William J. Loughran
William J. Loughran, 92, died October 6 at home.
Mr. Loughran worked for the Rexall Drug Company as an administrator before his retirement in 1973. He was also a feature writer for the Milton Times, Milton Transcript, Dorchester Irish Echo and the Patriot Ledger.
He was a member of the Milton Historical Commission, and the Boston Latin School and Harvard University Alumni Association. He volunteered at the Captain Forbes House on the Lincoln Committee, the Milton Hospital and the Milton Times editorial staff.
He was the founder and first president of the Milton Art Association and was a past vice president of the Milton Historical Society.
He was named a distinguished member for life of the Blue Bell Tavern Society, was nominated as 1990 Citizen of the Year by the Milton Town Club, was chair of the Milton Bicentennial Committee in 1976 and was a pianist for Baron Hugo's "Miltones," the Milton Glee Club.
Mr. Loughran was an avid historian.
He was born in Boston and lived in Dorchester before moving to Milton 41 years ago. He was a 1929 graduate of Boston Latin School and a 1933 graduate of Harvard University.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice R. (Connerton) Loughran; a brother, Joseph A. Loughran of Weymouth; a sister, Mary Kathleen Carey of Weymouth, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 10 at St. Agatha Church. Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.

Ruth V. Klehm
Ruth V. (McCabe) Klehm, 86, of Quincy, died October 7 at Quincy Medical Center.
Born in Boston, she grew up in Dorchester and was a graduate of Dorchester High School for Girls. She moved to Milton in 1942, then to Quincy in 1979.
She was the wife of the late William L. Klehm, she is survived by a son William L. Klehm Jr. of Rhode Island; two daughters, Susan K. Brown of Ipswich and Constance A. Burns of Maine; seven grandchildren, and two-great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 11 at St. Agatha Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by Dolan Funeral Home.

Paul A. Costello
Paul A. Costello of Mashpee, a former Milton resident, died October 6 at home.
Mr. Costello owned Costello's Pub in Waltham for 44 years.
He served in the Marines and was a veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the New Seabury Country Club, Mashpee, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dorchester.
He was born in Boston, grew up in Dorchester. He was a resident of Milton for 30 years before moving to Mashpee two years ago.
He graduated from Dorchester High School for Boys.
He was a former all-scholastic football player.
Mr. Costello is survived by his wife, Catherine "Cappy" (Freeman) Costello, two sons, Paul Costello Jr. and Francis X. Costello, both of Milton; three daughters, Sheila Byron and Mazie Colton, both of Milton, and Katherine B. Morrissey of Hingham, and 13 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 9 at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.

Alfred W. Hayes
Alfred W. Hayes, 90, of Milton, a retired fleet safety supervisor for Boston Edison, died October 5 at Milton Hospital.
Mr. Hayes was a World War II Navy veteran. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
He was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8699 and a member of BEARA, Edison Retirees Association.
He was born in Boston and lived in Milton for 90 years. He was a graduate of Milton High School and Wentworth Institute, Boston.
Husband of the late Josephine F. (Drady) Hayes, he is survived by two sons, Robert J. Hayes and William Hayes, both of Florida; a sister, Alice Kansevich of Florida; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 10 at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.

Rev. Thomas E. MacLeod
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 25, for Rev. Thomas E. MacLeod, former Pastor of St. John's Parish Peabody and Associate Pastor of St. Brigid, Lexington; St. Elizabeth, Milton; St. Joseph, Roxbury; St. Eulalia, Winchester; and the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Wakefield. He was 72.
Fr. MacLeod was widely recognized as the catalyst for the Catholic Church involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the Massachusetts ecumenical movement. In 1964, he was personally invited by the Rev. Martin Luther King to participate in a sit-in at a North Carolina restaurant.
Pulitzer Prize winning author, J. Anthony Lucas documented his activities in his book, COMMON GROUND saying, "Father MacLeod and Father John Fitzpatrick-were arrested trying to integrate a restaurant in Williamston, NC. The Shamrock Cafˇ - the name rang ironically back in Boston - was just a few yards down the road from the spot where Protestant clergy had been arrested six months before. MacLeod and Fitzpatrick were the first American priests ever to be arrested for Civil Rights activity." Fr. MacLeod committed his life to civil rights and ecumenical causes. He served as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches from 1975-1981.
In 1963, he served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Fair Housing Federation and as a delegate to the President's Committee on Housing in Washington, D.C. During his eight-year assignment in St. Joseph's Church in Roxbury, he co-directed the construction of St. Joseph's Home, a 140 unit cooperative housing development for low-income residents. This is the only low- income, tenant-run housing cooperative in the nation that remains successful.
A native of Norwood, Fr. MacLeod also served as Executive Secretary of the Massachusetts Commission on Christian Unity from 1973-1981 where he pursued his interests in ecumenical unity.
He was a 1948 graduate of Mission High School in Roxbury and received his BA and MA from St. John's Seminary in Brighton. He served with the rank of Lt. Commander in the US Navy Reserve from 1961-1972.
Fr. MacLeod was the son of the late Thomas E. MacLeod, Sr. and M. Gertrude (Fay) MacLeod. He is survived by two sisters, Patricia Pulling of Leslie, MI and Jay Mecklenberg of Marysville, WA; two brothers, Col. Richard P. MacLeod of Colorado Springs, CO and Roger C. MacLeod of Norwood, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John J. MacLeod of Norwood.
Fr. MacLeod will lie in state at St. Catherine of Sienna Church Chapel, Nahatan St., Norwood, on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 7 - 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 549 Washington Street, Norwood, on Friday, Oct. 25, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, Norwood.

Simone McLellan
Simone McLellan, 79, died October 13 in the Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.
Born in France, she grew up there during WW II and lived in Milton for the past 45 years.
She is survived by her husband Arthur L. McLellan; six daughters, Michelle Correia of New Hampshire, Deborah Ramage of Milton, Anne Ruopp of Georgia, Barbara Brooks of Texas, Cheryl Silbert of Hanson and Leslie Cronin of Dedham; 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at the Hamel, Wickens and Troupe Funeral Home in Quincy on October 16.

John E. Smith
John E. Smith, 82, died October 14 at the Milton Health Care Facility after a brief illness.
Mr. Smith was born in Scotland and moved to Dorchester at the age of three.
He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s before he served in the army. He was a WW II Army veteran of the European and African Theaters.
He was a route salesman for Pilgrim Laundry Company and a member of the Teamsters Local #25. He later became a guard for The Recording and Statistical Corporation and MIB, Inc. He retired in 1997.
Mr. Smith was a lieutenant with the Milton Police Auxiliary Police Department for 25 years. He was the grand master of the Gate of Temple Lodge, A.F. and A.M. of which he was a 49 year member.
He is survived by four daughters, Jeanne Larkin of Milton, Dianne McCullough of Florida, Janet Alexis and Barbara Sugarman of New Hampshire; four sons, Bruce Smith of Pembroke, Craig Smith of New Hampshire, Glenn Smith of Quincy and Scott Smith of Roslindale; and a dear friend, Marie C. Flaherty of Milton.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 18 at St. Mary of the Hills Church. Burial was in the V.A. Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Marie Louise Wye
Marie Louise (Ouelette) Wye, 86, of North Quincy, died October 11 at the John Adams Continuing Care Center in Quincy.
Born in Lowell and raised in Dracut, she graduated from the St. Louis School and Academy in 1931 and Lowell Commercial College.
Mrs. Wye was a legal assistant for Fidelity Management and Research Co. of Boston.
She was a member of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Guild and the Quincy Chapter of the Great Books Club.
She was a member of St. Agatha Church for 50 years.
She was the wife of the late James A. Wye, she is survived by three daughters, Barbara W. Marcks of Lincoln, Pamela Wye Hunsinger of New Jersey and Deborah Wye of New York; a sister, Annette Ouelette of Ohio; two brothers, August Ouelette of New Hampshire and Alfred Ouelette of Florida; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 15 at St. Agatha's Church. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Paul F. Ryan
Paul F. Ryan, 64, of Milton, died October 15 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
Born in Boston, he lived in Dorchester before moving to Milton 26 years ago.
Mr. Ryan was a graduate of Northeastern University. He was a captain in the Army Signals Corp during the Vietnam War. He was a past member of McKeon Post 146 AMVETS.
He was a sales manager at Royal Label Company in Dorchester for 32 years.
Husband of the late Mary C. (Colbert) Ryan; he is survived by a son, Thomas M. Ryan of Dedham; a daughter Marybeth Straut of Milton; a brother, Edward J. Ryan of Connecticut; four grandchildren; and his friend, Sandra Larner of Quincy.
A funeral Mass was celebrated October 18 at Saint Agatha Church. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home.
