ROSANN P. LANGHANS
FROSTBURG - Rosann Phipps Langhans, 93, formerly of 201 E. Main St., died Sunday June 8, 2003, at the St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 27, 1909, in Little Valley, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Ruby (Adele) Langhans. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Kump.
Ms. Langhans was a retired professor from Frostburg State College. She was Baptist in faith and was a member of the Frostburg Soroptomist, Mountain Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star and the American Association of University Women.
She was the last serving member of her immediate family. Surviving are several cousins and close friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Penick officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church, 101 Bowery St., Frostburg, Md., 21532.

ROBERT L. POPP
CUMBERLAND - On Saturday, June 7, 2003, Robert L. Popp, 74, went home to be with the Lord.
Born Aug.12, 1928, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William McKinley and Violet (Duckworth) Popp. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William McKinley Popp Jr. and Joseph Glenn Popp; and two sisters, Violet Elizabeth Popp and Carol Ann Popp.
Mr. Popp was retired from the State Highway Administration and a 1946 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was a staff sergeant, 115th Infantry, Company C, National Guard, and past president of the Maryland Classified Employees Association.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Esther (Kemp) Popp; three daughters, Esther Often and husband Rick, Ridgeley; Barbara Miller and husband Larry Dean, Cumberland; and Patricia Early, Pensacola, Fla.; one son, Robert Popp Jr. and friend Richard Baer, Cumberland; three sisters, Marlene Popp, Cumberland; Emily Ulmer and husband Elwood, Baltimore; and Judy Vassar and husband Tom, Fredricksburg; six grandchildren, Tina Wilt, Crystal Perdew, Rick Swanger Jr., Dean Miller Jr., Zachary Miller and Shane Early, and five great-grandchildren, Autumn, Emily, Ali, Kailey and Hunter.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, PA, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Elwood Ulmer and the Rev. Sherrill Dillon officiating.
Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Wilt, Rick Swanger Jr., Dean Miller Jr., Bill Perdew, Dean Miller and Rick Often.
Honorary pallbearers will be Shane Early, Zach Miller and Richard Baer.
The world has been blessed with his presence for 74 years. He gave of himself and asked for nothing in return. He will live with us forever.

CLEO A. MILLER
HYNDMAN, Pa. - Cleo A. (Boyer) Miller, 57, of Hyndman Road, Hyndman, formerly of Buffalo Mills, went to be with the lord, Sunday June 8, 2003, at her resdence.
Born March 18, 1946 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Leo Keel and Patricia A. (Boyer) Bittner. She was preceded in death by a son, Cliff Shaffer; two sisters, Esther K. Deneen and Linda Sue Crosby.
Mrs. Miller was a former emloyee of the S. Schwab Company as a seamstress. She attended the Calvary Bible Church, Ellerslie and the Bible Gospel Church, Hyndman. She was a former member of the Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary and Kennells Mill Sportsman Club’s Ladies Auxzilary.
She is survived by her mother, Patricia A. (Boyer) Bittner, Hyndman; husband Irvin T. “Ted” Miller, whom she married June 12, 1970, in Ellerslie. She is survived by one son, L. Dean Miller and wife Barb, Cumberland; two daughters, Tina L. Miller and boyfriend Bobby Cook and Rebecca S. “Becky” Miller and boyfriend David Dietz, both of Hyndman; and three grandchildren, L. Dean Miller Jr., Zachary Miller and Michaela Dietz. She is also survived by four sisters, Mary A., wife of Ken Printy of Ellerslie; Diane L. Dunmeyer, Hyndman; Donna J., wife of Gary Lee, Hyndman; and Betty J., wife of Tom McKenzie, Mount Savage and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends wil be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman Pa., Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Klink, the Rev. Faye Leydig and the Rev. Ken Korns officiating.
Interment will be at the Palo Alto Hilltop Cemetery, Hyndman.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Dunmeyer, Tim Kenell, Brian Murray, Eric Bittner, Jason Lee and Jamie McKenzie.

EARL F. DICK
FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Earl F. Dick, 79, of Fairmont, formerly of Cresaptown, Md., died on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
He was born in Westernport, on June 13, 1924, a son of the late Elmer F. and Virginia Romer Dick.
He was retired from Allegany Ballistics Lab in Cumberland, Md., where he worked as a machinist. He was Roman Catholic by faith. He enjoyed woodworking and home workshop activities.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 58 years, Geraldine M. Ware Dick of Fairmont. The couple married Dec. 29, 1944.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Chris L. and Gloria Dick of Fairmont; one brother, Richard David Dick of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Alma June Hinkle of Tyler, Texas; two grandsons and their wives, Tyler L. and Pamela Dick of Fairmont, and Cole W. and Cindy Dick of Fairmont; four great-grandchildren, Tyson Dick, Tiarra Dick, Taron Dick, and Colbi Dick, all of Fairmont; two nieces, Cindy and Kim; five step grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Timothy Morgan Dick.
Mr. Dick’s body will be cremated.
Interment will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Cumberland, at a later date.
There will be a private family memorial service also at a later date.

HUGH A. FRIEND
SWANTON - Hugh Andrew Friend, 75, of Swanton, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Swanton, son of the late Andrew Grant Friend and Doris (Bray) Friend. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Amy Wilson.
He was a Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Fitzwater) Friend; two sons, Gary R. Friend and his wife Sally, Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Terry L. Friend and his wife Sandie, Evanston, Wyo.; one daughter, Judy L. Moore and her husband Daniel, Comox, British Columbia; and five grandchildren, Shannon and Keltie Moore, Lindsay, Amy, and Tony Friend.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, on Friday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Vickie Minnich officiating.
Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Swanton.
Memorials should be directed to the family or the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.

ELWOOD D. BROWN
SWANTON - Sergeant First Class Elwood Dale Brown, 67, of Mount Zion Road, Swanton, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at his residence.
Born April 20, 1936, in Vindex, he was the son of the late Sincle and Esta (Sharpless) Brown.
SFC Brown retired from the U.S. Army after serving his country for 24 years. Elwood served three tours of duty in Vietnam where he was awarded many medals, commendations and citations. Some of his awards are Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with “V” device, and the Silver Star. SFC Brown was a member of the Deer Park V.F.W. and the 11th Calvary. He also retired from Bausch & Lomb.
Surviving are his wife, Marie (Tichinel) Brown; son, Joseph Brown; two daughters, Rhonda Kifer and Donna Cogley, all of Swanton. Also surviving are a brother, Irvin “Bill” Brown of Swanton; a sister, Mary Hartman of Fairmont, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Monday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Mount Zion Methodist Church, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Sam Calhoun officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery, where military graveside services will be held with the combined veterans organizations.

CORINNE W. GARTIN
MAYSVILLE, W.Va. - Corinne Wynell (Cosner) Gartin, 76, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Maysville, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at the home of her son, Delmas and Jennifer Gartin in Maysville.
Born Jan. 5, 1927, in Maysville, she was the daughter of the late Harry Cosner and Magdaline “Maggie” (Michael) Cosner.
Mrs. Gartin was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Gartin, June 30, 1996. Also preceded by an infant grandson, Jesse Michael Gartin; two brothers, Glen Cosner and William Michael; and one sister, Alta Cosner. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Gartin retired from Anchor Hocking Glass in Lancaster, Ohio, and was a member of the Shady Lane Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio, for 45 years.
Surviving are one son, Delmas R. Gartin and wife Jennifer of Maysville; one grandson, Joshua R. Gartin of Maysville; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Thompson of Columbus, Lula Ball of Columbus, and Ruby Cordle of Blaine, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Lynn Durbin officiating.
Interment will be in the Maysville Cemetery in Maysville.

C. DONALD FINZEL
SALISBURY, Pa. - Charles Donald Finzel, 74, of 107 Grant St., Salisbury, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital, Johnstown.
Born Jan. 18, 1929, in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late Howard William and Alberta Marie (Bolden) Finzel. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Bernard; and two sisters, Irene Baker and Pearl Eisler.
He is survived by three sons, James and Rodney Finzel, both of Salisbury, and Steven Finzel, Stephens City, Va.; his former wife, Gwen Winters, Eckhart, Md.; one brother, Stanley Finzel, Grantsville, Md.; four sisters, Dorothy Lotz, Rhoda Byrd and Leota “Bake” Christner, all of Frostburg, Md., and Patsy Mikesell, Derry; six grandchildren; and his dear friend, Ruth Stone, Salisbury.
Mr. Finzel retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years service as a chief petty officer. He was a member of the Salisbury V.F.W., Salisbury American Legion, Meyersdale Moose Lodge and the Policemen’s Association. He was of the Catholic faith.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Highway, Salisbury, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, West Salisbury, with the Rev. Albert Anselmi as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Finzel Cemetery, Finzel, Md. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. and American Legion.
A Christian Wake service will be held in the funeral home, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

MARY JANE COMPTON
CORRIGANVILLE - Mary Jane Compton, 84, of Corriganville, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at the Cumberland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Allegany County, she was the daughter of the late Bernard E. Martin and Julia Naomi (Lapp) Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bradford Compton and her sister, Amelia Ringler.
Mary Jane was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ, Corriganville. She was retired from Penn Mar Motors, worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Mary Jane also tended bar at the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving are her daughter, Janet (Compton) Waltman and her husband William A. Sr., Ellerslie; her sister, Opal Martin, Corriganville; two grandchildren, Christina (Waltman) Deter and husband Dave, Cumberland, and William Waltman Jr. and his wife Melissa, Hyndman, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Waltman, Hannah Waltman, William Waltman III, Bryce Deter, and Bryanne Deter; and her niece, Linda (Ringler) Gillinov and her husband Ron, Columbus, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., (formerly Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A.), 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, ( www.Adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Craft officiating.
Interment will be held at Greenmount Cemetery.

HARVEY P. WELLER
PAW PAW, W.Va. - Mr. Harvey P. Weller, 96, of Paw Paw, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
He was born Jan. 28, 1908, at Summit Mills, Pa., was the son of the late Charles Neil Weller and Barbara Ellen Opel Weller.
Mr. Weller moved to Paw Paw in 1929 and worked as an accountant for Consolidated Orchards for 50 years. He was a charter member of the Paw Paw Lions Club and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow, the Lions Club’s highest award. He was a member of the Paw Paw United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer. He was also the founder of the United Methodist Pittsburgh Foundation for the church. He was a Mutual of West Virginia Fire Insurance agent, a notary public and an income tax preparer. After retirement, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed growing roses.
On Jan. 28, 1931, he married Fern “Billie” Saville Weller, who preceded him in death on April 26, 2001.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hanlin of Paw Paw, and Donna Jean Robey of Martinsburg; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; four step great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harvey P. Weller Jr.; one brother; and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at the Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw, with the Rev. Herman Goede and the Rev. Marite Pelverts officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Hill Cemetery at Paw Paw.
Friends may call at the Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the Pittsburgh Foundation or the Paw Paw Lions Club.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw.

MELVIN E. FOLK SR.
FREDERICK - Melvin Elwood Folk Sr., 88, of Frederick, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital in the company of close family. He was the husband of the late Elvie Mane Bowman Folk, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1946, and was preceded in death by on March 30, 2003.
Born Feb. 8, 1915, in Mount Savage, he was the second of eight children born to Charles K. and Celia C. Rawlings Folk.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Folk worked as a civil servant at Fort Detrick. He graduated in 1947 from the Harmony School of Piano Tuning, Harrisburg, Pa., after which he began his career as an accomplished piano technician. He owned and operated a piano tuning business in Frederick from 1947 to 2003. He tuned all the pianos in the Frederick County school system. He tuned his last three pianos in October of 2003. He was an active member of the Marantha Church of God, Frederick.
He was the beloved father of Melvin E. Folk Jr. of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Lillie M. Folk Dove of Frederick. Other survivors are his daughter-in-law, Sara Bickley Folk, Lawrenceville, and his son-in-law, William L. Dove of Frederick; four grandchildren, Ryan A. Folk and wife Sara of Lawrenceville, Megan L. Dove of Frederick, Jesse M. Dove of Coral Gables, Fla., and Haylee D. Folk of Statesboro, Ga.; a sister, Alva Jean Sgaggero of Frostburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six siblings, William R. Folk, Cecil R. Folk, Harold L. Folk, Harleen V. Gomer, Dorothy M. Scell, and Lenora M. Phister.
Mr. Folk is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 Market St., Frederick, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, in the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Price, Marantha Church of God, officiating.
Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
Memorials may be made in Mr. Folk’s name to the Marantha Church of God, 123 Byle Drive, Frederick, MD 21702.

IRA M. STARK
LONACONING - Ira Monn Stark, 86, of 6247 Avilton-Lonaconing Road, Lonaconing, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at his home.
Born Dec. 28, 1917, at Avilton, he was the son of the late Orville G. and Mary (Warnick) Stark. Mr. Stark was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jennie (Durst) Stark, Jan. 29, 2004; one son, Robert M. Stark; one grandson, Ronnie Allen Stark; three brothers, Edgell Stark, Dallas Stark, William Stark; and two sisters, Helena Brenneman and Catherine Corbin.
Mr. Stark was a dairy farmer and a member of the Garrett County Farm Bureau. He was a graduate of Grantsville High School, a participant of the Civilian Conservation Corps and “On the Farm” Training Program and also a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Mr. Stark was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II on the USS Stevens in the Pacific Theatre. He was a lifetime member of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion and also V.F.W. Post 1141, Cumberland.
He is survived by one son, Ray E. Stark and wife Dottie, Greencastle, Pa.; one daughter, Jeanne S. Turner and husband Ron, Cumberland; three sisters, Evelyn Robeson, Avilton, Rotha Pelto, Vienna, Va., and Virginia Kamp, Cleveland, Ohio; five grandchildren, Douglas Turner and wife Cheri, Kelli Rayner and husband Mike, Carrie Wilhelm and husband Randy, Vicki Friend and husband John, and Jennifer Alexander and husband Matt; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel C. Agnew officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 16864 National Pike, Frostburg, MD 21532.
