Leona LeGrande

WYNNEWOOD, Pa. - Leona LeGrande, 81, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at Lankenau Hospital.

She was born Jan. 5, 1922, daughter of the late Arthur and Susie Conway of Rhodesdale.

Mrs. LeGrande was educated in the Dorchester County school system. After graduating from High School, she moved to Philadelphia in 1942, where she began working for several families in the area and later was employed with the Federal Government Quartermasters agency until her retirement.

She joined Vine Memorial Baptist church under the pastoral direction of the late Leonard G. Carr in 1948. In 1959 she married William D. LeGrande of Philadelphia, Pa.

Mrs. LeGrande was a very active member of the church. She was a worker in the Christian Sunday School as a teacher. She was a member of the missionary circle 1, participated in the Back-yard Bible Class as well as the Vacation Bible School.

She is survived by: one son, Glenn M. LeGrande of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Gwen M. LeGrande of Philadelphia, Pa.; two grandchildren, Tahyetta Daniels and Christopher Tubbs of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven sisters, Thelma Gaddy, Elizabeth Jackson both of Philadelphia, Pa., Alma Davis and Gloria Stewart of Baltimore, Irene Puryear of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dorothy Farrare of Hurlock, and Carolyn Green of Rhodesdale; five brothers, Vernon Conway of Sterling, Va., Arthur Conway Jr. of Randallstown, Harold Conway of Baltimore, Edward Conway of Hurlock and Ronald Conway of El Paso, Texas. She is also survived by six brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Jackson, James Davis, James Puryear, Ozzie Farrare, Charles Stewart and Jacob Green; four sisters-in-law, Bertie Conway, Margaret Conway, Monya Conway and Betty Conway; one daughter-in-law, Cherie LeGrande and a number of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friend and companion, Rufus Whatley.

William O. Murphy

SALISBURY - William O. Murphy, 55, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Brenda Lou Paul

ELKTON - Brenda Lou Paul, 46, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003.

She was the daughter of the late Olie and Pauline Paul of Church Creek.

Ms. Paul is survived by her family of five brothers; one sister and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Helen B. Lockwood officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Phillip Blades

FISHING CREEK - Phillip Blades, 44, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at his home. He had been ill since last July.

Mr. Blades was married to the former Tina Creighton.

Arrangements incomplete at this time are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Naomi G. Andrews

CAMBRIDGE - Naomi G. Andrews, 95, passed away Wednesday morning, March 7, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Alton R. "Pete" Andrews and had been in failing health for the past year.

Mrs. Andrews was born Aug. 25, 1905 at Aireys, the daughter of the late George B. and Annie Hurley Gilliss.

She was raised in Cambridge and was a graduate of Cambridge High School. She married Mr. Andrews on April 5, 1941. He passed away on Sept. 30, 1982.

As a young woman she worked as a legal secretary for the late William D. Gould. For 34 years, Mrs. Andrews served as Customs Agent for the U.S. government, retiring in 1975.

She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church and some years ago played the piano there. Mrs. Andrews was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and also held membership in the Auxiliaries of Dorchester General Hospital and the Eastern Shore Hospital Center, the D.D. Club of Grace UM Church and the Homemakers.

Mrs. Andrews is survived by three nieces, Charlotte Groff of Seminole, Fla., Betty Sheets and Anna Ruth Godman of Ocean Pines and two nephews, Bill Gilliss and George H. Asplen of Baltimore.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Melsie Asplen, Marguerite Robbins, Mary Hastings and Elizabeth Jones; four brothers, Glenn Gilliss, Raymond Gilliss, George Gilliss and Earl Gilliss and a niece, Regina McClain.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Shirley A. Evans. Burial will take place in the East New Market Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday morning during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Roxanne Snelling, 5426 Chateau Road, East New Market, MD 21631.

Francis S. Hughes

CAMBRIDGE - Francis S. Hughes, 88, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the home of his daughter in Dunkirk. He had been in failing health for several weeks.

He was born Sept. 22, 1912 in Baltimore, the son of the late Claude and Agnes Virginia Baldwin Hughes.

Mr. Hughes had attended schools in Baltimore. During the 1920s and 30s he had ridden as a jockey for the Seagram's Liquor Co. During World War II he had served in the U.S. Army and was a Staff Sergeant in the Military Police.

After the war Mr. Hughes had worked as a truck driver for the Railroad Express Co. for 25 years. He later worked for the Eastman Kodak Co. in the processing lab in Gaithersburg for a number of years until he retired in 1965.

On Feb. 28, 1942 he married the former Dorothy Mae Souder. She passed away on Jan. 22, 1995. They had made their home in Cambridge since 1975.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in College Park and was also a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion.

Mr. Hughes is survived by one son, Kenneth S. Hughes of Cambridge; three daughters, Judith A. Malesky of Millersville, Donna M. Lennon of Dunkirk, Susan K. Means of Rose Haven; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one brother, Charles Hughes of College Park.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Thomas Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery.

The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service on Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Hughes' grandsons.

M/Sgt. Darrell D. Aldridge

CAMBRIDGE - Master Sergeant Darrell Donyel Aldridge, 39, died Friday, March 2, 2001 in Cambridge.

M/Sgt. Aldridge was born April 15, 1961 in Cambridge, the son of Clayton and the late Angeline Aldridge.

He graduated from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in 1979 and then attended Aviation school in Oklahoma City, Okla. and graduated in 1982. M/Sgt. Aldridge then joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving for 19 years.

In addition to his father he is survived by one daughter, Lauren Aldridge of Ft. Washington; two sisters, Tanna Cornish and Shene Chester of Cambridge; four brothers, James D. Chester of Bowie, Terry Aldridge and Gregory Aldridge of Rhodesdale and Byron Chester of Washington, D.C.; one brother-in-law, Montro Cornish of Cambridge; one sister-in-law, Sharon Chester of Bowie; four aunts; one uncle and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. March 13 at Bethel AME Church in Cambridge. Burial will be held at Arlington Memorial Park in Arlington, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. March 12 at the church in Cambridge.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Edwin A. Murphy

VIENNA - Edwin A. Murphy, 89, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Glasgow Nursing Home in Cambridge.

Mr. Murphy was the husband of Margaret Louise Murphy who preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 2000.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Vienna United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received by the family 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the church and during the hour preceding the service on Monday.

The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.

Frances Taylor

CAMBRIDGE - Frances Mack Taylor, 58, passed away Monday, March 5, 2001.

She was born Nov. 18, 1942 in Dorchester, daughter of Alexander and the late Annie Mae Taylor.

Ms. Taylor received her education in the public schools of Dorchester County. She worked at Clayton's Seafood, Cambridge Clothing Facotyr, Philadelphia Airport and a sewing factory in Philadelphia, Pa.

In addition her father, she is survived by one daughter, Cherry Jean Mack-Brisco; three sons, Antonio Taylor of Sanford, Fla., James Taylor and Jermaine Taylor, both of Cambridge; a son-in-law, Randolph Brisco; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Taylor; two sisters, Lula Mae Mack-Wongus and Diane Mack-Farrare, both of Cambridge; two brothers, Clarence Smith of Grasonville and Alonza Mack Jr. of Casselberry, Fla. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Tanzannica Mack of Rockville; two grandsons, Maurice Collier of Rockville and Jaron Taylor of Sanford, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Savon and Jewel Collier, both of Rockville and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her sister, Betty Windsor of Berlin and her brother, Arnold Smith of Trappe.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.

A viewing will be held 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

William O. Porter

CAMBRIDGE - William O. Porter, 76, of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Saturday, March 8, 2003. He was born in Cambridge on November 29, 1926 and was the son of the late Otto C. and Elizabeth Cook Porter.

Mr. Porter had attended schools in Cambridge, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1945. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and had been stationed in Germany.

On Dec. 28, 1949 he married the former Virginia Parker. For some 38 years, he had worked as an insurance salesman and manager for the Monumental Life Insurance Co.

He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, and of the Cambridge Country Club.

He had been an avid sportsman for most of his life, having played baseball in High School. He also had enjoyed hunting and bowling and had been an avid golfer for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia Parker Porter of Cambridge; two daughters and sons in law, Billie Sue Norton and Judge John L. Norton; and JoAnn Harrington and William E. Harrington, all of Cambridge. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Amanda Leigh Norton and Amy Lauren Norton.

A memorial service will be held on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Dale L. Vroman officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Burial will take place at Dorchester Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, it is the request of the family that expressions of sympathy are made in the form of donations to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Bertha R. Condon

CENTREVILLE - Bertha R. Condon, 69, died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home.

She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Condon of Ragged Point; and three children, Donna Kay Condon of Cordova, Linda Condon Matthews of Cornersville and Bill L. Condon of Hudson.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery.

Lillian E. Cook

FEDERALSBURG - Lillian Elizabeth Shultie Cook, 92, of Seippes Road, died Friday, March 9, 2001 at Chesapeake Woods in Cambridge.

She was born March 7, 1909 in Hollandsville, Del., the daughter of the late Philip and Carrie E. Mitchell Shultie. Her husband, Charles L. Cook, preceded her in death on April 2, 1997.

Mrs. Cook was a seamstress and had served as a Civil Defense Plane Spotter during World War II. She was a member of Friendship Community Church.

She is survived by a son, Charles N. Cook of Hurlock; two daughters, Lois C. Faulkner of Bridgeville, Del. and Doris Murphy of Seaford, Del.; eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by a son, Philip Bruce Wilson; two brothers, Elwood and Fred Shultie and one sister, Pearl Baker.

A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. Denzil Cheek officiating. Burial followed in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg.

Friends called at the funeral home during the hour preceding the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Unity-Washington United Methodist Church, Endowment Fund or Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 298, Hurlock, MD 21643.

Harold E. Klein

MILLSBORO, Del. - Harold E. Klein, 80, of Millsboro, Del., died Friday, March 9, 2001 at the home of his son David L. Klein in Millsboro.

Mr. Klein was born in Towner, N.D., the son of the late Charles F. and Mary A. Sharp Klein.

He was a medical technologist who worked at several hospitals, the last being Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge. He retired in 1985, after 39 years.

Mr. Klein was raised in LaFarge, Wis. He was a graduate of LaFarge High School.

He was a life member and was twice commander of American Legion Post 91 in Cambridge. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 7460 in Cambridge, was a member of the Grand National Waterfowl Association and was a past vice commodore of the Cambridge Yacht Club.

An army veteran of World War II, he fought in New Guinea and Luzon. He received the American Theater Service Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon and the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon.

In addition to his son David, he is survived by another son, Ira Stephen Klein of Monroe, Wis.; one daughter, Judith Ann Willey of Cambridge; two brothers, Merlin Klein of Waupon, Wis. and Paul Klein of Cascade, Idaho; three sisters, Nadyne Cowley of Madison, Wis.; Marion Newman of Onalaska, Wis.; and Laurel McHenry of Brooklyn, Wis.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Hurlock, with the Rev. Randall Blackmon and the Rev. Kevin English officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Delaware Hospice, 600 Dupont Highway, Georgetown, DE, 19947. Arrangements are by the Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del.
