The Rev. George E. Reed

CAMBRIDGE - The Rev. George E. Reed, 86, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 13, 2001 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.

He was born April 25, 1915 in Barberton, Ohio, the son of the late George W. and Maude Belle McCloskey Reed.

The Rev. Reed was raised in Akron and graduated from Kenmore High School in 1934. In 1943 he received his A.B. from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio and in 1945 he graduated from the Boston University School of Theology.

He served in the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for 20 years, serving numerous churches and in the Kansas Conference for two years. He later served as Chaplain Intern at Osowatamie State Hospital in Osowatamie, Kan. and in 1965 assumed duties as chaplain of the Eastern Shore Hospital Center in Cambridge, retiring in 1980.

The Rev. Reed was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and a past president of the Dorchester County Ministerial Association. He served on the Board of Directors of the Commission on Aging and as a Regional Director of MAC.

He was also a former member and past president of the Cambridge Rotary Club, a member and past chaplain of Cambridge Lodge 66, A.F. & A.M., and a member of Boumi Temple and the Eastern Shore Shrine Club.

The Rev. Reed had many interests and hobbies including traveling, photography and Indian customs and affairs, particularly the Navajo Indians at Shiprock, N.M.

He is survived by his wife, the former Norma Renneisen, whom he married on Aug. 26, 1944; four sons and their wives, Jeffrey G. and Sylvia Reed of Fond du Lac, Wis., Timothy W. and Beth Reed of Salisbury, G. Philip and Donna Reed of Cambridge and Stephen H. and Doreen Reed of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, Matthew P. Reed, Christopher L. Reed, Daniel B. Reed, Ashley M. Reed and Kelly E. Reed and one sister, Martha V. Thompson of Canton, Ohio.

A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dale L. Vroman. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the church during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to either the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613 or The Alzheimer's Association, 212 W. Main St., Suite 202, Salisbury, MD 21801-9933.

Reed Services

CAMBRIDGE - Funeral services for the Rev. George E. Reed will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Vroman officiating.

The Rev. Reed, who was chaplain at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center until retiring in 1980, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 13, at Chesapeake Woods Center.

Active pallbearers will be Matthew Reed, Tom Phillips, Dale Price, Russell Mills, Harold Carr and Walter Tanner. Honorary bearers will be Alan Eckel, Frank Wright, Donald Holley, Wallace Dodson and Kurt Riehl.

Annie L. Shenton

CAMBRIDGE - Annie Lee King Shenton, 87, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Care Center.

Mrs. Shenton was born in Richmond, Va. She graduated from Northeast High School in Northeast, Md.

She was a waitress for many years in several local restaurants and at the Cambridge Yacht Club and Cambridge Country Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Rothwell of Snow Hill and Suzanne B. Rothwell Allen of Chatham, Mass.; one son, Wesley Rothwell of Church Creek; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Shenton donated her remains to the Anatomy Board of Maryland for medical research. There will be no services.

Naomi I. White

CAMBRIDGE - Naomi I. White, 80, passed away Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge. Mrs. White had been in failing health for several years and had been a resident a Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge since August of 1992. She had been a resident at Mallard Bay since last January.

She was born June 1, 1921 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Herbert Edward and Sophia Lena Johnson Mills.

Mrs. White attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938. Some years ago she had worked as a secretary for the Phillips Hardware Co. in Cambridge, as well as several other businesses.

On Feb. 22, 1958 she was married to Clarke Allen White. They had operated a television sales and service business on Sunburst Highway in Cambridge for a number of years. Mr. White passed away on July 30, 1992.

Mrs. White is survived by a brother, Harry L. "Bing" Mills of Cambridge; two nieces, Donna Laskowski of Alexandria, Va. and Charlene Nelson of Trappe; one nephew, Van E. Mills of Easton; two aunts, M. Magdalene Mills of Cambridge and Doris Marshall of Baltimore; three uncles, Webster Johnson, Frederick Johnson and Allen Johnson, all of Cambridge.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward H. Mills.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Burial will follow at the East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday during the hour preceding the service.

Pallbearers will be Ed Nelson, Rodney Nelson, Van E. Mills, Matthew Mills, Harry L. "Bing" Mills and Mark Laskowski.

Betty V. Wooters

PRESTON - Betty Vera Usilton Wooters, 77, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

She was born Feb. 3, 1924 in Queen Anne County, the daughter of the late Edward and Georgetta Hyser Usilton. Her husband, John Wesley Wooters Jr., preceded her in death on June 4, 1993.

Mrs. Wooters was a graduate of Trappe High School, Class of 1941. She worked as traffic clerk at the former Preston Trucking Co., retiring in 1988 after 28 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital at Easton and of the Harmony United Methodist Church in Harmony.

Mrs. Wooters is survived by two daughters, Sharon Smedley of Seaford, Del. and Bonita Jett of Salisbury; two sons, H. John "Jack" Wooters III of Easton and Lennard Wooters of Cambridge; five grandchildren, Dale Burgess Jr., Wayne Smedley Jr., Brent Jett, Karen Andryski and Scott Wooters; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Wooters of Centreville and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held noon Thursday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. Carolyn Price officiating. Burial will follow in Junior Order Cemetery in Preston.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight and on Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Caroline County Unit, P.O. Box 505, Denton, MD 21629 or to the Caroline Hospice Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.

Una N. Stellges

TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. - Una Naomi Stellges, 81, formerly of Maryland and Saranac Lake, N.Y., died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at the Mercy Health Care Center in Tupper Lake.

She was born in Catalina, Newfoundland on May 4, 1920, the daughter of Alfred and Emma (Clouter) Piercey. She married the Rev. George Stellges on Sept. 17, 1939 in Huntington, Long Island. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1990.

Mrs. Stellges had been a resident of the Saranac Lake area since 1997. Prior to that she had lived in communities throughout Maryland and Delaware with her husband and had assisted him at the various Methodist Churches he served.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Stellges of Saranac Lake, N.Y. and Virginia Cotten of Wolcott, Vt.; one grandson, Joseph Cotten of Hurlock; one granddaughter, Beth Bailey of Knotts Island, N.C.; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery Chapel at Beulah with the Rev. John Irwin officiating.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, N.Y. and with the Fellows-Helfenbein-Newnam Funeral Home in Easton.

Friends wishing to remember her may make memorial contributions to the National Parkinson's Association or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Church St., Saranac Lake, N.Y. 12983.

Theodore Phillips II

CAMBRIDGE - Theodore Phillips II, 63, passed away early Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2001 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. He had resided at the William Hill Gardens for the past three weeks.

He was born June 29, 1938 in Denmark, the son of the late Theodore and Frances Newbaker Phillips. He graduated cum laude from the Choate School in Connecticut in 1957 and from Yale University in 1961. While at Yale he was a member of the Rugby and the rowing teams.

In 1963, he graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology with a master of science degree in chemistry. He earned a doctor of philosophy from the University of Kentucky in 1968 and while working on this degree was an associate professor of chemistry at the university.

In his early years at college, he spent several summers at the University of Mexico where he studied Mexican culture and learned to speak Spanish fluently.

Mr. Phillips was a lifelong aviation enthusiast and earned his individual pilot's license at the Easton Airport. He furthered his flying education at the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and later became a flight instructor there. He later received his commercial pilot's license and flew charter flights with Maryland Airlines out of Easton.

Mr. Phillips was a faithful communicant of Christ Episcopal Church where he had served on the vestry. In February of 2000 he was honored with a Paschal Candle Award for outstanding service.

Mr. Phillips was interested in gliding and was an avid swimmer. He was a member of the Chesapeake Soaring Club in Ridgely and the Easton YMCA. At the YMCA he became a member of the Master Swimmers and competed in senior swimming competitions.

He also held memberships in Ducks Unlimited and the Cambridge Yacht Club. Mr. Phillips enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to have visited Israel, England, Europe, New Zealand, Portugal, Africa and the Antarctic.

He is survived by several cousins, Albanus Phillips III, Harry Wehr and Theodora Shelor, all of Cambridge, Anita Phillips Kreeger of Towson, Marge Keene of Arnold, Alma Vandenberg of Bozman, Edgar M. Skinner III of Daytona Beach, Fla., Andrew P. Skinner of Georgia, Phil Newbaker of Pennsylvania, Linda Newbaker of California, Linda Dillingham of Virginia and Pierre Mion of Colorado.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge by the Rev. Nathaniel E. Pierce. Burial will follow in the adjoining churchyard. Friends will be received at the Thomas Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today.

Pallbearers will be Albanus Phillips III, Mike Todd, Larry Hepner, Jim Thomas, George Keene, Carroll Ruark, Bill Shertenlieb, Sandy Orem, Lincoln Clark, Andy Skinner and Andy Kreeger.

Memorials may be made to either Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613 or Talbot Hospice House, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Stephanie L. Horne

WILLARDS - Stephanie Lynn Horne, 36, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born in Cambridge, the daughter of Ernest Palmer Weber and Margaret Ward Weber.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband of 8 1/2 years, John Levin Horne of Willards; a sister, Laura Lee Short and her husband, Frank of Colorado Springs; mother and father-in-law, Diane C. and James Franklin Horne Sr. of Seaford; brother-in-laws, James Horne Jr. and his wife, Tammy of Seaford and Jeff M. Horne and his wife, Connie of Laurel; several nieces and nephews and her beloved cat "Mickey."

A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon. The Rev. Dr. Ruth Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Willards.

Julia L. Beasley

CAMBRIDGE - Julia Lee Beasley, 82, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born May 20, 1919 in Wrens, Ga., the daughter of the late Sarah Oliphant Avera and Liege Avera.

Mrs. Beasley attended Jefferson County, Ga. public schools and later married Cicero Beasley Sr.

She was employed by the J. M. Clayton Seaford Co. until her retirement in 1977. After her retirement, she resided with her oldest son, who was in the military, and his family. While living with her son, she lived in Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Ft. Detrick, and Patrick Air Force Base in Florida and returned to Cambridge in 1986.

She was a member of the Refuge Temple Church of God in Cambridge.

Mrs. Beasley is survived by five daughters: Sally Beasley, Dorothy Keene, Sarah Wright, Elizabeth Beasley and Martha Beasley, all of Cambridge; two sons, Alvin Beasley of Cambridge and Cicero Beasley Jr. of Easton; one daughter-in-law, Irene Beasley of Easton and two sons-in-law, William Keene of Annapolis and Henry Wright of Cambridge.

She is also survived by three sisters, Sallie Smith of Wrens, Ga., Estelle Smith of Thompson, Ga. and Lillie Filer of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Andy Avera and Lemar Avera, both of Orlando, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Pearl Avera of Orlando, Fla. and two brothers-in-law, Willie Hubbard of Wrens, Ga. and Robert Filer of Orlando, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Beasley was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers, Liege Avera Jr., Willie Avera, Robert Avera and James Avera.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zion Baptist Church, 600 Cross St., Cambridge. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour before the service. The Rev. William A. Hitchens Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery on Bayly Road.

Arnold A. Brooks

WOOLFORD - Arnold Andreas Brooks, 53, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001 at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.

He was born July 14, 1948 in Cambridge, the son of Andreas Arnold "Buster" Brooks and the late Marjorie Vivian Bramble Brooks.

Besides his father, he is survived by three sisters, Vivian Carole Rhoten of Coudersport, Pa., Doris Louise Era of East New Market and Karen Lynn Bell of Seaford, Del. and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. today at Old Trinity Church in Church Creek.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg.

Clevon T. Johnson

CAMBRIDGE - Clevon Tyrone Johnson, 52, passed away on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.

A very special friend, JoAnne Anderson of Cambridge, survives him.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.

The viewing will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge. The family will be present the final hour.

Joseph A. Slovick

CAMBRIDGE - Joseph A. Slovick, 55, passed away at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Baltimore.

He was the husband of the former Patricia Classing.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Lawrence E. Brian

PRESTON - Lawrence Edward "Larry" Brian, 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at his residence.

He was born May 9, 1945 in Salisbury, the son of the late Carlton E. and Mary Frances Dickerson Brian.

He was a poultry farmer and also was a maintenance mechanic for Benmatt Industries in Federalsburg.

Mr. Brian is survived by his wife, Karen Collins Brian of Preston; a daughter, Brittany Nicole Brian of Preston; a son, Dustin Darrell Brian of Coral Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Stephan Brian of Laurel, Del. and Kevin Brian of Georgetown and two sisters, Myra Brian of Shady Side and Julia Price of Laurel, Del. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Todd Crawford and the Rev. Howard Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Old School Baptist Cemetery in Laurel, Del.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and one hour prior to the service.

George W. Davis

DELMAR, Del. - George William Davis, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at his home.

He was born in Wilmington, Del. the son of the late Glen and Irene Davis.

He served in Okinawa during World War II in the 6th Marine Division and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of St. Stephen's UM Church in Delmar and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Davis was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League; charter member of VFW Post 8276 in Delmar; past post commander, past district commander and past state quartermaster. He was a member of the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Davis of Delmar; two sons, Robert Nelson Davis of Baltimore and William George Davis II of Delmar; a stepson, Jeffrey William Phillips of Delmar; a daughter, Barbara Snyder of Delmar; a stepdaughter, Heather Moore of Cambridge; a sister, Jean Wright of Georgia; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one step great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn M. Davis in 1986; a sister, Frances Beach; a brother, Wilson Davis and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Short Funeral Home in Delmar, Del. with the Rev. Doug Albert officiating. Burial will be in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
