A 23 - year - old Athol woman was found dead in her home Wednesday, an apparent suicide.
Athol Police Lt. Timothy Anderson said Sgt. Kent Hager and Officers Todd Neale and Jason Vaillancourt responded to a South Athol Road residence at 3:26 p.m. for a reported shooting.
Upon arrival the officers found Maise Patterson lying on the floor in an upstairs bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound. Andersdon said a .22 caliber rifle was found in the room. She was treated ast the scene by Athol Fire personnel and then transported by life flight helicopter to University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester where she was pronounced dead.
Anderson said the incident is under investigation.
Lillian B. Goodrum
ORANGE — Lillian B. (Leach) Goodrum 79, of Quabbin Valley Healthcare, formerly of Orange, died there Thursday, March 2, 2000.
Born in Ashland, N.H., March 11, 1920, a daughter of Edward A. and Sadie M. (Demeritt) Leach, she grew up in Lyman, Maine and lived in the Biddeford area for many years.
After moving to Orange from Goodwins Mills, Maine in 1959, she worked at the B & S Manufacturing Co. for 15 years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and camping.
Her husband, William Goodrum, died in 1971 and a son, Fred Woods, died in 1999. She leaves a son, Rodney Goodrum of Orange; a daughter, Linda Whaley of Orange; a brother, Edward Leach of Lyman, Me.; a sister, Beatrice Rowell of Lyman, Me.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great - grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m. in the Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St, Biddeford, Me.
Burial will follow in Goodwins Mills Cemetery, Lyman, Me.
There will be a calling hour from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral chapel.

A funeral Mass for Alberta V. (Guy) Dubrule, 89, of 242 Petersham Rd., was held Thursday, March 2, 2000 in Our Lady Immaculate Church. The Rev. Stephen D. Johnson, pastor, was the celebrant of the Mass. The organist was Janet Paoletti, and the cantor was Mary Ehnstrom.
Burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Bearers were Brian Dubrule, David Dubrule, Bruce Dubrule Jr., Scott Dubrule, Clarence Blanchard and Peter Lanteigne.
The J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

No. ORANGE — Richard T. Thorp, 57, of 65 Athol Rd., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Athol Memorial Hospital, after being stricken ill earlier at his home.
He leaves his wife of 21 years, Paula (Wark) Thorp.
He was born in Athol, Dec. 2, 1942, the son of William and Mary (Aubrey) Thorp, and had lived in the Athol - Orange area all of his life.
He graduated from the Worcester Boys Trade High School in 1960. He was an engineer for the L.S. Starrett Co. in Athol where he had worked for the past 38 years.
He was a member of the Carbs Hot Rod Club in Athol, the Tully City Council Club, and the Orange Fire Department - Tully District. He was a car enthusiast most of his life and was currently restoring a 1934 Ford.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Jennifer Gabrenas and Jill Muzzy, both of Athol; his mother, Mary (Aubrey) Thorp of Athol; a brother, William Thorp of Athol; a sister, Patricia Hatzis of Huntington Beach, Calf.; four grandchildren, Sarah and Zachary Gabrenas and Dylan and Caitlin Muzzy, all of Athol.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m., in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, Metcalf Chapel, Athol Road, Warwick, with pastor Dan Dibble officiating.
Burial will be in Warwick Center Cemetery in the spring.
There are no calling hours.

Evelyn M. (Boreman) Bedard, 90, of 10 Congress St., Greenfield, formerly of Athol, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Franklin Medical Center, in Greenfield.
She was born Oct. 5, 1909, in Roxbury, the daughter of Thomas F. and Mary E. (Hosking) Boreman. She came to Athol from Spencer in 1929 to 1950, then moving to Chicago, Ill., for two years, St. Louis, Mo., for 10 years, in 1962 to Willimantic, Conn., returning to Athol in 1970 and since September of 1999 had resided in Greenfield.
Her first husband, Stuart Robbins, died in 1961; her second husband, Clinton Ware, died in 1976; and her third husband, Joseph Bedard, died in 1990.
She graduated from David Prouty High School, in Spencer, in 1927. She worked at the May Department Store in St. Louis, and for the Texaco Oil Co. in Willimantic.
She attended Athol Congregational Church for many years, was a member of the women's fellowship, active in church fairs knitting many baby sweaters and mitten sets. She was also a member of the Athol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, knitting sweaters for hospital fairs, and knitting mittens and hats for the Christmas mitten tree.
She was a former member of the Petersham Country Club, a former member of the Athol Senior Citizens Club, an was an avid sports fan following the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals.
She leaves a son, Barry W. Robbins of Bangkok, Thailand; two step - sons, John Ware of Northfield, and Robert Ware of California; three step - daughters, Betty Gibson of Northfield, Andrea Renaud of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lianne Bedard of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two nieces, Mary Rose of San Diego, Calf., and Louise Mitchell of Ft. Lauderdale. She also leaves several other step - grandchildren, cousins and other nephews and nieces.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m., in the Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vance E. Frank of Orange officiating.
Private burial will be in Old Cemetery, Spencer, at a later date.

Alberta V. (Guy) Dubrule, 89, of 242 Petersham Rd., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, following an illness. Her husband, Alexander Dubrule, died in 1969.
She leaves five sons, Robert Dubrule, Eugene Dubrule, James Dubrule and Bruce Dubrule, all of Athol, and Richard Dubrule of Leominster; nine grandchildren and many great - grandchildren and great - great - grandchildren.
She was born in Lebanon, N.H., on April 24, 1910, daughter of James and Vienie (Keniston) Guy, and had lived in Phillipston and Orange before coming to Athol in 1956. She attended schools in Lebanon.
She had worked at Simplex Time Recorder in Gardner for 12 years, retiring in 1982. Previously, she was employed by the L.S. Starrett Company and the former J. F. MacElwain Shoe Company. She was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church. She enjoyed camping, bingo, card playing and gardening. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling.
The funeral will be held Thursday, March 2, from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Calling hours in the funeral home are 7 to 9 tonight and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity related to helping the mentally retarded, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Memorial services for David G. Engel, 81, of 739 Daniel Shays Hwy., were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vance E. Frank officiating.
Representing the Edward H. Phillips, American Legion Post 102 were: Lee Plumber, junior vice commander of Worcester County; Robert Carey, past commander; Victor Litchfield, past finance officer; Donald Walker, sergeant at arms; Peter Krustapentus, past commander; Mitch Kenneway, Gordon Briggs, and Reggie Boutot. The American flag was presented to Mrs. Engel by Carey.
Mr. Engel's father, George G. Engel, founded the Engel plumbing business in 1915, which he operated for many years until the 1940's, at which time David and his brother, Donald, went into partnership operating the business until David retired in December of 1979 and Donald in December of 1989.

ORANGE — Funeral services for Clinton J. Dresser Sr., 90, of 383 East River St., were held Monday, Feb. 28, 2000 in Witty's Funeral Home. The Rev. Delmar Anderson of the Mission Convenant Church officiated.
Burial was in West Orange Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clinton "Jimmy" Dresser Jr., John Dresser, Richard Dresser, Michael Dresser, Richard Temple, and Robert Smith.
David G. Engel
Plumbing Business Founder Dies
David G. Engel, 81, of 739 Daniel Shays Hwy., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
He leaves his wife of 51 years Jean W. (Wood) Engel.
He was born April 1, 1918, in Athol, the son of George G. and Gladys (Gorton) Engel and has lived here most of his life. Since 1980 he has spent winters in Florida.
He graduated from Athol High School in 1935, and attended Worcester Trade School where he studied plumbing and heating. After completing school he went to work for his father.
He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 as a flying cadet and received his pilot's wings and Second Lieutenant commission in Oct. 1941. During World War II he served with the air transport command as a ferry pilot delivering new combat planes and then as a transport pilot flying four engine transports worldwide. He left active duty in March of 1946 and retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1966 as Lieutenant Colonel.
He returned to Athol in 1946 and opened the Engel Heating and Plumbing business in partnership with his brother, Donald, until his retirement in December 1979.
He was a member of Star - Athol Lodge of Masons for over 50 years, a life member of the Edward H. Phillips American Legion Post 102, Athol Historical Society, A.A.R.P. national and local chapters, and the Athol Sportsman's Club for many years.
He was a member of the Athol Congregational Church and had served as chairman of the board of trustees during the planning of the new parsonage. He was also chairman of the first school building committee for the Town of Athol investigating the repairs and renovations of the Lake Park, Highland and Main Street Schools.
He enjoyed traveling, reading, listening to classical music, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed his winters in Florida where he liked to golf and sail his remote controlled sailboat that he built.
Besides his wife he leaves three daughters, Suzanne J. Baron of Middletown, Del., Deborah L. Carter of Framingham, Rebecca L. Brutto of Worcester; seven grandchildren, Kerrie Lynn Carter and Brendan Carter both of Framingham, Billy Baron, Jay Baron and Nancy Baron all of Middletown, David Brutto and Timothy Brutto both of Worcester; two brothers, Donald G. Engel of Athol, and George G. Engel of Winter Park, Colo., two sisters, Constance Pedersen of Springfield, Doris Cline of Las Vegas, Nev.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol, with the Rev. Mary E. Giles, interim pastor of Athol Congregational Church officiating. There will be a call hour from 10 to 11 a.m. Private burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery at a later date.
