Helen E. Springer
Former Dundalk homemaker Helen E. Springer died in her sleep July 12 [2003] at age 78.
The former Helen E. Morgan, who was born in Rochester, N.H., worked for Goetze's Meats many years ago.
A former longtime Baltimore Street resident, she and her husband, Carl T. Springer, lived in Rosedale until July 2002, when they moved to Cecil County with their son-in-law.
She had been a member of Women of the Moose.
Predeceased by daughter Sandra Lee Noulett and sister Harriet Larkin, Mrs. Springer is survived by son-in-law George C. Noullet, brother Joe T. Morgan of Dundalk and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband of almost 61 years, Carl T. Springer, died two days later on July 14.
Services were private.

Francis S. Wiessner
Francis S. Wiessner (nee Jachelski), 74, a Graceland Park resident for 44 years, died of cancer July 12 [2003] at Harbor Hospital.
Years ago, Mrs. Wiessner was on the sales staff of the Tweed Shop in Eastpoint and Baltimore and the Toe Shoe Store, also in Baltimore.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church for more than 30 years.
Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her family, shopping, cooking and watching British comedies on television.
She is survived by children Jackie Tharp, Joseph, Gordon and John Wiessner Jr., Terry LaMonte, Patricia Kratochvil and Frances Calcagno, brothers Raymond and Albert Jachelski, sister Marie Neubert and 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Wiessner, brothers Philip and Michael Jachelski and sisters Martha Smith and Helen Becker.
Monsignor Richard E. Parks conducted a Mass of Christian Burial on July 15 at Sacred Heart of Mary Church. Interment followed at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 43025, Baltimore, MD 21236-0025.

James M. Woody Sr.
North Point Village resident James Marion Woody Sr. died at home July 9 [2003] at age 78.
Born Dec. 3, 1924, in Alberne, Va., Mr. Woody, who left high school to join the U.S. Navy, served on a destroyer during World War II.
He married the former Mary Elizabeth Morris on Dec. 13, 1946. They lived in Edgemere for a time before moving to newly built North Point Village in 1955.
He worked as a shipbuilder for Owens Yacht Co. for 20 years, then worked another 20 years as a boilermaker for Bethlehem Steel, retiring in 1987.
Serving as deacon, deacon chairman and trustee at Edgemere Baptist Church, he helped build the parsonage there. He also was a member of the church's finance and pulpit search committees. He later joined Huntington Baptist Church in Baltimore and then Chestnut Baptist Church in Luther-ville.
He was an avid baseball fan and an exemplary storyteller. In their younger years, he and his wife enjoyed dancing.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by sons James M. Woody Jr. and Kenneth W. Woody, brother David Wood, sister Nelda Moyers and two grandchildren.
Services were held July 12 at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church in Lutherville. Interment followed at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

Roxie C. Chiveral
Graceland Park resident Roxie C. Chiveral, 57, died of cancer Aug. 16 [2003] at Franklin Square Hospital.
Born in Cortland, N.Y., the former Roxie Carpenter was raised in Dundalk and graduated from Dundalk High School in 1964. She worked at Western Electric Co. for five years after high school. More recently, she was a self-employed home health aide.
She had been a member of Graceland Park Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1974.
Her daughter said that although her mother was very ill, she always had a smile and never complained about her situation.
In addition to her husband, Warren Chiveral, with whom she celebrated 39 years of marriage July 16, she is survived by sons Mark and Terrence Chiv-eral, daughter Nicole Taylor, two granddaughters, brother Stephen Kreisher and stepfather George Kreisher. Her mother, Anna Kreisher, died July 16.
Services were held Aug. 20 at Connelly Funeral Home. Interment followed at Meadowridge Memorial Park.

George H. Eberling
George Henry Eberling, a Charlesmont resident since 1966, died Aug. 30 [2003] at Franklin Square Hospital. He was 83 and had earlier lived in Old Dundalk.
Mr. Eberling retired as a foreman in the mid-1980s after a 50-year career with Armco Steel.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and also served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
His memberships included the Boumi Temple, Patapsco Masonic Lodge 183, Dundalk American Legion Post 38 and Charles Evering VFW Post 6506.
Surviving are son James L. Eberling of Sparrows Point, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bernice M. (nee Sites), and a daughter, Susan Ruth Eberling.
The Rev. William Wallace of First Lutheran Church of Gray Manor conducted services Sept. 3 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment followed at Baltimore National Cemetery.

Ronald P. Myers
Longtime Dundalk resident Ronald Patrick Myers, 60, died after a brief illness Sept. 4 [2003] at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Mr. Myers, a 1961 graduate of Dundalk High School, joined the U.S. Navy after graduation. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from 1961 to 1965.
He retired in 1996 from the Bethlehem Steel shipyard.
An avid radio-controlled airplane enthusiast, he served for two years as vice president of the Sunday Flyers. He also enjoyed camping, boating and crabbing.
He is survived by son Troy Myers, daughters Annette Schlossnagle and Danielle Myers, sisters Billie Schlaile, Delores Longfellow and Eileen Myers, brothers Emil and Howard Myers, six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He also leaves behind loving companion Pat Myers.
Private services were held at Bradley-Ashton-Matthews Funeral Home.

Paulette Pope
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 18 [2003], for Broening Highway homemaker Paulette Pope (nee Freeman), 59, who died at home in her sleep Sept. 15. She had been ill for the past year.
The service begins 8:30 p.m. at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, 7922 Wise Ave. Friends may visit from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mrs. Pope, who grew up in Colgate, lived on Broening Highway for more than 11 years.
Watching television and playing family card games were some of her favorite pastimes. She cherished the time she spent with her two granddaughters.
She is survived by children Sherry Horsey, Catherine Pope, Paula Ellis and Bernard Pope, sister Theresa Holbrook, brothers Thomas Freeman and Jason Jones and two granddaughters.
Visitation at the funeral home also was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles J. Preston
Former Lynhurst Road resident Charles John Preston of Essex died of cancer Sept. 4 [2003] at home. He was 57 years old.
Mr. Preston worked as a tow truck driver for Fullerton Auto for the past 10 years.
He is survived by son Timothy Preston, sisters Helen VanBuskirk, Rhea Dixon, Mary Eifert and Deborah Falkenstein, brother William Preston and many other family members.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Helen Preston, sister Rosemarie Preston and brother Joseph Preston.
Services were held Sept. 6 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.

Helen K. Thomas
Former Arrowship Road resident Helen Katherine Thomas, 86, died Aug. 22 [2003] at her home in Chestertown.
A graduate of Centerville High School in Centerville, Pa., the former Helen Hardisky married David I. Thomas in 1941.
With three sons on the swim team, she was an active volunteer and an enthusiastic fund-raiser for Dundalk YMCA.
She and her husband belonged to Sparrows Point Country Club, where they were mixed doubles champions in tennis and she was runner-up to the club champion in golf.
After her husband retired from Bethlehem Steel, they moved to Chestertown in 1982 and spent winters in Clearwater, Fla.
She was a member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club in Chestertown and was its Women's Club golf champion in 1987. She also was the Women's Golf Association's Delmarva area champion.
A talented painter, she studied watercolors at Dundalk Community College and later in Chestertown and Clearwater.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by sons Phillip S. Thomas and Jeffrey W. Thomas, both of Dundalk, sister Lucille Turner of Baltimore and three grandchildren. Another son, David J. Thomas, died in 1994.
Services were held Aug. 24 in Chestertown.

Francis A. Zapf Jr.
Francis A. Zapf Jr., who lived in Millers Island for 27 years, died of cancer Sept. 9 [2003] at University Hospital. He was 66 years old and was a resident of Trappe, Md., for almost seven years.
Mr. Zapf, a 1955 Patterson High School graduate, worked in the printing industry his whole career He retired from Graphtex, a printing company in Laurel Junction, Md.
Boating, fishing, hunting and working in the yard were his favorite pastimes. In addition to his wife of 46 years, Catherine A. (nee Lease), he is survived by children Mary-Ann Astarita, Joseph F. and Michael A. Zapf, mother Mary C. Zapf and four grandchildren. He also leaves behind his Labrador retriever, Charlie.
He was predeceased by daughter Cheryle Ann Zapf and father Francis A. Zapf Sr.
A funeral service was held Sept. 13 at St. Luke's Catholic Church.

Ethel M. Adams
Louth Road resident Ethel M. Adams, 91, died of natural causes at home Sept. 18 [2003].
Born in 1911 in Browntown, Va., the former Ethel Johnson married Thomas H. Adams in 1937. They lived in Baltimore before moving to Louth Road in 1948.
While her children attended St. Rita School, she worked part-time in the school cafeteria. Years ago, she also was a Cub Scout den mother and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
In addition to her husband of 66 years, she is survived by sons Thomas W. Adams of Brewer, Maine; Ronald L. Adams of Dundalk Farms and David F. Adams of Old Dundalk. She was predeceased in 1984 by another son, Richard L. Adams, a Baltimore County Police officer at the Dundalk Precinct.
She also leaves behind sisters Maude Lewis and Lillian Taylor, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many other family members. The Rev. Richard P. Wojciechowski celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on Sept. 22 at St. Rita Church. Interment followed at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.

Curtis G. Castle
Curtis George Castle, a resident of Old Dundalk for 38 years, died at home Sept. 23 [2003], nine days after his 90th birthday.
Born and raised in Washington state, Mr. Castle retired in the mid-1970s after a long career with Kennecott Copper Refining Co, where he was a general foreman.
He belonged to Patapsco Masonic Lodge 183 and was a member of Boumi Temple. He also was a longtime member of the Loch Raven Skeet and Trap Club.
Predeceased in 1976 by his wife, Kathryn F. Castle (nee Staley), he is survived by three daughters, Danna J. Christman, Suzanne G. Castle and Geraldine Rinaldi, sister Danna J. Hutto, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother Donald Castle.
Services were held Sept. 27 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.

William B. Davis
Kelmore Road resident William B. Davis, 64, died at home Sept. 30 [2003] after a long illness.
Mr. Davis, who was born in West Virginia and grew up in Edgemere, was a 1959 graduate of Sparrows Point High School.
He started working at Bethlehem Steel in 1960 and retired in 1991 with 31 years of service. He and his wife moved to West Inverness the year before he retired.
He enjoyed trout fishing, watching football, playing family poker games and going to auctions.
In addition to his wife of 35 years, Linda E. (nee Brooks), he is survived by sons Russell Davis of Dundalk and Glen Davis of Edgemere and daughter Dawn Mills of Dundalk, sisters Mary Shiflett and Carol Fendlay, both of Edgemere, four grandchildren and many other family members. He also leaves behind dear friend Ja-Neel Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, longtime Edgemere residents Harry and Elizabeth Davis.
A memorial service was held Oct. 3 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home.

Edward Heiger Sr.
Edward Heiger Sr., a lifelong resident of Millers Island, died Oct. 5 [2003] at Manor Care Rehabilitation and Nursing Home at age 86.
Mr. Heiger, who was born in Baltimore City, was one of nine siblings and was raised from age 9 by his sister, Anna B. Walker.
His family built three bars - all called Walker's Inn - and two adjoining stores in Millers Island, the last of which, built in 1955 at Millers Island Road and Cuckold Point Road, he lived in until his death. Mr. Heiger also worked as a baker at Bisches Bakery - where he met his wife, Margaret M. (nee Clark) - and retired from a position as a wire turner at Reid Avery in 1984.
Mr. Heiger is survived by one sister, Evelyn Barnett, and his five children: Madeline Alderson and Carol Anderson of Edgemere, Edward Heiger Jr. and Anna Marie Lake of Millers Island and Margaret Owens of Florida. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers, by his wife of 60 years in 2001, by great-granddaughter Danielle Owens in 1993 and by great-grandson Zachary Heiger in 2002.
Viewings were held at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home on Oct. 6 and 7. Services were to be held Oct. 8 at St. Luke's Catholic Church with interment following at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cementery.
