Robert H. Bailey
Veteran, Machinist
NEW SALEM - Robert H. Bailey, 73, of 531 Meeds Dr., Valley Center, Kansas, formerly of New Salem, died on Monday, July 7, 2003 at his home. He had a stroke two years ago and was trying to recover from a broken hip. He was born in Lynn on Aug. 15, 1929, and was the son of Leslie M. Bailey and Ruth (Galeucia) Bailey of New Salem.
He attended Athol schools and enlisted in the United States Army in October 1946. He served in the Quartermaster Corp in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was later employed by the J.F. McElwain Shoe company and then moved to North Adams to work at the Wall - Streeter Shoe Company.
Robert and his family moved to Kansas in 1973 where he learned to be a machinist. He retired in 1991.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved just walking country fields.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Marilyn (Hunter) Bailey; a son, Kenneth Bailey, of Wichita, KS; two daughters, Diane Dillinger of Falcon, CO and Donna Richardson of Abilene, KS; five granddaughters and one grandson.
He was predeceased by a sister, Arline Gleason. He is survived by three brothers and two sisters, Leslie M. Bailey of Athol, Kenneth Bailey of Somersworth, NH, George Bailey of Ludlow, Caroline Hardy of Bradenton, FL, Mary Jane Leighton of Pittsburgh, PA and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are pending.

Roger J. Chouinard
Veteran, UMass Retiree
NEW SALEM - Roger J. Chouinard, 79, formerly of Elm Street, North New Salem, died Monday, July 7, 2003 in Mercy Hospital, Springfield.
Born in Moretown, VT, on Jan. 21, 1924, a son of Ernest and Diana (Masse) Chouinard, he was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre.
He lived in New Salem 40 years where he had moved from Springfield. For the past two years he resided at the East Village Place of East Longmeadow.
He worked at the University of Gardner and Star Lodge of Masons in Athol. He attended Worcester Boys Trade School and took courses at the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School.
Interested in community affairs, Mr. Jarvenpaa regularly attended town meetings. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and an enthusiast of cars and trucks. Mr. Jarvenpaa also built his own home in South Royalston.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Sanni K. (Salminen) Jarvenpaa; a daughter, Mailis K. Ahoranta, and two sons, Wayne I. Jarvenpaa and Ivar E. Jarvenpaa, all of South Royalston, three grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Olavi Jarvenpaa, Waino Jarvenpaa and Eino Jarvenpaa, as well as a sister, Bertha Dahlquist, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10 in the Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner. The Rev. Virginia Asel will officiate.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held in the funeral home from 10 - 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Kathryn Brunelle
PETERSHAM - Kathryn Brunelle, 75, of 53 East St., died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in the Quabbin Valley healthcare.

Ruth E. Powers
50 - Year Member
ORANGE - Ruth E. (Shaw) Powers, 89, of 16 Carpenter St., died Thursday, July 3, 2003 at home, surrounded by her family, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Lowell, on May 13, 1914, she was a daughter of Stewart J. and Alice (Maxwell) Shaw. She lived in Orange most of her life, relocating here from Belmont in 1950. She was a 50 - year member of the First Universalist Church and served on several church committees over the years.
She worked at Slencil Company for many years, was Past Worthy Matron of Athena Chapter No. 25 Order of Eastern Star, a Past President of Damon Spooner Post Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary, a member of Marion E. Nason Unity Club, Orange Historical Society, Orange Senior Citizens and the local Singles Club.
The greatest joys of her life were her family, traveling, quilting, crewel embroidery, ceramics and other crafts. She loved to play cards with the seniors.
She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert A. Powers, a daughter, Roberta A. Cantrell, of Athol, her son, David S. Powers, of Columbus, GA., two brothers, Warren Shaw, who was killed in Normandy during World War II, and Norman W. Shaw of Kittery Point, Me. and a sister, Myrtle Shaw, who died of pneumonia as a child.
She leaves two daughters, Judith L. Wetherby of Columbus, GA, and Janet E. Holden of West Springfield; five grandchildren, Sheila L. Cullen of Portsmouth, NH., William R. Cantrell of Athol, Elizabeth G. Powers of Columbus, GA, Amanda M. Finch and Julie M. Holden both of West Springfield. Two great grandchildren, Sophia R. Cantrell and Avah E. Cantrell both of Athol; several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. in the First Universalist Church, 31 North Main St. The Rev. Ralph Clarke will officiate.
An internment service will follow in South Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers contributons are suggested to First Universalist Church, 31 North Main St., Orange, 01364 or Hospice of Western New England at Franklin Medical Center, 164 High St., Greenfield, 01301.
Witty's Funeral Home is directing the arrangements.

Otten services
ATHOL - Memorial services for Diana A. (Wilcox) Otten, 76, of 426 Wallingford Ave., were held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the Athol - Orange Baptist Church with Pastor Mark D. Bariloni, officiating. The pianist was Terry Parker. Remembrances were done by Rev. Kim Nelson, former pastor and Ray Carpenter, Mrs. Otten's fiancee. Special music was done by Beth and David Evans, Mrs. Otten's daughter and son - in - law.
Burial was in Highland cemetery followed by a reception in the church hall.
The Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home directed arrangements.
