Joan F. Bailey Lioness Club Founder
PALM COAST, Fla. - Joan Frances (Maher) Bailey, 64, a retired eduactor, passed away suddenly Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital - Flagler, Bunnell.
Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of Henry and the late Catherine (Ennis) Maher of Athol, and a graduate of the Maria Assumpta Academy in Petersham.
She moved to Palm Coast in 1992 with her husband Edward, from Rockville, Md., where she founded, and was the first president of, the Lioness Club.
She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, the Palm Coast Irish Club, the Flagler Beach Woman's Club and the Palm Coast Elks Auxiliary. She had also been national president of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering Auxiliary. She enjoyed scrapbooking and sewing.
She is survived by her husband Edward; two sons, James of Chicopee, and Christopher of Silver Springs, Md., a daughter, Eileen Shlosser, of Springfield; her father, Henry Maher of Palm Coast; four brothers, Henry P. Maher of Mesa, Ariz., Francis X. Maher of Stowe, Vt., Michael J. Maher of Athol, and Alfred J. Maher; a sister, Kathleen Kachinsky of Henderson, Nev.; six grandchildren, and a great - grandchild.
Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1417 N. Semoran Blvd., Suite 205, Orlando, Fla. 32807.
Volusia Memorial, Ormand Beach, is in charge.

William L.D. Cook Farmer, Minister
GARDNER - William L.D. Cook, 89, of 827 Green St., died on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at the Heywood Hospital.
Born in Chesterfield, N.H., he was the son of Levi S. and Emily (Nichols) Cook. He was a farmer at the Maple Valley Farm, West Royalston, and then a factory worker for the Harrington Richardson Company. He was also an active member and minister at the Salvation Army, Worcester.
He leaves a son, Wayne Corette of Oxford; a daughter, Betsy Ann Sturtevant of Willington, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Crumb of Orange and Alice M. Sheldon of Wheelwright; 10 grandchildren, 18 great - grandchildren; six great - great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Francis Corette, died in 1953 in the Korean Conflict; and a sister, Margaret Potter, also predeceased him.
There will be no callling hours.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 96 South Barre Rd., Barre.

Everett B. Gardner Chemist, Rotarian
Everett B. Gardner, 93, of the Baldwinville Nursing Home, 51 Hospital Rd., Baldwinville, formerly of Athol, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the nursing home.
He was born in Springfield on Oct. 11, 1907, the son of Charles and Edna B. (Solomon) Gardner. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1926, and had lived in Springfield, Monson, and Wakefield, moving to Athol in 1952.
He worked as a chemist, operating the Athol Lacquer Company on Lumber Street in Athol for more than 20 years. He had previously worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company in Springfield for many years.
He had been a member of Athol Congregational Church for many years, sang in the church choir and served as church treasurer for many years. He was a former member of the Athol - Orange Rotary Club for more than 30 years, and served on the town of Athol building committee during the construction of the Pleasant Street School. His wife of many years, Ella May (North) Gardner, died in 1983.
He leaves three sons, Roger W. Gardner of Athol, Everett C. Gardner of St. Cloud, Fla., Richard H. Gardner of Orange; a brother, Ralph Gardner of Hadley; two sisters, Pearl McCurry and Grace Meehan both of East Longmeadow; nine grandchildren and several great - grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Gardner and Bertrum Gardner.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home in Athol with the Rev. Harold V. Lloyd Jr., pastor of the Athol Congregational Church, officiating.
Burial will follow at South Cemetery in Orange and there will be a calling hour from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross, Disaster Relief Fund, 114 Merriam Ave., Leominster, Mass. 01453.

Maillet Services
A funeral Mass for Carlton J. Maillet, 50, formerly of Athol, was held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 in the Our Lady Immaculate Church. The Rev. Stephen D. Johnson, pastor, was the celebrant of the Mass. The organist was Theresa Gabis.
Burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery. Bearers were Rene Maillet, Ronald Dupuis, Ryan Maillet and Jeremy Duhaime.
Officers and members of the Edward H. Phillips Post 102, American Legion provided military honors. They included Glenn Frenette, commander; Robert Carey, senior vice commander; Victor Litchfield, assistant finance officer; Peter Krustapentus, adjutant; Alfred Souza, chaplain; and Donald Walker, sergeant at arms. The United States flag was folded by Peter Krustapentus and Alfred Souza and was presented to Gerard Maillet. Taps was played by William Kessler.
The J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mealand Services
A memorial service for Laura H. (Haskins) Mealand, 83, of 30 Petersham Rd., who died on Sept. 23, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27 at the South Athol United Methodist Church.

Carlton J. Maillet Decorated Veteran
Carlton J. Maillet, 50, formerly of Athol, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 in the Northampton VA Medical Center, Northampton. He leaves his father, Gerard Maillet of Baldwinville; two brothers, Rene J. Maillet of Fitchburg and Kevin Maillet of Arizona; two sisters, Cheryl M. Moriarty and her husband Edward of California and Lisa Marie Dupuis and her husband Ronald of Athol; two nephews, Ryan P. Maillet and Jeremy J. Duhaime; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was born in Gardner on Oct. 13, 1950, a son of Gerard and Teresa M. (Dugan) Maillet, and lived in Athol for several years before moving to Northampton 20 years ago. He graduated from Athol High School.
A member of Boy Scout Troop 18, he earned his Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam war, he served from Dec. 29, 1967 until Nov. 14, 1969. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class.
He worked as a part - time roofer and carpenter with his father.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church.
Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the World Trade Center Relief Fund, c/o the American Red Cross, 114 Merriam Ave., Leominster, MA 01453.

Erna E. Heinold
BOLTON - Erna E. (Fateiger) Heinold, 73, of 9 Sargent Rd., a retired secretary, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.
Among her survivors she leaves a sister, Betty Andrews, of Athol.

Sibley Services
ORANGE - Funeral services for Norma G. (Healy) Sibley, 78, of 519 East River St., were held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 in the Fiske Funeral Home, Athol, with the Rev. Mark Bariloni, pastor of the Athol - Orange Baptist Church officiating, and Rev. Ralph Brown, associate pastor, co - officiating. The organist was Stephanie Parker.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery Athol. Bearers were Nathan Euvrard, Francis Charest III, Richard Ramsay, Christopher Ramsay, Amanda Haeg and Steven Madierous.

Mrs. Mealand, 'The Mitten Lady,' Dies
NEW SALEM - Laura H. (Haskins) Mealand, 83, of 30 Petersham Rd., died Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Born on Oct. 3, 1917 in Minnesota, she was a daughter of Albert M. and Maude H. (Swetland) Haskins and moved to South Athol at age five and lived most of her life here and in New Salem.
She attended Athol schools via horse and buggy, walking, the "Rabbit Railroad," automobile and school bus.
She was a clerk at the former Levinson Packing Company in Orange and retired in 1982.
Her former husband, Fred Mealand, died in 1985.
A hard working, self - sufficient lady who enjoyed her family and helping others, she was very dedicated to serving the South Athol United Methodist Church and had served on nearly all the committees of the church.
A skilled knitter, she knit hundreds of mittens for the South Athol United Methodist Church mitten tree, and was known as the "Mitten Lady."
She enjoyed cooking, and was co - chairman of the South Athol suppers for many years along with making countless pies for the suppers. She was very well known for her homemade doughnuts, too.
For 11 years she cooked the meals for students in the former New Salem Center School and New Salem Academy and is well remembered by those students. She was also a 50 - year member of the Order of Eastern Star - Athena Chapter.
She was honored by her fellow church members with the presentation of the "Love Award" given to her for her many acts of kindness to others. She also received the Richard B. Ellis Award for her service to humanity at the Athol Human Resource Center where she had volunteered for five years.
Besides being very active in the South Athol United Methodist Church, she enjoyed being with her family, wallpapering, painting and housekeeping.
Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor M. McGinnis and her husband Paul, of New Salem; a son, Richard A. Mealand and his wife Frenchie, of New Salem; grandsons, Michael and Thomas Mealand of New Mexico; granddaughters, Barbara Sawyer of Orange, Lisa Wypych of New Salem, Melissa Mallett of Orange, Jenne McGinnis of Petersham, Andrea Muller of Jefferson, N.H., Claire McGinnis of New Salem and Marjorie McGinnis of New Salem; 16 great - grandchildren; many nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Elmer and Charles Haskins, both of whom died in 1996.
A memorial service will be held in the South Athol United Methodist Church at a later date to be announced. Pastor Nancy Collins will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the South Athol United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, in care of Zane Dubour, 3800 South Athol Rd., Athol, MA 01331.
