; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services are private.

Mary Driscoll, 75
Married 50 years; moved to Dennisport in 1978
DENNISPORT - Mary (Morgan) Driscoll, 75, died Saturday at Eagle Pond Nursing Home, Dennis, after a long illness. She was the wife of Cornelius J. Driscoll for 50 years. Mrs. Driscoll was born in Springfield and lived there until moving to Dennisport in 1978. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich. Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Patricia Flowers of Key West, Fla., and Mary Driscoll of New York City; three sons, Peter J. Driscoll of Brewster, Thomas J. Driscoll of North Harwich and James G. Driscoll of West Harwich; a sister, Helen Anderstrom of Enfield, Conn.; and eight grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Holy Trinity Church, West Harwich. Burial will be private. Steven R. Wright, 43
Harwich mechanic; worked on Chatham NASCAR team
EAST HARWICH - Steven R. Wright, 43, a Vietnam veteran and mechanic, died Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. He was the husband of Barbara (Kerr) Wright of East Harwich. Mr. Wright was born in Pittsfield and raised in Hancock. He lived in Orleans from 1980 to 1985 and lived in Auburn, Maine from 1984 to 1995. He settled in East Harwich two years ago. In the Army, Mr. Wright served in the Vietnam War and in Germany and Korea. As a member of the National Guard, he served on Cape Cod and in Maine. Mr. Wright worked as a mechanic at the Goose Hummock Store in Orleans, as a foreman at M & P Auto in Auburn, Maine, and as a mechanic at Stagg Chevrolet in East Harwich at the time of his death. He was a pit crew worker for Meservey NASCAR Race Team of Chatham, and helped recondition Cushman Motorcycles with Bob Phillips in Harwich. Mr. Wright was a train collector and an avid Star Trek fan. He enjoyed tubing and boating and playing cards with his grandchildren. Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Bruce A. Wright of Frankfurt, Germany, Joshua S. Wright of Brewster, Jerimiah and Randy Wright, both of Orleans; a daughter, Kim Clark of East Harwich; his parents, John and Mary Wright of Hancock; three brothers, Timothy Wright of Hancock, John Henry Wright of Hancock and Fred Wright of North Carolina; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Roger Nickerson, 80
Cotuit plumbing, heating worker; fire team member
COTUIT - Roger M. Nickerson, 80, died yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. Mr. Nickerson was born in Cotuit. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Nickerson was employed in his family's business, V.H. Nickerson Co. Inc. in Cotuit, and worked on plumbing, heating and wells. He retired in 1992. Mr. Nickerson was a former member of the on-call team of the Cotuit Fire Department. Surviving are a brother, F. Merton Nickerson Jr. of Cotuit; a niece, Nancy Douglas of Centerville; and a nephew, Robert F. Nickerson Jr. of Marstons Mills. Services are private.

Emery St. George Jr., 76
Oceanographic engineer; worked for MIT, Cornell
EAST ORLEANS - Emery St. George Jr., 76, who dedicated much of his career to oceanographic engineering, died Sunday at his home. He was the husband of Lillian M. (Carney) St. George. Mr. St. George was born and raised in Newton. He graduated from MIT in 1943. He lived in Milton, Hingham and Duxbury before moving to East Orleans in 1983. Mr. St. George was an engineer with MIT from 1943 until the early 1950s. He worked for Cornell and St. George Inc. for some time. Mr. St. George also was an engineer for Charles Stark Drapper Laboratory in Cambridge from 1972 to 1984, devoting the last half of his career to oceanographic engineering. He retired in 1984. Mr. St. George was a member of the Quarter Century Club of MIT and the Marine Technology Society. He enjoyed writing articles for various technical publications on engineering. Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Richard E. St. George of Peterborough, N.H.; a daughter, Susan St. George of Montreal; a brother, Robert St. George of Berwin, Pa.; two sisters, Jane Thomas of Chatham and Nancy Larson of Hingham; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Orleans Cemetery.

Mary Lou McGonigle, 66
Avid golfer, bridge player; part-time Osterville resident
OSTERVILLE - Mary Lou (Mooney) McGonigle, 66, a part-time resident of Osterville, died Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Born and raised in Fall River, she graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., and from Bridgewater State College. A resident of Fox Hill in Westwood for the past year, Mrs. McGonigle lived in Wellesley for 34 years and in Osterville. She was an avid golfer and bridge player and belonged to the Oyster Harbors Club and the Wellesley Garden Club. Mrs. McGonigle also was a member of the Beach Club in Craigville, the Ace of Clubs in Boston and the Women's Junior League. She was a former member of the Falmouth Yacht Club. She was a communicant of St. Paul's Church in Wellesley. Suriving are two sons, Michael P. McGonigle of Boston and P. Mark McGonigle of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Maura Blake of Hingham; a brother, James F. Mooney Jr. of Boston; a sister, Patricia Denison of Larchmont, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. Eleanor Jenkins, 67
Waitress; formerly owned Orange Ladder in Sagamore
SANDWICH - Eleanor Theresa Jenkins, 67, died Sunday at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. She was the wife of the late Seymour ``Jack'' Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins was born in Brighton, where she graduated from St. Columbkille School in 1948. She moved to Cape Cod from Abington, where she lived for several years. Mrs. Jenkins worked as a waitress for many years in various restaurants, most recently the Tin Man Diner in Bourne and the Jade Chinese Restaurant in Mashpee Commons, Mashpee. She and her husband were the former owners of the Orange Ladder restaurant in Sagamore for many years. She also had worked as a waitress for the New Haven Railroad. Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Corpus Christi Parish in Sandwich. Surviving are three sisters, Joan Crowley of Brookline, Evelyn Sprague of Quincy and Frances Thiel of Brighton; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Daniel Mannion, 84
Enjoyed jogging, squash; supported Brockton YMCA
HARWICH PORT - Daniel J. Mannion, 84, a longtime Brockton resident who enjoyed jogging, died Sunday at his summer home in Harwich Port. Mr. Mannion is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bertha (Short) Mannion. Born and educated in Fall River, he moved to Brockton in 1940. He managed Cudahy Packing Company until 1955, then managed sales for Eastern Photo Supply. He retired from ACE Photographic Supply Co. in 1983. An active member and supporter of the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton, he led running classes and played squash. Besides his wife, Mr. Mannion leaves a daughter, Michaela Mannion-Baruzzi of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanore Kuss of Fall River, and Mary Elizabeth Tucker of Fairhaven. John A. McCullough, 76
WWII Naval radio specialist; retired insurance broker
CHATHAM - John A. McCullough, 76, a retired insurance company broker and a World War II Navy veteran, died Monday at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion in Hyannis after a long illness. He was married to Margaret M. (Marns) McCullough for 48 years. Mrs. McCullough died March 1. Mr. McCullough was a native of New York City and lived in the Bronx and in Yonkers, N.Y., before moving to Chatham in 1984. During World War II, he served in the Pacific as a Naval radio communications specialist aboard the minesweeper the USS Herald. Mr. McCullough was a broker in the Manhattan office of the Allstate Insurance Co. for more than 45 years, retiring in 1995. He was a 1972 graduate of Fordham University in New York City. Mr. McCullough was a member of the Irish Christian Brothers during the 1930s, and belonged to the Holy Redeemer Church of Chatham. He was an avid golf and loved sports and Chatham. Surviving are three sons, The Rev. Hugh ``Mickey'' McCullough of South Yarmouth, John McCullough of White Plains, N.Y., and Brian McCullough of Greenlawn, N.Y.; two daughters, Joanne Barry of Gaylordsville, Conn., and Maura McCullough-Fay of Old Greenwich, Conn.; and eight grandchildren. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the McGrath Funeral Home, 20 Cedar St., Bronxville, N.Y. Retired telephone operator; leaves son, daughter on Cape
WORCESTER - Mary A. (King) McArdle, 92, a longtime telephone operator, died yesterday in St. Francis Home, Worcester. She was the wife of William McArdle, who died in 1974. Born in Worcester, she lived in Quinsigamond village most of her life. She graduated from Classical High School. Mrs. McArdle worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone for many years. She was a founding member of St. Catherine of Sweden Church and was a past president of its Ladies Sodality. She is survived by a son, William J. McArdle of South Yarmouth and Newport Richey, Fla.; two daughters, Eileen R. Murphy of South Yarmouth and Newport Richey, Fla., and Mary E. Wall of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. John Cemetery, Worcester. Barbara E. Anton, 63
Registered nurse; worked with Sudbury Campfire Girls
SUDBURY - Barbara E. (Yorke) Anton, 63, a Sandwich resident, died unexpectedly Monday at the New England Deaconness Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Michael Anton. Born in Cambridge, Mrs. Anton graduated from Brighton High, Boston University and Mount Auburn School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for many years. She lived in Sudbury for more than 27 years before moving with her husband to Sandwich in 1996. Mrs. Anton was a longtime active member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Sudbury and a volunteer with the Sudbury Campfire Girls. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Beth C. Anton of Burlington, and Judy Anton Schryver of Franklin. She also was the mother of the late Nancy S. Anton, who died in 1991. Visiting hours are tomorrow from 4-8 p.m. at the Duckett Funeral Home of J.S. Waterman & Sons, 656 Boston Post Road (Route 20), Sudbury.
