BERNICE E. GAITHER
Bernice E. Gaither, 102, Bayard, W.Va., died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born on March 29, 1902, in Bayard, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Sypolt) Funk. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Gaither, in 1952.
She was a member of the Bayard United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gaither is survived by two daughters, Elsie M. Meredith, Bayard, and Velma M. Halterman, Huchuca City, Ariz; five grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, with Rev. William McCallister officiating. Interment was in the Bayard Cemetery.

MARY J. MILLER
Mary J. Miller, 81, Springs, Pa., died Monday, August 2, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Meyersdale, Pa.
Born August 18, 1922, in Thomas, Oklahoma, she was a daughter of the late Solomon and Anna (Troyer) Yoder. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel J. Miller; one son, Harvey Miller; and one daughter, Anna Orendorf.
Mrs. Miller was a retired cook at the Casselman Restaurant, Grantsville, and a member of Bittinger Mennonite Church.
She is survived by one son, Joseph Miller, Accident; four daughters, Edith Yoder, Grantsville, Mabel Pugh, Mansfield, Ohio, Katie Beitzel, Accident, and Maryetta Kauffman, New Holland, Pa.; three brothers, Fred Yoder, Chesapeake, Va., Joe Yoder, Harrisonburg, Va., and Jerry Yoder, Dublin, Ga.; three sisters, Gertrude Yoder, Warren, Ohio; Grace Resh, Grantsville, and Mabel Beiler, Salisbury, Pa.; 22 grandchildren, two step-grandsons; 34 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Homes, Grantsville, and a service was conducted this morning, Aug. 5, at the Bittinger Mennonite Church with the Rev. Leonard Orendorf and the Rev. Keith Yoder officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

RICHARD J. LOWMAN
Richard Joseph Lowman, 76, Cumberland, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at his home.
Born June 17, 1928, in Cumberland, and reared in Swanton, he was the son of the late Howard Perry Lowman and Sadie Olive (Friend) Lowman. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He graduated from Oakland High School in 1946. After graduation, he served with the United States Army in Occupied Japan and was discharged on Dec. 4, 1947.
Mr. Lowman was a 37-year employee of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Cumberland, having retired in March 1985. He was a life-member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Colleen (Cannon) Lowman; one son, Richard H. Lowman, Burlington, W.Va.; three daughters, Maureen Burkey, Brentwood, Tenn., Caroline Ratchford, Towson, and Christine Raines-Carder, Cumberland; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, Cumberland, and a a Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of St. Patrick on Wednesday, Aug. 4, with Msgr. Thomas Bevan as celebrant.
Interment was at the Garrett County Memorial Gardens in Oakland.
The family requests that memorials be made in his name to the WMHS Hospice Care Unit, c/o Linda Valentine, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502, for nursing education.

DAVID C. STOCKETT
David C. Stockett, 52, McHenry, died Monday, Aug. 2, at his home.
Born on Jan. 29, 1952, in Annapolis, he was a son of Edith (Carrick) Stockett, Davidsonville, and the late Calvin Stockett.
He was the owner of Stockett Excavating and Hauling, McHenry, and was a member of Oakland Lodge #2481, BPO Elks, and the Sons of the American Legion, Oakland.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kathy Jo (Taylor) Stockett; three daughters, Ginger Sutphin, Davidsonville, and Laura Wooster and Sabrina Reed; two stepsons, Tommy Thorne, Masontown, W.Va., and Travis Stalnaker, Beckley, W.Va.; one sister, Anita Parker, Davidsonville; one brother, Calvin Stockett, Annapolis; and three grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service of remembrance was held on Wednesday, Aug. 4, with Rev. Joe Spiker officiating.
Friends will be received at the Kalas Funeral Home in Annapolis today, Aug. 5, from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m.
A service will be held at the Kalas Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Lakemont Cemetery, Davidsonville.

ROBERT J. MAXEY
Robert Jackson Maxey, 64, Clinton, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at his home.
Born on January 5, 1940, in Cumberland, he was the son of Theta (Maxey) Shaffer, Oakland, and the late Samuel D. Maxey Jr. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Samuel D. Maxey III.
He graduated from Southern High School in 1958 and worked for the Maryland Dept. of Transportation for 30 years, retiring in 1989. He also owned his own business, Maxey's Performance Products.
He drag-raced for 30 years, building and driving his own cars. Articles about him and his cars have appeared in many racing publications, and he won awards during his racing career.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth Ann (Teets) Maxey; two daughters, Karen Thatcher and husband Joseph, Prince Frederick, and Paula Kowalczyk and husband Joseph, Brandywine; and one grandson, Daniel Kowalczyk.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Janice Leith officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Spring Cemetery, Eglon, W.Va.

JOHN A. SHARPS
John A. Sharps Sr., 83, Oakland, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at his home.
Born on January 22, 1921, in Grafton, W.Va., he was a son of the late Clarence E. and Gertrude L. (Shafferman) Sharps. He was also preceded in death by one son, Donald W. Sharps, one granddaughter, Michelle Rene Rowlands, and two brothers, William E. Sharps and Fred L. Sharps.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Oakland, for 70 years, and was a past president of the church council. For over 50 years, he was a partner in Sharps Chevrolet, Oakland. He was a former member and past president of the Oakland Rotary Club and served 42 years with the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, retiring as assistant chief. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was a member of Proctor Kildow Post #71, American Legion, Oakland.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Crosby) Sharps; one daughter, Sue S. Rickert, Cambridge; one son, John A. Sharps Jr., Prosper, Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, today (Aug. 5) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Friday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Richard Seaks and Pastor Randy Nairn officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
Members of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Dept. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home this evening at 7 p.m.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans' organizations in southern Garrett County.

AMOGENE METHENY
Amogene "Jean" Metheny, 71, Ravenna, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Akron (Ohio) City Hospital.
Born on March 1, 1933, in Mt. Storm, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Arnold and Ollie (Berg) Rohrbaugh. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence K. Metheny, in June 2004, and by one son, Steven K. Metheny.
She was a former dietician for the Longmeadows Nursing Home, Ravenna, and was a volunteer for the March of Dimes.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie J. Szpak, Ravenna, and Rita F. DeLuke, Kent, Ohio; one son, Clyde Metheny, Millersburg; one sister, Maxine Gank, Oakland; one brother, Forrest Rohrbaugh, Oakland; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, today, Aug. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Terra Alta, W.Va.

ALLEN C. EDGAR
Allen Clark Edgar, 66, Grantsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at his home after battling cancer.
Born Dec. 28, 1937, in Grantsville, he was a son of the late William Donald and Dora Elizabeth (Kahl) Edgar. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iretha Brenneman and Margaret Yoder; and three brothers, Elwood, Stanley, and Olen Edgar.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He worked in the maintenance department at Sheetz, Meyersdale, Pa., and was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Grantsville.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Mary A. (Garlitz) Edgar; two daughters, Berenice M. Shaffer, Finzel, and Laura A. Nicol, Grantsville; three brothers, George Edgar, Salisbury, Otis Edgar, Baltimore, and Dennis Edgar, Elizabethtown, Ky.; two sisters, Edith Yoder and Dorothy Lowery, both of Meyersdale; and two granddaughters.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, on Saturday, Aug. 28, with the Rev. Doug Kenney officiating.
Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery. Military rites were accorded.

MARGARET A. BAER
Margaret Angela Baer, 90, Salisbury, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home, Frostburg.
Born Sept. 28, 1913, in Avilton, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah (McKenzie) Orner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Baer Sr., June 3, 1975; one daughter, Carol McKenzie, one sister, Nellie Harding; and one brother, George Orner.
She was a member of Greenville Lutheran Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three sons, Ralph Baer Jr. and Carl Baer, both of Frostburg, and Robert Baer, Elkins, W.Va.; two daughters, Anna Hochard, Northport, Ala., and Linda Arnold, Salisbury; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury.
A service was conducted on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Greenville Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating.
Interment was in Greenville Cemetery.

ELMER L. HUTZEL
Elmer L. Hutzel, 90, Salisbury, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at his home.
Born July 17, 1914, in Jennings, he was a son of the late Frank and Ida (Durst) Hutzel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doretha A. (Shunk) Hutzel, Dec. 19, 1991; one sister, Freda Lindeman; and two brothers, Thomas and Clark Hutzel.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He was a retired cement finisher and was a member of Cement Mason's Local 526, Salisbury Cemetery Committee, and Casselman Valley Sportsmen's Club.
Surviving are one son, Blayne Hutzel, Silver Spring; two daughters, Grace Ravenscroft, Reisterstown, and Nancy Deal, Salisbury; three brothers, Mahlon, Havard, and Frank Hutzel, all of Grantsville; two sisters, Carrie Durst, Grantsville, and Verna Hutzel, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, where a service was held on Sunday, Aug. 29, with the Rev. Dr., Philip Sorensen and the Rev. Albert Valentine officiating.
Interment was in Salisbury Cemetery.

DARRIN J. FRITZ SR.
Darrin J. Fritz Sr., 38, Oakland, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at his home.
Born Nov. 25, 1965, in Baltimore, he was a son of Melvin J. Fritz, Choptank, and Pauline M. (Bulawa) Fritz, Mtn. Lake Park.
He was a former heavy equipment operator for the Davis Construction Co. and Encore Plumbing, both of Anne Arundel County.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Darrin J. Fritz Jr. and Michael J. Fritz, both of Strasburg, Va.; one brother, Quinn D. Fritz, Glen Burnie; and special friend, Tammie L. Joseph, Mtn. Lake Park.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Sunday, Aug. 29. Following the service, his body was cremated.

JULIA I. COLEMAN
Julia Irene Coleman, 63, Kitzmiller, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born March 15, 1941, in Blaine, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Mabel (Paugh) Greaser. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Coleman; and one son, Ronald W. Coleman.
She was retired from the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, where she worked as a medical secretary. She was also employed as clerk/treasurer for the town of Loch Lynn, and was an Avon representative. She was a member of the Kitzmiller Fire Department, E.M.S., and a member of the Keyser Moose.
Surviving are three sisters, Shirley Coleman, Millie Lucas, both of Kitzmiller, and Vickie Paugh, Stuarts Draft, Va.; one brother, Tom Greaser, Elk Garden, W.Va.; and one grandson.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, where a service was held Tuesday, Aug. 31, with the Rev. George Tichinel officiating.
Interment was in the Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the church of one's choice.

HAZEL V. MOORE
Hazel V. Moore, 97, Frostburg, formerly of Baltimore, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born June 1, 1907, in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late George and Lula (Fauzey) Durst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Moore; and one brother, Howard Durst.
She was a former employee of the Sunshine Bakery in Baltimore.
Surviving are two sisters, Virlen Stevens, Frostburg, and Rosella Tomlinson, Short Gap, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.
Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park, Baltimore.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
